Exam Evaluation
1.) I Think that the artists that I selected to research and explore were very inspirational and effective towards my design process. They showed me how to combine objects and elements that have nothing to do with each other and somehow make them seem to link or tell a story. O’Neill’s work leads me down the collage route. I didn’t completely think that a collage could be part of a piece of advertisement because I rarely see it being used this way but I learnt that this technique can become a good ad or poster from looking at his previous work for high-end companies. A piece of work he did, had a woman with half her head missing but in place, were collaged swirls and shapes. This is where I got the inspiration for my second green poster.
I believe that the work O’Neill has a chaotic structure to them and I’ve managed to do the same but make it mine. Shakeel’s work gave me inspiration in the way she injects humour and new meaning to old images. I look at her work and think of so many different meanings behind them and I wanted people to look at my work and try to come up with their own ideas of what this person with pixel tears and dinosaurs could be dreaming of. Her work also is a combination of random elements, they remind me of a dream because these things shouldn’t be together. She inspired my dream vivid idea. Coupland is a very thought provoking and opinionated man and I appreciated the way that all his work had a strong opinion and viewpoint behind them. His deep face collection takes away the individual’s face and expression, making it so that you completely focus on the shapes and colours. I Have covered up certain features of my subject’s faces to draw away focus and show that this dream is more about what’s being imagined, rather than their facial expressions. Liam Madden’s posters really helped me to turn my collages into posters. His bright and glowy backgrounds were very helpful in my design process because I didn’t know what background I wanted to design until I saw his work.
2.) I’m happy with my final outcomes and quite proud of myself because I put a lot of work into them and believe that I produced some high-quality posters. Nearly everything in the exam went to plan and I left confident in myself. My posters were my favourite outcomes because they looked colourful and bold. I had planned in my head what I wanted the posters to look like, so making them was a fast process. My only fault with my posters was text placement I think that placing the exhibition information at the top in a small font can make it a bit hard for some of the audience to read. I had planned to design two posters, one or two banners, and a GIF. When I started to design the banners, I hadn’t had a particular idea in mind but knew that I wanted to use the collages and background colour schemes again, so that they tied in with the poster designs. The first banner turned out great with the text and image placement. I decided to use the unmirrored Lilli collage on the banner, as It was a more tamed version that would overpower the banner.
The second banner wasn’t as strong. The top of the Isobel collage, didn’t look right so I decided to use the bottom of it. I think that is wasn’t as successful because it had too much text from both the collage and the banner question. Also, the title wasn’t focal enough compared to the first banner I think maybe it would look better if the title was taken away. However, It Would still work as a functioning banner but then put side to side with the other, it isn’t as strong of a design.
My GIF had a clear idea behind it of a glowing background that changes colour. Everything went smoothly with the making of this GIF, but when I uploaded it to Tumblr, it came out quite pixilated I think this is because the image was too big so Tumblr condensed it down. The free downloaded mock-ups were such a big part of making the designs look professional and they really showcased pieces showing their purpose. I believe that my work had a consistent quality throughout the exam and all of the pieces were connected through colour and theme.
3.) My client Was the Wellcome Collection. I did research on their history and what they stood for/ what kind of museum they were. While doing this research, I came to be intrigued by this museum so I decided to take a trip down to Euston road in London and visit the museum. By doing this, I got a better understanding of my client and found that the museum was quite quirky and the exhibits were unlike those that I’ve visited before. The atmosphere there was creative and youthful. I also researched their previous poster advertisements to give me a better understanding of what designs the museum favored. I saw that they renovated their reputation with a poster collection “Bigger, braver and, bolder.” These words stayed with me throughout my design process, as I knew I wanted my designs to be just that. The Wellcome collection combines art and science and my posters are a creative representation of our brain’s imaginative functions. The reaction I want from viewers is for them to look at my pieces, and make up their own little stories of what the collage subject could possibly be dreaming of. I want them to think about their dreams and wonder what they mean. This thought process would then make them curious and wonder “Actually what do my dream mean?” The final outcome is a visit to the Wellcome Collection’s website for more information on the exhibition followed with a trip down to Euston road.
4.) I am aiming these designs towards 18-25-year-olds/ eighteen to the late twenties who are creative and curious. I have done this by making my designs colourful and youthful with a quirky and fun collage design. I kept the poster designs creative without cluttering the page with shapes and patterns. I also used one of my favourites sans serif fonts from Dafont by Chase Babb called Couture, It has been proven that sans serif fonts are more modern and easier to read.
Also from my research on advertisement display, I found out that younger people are more responsive to an underground advertisement which is why I put the posters on an underground mock-up.
5.) Given extra time, I would design more collages for the collections exhibitions and make them into a book of designs that the Wellcome Collection could sell. I did delve Into the merchandise area in my exam but very briefly due to having some extra time towards the end. But, I'd like to explore the possible route of turning the collage designs into more merchandise like most museums do with special exhibitions. I would also figure out how to make my GIF a better quality upload and put it towards a mock-up like the banners and posters.
