dogwhistles are innocuous because they're used in other contexts or are unassuming enough, people using neonazi memes all the fucking time for some unknown reason makes it MORE deniable when used in a nazi contex because "it's just a meme, everyone uses it"

great to see "we should be allowed to use symbols bigots use without having to think about how it makes us look" Tumblr doesn't understand that.

like seriously you NEED to understand if you're going to use a symbol associated with bigotry you need to be explicit that you are not a bigot, your cool edgy labrys isn't going to make trans people feel safe BECAUSE of it's use as a symbol by transphobic lesbians, and insisting you don't use it in a bigoted way without taking any effort to A) distance yourself from the bigoted use of it or B) maybe think for a second why you care more about using a symbol than you do about the people who associate those symbols with hatred.

you can't act like everyone is just overreacting when you're walking down the street dog whistling, thinking it only counts as a dog whistle if only bigots are doing it and so by also doing it, it's not a dogwhistle anymore.
