I feel like I'm missing some unspoken social rule where everyone pretends the editor of Vogue, who chose the theme, was only being a bit cheeky and Totally Didn't Expect there to be protests outside the Gala, nor did it have anything to do with the Vogue staff's planned disruption that the editor definitely knew about.

Like, those protests were extremely predictable. But I think there's a persistent idea that people involved in "high-class" affairs are fundamentally different people than the Good Poor People (us). That's the only scenario I can think of where it makes sense that someone could choose this as the theme and then write about the short story and then also not expect to be touched by protests. Come on.
