In the Thar Desert of northwestern India in Rajasthan researchers found “a large number” of spiders they didn’t recognize. They named it Oecobius thar, or the Thar Desert wall spider.
The female Oecobius were also seen using a “dynamic strategy” to hunt ants and flies. They quickly tie up their prey to immobilize it before killing it.

But planting and sustaining millions of trees in water scare locations is a huge and complicated undertaking. To regenerate plant life at scale, what can India do differently?

(Art: 'Traveler, Thar desert', painting by Adnan Yunus)
* * * *
There is an old Eastern fable about a traveler who is taken unawares on the steppes by a ferocious wild animal. In order to escape the beast the traveler hides in an empty well, but at the bottom of the well he sees a dragon with its jaws open, ready to devour him. The poor fellow does not dare to climb out because he is afraid of being eaten by the rapacious beast, neither does he dare drop to the bottom of the well for fear of being eaten by the dragon.
So he seizes hold of a branch of a bush that is growing in the crevices of the well and clings on to it. His arms grow weak and he knows that he will soon have to resign himself to the death that awaits him on either side. Yet he still clings on, and while he is holding on to the branch he looks around and sees that two mice, one black and one white, are steadily working their way round the bush he is hanging from, gnawing away at it. Sooner or later they will eat through it and the branch will snap, and he will fall into the jaws of the dragon. The traveler sees this and knows that he will inevitably perish. But while he is still hanging there he sees some drops of honey on the leaves of the bush, stretches out his tongue and licks them.
In the same way I am clinging to the tree of life, knowing full well that the dragon of death inevitably awaits me, ready to tear me to pieces, and I cannot understand how I have fallen into this torment. And I try licking the honey that once consoled me, but it no longer gives me pleasure. The white mouse and the black mouse – day and night – are gnawing at the branch from which I am hanging. I can see the dragon clearly and the honey no longer tastes sweet. I can see only one thing; the inescapable dragon and the mice, and I cannot tear my eyes away from them. And this is no fable but the truth, the truth that is irrefutable and intelligible to everyone.
The delusion of the joys of life that had formerly stifled my fear of the dragon no longer deceived me. No matter how many times I am told: you cannot understand the meaning of life, do not thinking about it but live, I cannot do so because I have already done it for too long. Now I cannot help seeing day and night chasing me and leading me to my death. This is all I can see because it is the only truth. All the rest is a lie.
Those two drops of honey, which more than all else had diverted my eyes from the cruel truth, my love for my family and for my writing, which I called art – I no longer found sweet.
~Leo Tolstoy (Book: A Confession and Other Religious Writings)

LIMINAL TIME SPACE
There are times when she felt lost to time
As if time was jut a suggestion,as if her life was a choose your own era adventure game
Sometimes lost in the sand dunes away from all suggestions of what time could do, she would wonder if she even existed in the same plane as everyone else. Sometimes she feel that she could cut through everything, like she was walking on soft ground made of layer over layer of time and she felt as if she could cut through it all and exist everywhen and everywhere.
Sometimes time presented to her as if in a sine wave, goes up and goes down and goes up and goes down. Time that is circular and it still moves forward.
So an endless sinewave compressing and compressing in frequency so as one wave comes in touching distance of the other. Never actually touching, but coming so close that it might as well be one with the previous wave. But the funny thing about this wave was that no matter how close the waves crested from each other there was always space between. Space where the intrepid traveller could fall off and get lost. A place where there was no time and no space and just terrible longing for what was not there.
The fabric of time is thin and translucent. She could reach through and land on the next level and then on the next.
One moment she is a scientist lost on the deserts of the Thar and the other moment she is a fishwewoman guided by the stars off the coast of southern India and the next she is a herbalist gathering rare herbs from the foothills of himalayas. All across different timespaces. All her.
She saw glimmers of herself staring back, her childhood of confused anger and her future fraught with struggle and occasional triumphs. She could feel it all within her grasp, or maybe she was in its grasp. And then a third more terrifying choice presented itself to her - Maybe she was IT - time itself. if she wanted she could travel through the liminal spaces and liminal times. Time was like a book, the pages compressed and the stoies separated by eons and continents were only separated by a thin parchment, a thin viel a wall which could be wished away. she could cut through it all and go mad in the process.
There was only so much her mind could process. She needed more so much more to process what she couldn't sense properly. Her mind threatened to break when she tumbled through it all.

Discover Rajasthan’s Cultural & Natural Heritage
Rajasthan, with its golden sands, rich history, and vibrant traditions, has long been a captivating destination for travelers. While its palaces and forts are well-known, the true essence of Rajasthan lies in its rural heartland, where nature, wildlife, and tribal culture flourish. The Bishnoi Village Safari, Desert Safari in Jodhpur, and Camel Safari Jodhpur offer unique, immersive experiences that allow you to explore the beauty and culture of Rajasthan up close. From exploring the eco-conscious Bishnoi community to venturing into the vast Thar Desert, these safaris provide an unforgettable journey into the heart of Rajasthan.
Bishnoi Village Safari: Explore Rajasthan's Green Heart
The Bishnoi Village Safari is a window into the fascinating world of the Bishnoi community, who are known for their deep respect for nature and wildlife conservation. Founded by the Rajas and Maharajas of Jodhpur, this safari offers an authentic glimpse into the rural life of the Marwar region. Located in the serene outskirts of Jodhpur, the Bishnoi village is a haven of greenery amidst the stark desert landscape, thanks to the Bishnoi people’s commitment to preserving their environment.
At the core of the Bishnoi way of life is their devotion to nature, especially wildlife. They follow the 29 principles of their founder, Guru Jambheshwar, which focus on protecting plants and animals. The Bishnois are known for their historical sacrifice in protecting trees, with the most famous story being that of Amrita Devi, who, along with her fellow villagers, sacrificed their lives to save the Khejri trees from being felled. This deep reverence for nature is palpable as you explore the village, interact with its inhabitants, and witness their efforts to coexist with wildlife.
One of the most picturesque spots on the Bishnoi Village Safari is the Guda Bishnoi Lake. This tranquil oasis, surrounded by lush Khejri trees, serves as a water source for the local wildlife, including blackbucks, chinkaras (Indian gazelles), and a variety of migratory birds such as domicile cranes. The lake is a prime spot for birdwatching and observing wildlife in their natural habitat. As you wander along the shores of the lake, you’ll encounter animals and birds in a setting that feels almost untouched by time.
Cultural Immersion and Handicrafts
The Bishnoi Village Safari also offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about Rajasthan's rich tradition of handicrafts. The Bishnoi community is known for its skilled artisans who create beautiful pottery, handwoven textiles, and block-printed fabrics. During the safari, you’ll visit workshops where these traditional crafts are produced, and you can even try your hand at pottery or weaving.
The experience goes beyond just sightseeing — it's a chance to interact with the local community and gain insights into their way of life. You can observe the simple yet sustainable practices that have been passed down through generations and appreciate the artistry that goes into every handcrafted item. Purchasing these goods directly from the artisans not only provides you with a unique souvenir but also supports the local economy and encourages the preservation of traditional crafts.
Desert Safari in Jodhpur: A Thrilling Adventure in the Thar
For those seeking adventure, the Desert Safari in Jodhpur is an exhilarating way to explore the Thar Desert, one of the most iconic landscapes in India. The desert safari begins with a thrilling ride in a jeep, taking you deep into the undulating sand dunes. The landscape of the Thar Desert is both awe-inspiring and humbling, with its vast stretches of golden sand, dotted with sparse vegetation and rugged terrain. The experience of speeding over the dunes, feeling the wind in your hair, and watching the sun cast long shadows over the sand is both thrilling and serene.
The jeep safari also includes stops at desert settlements, where you can learn about the nomadic communities that have lived in this harsh environment for centuries. These communities have adapted to the desert’s extreme conditions with ingenuity, using traditional knowledge to sustain their way of life. As you visit these villages, you’ll have the chance to observe their daily routines, sample local food, and witness traditional performances.
One of the highlights of the Desert Safari in Jodhpur is watching the sunset over the desert. As the sun sets, the golden sands are transformed into a vibrant canvas of colors, with shades of orange, pink, and red blending together in the sky. The beauty of the desert at dusk is truly magical, offering a peaceful and almost surreal experience that will stay with you long after your journey ends.
Camel Safari Jodhpur: A Traditional Desert Experience
No visit to Rajasthan would be complete without experiencing the Camel Safari Jodhpur. Camels, often called the "ships of the desert," have been an integral part of desert life for centuries. Riding a camel through the dunes of the Thar Desert allows you to connect with the region’s history and culture in a unique and authentic way. As you sway gently with the rhythm of your camel, you’ll have time to take in the beauty of the desert at a slower pace, appreciating the vastness of the landscape and the quiet that envelops it.
The Camel Safari Jodhpur typically includes a visit to the ancient town of Osian, located about 65 kilometers from Jodhpur. Osian is famous for its beautifully carved Hindu and Jain temples, some of which date back to the 8th century. The temples are adorned with intricate stone carvings that reflect the artistic and architectural grandeur of ancient Rajasthan. As you explore the town, you’ll be transported back in time, marveling at the craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.
In addition to the temples, the camel safari includes visits to desert villages, where local craftsmen produce traditional handicrafts such as pottery and handwoven textiles. You’ll have the chance to meet these artisans, watch them at work, and purchase their creations as a memento of your journey.
Sustainability and Eco-Tourism
Both the Bishnoi Village Safari and the desert safaris in Jodhpur are rooted in sustainability and eco-tourism. The Bishnoi community, in particular, has long been dedicated to environmental conservation, and their efforts are supported by the tourism industry. By participating in these safaris, you are not only experiencing the beauty and culture of Rajasthan but also contributing to the preservation of its environment and the livelihood of local communities.
The safaris are designed to have a minimal impact on the environment while providing maximum benefits to the local economy. Whether it’s learning about the Bishnoi tribe’s efforts to protect wildlife, supporting local artisans by purchasing handmade goods, or simply being mindful of your surroundings, every aspect of the safari is geared toward sustainable tourism.
Conclusion: A Journey into the Heart of Rajasthan
The Bishnoi Village Safari, Desert Safari in Jodhpur, and Camel Safari Jodhpur offer an unforgettable journey into the heart of Rajasthan’s culture, history, and natural beauty. These experiences go beyond traditional sightseeing, providing a deep connection to the land, its people, and their traditions. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or someone interested in exploring Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage, these safaris have something to offer everyone.
From the eco-friendly practices of the Bishnoi community to the thrilling adventures of the desert safari and the traditional charm of the camel safari, every aspect of these experiences is designed to showcase the true essence of Rajasthan. So, when you visit Jodhpur, make sure to embark on these safaris to discover a side of Rajasthan that few travelers get to see — a land of beauty, tradition, and timeless wonder.

Rajasthan, the "Land of Kings," is renowned for its royal heritage, majestic palaces, and vibrant culture. Beyond its famous landmarks, Rajasthan offers a treasure trove of unique experiences that reflect the state’s rich traditions and breathtaking landscapes. From exploring the ancient forts to witnessing local festivals, the region invites travelers to dive into its diverse history and culture. Each city and village in Rajasthan offers something special, whether it's the serene deserts, colorful markets, or iconic architecture.
For those seeking a truly unforgettable adventure, Rajasthan's unique activities provide the perfect opportunity to explore its hidden gems. Camel safaris through the Thar Desert, hot air balloon rides over Jaipur, or staying in a royal palace offer a different perspective of the state’s royal grandeur. These experiences immerse visitors in the local culture while offering moments of tranquility and adventure, making Rajasthan a must-visit destination for every traveler.

Here are some unique things to do in Rajasthan.
1. A Thar Desert camel safari:
Tumblr media
Sail through the vast Thar Desert on a camel safari, one of Rajasthan's most iconic and unique experiences. For starting this adventure, cities like Jaisalmer, also referred to as the "Golden City," provide the ideal starting point. You'll see the stark beauty of the desert up close as you traverse the golden sand dunes on the back of a camel. You can choose to go on a day trip or prolong your adventure by spending the night under the stars camping in the desert. For a full cultural immersion, these safaris frequently feature traditional Rajasthani performances, regional food, and a bonfire. This is an incredibly memorable experience because of the calm tranquility of the desert and the excitement of riding a camel.
2. Remain in a Historic Mansion:
Tumblr media
Rajasthan is well known for its lavish palaces, many of which are now upscale historical hotels. There's no better way to immerse yourself in the splendor of Rajasthan's past than by booking a stay at one of these royal residences. These hotels, which range from the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur to the breathtaking Lake Palace in Udaipur, combine traditional charm and contemporary conveniences. You'll experience a life fit for a king or queen, surrounded by exquisite furnishings, dexterous carvings, and stunning architecture. In addition to expansive gardens and courtyards, these palaces frequently have royal dining rooms where you may enjoy real Rajasthani food. A visit to a heritage hotel is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the splendor and grace of Rajasthan's past.
3. Discover Jodhpur, the Blue City:
Tumblr media
Jodhpur presents a singular visual treat. Known as the "Blue City" because of the blue-painted houses in its old town. Discovering this vibrant city's tiny streets is an adventure in and of itself. There are many photo opportunities to be had when the view of the blue houses contrasts with the dry landscape. Although the colour blue has historically been connected to Brahmins, or the priestly class, many other people have also come to embrace the colour. Strolling around the streets, you'll come across old havelis, thriving markets, and regional artisans. One of India's biggest and most striking forts, Mehrangarh Fort, towers over the Blue City. Travelers can experience a unique combination of historical insight and cultural immersion when they explore Jodhpur.
4. Attend the Camel Fair in Pushkar:
One of Rajasthan's biggest and most distinctive cultural events is the Pushkar Camel Fair. Every year, the lively Pushkar fair draws traders from all over Rajasthan who come to buy and sell horses, camels, and other livestock. Pushkar is a small town. The fair offers a range of competitions, including camel races and beauty pageants, traditional Rajasthani music, and dance shows, in addition to the camel trading. Shoppers can take in the vibrant atmosphere or indulge in local jewelry, crafts, and textiles. The fair, which usually takes place in October or November, offers a unique chance to get a close-up look at rural life and Rajasthani cultural customs.
5. Flight in a Hot Air Balloon over Jaipur:
A hot air balloon ride over Jaipur offers breathtaking views of the Pink City's famous landmarks and is an incredibly unique and thrilling experience. You'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Amber Fort, City Palace, Jal Mahal, and the busy markets below as you float gently above the city at sunrise or sunset. The ride offers a tranquil diversion from the bustle of the city and a distinctive viewpoint of Jaipur's royal architecture and the surrounding countryside. For thrill-seekers and those seeking a romantic or family-friendly adventure, this aerial adventure is an excellent way to see the city from a new perspective.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, Rajasthan offers a blend of unique and unforgettable experiences that go beyond the ordinary. Whether it's riding camels through the Thar Desert, exploring the Blue City of Jodhpur, or attending the vibrant Pushkar Camel Fair, this land of royalty promises something special for every traveler. These unique activities allow visitors to connect with the state's rich cultural heritage and majestic landscapes. For those seeking a truly immersive experience, a well-curated Rajasthan tour package can ensure you don’t miss out on any of these remarkable adventures.
