Mashal has no hair because he's a robot, but he likes to braid Astra's hair (poorly, but he's trying) when he can work up the courage. Pinchy metal joints and ultra thick 3a hair don't mix the best, so he usually wears some gloves when he does. Astra tolerates this for the free scalp massage, even if she doesn't like keeping her hair braided.

Astra does indeed have a pet - a fat, calico cat named Mercher's Day whose main hobbies are laying in the sun and catching crickets. He's not a very mischievous cat, but he also lives in a less-than-tidy magical laboratory, so things get spilled and permanent runic ink gets tracked over sensitive projects on occasion. In Astra's eyes, Mercher can do no wrong. He is her sweet baby boy and the light of her life. Even a spilled flask of alchemical fire would only result in a mild scolding. Mashal would be more stern with the cat if that ever happened, but even he couldn't resist those big yellow eyes and chunky little face for long.

As for sweets, I baked Lord Eshteross's maple ginger cookies from the Exquisite Exandria cookbook today, and they turned amazing, even with gluten-free flour :)

Playing Analysis 02 Analysis of all songs from the latest album "The 2nd Law"! A look at the diverse approaches of the band! In this issue of Playing Analysis 02, we will analyze in detail all the songs from the latest album "The 2nd Law" except for "Prelude," which is a drumless song. Please pay attention not only to the phrases and grooves, but also to the drum sounds that color the songs. Score & Text : Michiaki Suganuma

Supremacy “Watch out for the melody-conscious hi-hat!” Reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir," this song has a beat with a symphonic sound. Ex-1 is a simple 4-minute pattern in the beginning, and the hi-hat is played in a 3-beat phrase-like manner to match the melody of the strings. It can be said that this play shows a strong awareness of matching the melody. In the part that leads to the melody, the player briefly develops to match the chime.

Madness “Well-constructed and tasteful rhythm arrangement” The rhythm arrangement with many dubbed-out toms and cymbals shows a good sense of rhythm. The basic pattern consists only of bass drum and snare, and nothing else seems to be carved. Ex-2A is the section where the tom fills and cymbals are covered. The cymbal and pattern interplay is exquisite. Ex-2B is the subsequent fill, which has the same motif as the first fill.

Panic Station “An approach that evokes tension and release.” This song uses an impressive rhythm as a riff. The drums are played simply to match it. Ex-3A is the part that leads to the second A melody, and switches from a pattern with no hi-hat to one with 16 minutes of hi-hat. This approach creates a bit of tension and catharsis (release). The transition to the chorus in 3B is also cathartic, as it switches to a four-minute pattern.

Survival “Dynamic play that develops dramatically.” A single pattern motif is used throughout the piece (Ex-4A), and how this is developed is the key to hearing the play. 4B is the part where the pattern suddenly becomes extreme from the 32-minute fill. The effect of this fill is so great that the pattern is used every time after that. 4 is a section where the pattern frequently switches between multiple crashes and hi-hat patterns, and the fills take a similar approach. The dramatic development of the tune is very exciting!

Follow Me “Fine footwork that makes one imagine a two-bass.” The arrangement of this song reminds me of the theme of the movie "The Never Ending Story," and it is clear that the song is also in the tradition of UK New Wave. Ex-5 is played at the end of the chorus when the song switches to half-time. This time change is also precise, but there are glimpses of what appears to be two-bass throughout the song. From the end of the third bar, there is a triplet, which could also be a two-bass.

Animals “Polyrhythmic approach to change the atmosphere” The song is in five time signatures and has a different drumming feel. Ex-6A and B are the basic patterns in the theme section. The pattern is consistent from beginning to end, changing only the ticks. Ex-6 is the approach in the bridge section. The basic pattern remains the same, but the polyrhythmic approach of accented Chinese cymbals every two beats changes the atmosphere drastically. In the part that follows, he also develops an approach of striking a four-beat pattern in a five-beat section.

Explorers “Various hi-hat work that enhances the song” The casual hi-hat work that enhances the song is impressive. Ex-7A follows this pattern, with the hi-hat being played more strongly in some parts. The hi-hat on the second beat is considered to be struck with both hands. A ghost note is intertwined after the backbeat to make the connection smoother. 7B is the pattern in the chorus, which has a simpler and more subdued groove, but keeps the hi-hat accent at the end of the fourth beat.

Big Freeze “Spatial technique utilizing dubbing treatment" Ex-8A starts with a simple 8-beat part and moves to the chorus, where the bass drum and floor toms are simultaneously pounded to create a heavier sound. The hi-hat is kept at 8 minutes with the left foot. 8B is the following part, where only the rim shot is left, and the hi-hat and fills are dubbed over. This is a technique to make it spatial at once. 8 is the fill where the theme returns again, and it is played in a quick crescendo with both hands, an elaborate technique.

Save Me “Mysterious rhythms like trompe l'oeil” This piece has an expansive folkloric sound world. Ex-9A is the part where the drums switch from a three-beat rhythm to a spatial pattern using toms, and from the fifth bar, the approach develops into a slow shuffle. The rhythm work is like a trompe l'oeil. The pattern changes to a 9B pattern, but if you look at this eighth note as a triplet, you will see that it is a shuffle.

Liquid State “Crescendoing fills that encourage development.” The songs have a straight metal approach, and listening to them in order gives a sense of the band's range. Ex-10A is the pattern at the beginning of the song, an 8-beat with floor toms. The key point is the 16th beat with the toms. Ex-10B is the half-time section, where the crescendo of snare fills are again used effectively. This is one of the most melancholic metal sounds in the album.

The 2nd Law: Unsustainable “Strange phrasing matched to the scene.” This song is an amalgamation of electronic and magical sound worlds. Ex-11A switches from an electro voice part to a shuffle beat, and the bass drum in the first half is synchronized with the voice. The shuffle pattern has a reggae-like groove, which is also well matched. In 11®, the female narrator is backed by Dom's phrasing, which is another exquisite collaboration.

The 2nd Law: Isolation System “Sensual drumming that creates an uplifting feeling.” The song is structured in such a way that the melodic refrain becomes progressively bloated, and the bass drum approach keeps the song at 4 minutes, gradually building up in the second half of the song. Ex-12 is the final climax section. The drums gradually get louder and louder, and a pattern involving the toms creates a sense of excitement. The drums then break off at the final fill. This is the ultimate in sensual drumming.

Review: A drummer with intelligence and taste who embodies the alternative Muse has risen to become one of the UK's leading alternative rock bands. Dominic Howard, the trio's drummer, is an intelligent drummer with a knack for making songs with a variety of musical tendencies appealing. The term "alternative rock" can be interpreted as a general term for new rock that is not bound by, or does not adhere to, established genres or musical concepts, and in this sense, his playing is a perfect example of alternative rock. I heard that they originally played funk as well. While many rock bands have concentrated on mix-meets-rock using their techniques, they (Muse) have continued to expand their musicality by introducing gothic/glam rock, new wave with synths, electronics, and even orchestras. The band's success is due to Dominic's high sense of composition and technique, as well as his ability to play with the best of both worlds. There is no doubt that his presence is directly related to the band's success.
