To me the most fun part about fix-its is placing dominoes.

Tragedies often consist of escalating series of actions and circumstances which, in isolation, were not clearly leading to the tragic end but form a chain of cause-and-effect directly towards it in hindsight. In equal but opposite fashion, I love starting with small inoccuous changes to canon that in themselves do not obviously fix everything but start a new chain that leads to a better ending.

It's kind of impossible for fix-its to feel fully natural– the reader by definition knows what the original ending was and that this ending will be happier because the writer wants it to be– but it is possible for them to not feel contrived. A big deus-ex-machina, or a character breaking with their pre-established tragic flaws to suddenly make all the "correct" decisions almost always feels unsatisfying to me.

But a few carefully placed small domino pieces slowly knocking over bigger and bigger tiles until the entire story has radically changed? That's a lot more fun.

It recquires the author to both correctly identify the original chain of cause-and-effect and understand the characters well enough to know how they'd react to different circumstances. Because if the story feels like it's fixing the wrong problem or the characters don't act like themselves the magic is lost. But when it works? When it clicks and the reader sees the domino chain laid out in front of them? It's beautiful.

No but if Jason did his whole red hood thing after Damian came to the manor and the two bonded in the league no way would Damian let anyone know about their relationship. It gives him sooo much power over Jason and he’s possessive, that’s his brother no way is he letting anyone steal him.

On patrol he acts normal towards red hood adding critiques when possible (you can’t not bully your sibling) but it’s done professionally to not raise suspicion. After school though he hangs out at his “friends” house. no he doesn’t need Alfred to give him a ride does, Bruce not trust him to hangout with one of the few friends he has? It works perfectly because the Batfam are just happy that Damian was able to make a friend in school and Damian gets to hang out with his brother. (He did make Jason take in a pigeon he found on patrol and it’s 70% of the reason why he visits).

Why did Macaques hair look so much cuter before he started copying Wukong how dare you take that from us?

I’m guessing you might have missed the lore post about Macaque, but I go over a bit on the reasons why Mac started copying Wukong and the major one is how before he arrived at FFM he was basically running away from the previous group he was with, and after he arrived in the island and promptly lost to Wukong he cut his ties metaphorically AND literally, making it seem like the Monkey King had killed him.

Since he was now “dead” he stayed in the island for a long time without leaving until one day Wukong convinced him to go on a trip with him, which led to him taking precautions and making sure he looked different enough for no one to recognize him, and one of those was copying Wukong’s hairstyle since it was the easiest to do and keep up with, after a bit he just started using it around people more, especially strangers

Worry not anon, he does keep his hair down in private way more often than not, which technically I have so much art of him doing this lmaoo I just haven’t posted it lol

(Also I didn’t think anyone had a preference to his hair being down, which I actually prefer cause you’re right he’s so cute)

You know I've been drawing Loop as their Siffrin form so much that it's got me thinking. I've read and seen so many fics and artworks of Loop eventually getting back to looking like their old self, but I don't think I've seen any so far of Loop already being a mirror copy of Siffrin. So uh, yoink?

ISAT AU where the game plays out the same way (plot-wise at least) but Loop looks like Siffrin the whole time and while Siffrin is extremely perplexed that there's another him, he's still gotta accept their help because how else are they supposed to escape the loops? Good ol' Loop is here to help, helpful friendly Loop!
