BTVS Speaking Time: Adults Men vs. Women edition part 2 (racing bar chart)
Inspired by this great coraniaid post, I created the Adults Men vs. Women edition of the speaking time racing bar chart in part 1. (It includes the top adults by speaking time, the top 7 adult women and the top 5 adult men. No demons or vampires included.) Spoilers for the show BTW!
Giles has an enormous amount of speaking time, so I wanted to explore that. Is it true that if we exclude Giles (who is Buffy's father figure) that the adult men and women have equivalent speaking times? (Of course this ignores that of the top 5 men only 1 dies and of the top 5 women they all die, but let's ignore death for a minute.)
Answer: Nope. Even excluding Giles the top 4 adult men have more speaking time than the top 7 adult women.
(Again, credit to J. Freedland who did the GitHub data work.) Details below the cut!
There are 4 bars in this chart. The top one is "Top 5 M", so this includes all top 5 adult men by speaking time, or more simply "Men." The next bar is "Top 4 M", this is the same as "Top 5 M" but excluding Giles. Think of it as "Men without Giles." The next bar is "Top 7 W," this is the top 7 adult women by speaking time. And the last bar is "Top 5 W," this is the top 5 adult women. You can think of this as Women without Ms. Kroger or Olivia if you like.
The interactive categories for this chart are Men, Men without Giles, and Women. They are color-coded in the chart and you can add or remove them at will.
While Giles does skew the Top 5 Men's numbers with his speaking time, even excluding him, the top 4 adult men have more speaking time than the top 7 adult women. It's not a TON, but it is a noticeable difference.
Same as in Part 1: For the purposes of these 13 characters, they are assumed to be men or women. This is assuming that all 13 characters are non-binary.
Same as in Part 1: The top 5 adult men by speaking time are: Rupert Giles (most speaking time), Riley Finn, Robin Wood, Principal Snyder, and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Note that of these 5, only 1 of them dies during the show.
Same as in Part 1: The top 7 adult women by speaking time are: Joyce Summers (most speaking time), Jenny Calendar, Maggie Walsh, Gwendolyn Post, Catherine Madison (Amy's Mom), Ms. Doris Kroger (Dawn's social worker), and Olivia Williams (Rupert's British friend and romantic interest). Note that of these 7, the top 5 all die during the show.
Same as in Part 1: Joyce and Jenny and Maggie have speaking time after their deaths, because their ghost will appear, or the First will use their body.
Made using Flourish, it was free. This still lacks captions, which I hope to add in later. Will update if I do. End goal is a Tableau dashboard to dig into the full data, but this is fun for now.
This is a summary based on the cumulative speaking time per episode for these 13 characters in seconds. (The original J. Freedland data did the work of compiling this for each character for each episode. Note that on a high-level review it seems accurate. And the original data combines E01 and E02 for S06 into one entry.)
Happy to share the source data (currently in excel) upon request, however it is really just the raw csv from J. Freedland's GitHub in excel, and then basic math making it cumulative to put into Flourish.
If you have any requests for this type of chart for BTVS let me know!

BTVS Speaking Time: Adults Men vs. Women edition part 1 (racing bar chart)
Inspired by this great coraniaid post, I created the Adults Men vs. Women edition of the speaking time racing bar chart. It includes the top 7 adult women by speaking time, as outlined by coraniaid. It also includes the top 5 adult men by speaking time. No demons or vampires included. This chart has the details for each of the 13 characters, so it is part 1.
(Again, credit to J. Freedland who did the GitHub data work.) Details below the cut, includes show spoilers!
For the purposes of these 13 characters, they are assumed to be men or women. This is assuming that all 13 characters are non-binary. Giles is his own category only because his speaking time is so much greater than everyone else's. He is the top adult man per speaking time in the show.
The top 5 adult men by speaking time are: Rupert Giles (most speaking time), Riley Finn, Robin Wood, Principal Snyder, and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Note that of these 5, only 1 of them dies during the show.
The top 7 adult women by speaking time are: Joyce Summers (most speaking time), Jenny Calendar, Maggie Walsh, Gwendolyn Post, Catherine Madison (Amy's Mom), Ms. Doris Kroger (Dawn's social worker), and Olivia Williams (Rupert's British friend and romantic interest). Note that of these 7, the top 5 all die during the show.
There are INTERACTIVE CATEGORIES!! They are color-coded in the chart and you can add or remove them at will. The categories are Giles, Men, and Women.
Joyce and Jenny and Maggie have speaking time after their deaths, because their ghost will appear, or the First will use their body.
Made using Flourish, it was free. This still lacks captions, which I hope to add in later. Will update if I do. End goal is a Tableau dashboard to dig into the full data, but this is fun for now.
