TL;DR Version: The Pilgrim from @4RiversSmokehouse is another good entry in the Thanksgiving sandwich game, but The Gobbler from @Arbys is still king. Full Review: It’s the holidays and the push of attention grabbing holiday fare is in full swing. The latest themed sandwich comes to us from 4Rivers, featuring smoked turkey, stuffing (a/k/a “dressing”), turkey gravy, and cranberry chutney on a bun. My first impression was how the taste changed from bite to bite depending upon whether you were at a spot in the sandwich that was heavy with cranberry chutney. This was particularly true when you got a bite containing a whole cranberry, of which there were several. I enjoyed the bites that tasted like stuffing and gravy and I liked the bites that tasted like turkey and cranberry, but the fact that I didn’t know which was coming at any given moment was a problem for me. I’m a big fan of stuffing, so I expected this to be my favorite sandwich of the season. Sadly, the inconsistency of flavor leaves The Gobbler at the top of the heap for now. If I got the Pilgrim again I would try it without the cranberry sauce to maximize my holiday stuffing intake. TL;DR Version: You need to go get The Gobbler from @Arbys right now. Full Review: Following up on my Deep Fried Turkey Club review from a few days ago, I returned to Arby’s last night to try another sandwich from their new Deep Fried Turkey line. To be perfectly honest, I was not looking forward to trying The Gobbler because it sounded like an unappetizing mix of flavors. In case you haven’t seen the commercial, the sandwich is deep fried turkey, cranberry spread, spicy brown honey mustard, pepper bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and Swiss cheese, between two slices of honey wheat bread. I couldn’t figure out how the mustard and cranberry would possibly work together coherently, but I was a fool; a foolish fool. This is one of the best fast food sandwiches I’ve ever had. The cranberry spread was so subtle that I barely noticed it and the spicy honey mustard spread was a perfect compliment to the turkey and the honey wheat bread. As with the turkey club, this is a sandwich I’d expect to get in a deli or a sit-down restaurant. Arby’s is absolutely killing it right now with these sandwiches. It is a little pricey (coming in at a little over $7 for just the sandwich), but I promise it’s worth it for this very large sandwich.
