Just My Thoughts Pt. 34
Tumblr media
If you discuss growth in FT characters and leave out Lucy/Wendy then you’re so wrong. These two girls have started at the lowest level and grown up so much. Quickly summing up Lucy’s growth from a celestial mage that started her magical journey at a very late age (compared to most of the other FT members), she’s the holder of multiple golden Zodiac keys, knows several spells including Gottfried and Urano metria (and of course the new ones in the 100 YQ), can use one of the grand fairy magic (fairy sphere) and has Star dress. That’s just the major parts of her growth as a mage.
Now for Wendy, she’s grown so much as a person and a wizard. I love her commitment to FT. I wonder how often she remembers her old guild because that was a very emotional moment for her to realize they weren’t truly real. I am so glad to see her dive into her dragon slayer magic (her dragon force mode is peak I love the design) alongside her enchantress powers. This is one thing I am so happy Mashima added because it’s perfect for Wendy. She’s truly power considering how young she is and how much potential she has.
For the remainder of the 100 YQ I would love to see more of her enchantress abilities, casting spells and enhancing her magic. Maybe a unison raid with Natsu. Honestly any unison raid would be acceptable. It’s something I thought would be more common but was put on the side like everything else I had high expectations for. Lucy and Juvia need to do another one since they were very first example. So maybe Natsu and Gray can have one or even Natsu and Lucy (to satisfy my NaLu needs).
Back to Wendy, I would also like to see more of her relationship with Sherria. Speaking of which, how’s her return to magic going?! I am sure Wendy does her best to provide as much support and positivity as she can. I would also like to see more of Wendy, Lucy, and Erza as almost a sister bond and wholesome moments between girls who went through so much together that’s not a battle or anything violent. Maybe a filler shopping spree or lunch outing just to relax and enjoy the moment. It’s something Wendy (and all the others need) since she’s still a child. She needs to have the positive vibes too.
I’m just going to add Happy and Carla on here because I just have one major thing I need from them. Did they ever realize the other Exceeds were their parents? Did they ever go to interact with them? How are they doing?! Honestly they could’ve had more involvement considering their flight is very useful. I just want to Happy to know his parents are proud of him and love him. I want Carla to know her mother feels sorry for what she did in the past and that to some extent an actual princess.

Hi, how are you?
What do you think about the fact that Juvia basically stalked Gray for months, was mean to every girl (threatened their life, etc) that came close or even spoke to him (especially Lucy) and that he only feels "obligated to like her" because she saved his life? (like saved victims fall in love with their firefighter or doctor) I want them to work out but if their gender were reversed, everyone would scream that it was grooming. He told her "no" multiple times, he was clearly averse and if a guy would not accept a "no" there would be backlash. Juvia is an amazing character with a lot of development but I think that Fairy Tail often makes fun of serious sexist behavior rather than addressing it. Like making fun of Lucy's naked body or horny old men gawking at young and underage! girls. I'm aware that it's a manga and that Japan has huge issues with gender equality and sexism but I kinda expected more from the new manga/anime. According to Unicef, every 11th boy (and every 8th girl) is a victim of sexual violence. For a long time, nobody took boys being a victim of sexual violence seriously. Of course, Juvia didn't "do" anything to Gray. But it's the same when people said to girls "if a boy is mean to you it means he likes you" (hello Sasuke!). This teaches children that they don't really have a choice and bodily autonomy. Juvia never accepted a "no" and we as the audience should believe that this is her being persistent/ romantic/ etc. It shows: if you just keep harassing and stalking your person of interest, they will eventually like you back. At the end of the original anime, it felt like Gray feels the same and we are made to believe that this him finally realizing his "true" feelings. But it kinda felt like "i'm giving up the fight, you won't stay away anyway". Important notice: I only watched the original anime, so if I missed something in the original manga, please tell me.
hi anon ! i'm good thanks for the ask :) was truly not expecting this lol
first of all, the fact that i've watched fairy tail first when i was younger may bias my analysis and i apologise for that. of course, i've read it again enough to change my opinion on many aspects but the filter still may be a little present. but well you did ask for an opinion haha :)
juvia's obsession and gray's feelings
as you mentioned that you only watched the anime, be aware that it exaggerated juvia's stalking by adding her in scenes where she wasn't actually present and by creating a weird running gag with her obsession for gray. however, she does have an obsession with gray, which can't be denied, and which lead her to be pushy with both gray and her "love rivals" in different directions. but rather than this, she wants to prove him and show him that she loves him whenever she has the occasion, because it's usually what you want to do when you're proud to love someone. it's more clumsiness than wanting to force him into something. since it can make gray uncomfortable, it's not defendable to say it's okay every time, but there are plenty of moments when these are cute attentions rather than stalking. she's not hindering gray's job, sleep and life, by repeating how she loves him. juvia still respects gray's boundaries by not forcing him to go on missions with her or following him at his place.
besides this, i don't think you missed other important points from the main manga, but sorry if i'm spoiling the 100 years quest later on.
if you think that gray feels like he owes her his life and must return her love, then i strongly disagree. gray already had feelings for her by that time, that's why he tried to commit suicide as well to save her. he didn't feel obligated to love her just because of that. he said before the final arc that he wanted to talk about these feelings seriously with her, and had already shown proofs of love by spending time with her during the timeskip after tartaros. gray considers juvia as more than a simple friend since longer than what he says, otherwise you couldn't explain why he chose to create a unison raid technique with her at the grand magic games, nor why he could assure their bond was strong enough for this. he's not avoiding juvia like the plague, or apprehending seeing her, and that is the case since their first encounter. he's glad that she's joining the guild and helping them. in the main series, he feels more reluctant to public display of attention than to her showing her love. in the spin-off, he's being more open to his feelings than before and that's why everyone is shocked around him, but juvia seems quite used to it.
that is all about how i perceive the characterisation of gray and juvia. sorry if i've missed some points, tell me if it's the case :)
now, i feel like most of your criticism is about how fairy tail, and the shounen manga genre in general is associated with sexual fan service issues and sexism. my blog isn't so much of a place to deal with such political and societal questions, but let me try to answer at least partly.
sexual fan service and other borderline behaviours issues
first, when you talk about the gender reverse thing, don't you think it's more the other way around ? i can't see people reacting more to juvia's insistence if she were a man, because you already quoted other issues related to sexism and fairy tail fans don't really complain about it. or at least, they make abstraction of it. have you ever seen someone calling natsu a pervert/stalker because he's breaking into lucy's house all the time ? the most important thing remains to not be hypocritical with these situations : if you consider juvia a stalker, then at least you have to admit that natsu breaking into lucy's place is not okay. and as i said earlier, i don't remember juvia even following gray to his place even once. but that's not the main point here.
to keep it to what you said about the gender reverse, i think it's actually the contrary, and that people tend to accept men's obsessions/non-con acts more than women's. that's why the word "stalker" is so easy on juvia even when she's mostly just watching gray without any bad intentions.
fairy tail has a fair amount of wrong sides that you shouldn't teach to young teenagers. but is this supposed to be a life lesson to them, in the first place ? can you choose to show fairy tail to your kids just so they know how important friends can be, how you should treasure your bonds, how you can be free if you don't harm the others ? is it the best show to watch when you want to learn about care and freedom, even when the sexualisation of both boys and girls is overly present and when the said characters are sometimes minors ?
nowadays, i feel like the shounen anime genre tries to get better on these points, slightly, here and there (jujutsu kaisen being the most obvious example that comes to my mind) but the 100 years quest sequel is in fact directly linked to the main series and since the author is the same, he didn't bother to change anything in his way of making fan service. he likes doing that in his gags and art, it's part of the vibe of his series, so he won't take that away nor even reduce it. i'm a bit sorry that you can't have high expectations of the 100 years quest just because it's more recent, regarding the sexualisation of the characters or of their borderline behaviours. but if you enjoyed the main series, then there's no reason why you couldn't enjoy the sequel because of these.
i hope it answers your questions ! thank you so much for the ask again, i don't usually analyse fairy tail characters this thoroughly because although they are all really good and enjoyable characters, i can't guess if the author wanted them to be so deep after all. have a nice day !
xx

I remember way back in 2012, there was an answer as to why Mashima decided the outcome of Juvia’s fight on Tenrou. So get this, Juvia was actually supposed to defeat Meredy in that fight, but because of the point in time when the chapters of the arc were being released, areas in Japan were currently hit by a tsunami. So instead of waves of her power being seen as “destruction” it was changed to waves of “love”.
Tumblr media
All good man! I won't ever get upset a people for keeping me informed on fandom stuff.
Though I do think I'll use this as a way to go more in depth with my explanation and give an answer for people who don't always check responses because I know sometimes people reblog posts without seeing things I say. (To the anon this will be a bit repetitive to what you read so if you don't want to read it again with longer explanations all good!)
For anyone curious about my response: my major issue with Mashima using this reasoning is that it is another example of him not having nuance in how he writes. He's always on one end of an extreme scale with characters, and there's never a midground. People are sadistically evil or they're good guys. We never see a redemption arc properly play out if they change sides. People are either in love or not, and we don't see a build-up of emotion or scenes to develop feelings. Characters either are super strong with magic already, or they're wimps with magic he never focuses on developing or honing regardless of how interesting it could be.
I was even talking to my sister about it, and she pointed out, "It was an S-class trial, so juvia being adaptive and problem solving would've made sense." We could've had juvia meld into the water and surprise attack. Taken the battle to dry land to give her an actual challenge. Heck, if we want to have the link scene, we could've just had juvia going easy on Meredy or Meredy using Juvia's sympathy against her to get the upper hand.
Mashima saying the only options in the fight are juvia not using her powers almost at all or juvia killing a younger girl is essentially him telling the audience "juvia can't control her powers or hold her punches" and it makes her seem not skilled enough to be eligible for S-class bringing on confusion as to why she's there, and contradicts the fact that Juvia has always had a pretty strong handle on her powers. She's one of the mages who was born with her magic. A big part of my aggrevation with Mashima handling battles is that he comes up with conceptually interesting enemies, but we get the same repetitive fights every time without any thought into how powers could be creatively implemented. Now I'm aware that fights are not easy to write, but there were still simple ways they could've been improved.
Juvia specifically is a character who suffered horribly from Mashima nerfing characters. She's incredibly strong during phantomlord but consistently he removes portions of her arsenal (her dematerializing comes and goes as a major example, also if i remember she never controls the rain again??? Like thats such a cool concspt to use in later battles) to make her enemies a tangible threat to her rather than simply writing around who she is and focusing on what her actual weaknesses could be.
It's why I don't think I'll ever seek out answers Mashima gives to people pointing out flaws in his writing. Because all the ones I hear sound like excuses made to avoid criticism rather than valid explanations to fill in gaps left by implication or a simple lack of information.

Sometimes, we tend to forget that Juvia saw Gray die in front of her eyes, and in a very disturbing way.
Tumblr media
He pushed her out of the way, to save her, and consequently lost his precious life.
And let's assume -based on her background- that Juvia still thinks that her life isn't worth saving.
This was not a heartbreak, this was grief, she experienced loss and grieved for him for a minute or two, but it was definitely long for Juvia.
Which makes more sense into why Juvia worries about him, not because she is in love with him only, but what happened before has effected her deeply.
Mashima could have added more into it, Fanfictions did the job tho, Juvia having nightmares about his death, overthinking, over worry, she experienced this all, behind the scenes that is.

Sorry bout that? X( so. Do over For Fairy Tail: 💛❤💀🏳️‍🌈💔
💛: What is a popular ship you just can’t get behind, and why? Natsu x Gray. They're great friends and narrative foils, but when it comes to shipping them, I simply Do Not See it, and trying to think about them as a couple for too long makes my brain hurt. (Also, Laxus x Freed, but more on that later.)
🤍: Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think? Juvia! I've been seeing a lot of salt surrounding her lately, and those haters are all wrong. Juvia is a wonderful and kind character and I adore her.
💀: If you had to choose one major character to die, who would you choose? Makarov. His sacrifice in the final battle was extremely poignant, and retconning his death removes all real meaning from it.
🏳️‍🌈: Which character who is commonly headcanoned as queer doesn’t seem queer to you? Laxus. I'm sorry (no, I'm not), but this is one of the most heterosexual men I have ever seen in my life:
Tumblr media
This guy right here is a card-carrying member of the Straight White Males' Club (affectionate) and I genuinely don't get how y'all don't see it.
💔: If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose? A major character, hmm? That's hard, I love them all and the story would not be the same without any one of them. If I have to pick maybe Erza or Wendy or Mirajane or Happy or Carla. (I adore all of of them, but I do think any single one of them could have been cut out and/or fused with another and the main plot could have been reworked without too much issue.)
Send me an unpopular ask!

Song + HC Ask Game for Gruvia 💙
Hey there, Anon-Friend! Thank you so much for the ask and for playing my song + headcanon game! Gruvia is a fun pairing! 🥰
Your song and headcanons are below the cut! I apologize if they're too unexpected. 🙈
I actually really like Gruvia as a ship, but I'll be honest with you that the first song that came to my mind when I saw this ask was "Taylor The Latte Boy," and now all I can think about is a Gruvia Coffee Shop AU where Gray is an edgy barista who Juvia admires from afar. 😅😂 So I guess that's what we're going with here...
Gruvia Coffee Shop AU Headcanons:
Gray is working his way through university by working part-time as a barista at a coffee shop. Most of his classes are in the afternoons, so he tends to work mornings which are the busiest time of day for the shop. After a while, he starts to recognize some of the regulars who come in, including Juvia, who he thinks is very pretty (though he probably would never admit it).
Juvia is also a university student but in a completely different program (she is studying to be a teacher whereas Gray is studying engineering), and she comes into the coffee shop every morning to pick up a latte before her classes which are all in mornings. She has admired the "edgy and mysterious" barista Gray for quite some time but is too shy to properly introduce herself.
One day on a strangely slow morning, Gray starts a conversation with Juvia while he makes her coffee and the two are properly introduced. They learn that they attend the same university, and Gray mentions that he is in a band.
It turns out that Gray is in the same band that Juvia's long-time friend, Gajeel, had recently joined, and they run into each other again when Juvia goes to see Gajeel play. They get to talking and really hit it off.
Juvia is clearly very smitten, but it takes Gray a while to admit to himself how he feels about her and that he would like to go out with her. For a while, they mainly just chat at the coffee shop or when Juvia comes to the band's events.
Meanwhile, Gray always gives Juvia extra cream, sugar, foam, or flavor syrups in her coffee, but other than that, he tries to be pretty discreet about his feelings.
Eventually, however, Gray can no longer lie to himself, and knowing the university semester is about to end and worrying that he will lose touch with Juvia over the summer and miss his chance with her forever, he finally asks her out on a date (but he doesn't take her out for coffee 😉).

Just My Thoughts Pt. 4
Magic/Teams
Sometimes I just wish that Fairy Tail would use some spells/magic more wisely. Or even have more unison raids. I wonder if Hiro Mashima forgets about them sometimes or just doesn’t care about them as much as the basic spells/magics.
Examples:
Lucy and Juvia did a unison raid and literally never mentioned it again. I feel like it could’ve been used in so many battles to at least give them the upper hand. Not to mention, this was the very first (I believe) unison raid shown in the anime/manga. Honestly, I feel like their relationship is underrated and overshadowed by “love rivalry.” I think they make a pretty cool duo.
Tumblr media
Natsu is one the characters that I think relates to this a lot. He essentially consumes different elements (even though it makes him sick afterwards) and is able to use that power during battles. I think he could’ve used those more often. Lightning is one that Natsu does end up using a few times which I am very pleased with. However, he could use the black flames from Tenrou Island arc more since he did empty out his magic powers to consume it. I think having these could’ve made him a lot stronger if he used them often.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cana used Fairy Glitter a few time. I feel like she could’ve utilized it more since Mavis is willing to give her the power to save Fairy Tail. I think she could’ve also used her card magic more often than displayed. I know she’s not a main character but she has some input in the story. I loved it when she saved everyone during the Tartaros arc with her quick thinking. It shows how smart she is despite being shown as a drunk carefree person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since Yukino, Lucy, and the Princess Hisui are celestial mages, I think they have the potential for one of the best unison raids. I know that they did Gottfried (I think that’s how it’s spelled) and a few other spells together, however I think they would’ve been wonderful if they worked together more often. I think that the 12 zodiac spirits used together has a lot of magical potential that wasn’t displayed in the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a lot more thoughts on this so I might make another post later.
What are your thoughts? And who would you like to see working together or spells you thinks should’ve be used more often?
