Amanda is dying of old age, Spock calls Dr. McCoy after Vulcan healers tell him it's terminal and McCoy is able to stop some strokes she's having but gives them the hard but logical advice that it'd be better to stop treatment and Spock realizes the almost childlike faith he has in McCoy
