‘WAVE’ Lyric Analysis

Released with the One to All album, June 2019.

The song suits the MV well - a summer-y song about being together, having fun, and chilling, with a few specks of hidden doubts and the usual HALATEEZ ‘fever’ imagery. 

It is after ‘Crescent’ and before ‘Twilight’ in my storyline playlist. I have explained in depth why ‘Crescent’ is before ‘WAVE’ in my analysis post of that track - the track is waking up on the beach, and ‘WAVE’ is about being on the beach, already in the dream. ‘Twilight’ its well after ‘WAVE’ as it has similar dream-like aspects, and both have heavy celestial and togetherness themes. 

In the song, there is a conflict in lyrics between wating to relax and play, and wanting to stride forwards and continue the journey. This is, of course, the often -mentioned conflict between dreams and reality in this album.

Did Yeosang get any lines? Not really :/

Full lyric analysis below the line.

WAVE

This verse is also translated as, ‘We are at ocean blue now, somewhere on the wave. Still staying together, I don’t know where to go.’

Hongjoong’s last line is also, ‘throw away any hesitation,’ which has similar meaning but has a more carefree attitude - ‘throw away’  suggests that they will never hesitate again, and so will keep powering forward in whatever they want to do.

Seonghwa’s line is also, ‘We’ve already gone over lots of things,’ and Jongho’s line is also, ‘time is mutable.’ Where, of course, ‘mutable’ is defined as ‘liable or likely to change.’ Just a more poetic way to say the same thing, but also creates a greater sense of the impactand weight of time changing.

This verse is also translated as, ‘over the ocean, on the way to the hot sun, when you want to stop, shout after sweeping your hair up.’

Mingi’s second line here is also, ‘more more surging more,’ and Seonghwa’s line is also, ‘go over the tough wave.’ This just emphasises the idea that the sea is mutable (haha), and that it will rise up to swallow the boys if they aren’t careful - they are safe on the island and on the beach (which, of course, is half of the problem anyway).

Ahh yes, the classic Hongjoong verse.

The first line is also, ‘we are finding unknown island, follow me,’ which is more definitive than the original - we know that we will find it, and are on the cusp of doing so. This also suggests that thy are very close to the end of their journey, which fits with ‘WAVE’’s position at the literal beginning of the end of the Treasureteez story arc.

The last three lines are also, ‘even more moving in groups, even more over tough waves, carry on now.’

I don’t know why he felt the need to reference America of all places, but, as far as American rivers go, the Mississippi is a good one to reference as a borderline or important location/body of water.

The first two lines are also, ‘Journey to ocean, throw away all. Drink.’

‘Are you ready to find?’ is also, ‘are you ready to find out?’, which suggests more of a specific answer to a question, than a vague ‘thing’ that they are going to find.

This last Jongho/Mingi verse is also, ‘Wherever you are, I will be there. Hold my hands, hold my hands. We both are enough.’ This is nice - it reminds me of ‘Twilight’ and ‘Stay’ - being together, holding hands and following each other no matter what, supporting each other and having faith in ourselves and others. It’s a nice little moment of togetherness, joy, and confidence in a generally metafictively uncertain song.

Hongjoong’s part here is, ‘It’s okay if it’s more tough, we’re gonna play on it,’ which is of course more confidence and playfulness with the beach/sea.

‘We’re hotter than anyone under the sun,’ is also, ‘we’re hotter than others under the sun.’

Conclusions

A brilliant summer song with some wonderful metafictive elements and some interesting duality. The choreography goes wonderfully with the lyrics, the ‘Overture: WAVE’ version of the song (both the 7-member and OT8 versions) is very interesting and expands on the story, and the iconic contrast of ‘Hakuna Matata’ (carefree and relaxed) and ‘Go away’ (commanding and potentially fearful) is... interesting and entertaining to say the least.

Okay so I kinda wanna keep this short, one because my mind is all over the place and two I’ll ramble otherwise so I’ll try and keep it concise. Tbh I’ll probably ramble lol 😂 it’ll be a mix of fangirling and my deep thoughts:

So during voting I liked THANXX’s poem more but as soon as I heard Inception I was on that. Like with Illusion/Wave it was hard because it’s Ateez lol but last time I was very pro wave because of it being such a great for a summer realease. And I thought THANXX would be a better summer song and it seemed many Koreans liked it too and I know they want to get a stronger fandom in Korea so I wanted to support that too. I know many people also just voted for inception cause of the issues, I voted for both each time for different reasons but I loved inception more regardless of surrounding things. Anyway so onto the MV.

Not knowing Korean I didn’t know the song was about dreaming and in this instance lucid dreaming, all I knew was the gorgeous beat and vocals, “I’m in love-eeeove-eeeove~” hehe. But reading the lyrics it clicked with inception and lucid dreaming and dreaming in general.

The Song & MV.

This song is so romantic and passionate. It’s beyond time and space and it’s longing for that love that’s always there almost haunting but beautiful. Like beyond dreaming, beyond reality, beyond lucid dreaming, I’m in love.

The way the mv combined some of the dreams or nightmares, of them trying to wake up. But when they wake up are they awake? I’m in love, I’m dream in a dream every night but...if I don’t wake up is it every night or every day? 

Is dreaming my life? My life is in love.

Like wow. Just my heart beats fast.

The visuals. THE VISUALS.

All the boys stirring in their beds, (super hot btw lol) struggling and fighting in their sleep to wake up, they want their dreams to real but are seemingly stuck enjoying the dream one minute and wanting to escape the next knowing it’s not real...or is it real?

Dreams and reality are so close together, they need each other.

Hongjoong running fiercely into himself to awaken, that was so violent and heart pounding. Like he has to run into himself to hopefully awaken. To what reality though or is it through to another dream? How long does is take for us to reach ourselves? Our true selves? But then again we are always changing, just like dreams, yet they are at their core the same.

The burning fire ceiling mimicking Jongho’s dream with the water splashing under their feet was such a gorgeous contrast. They make their own waves, they set the roof on fire 🔥 haha but seriously the elemental work was more flavour for the time and space and dreams and reality dance. 

The opposites that need each other.

Back to the dream/nightmare it’s almost like the love is respite and hope from the nightmares and from the fears. It’s what guides them even though it’s so strong too, as strong as the fear but just that bit stronger to keep them from loosing to those fears. From loosing to the fever dream! 

(Ooooh 🚨🤯🚨 lol but like!!!)

Their fever dream is intense and powerful but they fight it, drifting between reality and dreams and then lucid dreams they will eventually open their eyes. Their treasure is real life, their hopes and dreams. Because this life feels like a dream. This dreamlike reality...it’s too good to be true but it’s very true and real.

All their beds was in their dreams too, which seemed to be the exact same bed and same room but slightly different for each member. 

I think this means that they all share the same dream, they just manifest in different ways. 8 makes 1 dream!

Every member shone in this like wow.

I loved how Yeosang got some good lines too and his dance move moment! 

Ahh!! Wooyoung’s sexy lead of the hip dance, his gaze looking down and almost in a trance. And towards the end, they are all exhausted from the dance their legs slowly give way as they lower to the ground. Ugh that was so so so gorgeous. 

San showing his powerful dancing again falls to the floor in emotion, my heart beat so fast!

Ofc I have to mention Seonghwa’s abs I mean he knew what he was doing, KQ knew it too. Every Atiny screamed in unison at seeing the blessing lol. But his charisma and charm throughout this was so strong, I felt his energy pulsing through the screen~

Back at the very start how Yunho comes up almost like a vampire coming out of a coffin from slumber I loved that move. He’s such a great dancer it was so smooth and wonderful to look at. 

I loved Jongho’s fierceness on this like he is going to fight for this dream, he will face it head on all his expressions were strong and his eyes so focused with purpose!

Mingi falling almost like a dance in the long hallway; even though he stumbles he keeps on the path.

And I mentioned Hongjoong’s amazing powerful leap into himself earlier~ Then at the end we see him perhaps in another reality, another dream? The fever continues...it’s part 1 after all!

aikatsu friends episode 52 spoilers (but it’s hardly a spoiler that i also go on about Hibiki the whole time)

starting off the ep with a dream premonition from Mio. is this really aikatsu...?

waking up with a mysterious jewel in her hand is a little bit Shugo Chara but also a little bit horror considering it’s possibly the same one she stepped on at the end of the last ep?? how’d it get in her bed, in her whateverth-story apt.... scary......

yeah, I really like the Honey Cat part of the op and the rest is just ok. ah well

in the final still of all the characters at the end of the op, Mirai and Hibiki are the only ones to move and are in the very center, so it looks like they’re the main characters in that shot. and that’s the anime I want to see

Mio’s been carrying around that rock all day? she even moved it from presumably her uniform pocket to her jersey pocket?? why?? meanwhile Aine suggests it’s a cursed stone that will follow Mio forever. now that’s exactly what I’m saying

omg Hibiki fell in love with Alicia at first sight... /// I really like Alicia’s old hairstyle here though, it doesn’t have that weird fishtail look her current bob-mullet does (also Bob Mullet is definitely a car salesman somewhere)

so we def haven’t been told what country Alicia is from, because Hibiki just said she was the princess of Sorbet Kingdom. I forget a lot of stuff but I def would’ve remembered that

some floating that’s apparently so intense Mio forgot she had a live later on... so intense that the weird rock she’s carrying around underwent a heat/pressure transformation in her human flesh hand to become a sapphire....... it was kind of a nice and mysterious scene but look. it was also pretty ridiculous. I guess that too is aikatsu

a note to self for whenever I decide to further develop my aikatsu cult religion: the pink light that appears when they set their cards on the card podium thing shoots upward from the ancient ruined amphitheater below the surface of the water. the true power of aikatsu slumbers in the deep. the podium is the channel to commune with it

this is weird to point out I guess, but is this the first time we’ve heard fans shouting in the bg? I don’t remember ever hearing it in aikatsu before which is, again, weird, but bc I super remember it in pripara (because they often shouted extremely funny things) it makes me wonder?? or maybe I’m just an idiot

love this song. I’ve had it on repeat for the majority of the time since the mv came out, lmao.... I like the game visuals a little better but that is perhaps because I put Milk in the absolute perfect Futuring Girl coord for it. the anime version is fine though

whoa, Mio’s transformation into her JLR is all digital and pixels!! I love that it’s different from Hibiki’s and that it’s not just a bunch of sparkles!! how ultra cool!!!

according to Hibiki, the jewels (lit.”gems in the rough”) are drawn to idols that shine, and react to the idol’s brilliance to bring forth a JLR. this is extremely magical for aikatsu, a thing that is supposedly digital (I say despite the crazy talk I dropped above)
