2021 Megaman Valentine’s Day Contest Results

Among the many things this past year or so has tested us with is delays, and I apologize that this year’s Valentine’s Day contest results are included in that. I certainly did not plan on this taking until March to get completed, and I am sincerely sorry to have kept you all waiting. But hopefully it is all worth the wait!!

Thanks once again to every single one of you who participated! I will be contacting the winners soon enough. Work will probably keep me from replying to everyone immediately, but I will send a message about prizes hopefully within 24 hours.

Also, my thanks to @subzeroiceskater for helping out with judging this year. Not to mention the promo pic above and other assorted bonuses that always bring me a big smile. I might say this seemingly every year, but you all made judging this VERY hard. It might have something to do with the themes as well, but I think both of us flipped and rearranged our rankings repeatedly, and even then, it was hard to decide on who would place. XD Each one of you did an amazing job!

After the break, you’ll see the winners for both categories, along with all of the entries. Raffle prize winners will be noted below by their alias, as well.

Category 1: Kiss From a Rosered (Talent)

For our talent category this year, the theme focused on your favorite Megaman characters giving roses to their special someone, along with incorporating the symbolism of specific rose colors within the piece. That rose color was also to be the predominant color within the piece, to the best of your ability.

A grand total of 9 entries were submitted for this category. You can see the full gallery of all entries at full-size [HERE]. Each entrant’s name will also link to their individual pieces at full-size.

1.) Sapphire: *$100 prize*

I love the depth, angle, and color grading of these—notice how Roll’s black linework is at the forefront of the pic but colors mixes with the lights and colors from the sun further along the pic. There’s a lot to admire about how everything easy to read with so many competing elements like the similar hues and bright lighting.

Pink roses usually mean a gentler sort of love but did you know that different shades of pink could signify different things as well? A darker shade may mean gratitude; medium shade could be about a first love or congratulations while a light shade may mean admiration. Tron holding a singular pink rose with varying shades of pink while literally tripping over herself and a Servbot could only mean—that this is hilarious.

From a technical standpoint, I think your piece clearly felt the most polished, crisp and virtually professional of the bunch. But more than that, I felt it also best gave off the vibe of the rose color dominating the piece, but in very subtle, beautiful ways. Where as the pink sunset causes many of the normally white areas, like Roll’s collar/sleeves, parts of Gustaff, and more, to ooze that pink lighting. Even with her klutziness, you still also portrayed the feeling of sweetness, admiration and appreciation that a pink rose conveys. Just so pretty, calming, and joyful to look at!

2.) Forceway: *$75 prize*

There is a sort of gentle irony with how Skull Man and Shade Man are both robots modeled after horror symbols—skulls and vampires—but are here surrounded by a soft sea of pink roses. The dark night is often depicted as a primal fear because it hides our deepest fears but here—illuminated by the bright shining moon—the night is transformed into a scene of love—perhaps devotion, with how Shade is gently cradling Skull, as well with the church bell in the background. This is a very tender piece mixing the shadows and the sweet.

I know most digital art programs have the brushes and shortcuts to make detailing things like roses a lot easier, but your bed of roses certainly look all done by hand on your own, and that alone impressed me a ton! Based off of the Ariga Megamix tale of Skull Man not feeling appreciated or having a family after Cossack stored him away, I felt the pink roses and Shade showing him that he is actually appreciated here was a fantastic conceptual choice. Purples in the sky and Shade’s body split the canvas and contrast with the pink well, including how you used the pink for some of the stars in the sky. Beautiful job!

3.) DigitallyFanged: *$50 prize*

Yellow is a bright color, often evoking the sun, warmth, light, joy and hope. With roses, its positive connotations continue with possible meanings of friendship, care and remembrance. Tabby’s piece seems to evoke the last one the strongest—with Zero, broken and forgotten in a lab—but, not entirely, because of a bond that is stronger than apparent death lives on—even if in this moment, it’s only a memory. Even the roses are not real—just projections of what was once alive. This is fantastic use contrast with the dark, moody blues against the vivid, almost defiant yellows; and the repeated little motifs such as X crying and the water drops falling all over Zero. It stands out from the rest of happy entries with how sad it is but it still manages to be hopeful.

Zero’s blonde locks certainly are an iconic part of his design, so playing off of that and focusing on yellow as your rose color fit perfectly. You definitely made this a very emotive piece considering technically, neither of these two are even alive and moving here! As mentioned above, the little details like the water droplets balancing against Cyber Elf X’s tears, the digital lines to make it appear like X has created the cyber-roses for Zero, and Zero’s battle damage caught my eye immediately. You certainly captured the yellow rose symbolism of remembrance and friendly affection beautifully!!

It’s so poetic about how this contest theme is about how the language of flowers is used to communicate feelings beyond just using words; and so, the comic is completely silent, relying on actions to convey its meaning. Yellow roses could mean friendship, care and affection; and it’s shown wonderfully with how Iris and Lan are so thoughtful with one another. It’s so cute how Iris missed Lan only because he was already out buying roses for her. Given how hard comics are to make and how this is fully colored, I really wanted to give this first place—however I felt the color usage of yellow could have been stronger, especially with the last page, where it would have had the most impact. I had to squint and zoom out to even see if the lighting had changed. Still, it’s such a very warm and lovely work.

I always appreciate the effort people put into making multiple-page comics for these contests, and this is no exception! Even without dialogue, you did a great job at conveying your story through your art in each panel and it was easily understandable. Another utilizing the yellow rose, I certainly felt the friendship and warmth in your tale. As Subzero mentioned, the only thing keeping it from placing was that the yellow colors weren’t as dominant in other areas of the pic, besides the panel by Sal. Still, your coloring was very crisp and vibrant throughout each page, and it was an awesome submission!

With the red for Metal Man, orange for Cut Man and the explosion of yellow flowers, that’s the trifecta of warm colors. Yellow roses could mean delight and this pic is delightful in all ways. Cut looks so cute practically swimming in the sea of flowers and greenery, as does Metal’s adorable expression—which is a feat since he only shows his eyes. I also really like the juxtaposition and balance of this piece from: the rust-brown car against green-yellow nature running wild, and Metal holding a bouquet meanwhile Cut’s covered with plants. It makes me want to get some fresh air myself!

Cut Man looks grateful for being able to ride in that pickup bed of flowers, and I have a feeling the two of them had a wonderful time just snipping and sawing away at all the stems to gather them all. XD Love how the yellow and oranges play off of both character’s color schemes nicely. The subtlety of the yellow flowers in the foreground, along with the sun and tree in the background all play off each other well, too! Just an absolutely cute pic!

What a fantastic composition. Dark-Dullahan does away with most color, leaving the colors of the mixed-bouquet roses as the main focal point. Classic red for romance, a gentler pink for affection, mixed yellow roses to signify caring and probably so much more—seems like Nana can’t contain her feelings for Massimo. I love how the close up of the bouquet doesn’t just form a kind of heart at the top but serves as the divider between the two, like a diptych. With such a wonderful offering, Massimo would surely accept her feelings.

As you brought to my attention, your mixed bouquet had a few different meanings, such as the dark pink representing thanks to Massimo for saving Nana from Silver Horn, and the red tips on the yellow roses to symbolize falling in love. Certainly got those vibes from her shy demeanor, as she sheepishly tries to hand them to him. Also agree with Subzero that the line from the bouquet nicely works as a way to separate them uniquely with the background. Sorry you weren’t able to complete it as fully as you had hoped, but the concept behind it certainly was strong!

Donnie also sent in an alternate version made during the creative process, in a different artistic style, that I still feel needs to be shared, as well. Fun to see the contrast, yet still have the same feeling and mood to the piece.

Oh, I adore this one. It reminds me of a movie poster with the tagline. I love the extra PINK flourishes of the letterings like with the Mega Man logo color change and cute pixelated font and heart. Both Rock and Roll’s expressions are so cute, too—with his more subdued smile contrasted with her exuberant grin. Much like how the pink rose could mean many things like thoughtfulness, cheer or as a show of appreciation, this piece is positively sparkling with affection, hearts and all. It’s clever how the sunset is giving the picture an overall pinkish-red hue while having the yellow light as an outline. A darling piece.

With pink roses again, I truly liked the additional hue adjustments where you can feel the warmth and see the lighter pink mixed into their skintone, or areas normally of white - from eyes to teeth to the Megaman logo - that have taken on the pink in it’s place. With the painterly watercolor style you used, it all blends in nicely. Even in your earlier version, I feel you brought a strong game with the hues, but toned down the red from that version to make it feel much stronger towards pink, with a tighter crop of your canvas. It was fun to see how it evolved, and strengthened your piece in doing so! Fabulous job!

No better way to show how madly in love you are than a bouquet of roses that run the gamut of—I can’t call these warm colors because these passions are running hot. Orange seems to be the dominant color here—which in roses could symbolize a love that’s passionate, fierce and deep. It’s also expressed nicely with the two lovers embracing, engaged in mid kiss, their bodies also forming a subtle heart shape, to emphasize the flurry of hearts around them. This one has a very clever framing (eh? EH?). The color white is often associated with purity, innocence and hope, and with white roses—weddings and marriage. Sonia dons the classic white wedding dress which has a très élégante design—and the little Lyra on her belt is very cute. The pink background is also very romantic and a nice way to tie in with her theme colors. I dig the lovey-dovey feel of Geo doing the classic bridal carry while clasping a single white rose...but seeing the thorns, I think he better watch his hand!

For a theme emphasizing color within the pic, I salute you for taking the biggest challenge in choosing white. In many ways, it could have been the hardest to keep as a predominant color, but still make the pic interesting and visually appealing. Choosing to have the petals all around the frame, with the bouquet nearby was a clever touch. With white often used for weddings and new beginnings, I think the concept of your piece worked just right, where it was subtle, but still incorporated enough other color to give the piece some life.

Category 2: Kawaii-rimi (Humor)

For our humor category this year, the theme focused on your favorite Megaman character gifting the plush form of another Megaman character to their crush, instantly created by a ninja-like character, to play off of the Kawarimi concept from the EXE series.

Everything about the pic is so fun and colorful: from Sal’s mischievous grin of accomplishment, Miyu being completely shocked by her chibi doppelganger (check out that body language!) and Masa’s confused expression.

Yes, while to some, Sal might not be the first one they think of when they think ninja in the Megaman Universe, but I certainly thought she still fits the bill in her design. Usually we don’t see this much emotion or shock out of Miyu, so seeing her torque her body, taken aback at a doll of herself, is amusing in it’s own right. Meanwhile, nothing fazes Masa. And a bit of randomness: oh man, seeing Masa’s head in profile, with his bandana...wow, I never realized how much his head shape with the bandana looks like a fish’s. I can’t unsee it now. Anyways, I also agree that the color, polish, and fun vibe made this a worthy winner!

Very cute, although after the DiVE V-Day event, we all know this is a ruse and your pal boobeyes only belongs to the Ferham Fanclub. XD

Aside from getting his own Super Adaptor, this is probably the closest we’ve got to seeing Tango and Blues merged as one. LOL I’m sure that plush would have a ton of fans wishing it actually existed. The panels where Blues embarrassingly hides behind his scarf and gets pet like a cat had me laughing! Very cute and adorable comic, that certainly had the most depth in terms of the theme of this category!

3. Do you ever journal- does it work for you? What do you write if you journal? Do you have the same prompts, or do you sit down and just write whatever’s on your mind? I’m not great at journaling, and I think I want to be better at it.

I was searching through my gallery for something to cheer me up, and I saw this pic from The Time Traveller's Wife:

I didn't read much today :(( costs too much energy. I have like, 4 books and 10 pdfs that I haven't read. and I want to, but I can't :((

2. If you are a hero going on a quest, what would the quest be, where would it take you in the world (or fantasy world), who would be your companions, and how would you get there?

THIS IS SUCH A FUN ASK!?!

Hero: I resonate so much with paladins. I'm more of a fighter type that uses some magic but doesn't wholly rely on it. I'll be the short but explosive trope. (also. righteous anger. FUCKK)

Quest: Preventing the barriers that blocks the Otherworld (working on the name) from this reality. It needs to be resealed every ten years or so from both sides at the same time. The time for resealing will become apparent bc humans would pop up in random places (they were driving/cycling/walking then got lost. too many wrong turns and they ended up in there). And in turn, flora, fauna, and other sentient creatures end up here. These humans, when found, would be manhandled to the city and forced to go to this quest. Also these humans are like. running away from their lives and have a sense of adventure. It's different this time, though. The barriers tear with time naturally, but now there seems to be someone or something destroying them on purpose.

Where It Takes Us: travelling a LOT. I would want to see everything, exposed to their cultures and such! (plus the Tears are also the way back home) Including but not limited to: wading through a beautiful swamp and meeting swamp creatures, sailing a fucking ETHEREAL ocean and swimming down an underwater cave, trekking a mountain range to kill a dragon but end up befriending her and her kids, climbing a huge tree to save a little kid that's stuck on the top, hunting creatures that blend into the shadows, etc.

Companions: with the narrative, I honestly won't have a choice. I could say that elias, paul, justin, and I were walking somewhere together and got lost. coincidentally (wink) you, ren, and kat are there too 😌💟 and other random people. I also would love a murder of crows as animal companions 🥺 and also we would have people from that world travelling along with us, to help with the seals and as guides.

How would we get there: like I said, we have to get lost first, then found, then get back home through the tear. that's the only time we'll ever be there though, since it doesn't call the same humans twice.

I came up with this on the spot don't judge me for how childish it sounds 😞🙏🏽 fun ask tho 💟💟

i've tried in the past. nope it hasn't worked for me but i'm stubborn. i'll keep trying. if you're talking about a daily journal. I have a "bad times" journal for when I'm overflowing with negative emotions again (like earlier)

on the left is what was supposed to be a fun kind of journal, then things stopped being fun in my life. on the right is a journal mom gave to me in 2020. it's the best paper. I was so excited about This Savage Song 😌💟 it's very dear to me. no I don't look at it objectively I allow myself to have happy things.

but! your ask reminded me that I do have an ongoing project of sorts!

I take quotes that I like from books and paste them together. they may or may not form a narrative. this was before I knew what web weaving was.

a problem that I had before is comparing what I did to others. theirs were pretty and aesthetic and organized. I had a talk with myself and said, "the reason why we can't make a proper journal is that we try so hard to be pretty and perfect. we rip out pages when we spell something wrong or colored past the lines. we're not them. we're not pretty. or perfect. or aesthetic. we're messy. we make mistakes. stop trying to be pretty and just be yourself."

so yeah I love that weird little notebook. I also rip out weird drawings I do when I feel horrible and stick them:

and I also put words that I think are pretty and spill my problems out! I'd give a pic but I think I hit the picture limit. oh wait I didn't. here:

well there were a few reasons:

1). I never used the recolors myself. I like the colors I just never used them 2). I got comments about the colors looking too metalic 3). I had started Patreon around that time and doing recolors for 3 (and sometimes more) hairs every month would have been a lot. Especially bc my DDS was broken so I had to do them a bit more complicated than just saving as DDS.

I know that some people really liked my recolors, and I am sorry if me stopping caused any issues. There are actions for the hair colors and recoloring hair is really easy to learn and do.

honestly most of the time i do stuff differently. I run the same topaz/sharpening actions every time and then add some shadows and play with curves. Nothing that is super intensive tbh. I wouldn’t even know how to go about doing a tutorial tbh

Day 3: Frost

Bernie shudders and pulls up the lapels of her coat in an attempt to fend off the cold. Holby hasn't been this icy around Christmas in years. Or maybe she is not used to these temperatures anymore after spending the better part of the past two decades in more arid regions. Either way, she should have bothered to put on a beanie, she thinks, or at least her scarf that she now realises she has left in her locker at work.

Her shift had been more stressful than she would have thought possible on a calm - boring, a scornful voice in her head interjects - ward like Keller. Two post-op patients had gone into arrest at the same time, so she had to spend her free afternoon in theatre. With only two hours left before the shops close, she left the hospital in a hurry, hence the lack of protection against frostbite.

Bernie tries to avoid the jolly crowd that is swarming around the various stands of Holby’s very own Christmas market, not willing to waste any more time. She usually quite enjoys Christmas shopping, always likes to make an effort and surprise her loved ones with little presents that aren’t on their respective wish lists. Granted, that hasn’t always gone well - looking back, Marcus’ non-existent sense of humour should have been warning enough not to marry him, she muses.

This year, however, she finds herself at a loss. What do you get your newly estranged children who are still bitter about their parents’ divorce? She is not even sure they will accept her gifts and peace offerings, which is why she has put the dreaded task off until now. Which leaves her with less than three days to find something. Brilliant.

She straightens her shoulders and decides to pay Charlotte’s favourite record shop a visit first - only to be stopped by a slender young woman who steps right in front of her, waving her smartphone at Bernie’s face.

“Excuse me,” the girl beams at her, the words a bit slurred, “could you please take a photo of my mum and I? Great!” With that she hands her the phone and skips back to where her mother is waiting. Right. Okay.

Bernie makes to follow her but stops short: the other woman is stunning! She is the spitting image of her daughter, with a cute cleft in her chin and dark brown eyes. Eyes that are currently sparkling with barely concealed amusement as she raises a neatly sculpted brow and half-heartedly chastises her daughter for "harassing strangers for a silly photo."

Realising that this might not be the right moment to explore her new-found attraction to eyebrows - who would have thought? - Bernie shakes herself out of her temporary stupor, mumbles a shy “hello,” and busies herself with the girl’s phone. Keep calm, Wolfe.

She offers the women a few vague instructions and manages a number of decent snaps before the girl comes over and eagerly snatches the phone from her hand to scroll through the gallery.

“Mum, look! We are so pretty!” she gushes, then turns around to address Bernie.

“Look! Isn’t my mum pretty?”

Pretty? Beautiful, attractive, devastatingly sexy, Bernie thinks, then coughs and chokes out a strangled “um…-”

“Thank you so much! Can I hug you?” the girl interrupts her and flings her arms around Bernie’s neck, not bothering to wait for a response.

“Ellie!” The mother joins them to save Bernie from her daughter’s exorbitant display of gratitude. “I’m so sorry. She had a bit too much of the mulled cider, I’m afraid.”

Bernie shrugs it off and offers her a smile. “Don’t worry, no harm done. At least she’s a happy drunk. My ex-husband used to get mopey when he had too much wine,” Bernie rolls her eyes at the memory.

Her assessment prompts the other woman to chuckle. “Ah, yes, today is one of her better days. She was right to thank you, though. Serena Campbell, nice to meet you”

Bernie takes the offered hand, notices how soft and warm it is and almost forgets to answer. “Bernie Wolfe”

“As in Major Berenice Wolfe, the new consultant on Keller?”

“Bernie is fine. But how- oh! Do you work at Holby City Hospital, too?”

“Yes, on AAU, “ Serena smiles, then frowns. “One should think that our ward would suit your talents much better than Keller?”

“Well, the spot on Keller was on offer, I applied and that was that.” Bernie shrugs, unsure what else to say. She would love to work on AAU and getting to work with Serena would certainly be a bonus.

Then she realises that they are still holding each other’s hands.

Serena seems to notice at the same time. She doesn’t pull away, though. Instead, she encloses Bernie’s hand with both of her own.

“Oh dear, your fingers are like icicles. What are you doing, walking about without mittens or a scarf at least? You must be freezing! Here,” Serena untangles her own scarf from her neck and wraps it around Bernie’s, “that’s better.”

“But.. won’t you be cold now?” Bernie stutters. She is painfully aware that she is blushing at the gentle touch, hopes she can blame it on the cold.

“Ah, don’t worry,” Serena rummages through her handbag, then points at Ellie who doesn’t look as energetic anymore. “I need to get this one home now, anyway. You can buy me a coffee at Pulses when you give it back.” After a moment’s hesitation, Serena envelops Bernie in a brief hug.

Ellie smiles at Bernie. “I wanted to say thanks again for the pics. It was nice to meet you, Bernie. You’re great!”

“Hear, hear!” Serena winks at Bernie and links arms with her daughter. “Come on, it’s time to go home.”

Bernie can’t help but stare after Serena until she is out of sight.

Later, when she arrives home after what eventually turned into a surprisingly successful little shopping spree, she finds a slip of paper in her coat pocket. Below a phone number it reads:

2 Months since my last page, wow. My Sendai Holiday (April 2018) - Part 2: Ice Rink Sendai

Part 1 was about Yuzuru’s Olympic Victory Parade, the main purpose of my trip. The other purpose was to just enjoy being in Yuzu’s hometown. After I became his fan (since 2014 Sochi Olympics), Sendai is a place that I often saw in photos and videos and read about (and translated about), and so I have been wanting to visit for the longest time. The 2018 victory parade made it the perfect time to go. Yuzu said during one press conference, “By all means, please come to Sendai and spend some money.” And so I did! :D

(It’s another one of my VERY long posts, haha. I want to remember all my emotions and all the wonderful things that I experienced.)

My first afternoon in Sendai, I had no plans but my heart was yearning to go to Yuzu’s home rink. I knew I would be going there the next day with a friend Ella, but I realised I couldn’t wait! This is the rink where Yuzu grew up, the rink that he loves, the rink that he donates all his royalties from his 2 autobiographies to (‘Aoi Hono’ 1 & 2). It was recently renovated (in the 2nd half of 2017) with ideas/suggestions from him and Shizuka Arakawa. So I found myself going to the tourist information centre in Sendai Station to get directions to Ice Rink Sendai. (The tourist info centre is awesome! Photo above. There is staff who speak very good English. I did not need to use my Japanese at all.)

There are 2 ways to get to the rink and I chose the 50-minute bus ride. I wanted to relax on the bus and see the neighbourhood and eat my ‘zunda mochi’ and ‘zunda pudding’ (Sendai specialty, sweet deserts made from edamame, bought from a shop in the station) (Yuzu ate zunda mochi in ‘Weekend Sendai’ photo shoot). It was a delicious and scenic ride.

Photo above: Nanakita River and Yurtec Stadium, home to J.League club Vegalta Sendai (and also to Vegatta-kun, the eagle mascot that loves Yuzu very much xD). Being in the Nanakita area means the rink is near!

After alighting at the right stop (I checked with the bus driver to be sure), I looked around wondering where the rink was.... then I saw this ‘Fun-te’ sign; Ice Rink Sendai’s name and logo is there too!

Turning right at the sign, soon I saw a familiar building.

I am here!!! The rink that I’ve seen in videos and photos, and read so much about! There was a banner hanging down one side: “Congratulations, Hanyu Yuzuru senshu, gold medal”.

After entering through the glass doors, I saw this beautiful sight.......

Along the left wall was a Yuzu-in-kimono standee and LOTS of messages on the wall. They were support messages to Yuzu written before PyeongChang Olympics. Many of them were written on specially made oval-shaped paper with the words “PyeongChang 2018 Olympics; Ganbare!! Hanyu-senshu!!” at the top of the paper. The photo below is a close-up of 2 such messages.

These two were written by members of Pandalion, the Sendai group that composed cheer songs for Yuzu for both Olympics. One message says ‘Forever supporting you!!’ and the other says ‘You are a phoenix!!’ (the kanji is literally: You are the bird that never dies!) I was so touched reading the messages. They were all written during the long silent period when Yuzu was recovering from injury. The people here kept on believing in him (and I’m so proud to say I did too).

Next to all the support messages was a whiteboard with Yuzu’s messages from past years. The first one has no date but I saw a photo of it a long time back. It says: ‘Even though we are apart, our hearts are one!! Everyone “forward”!! I will also work harder and become strong!’ (my translation) And he signs off with a little mushroom drawing next to his name. Reading it, I felt again how much he loves his hometown and how difficult it was for him to leave Sendai to train in Toronto. (His desire to become a better skater was so strong, he knew sacrifices had to be made.) The other 2 messages are from 2014 (thanking everyone for their support) and 2017 (congratulations on the 10th anniversary).

Further down this left wall was the entrance to a little exhibition gallery with photos and memorabilia of Shizuka Arakawa and Yuzuru. Photo-taking is not allowed in this part. But here are 3 photos from news sources (thanks to ElenaC):

The cutest thing was a pair of small, black skating boots with a name labeled on the blades, ‘はにゅうゆづる’ (’Hanyu Yuzuru’ in hiragana)..... could be his earliest pair of skates!

On the right side near the entrance is the ticket machine and the reception counter. You buy a 200-yen ticket if you want to enter the rink area to look around and watch people skate. If you want to rent a pair of skates and do some actual skating, you buy the 1700-yen ticket.

Straight ahead were glass panels and a set of glass doors that lead to the ice rink. There is a sign on the door saying photography is not allowed inside. The young lady at the reception counter explained that it is for protecting the privacy of the children skating there.

It was quiet and peaceful on this day of my 1st visit. In the reception/exhibition area, there were only 3 or 4 people slowly looking at the messages, photos and exhibits. After spending some time here, I bought a 200 yen ticket and entered the area where the rink is.

There were many skaters in the rink. The first things that caught my eyes were 2 big posters of Yuzu on the opposite side of the rink; they were the ‘Aoi Hono’ posters (Book 1 and 2).... wow..... so beautiful...... I walked around and then I sat down on one of the viewing benches to watch the skating. Most of the skaters were school children having skate lessons after school.

After a while, a lady who looked familiar entered the rink and started to coach a group of children. It was Nanami Abe-sensei!!!! Aww....... I felt so happy to see her! The coach who was with Yuzu in so many of his earlier videos, the coach who was in tears after his legendary R&J in Nice 2012, the great coach that I have read so much about...... my heart was just so moved to see her for real in person. She was in a longish black down jacket, with short cropped hair and black-framed specs.

She was coaching a group of children who looked about 12 years old to early teens (about 5 girls and 1 boy). I just sat there watching them, feeling very happy and contented.

After some time, I suddenly I heard Nanami-sensei saying in Japanese, “Photos are not allowed. Please do not take photos.” I realised that 2 ladies sitting on a bench near me were using their handphones to take photos. Oops..... maybe they forgot that it was not allowed in here. Nanami-sensei then came out of the ice rink and was now walking towards our benches! She went to the ladies and said politely but firmly, “Please delete the photos that you took.” They were not Japanese but Nanami-sensei just repeated herself until they understood. She stood there and watched them as they deleted the photos in their phones, and then she went back into the rink and continued with her class. Wow..... that was so cool!!! She is so cool!!! I sat there watching her with a HUGE amount of respect and feeling even more in awe of her! (And I couldn’t help feeling a little scared of her too, haha!)

I stayed there watching the skaters until it was closing time (6pm). Of course, I was tempted to skate as well. But I know I can’t skate to save my life and the ice is so hard..... I was afraid of falling and breaking something and not being able to go for Yuzu’s victory parade! I decided I would just have to come back here another day after the parade. :))

The next day was Saturday, ie. the day before the parade. My friend Ella had arrived in Sendai and I came to the rink with her. What a big difference today.... there was a long queue to go in! (The rink would be closed on parade day itself.) Pic below: I was waiting in line near the main entrance when I took this photo. The glass doors at the end lead to the ice rink. The banner hung above the doors says “PyeongChang Olympics 2018 figure skating Japan representative, Hanyu Yuzuru senshu, gold medal congratulations”.

Because it was crowded, we didn’t stay long. Ella had a good look at the whole place and we both knew we would come back again soon. So we headed to a very nice Starbucks nearby and relaxed there with our frappuccinos.

Next to it was a big bookshop with a poster of Yuzu’s book ‘Yume wo Ikiru’ prominently displayed outside. Of course, we went in for a while. :)

For the return journey in the afternoon, there were no buses that go to Sendai Station (they only run in the morning with a last bus at 1.35pm). It’s a short bus ride or a 20-min walk to the nearest station ‘Izumi Chuo Station’ and then take the subway. (Note: bus schedules may change according to month/season.)

Next day = Yuzu’s Parade Day = the hottest day ever recorded for April in Sendai. After the parade, the next few days were grey and rainy. I was so grateful thinking back to parade day...... thank God it was hot and sunny! (link to my parade day post is at the bottom of this post) With the parade over, it was safe to do some ice skating! So one rainy day, I went back to Ice Rink Sendai.

My initial plan was to take a walk around the Nanakita area, have a look at Nanakita Elementary School (that Yuzu attended) and Nanakita Park (where Yuzu sat on a bench in ‘Weekend Sendai’ mag), and then head to the rink. But it was not good weather for being outdoors. I decided to go to the rink first; maybe the rain would stop later and I could go to the park and the school after skating.

In Ice Rink Sendai, the staff at the reception counter were the same ladies that I saw on the other 2 days, and one of them remembered me from my previous visits! haha, that made me so happy! :D

I handed them 2 postcards for Yuzu, one written on behalf of the FB International Fan Group and one from myself. The staff said they would pass them to him. :) Then one of them helped me with the purchase at the ticket machine; I paid 300 yen for a pair of plain grey gloves (mascot Irene gloves were out of stock but it’s ok cos I do have a pair at home) and 1700 yen for skating and rental of skates. I asked her “how many hours”, I thought it would be for 2 or 3 hours, but she said, “Until closing time.” Oh wow! You mean I can skate here the whole day??? Glad the rain made me come here earlier than planned!

Then she asked me if I wanted a ‘point card’ even though I may not be able to use it -- you get a stamp for each session, and 5 stamps will give you one free session. I had told her on my first visit that I don’t live in Japan and I came because of the parade, so she knew it would be hard for me to make use of it (card expires in one year). It was so nice of her to offer me one.... I told her I would keep it as a souvenir. How I wish I could skate here 5 times a year!

I entered the area of the rink. It was so quiet! There were only 3 adults skating as most children were still in school; their lessons would start later in the afternoon. For now, it felt like I had the whole rink to myself! I went to the rental skates counter and the staff helped me to get the right size of skate boots.

Then, one thing really, really surprised me. The staff actually asked a coach to look after me for a while! A female coach with a very kind and sweet face came to me as I was wearing my skates and said she would give me some guidance. Wow..... what a kind gesture from them!!! I was so touched! Thank you, staff-san and sensei!!!

Sensei showed me how to get onto the ice safely and how to move forward and how not to fall. We went very slowly round the rink together as I practised what she showed me. At first, I was very nervous and afraid of falling.... I know how painful it is! Then I started to get more comfortable on the ice and more confident, thanks to her instructions. And I love the ice!!! It was very dry throughout and very nice to skate on. I moved slowly around the rink, with Sensei patiently skating next to me.

Sensei was so warm and friendly, and chatted to me as we skated. (Once again, I felt very thankful that my Japanese is good enough for a decent conversation.) She said she loves skating and she has been teaching here for many years. I told her that I have been a Yuzu-fan since Sochi Olympics and I had come to Sendai for the victory parade and I really wanted to visit his home rink. So here I was! She was very happy to hear that and thanked me for coming. Then she told me that she was already coaching here when Yuzu was a little boy and he was so cute with his mushroom hair! Oh WOW!!!!! I am skating with someone who knew him as a kid!!! I felt so privileged to have her company! We started to talk about how great he is, not only as a skater, but as a person as well. It was very obvious that Sensei is extremely proud of him. :) She also told me some funny anecdotes. She said that among the little kids that she teaches now, the boys say, “When I grow up, I want to be Hanyu-kun.” And the girls say, “When I grow up, I want to marry Hanyu-kun.” Hahaha....... SO CUTE!!!!!

As my ‘lesson’ progressed, children and teens started to arrive at the rink for their lessons. As we continued to skate slowly round the rink, students would skate up to greet Sensei. She responded to each one with a gentle nod and a smile. These were all her former students, she told me. What lovely students, I thought. So well-mannered and respectful...... just like a guy I know. Ci

Then Sensei said it was time for her to get ready for her lesson with some children, so she would leave me to practice on my own. I thanked her profusely for her kindness and she replied that she really enjoyed teaching me. :D

Before she went off, she made sure I was ok. Told me that if I feel cold, there is a ‘warm room’ where I can enter with my skates and sit for a while. If I am hungry, there is a lounge where I can get food and have a rest, but no skates allowed there so I need to change back into my normal shoes for that room. She also said there are a lot of Yuzu’s books and magazines there so I should go and take a look!!! haha.... Sensei really understands the heart of a fan! Ice-resurfacing was going to start at 3pm; no skating for 30 minutes, perfect time to head to the lounge!

The lounge is a very comfortable place with neat rows of tables and chairs. And there are really a lot of Yuzu’s books and magazines there! Nicely displayed on a few low shelves that encircle a cosy sitting area further inside.

I CAN STAY HERE ALL DAY........

There were vending machines selling drinks and hot food. I got a box of ‘yaki onigiri’ (grilled rice balls which I love), selected a few mags and sat by the huge glass windows that look out towards the rink. “Itadakimasu!”

What a perfect meal.

Soon, the zamboni had done its job and the skaters were out on the ice again. I found it so hard to leave the lounge..... I wanted to look through ALL the magazines first! But the rink closes at 6pm..... there was not much time left to skate. So after spending a bit more time on the mags, I tore myself away and went back outside to put on my skates.

Now there were several coaches on the ice and different classes were going on. I waved to Sensei who was teaching a tiny little boy..... awww Yuzu must have been like that when he started..... And then, I saw Nanami-sensei again! She came into the rink and started to coach a group of older children. I continued to skate slowly round and round the rink, trying my best NOT to stare and to concentrate on my own practice. I admire her so much as a coach and choreographer that I couldn’t help feeling excited to be skating near her. xD

The older children were practising jumps and spins. There were also a few adults skating. Everyone was so good and I must have stuck out like a sore thumb. But surprisingly, I was not embarrassed nor self-conscious. I think I must have been too overwhelmed with happiness to feel anything else. :D

Too soon, it was closing time. I returned my skates and thanked the staff for their help and kindness. I went outside and saw that it was still raining!!! And I had totally forgotten about checking the weather and trying to go to Nanakita-koen, haha!

I was putting up the hood of my parka when I heard someone call my name. It was the coach who had taught me..... Sensei! She asked me where I was going and I told her I was going to take the bus and then the subway to Yaotome Station. ‘Rikyu’, a restaurant near there has very delicious grilled liver and beef tongue, and also Yuzu’s signature, haha. And then, I got another HUGE surprise of the day.... she said she could send me there in her car!!! I quickly declined her offer, gosh how could I trouble her! But she assured me that the restaurant was on her way. She also said it was getting dark very quickly because of the rainy weather and she would worry about me trying to look for it in the dark. And again insisted it was no trouble for her as she was going that way. Awww...... Sensei, you’re too kind for words!!! I asked her to join me for dinner but she said she had to run some errands, so she couldn’t. We went to her car which was parked in the huge parking area outside Ice Rink Sendai and I had a very quick and comfortable journey to the restaurant. Sensei, domo arigato gozaimashita!!!

What a rainy day.... but oh how grateful I am for it! It made me spend the whole afternoon at Yuzu’s home rink and I experienced the immense warmth and kindness of the people there! Thank you, Ice Rink Sendai! Thank you, Sensei!

10 Things to See and Do in Girona, Spain

From lively Barcelona to island paradises like Mallorca and the Grand Canaries to the historic cities of Andalusia, Spain is awesome. It’s one of my favorite countries in the world and one of the most budget friendly in Europe.

But there is one city that captures my love of the country the most: Girona.

Home to just over 100,000 people and only 45 minutes from Barcelona, Girona is home to a well-preserved Jewish quarter, ancient winding streets, and a walkable medieval city wall. Throw in lots of green space, colorful buildings, and perfect weather, Girona is one of my favorite places in Spain.

Girona is more famous today thanks to Game of Thrones being filmed there but this tiny city only 30 minutes from Barcelona remains somewhat off the beaten track and free of the crowds that make Barcelona unbearable sometimes. There’s good food, lots to do, and lovely people. I can’t sing the city’s praises enough.

To help you make the most of your trip, here are my top things to see and do in Girona:

1. Explore the Old Quarter

Girona’s Old Quarter (Barri Vell) sits beside the River Onyar. This neighborhood is home to some of Girona’s most popular and well-preserved historical sites. Filled with medieval architecture, colorful old homes, and picturesque bridges but without the crowds of Barcelona, this is my favorite area to wander around.

You can explore it yourself and enjoy getting lost, but before also check out the tours Girona Walks offers, so you can learn more about this section of town and how it has evolved over the centuries.

2. Marvel at the Cathedral of Girona

Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona towers over the city. It’s the second widest church in the world, almost 23m (75 feet) across — only St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican is wider. (It was also featured in Game of Thrones!)

The interior isn’t particularly ornate and has a bit of an austere feel to it, but it’s peaceful, and there’s a lot of information and a good audio guide available.

3. Tour the Arab Baths

These preserved public baths were built in 1194. Their Romanesque style was inspired by similar Roman and Arab baths and was built in response to ancient Girona’s growing population and the need to improve hygiene.

While you can’t actually use the baths, you can take a self-guided tour to see what bathing was like in the Middle Ages. The building is covered by a large vaulted ceiling and includes a cold-water bath, a hot-water bath, and changing rooms.

4. Stroll Along the Eiffel Bridge

The Palanques Vermelles Bridge, also known as the Eiffel Bridge, was built in 1827 by Gustave Eiffel just before the construction of his most famous work, the Eiffel Tower. Located over the Onyar River, it’s a great place to get some pics of the Old Town’s colorful buildings. I try to cross this bridge often, simply because the view is so nice!

5. Learn Something New at One of Girona’s Many Museums

For a small city, Girona is home to quite a few museums and art galleries. Here some I think you shouldn’t miss:

The Jewish History Museum – The museum is made up of 11 exhibitions that explore the history and culture of the region’s Jewish community, which was one of the biggest in the area. Admission is 4 EUR ($4.40 USD).

Girona’s Art Museum – This has the region’s largest collection of Romanesque and Gothic art (over 8,000 items). It’s huge! Admission is 6 EUR ($6.60 USD).

The Cinema Museum – This museum covers the history of cinema and is filled with old posters, films, and movie equipment. It also hosts regular events and movie screenings. A must for movie buffs! Admission is 5 EUR ($5.50 USD).

The Girona Archaeology Museum – This is one of the oldest museums in the region and boasts a collection of archeological finds from pre-history all the way to the Middle Ages. Though small, it goes into some good detail about the area. Admission is 6 EUR ($6.60 USD).

6. Tour the Basilica de Sant Feliu

This historic Gothic cathedral is eye-catching and hard to miss. It almost looks like a castle. Its bell tower is visible from most spots around Girona, so it’s never far from view.

It was the first cathedral in Girona and remained the only one until the 10th century. Beyond the impressive architecture, the cathedral is home to historic works of art, including a 14th-century sculpture of Christ, as well as Christian and non-Christian sarcophagi that date back to the fourth century.

7. Visit the Monastery of Saint Daniel

Founded in the 11th century, this monastery located on the outskirts of town was created with the intention of establishing a nunnery in the region. While the abbey is no longer in use, you can still visit the church and the cloister. Inside, you’ll find Saint Daniel’s sepulcher, rumored to house the remains of the saint himself. The architecture is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic, with additions from the 12th and 15th centuries.

The monastery is surrounded by the Valley of Sant Daniel, a lush green space with lots of shade and picturesque natural springs.

8. Walk Atop Girona’s Ancient City Wall

Dating to Girona’s medieval past, these ancient walls were partially destroyed in the 1800s to make way for city expansion. Fortunately, many of the missing pieces have been recovered or reconstructed in recent times. Taking a stroll atop them offers an unbeatable view of both the city and the countryside’s rolling hills. Plus, they’re free!

9. Stroll La Rambla de la Llibertat

Lined by gorgeous neoclassical, baroque, and Gothic buildings, this is the main pedestrian street in town. The street dates back to 1885 and is full of shops, cafés, and restaurants. There’s also a flower market on Saturdays.

10. Indulge at Rocambolesc

This is one of the best gelaterias I’ve ever been to! Owned by world-class chef Jordi Roca, it’s a great spot to (over)indulge in delicious ice cream and gelato topped with berries, cotton candy, fruits, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, fudge, and so much more. I go there every time I visit (usually multiple times). It’s amazing and worth every euro!

Girona’s long history, a unique and rich culture, so much delicious food, and stunning architecture. A lot of people make it a day trip from Barcelona but I’d recommend spending at least one night here. There’s plenty to keep you busy. You took a few steps to see what was inside.

You turned back to look at sehun with teary eyes.You didn't have time to realise that you were crying.

For the first time in your life,you were crying because you were happy, thankful and because this man cared about you so much that he gave you everything he could.

You covered your mouth.You didn't want to sob in front of him.He looked at you with adoration and love.You walked over to him and stood there for a few moments before slowly hugging him.

“T-thank you...” you said with a low voice.

“You deserve it.” he said patting your hair.

You were truly happy at that moment.You felt like all the years of education and hardships faded away.He made you happy, you felt loved, you felt treasured.You didn't need anything or anyone else.He was enough to make you feel like you were cared and loved.You loved him.

He felt tears in the corners of his eyes.He was crying.Did he even cry after his parent’s funeral?He was really depressed after that so he started to go on gallery openings to keep himself busy but now, he had you.Someone he loved and could care about.

He went to the kitchen without saying anything and soon, he was standing in front of you with a bottle of wine.You didn't have a drink with him before so it was the first time you were alone, celebrating.

He slowly opened the wine and poured some for both of you while you just there and watched him.When you realised you stared at him way too much, you blushed and immediately picked the glass of wine.

“To...” he said waiting for you to complete his sentence.

“Us” you said smiling before you made your toast.

You were having the time of your life for the past 3 hours.Sehun took you to a fancy restaurant and you talked about anything and everything.He knew you didn't like fancy stuff so after you talked and laughed for about an hour, he took you to a arcade room.

It wasn't normal at all.You were wearing a fancy dress and he had an expensive suit on, it was your date night but it didn't matter to both of you.You weren't normal in fact.

You two didn't always look like couple because,a man like sehun always appeared with a fancy model girl on his side but this time it was you.A university student with a cold attitude.

After you made sure you played all the games and sehun won a plushie for you, you whispered at his ear, telling him that you wanted to leave soon.He nodded after taking his jacket on his hand and walking away with you.You got into the car and opened one of your favourite tracks.After 10 minutes,sehun slowly put the volume down, meaning he wanted to talk.

“You had fun, miss?” he asked looking at you after returning his gaze back to the road.

“Yea..” you said smiling at him.

You slowly caressed his hair.

“I love you”

What brushes do you use in fire alpaca?? i dont do much in firealpaca (esp not lately lol) but when i did use it a lot i just used the fill bucket and the standard/default brush to fill in gaps n such lol! i dont really draw in it, i used flash/adobe animate for the lineart and just fill in color in firealpaca :3

when did you start animating? uhh when i was around 11 or 12 when i started digital art i guess? i just used photoshop for the longest time then got flash when i was like 15 or so

USE REFERENCES!!! draw …from ur soul…what makes u ..FEEL good

how do you make that burn effect on your lineart? it makes it your pieces look sharper and even more interesting, it’s super cool!! when i used to use flash for lineart and firealpaca for coloring a lot, setting the lineart layer on BURN with the coloring layer seeping a lil past the lineart would get this effect automatically

(like on the whiskers. u can see it gets a brighter brown(?) and the warmer yellow on the ears)

but since then i’ve been using sai+photoshop more so i just do it manually! i’ll use this funny pic of me and my cat as an example lol

^i select the lineart/everything i want the funky color around

^slam that INCREMENT button a couple times

^make a new layer under the lineart

^fill that puppo with ur preferred color! something brighter works best, or even straight up white

that’ll give you something like this

then i open it in photoshop

and i mess with the pink line layer’s blending mode..color burn usually does the trick but depending on the Look you’re going for, saturation, multiply and overlay have some similar effects that look cool.

i also usually get rid of the outermost edge of pink line that’s visible around the lineart, just so it looks a little cleaner? to do that you just select around your lineart, increment/expand selection, and delete/erase in the selection of the pink line layer

uhh yeah! lmk if anyone needs clarification on this, i have some other #TIPS on makin ur art look crusty and funky so…lemme know if you’re interested :—3

What do you use to animate? And, a more specific question, how do you make transparent animated gifs? adobe animate 2017! (previously flash) i export my animation from flash as a png sequence then open it in photoshop, where the background will be transparent and save it as a gif from there nyaaa

Like, when you draw shapes for a certain character, it looks rlly like it fits with the character’s personality n stuff!! ( e.g: Your Love Live! drawings!! The characters look so good in your style.) I’ve always admired how u did that n was hoping for some tips maybe?? Anyways, have a good day!!💛💖💟💜💝💞💖 HOOGA!! TYSM!!! and YEA you basically guessed it, i mainly just think about the character’s personality and translate that into a shape or Pheeling…

especially for anime characters i look at the Very Subtle differences in the character’s original design..or possibly canon implications…for example kotori has slightly different eyes (it also says on her wiki page she has soft droopy eyes!) so i make sure to incorporate that Detãile

anime wiki pages that have details like that is nice, for love live they have cute lil “charm points” which is really cool n helpful! listening to how a character is described in their world can give clues to what differentiates them which you can make more clear in your design

taking into account each characters context is good too, what they do/hobby/personality and how that could affect their appearance/posture/attitude

YEAH its really fun to figure out certain characteristics and make it evident in their appearance! or. idk thats just what i do lol. hopefully this helps!

Recap and review of Los Cabos summer getaway trip

Welcome to my space!

First of all, if you follow my blog and social media posts, you are well aware of the fact that I have a recent high school graduate. So,this past week I took my daughter, the graduate, on her senior trip. We went to Cabo! It was both our first time visiting Cabo. Along with that, I am providing a Recap and review of Los Cabos summer getaway trip.

Pre-travel

We booked our travel through Costco travel and stayed at the Grand Fiesta Americana in Los Cabos. I must stay, the process was super easy, with so many options. The one thing I was not happy about was the fact that there no options for a non-stop flights in the trip we chose. This is not a sponsored post, so you get an honest review!

Nevertheless, I decided to use the Costco travel service, because I figured they would have contracts with reputable resorts and services, especially since it was our first time in Cabo. Generally, I can’t say I regret that decision.

Need to know…

Because we had no preplanned itinerary so we wear an easy target for the timeshare marketers at the airport. Which is one thing I did not know about…so beware. On the other hand, it’s not a bad thing if you’re interested in purchasing a time share, or just want the freebies that are offered, if you listen to their presentation. We got two bottle of tequila, a certificate for horseback riding, an explore Cabo tour, and a ride in the glass bottom boat…all almost a $700 deal….WIN!

Moving on. we were picked up at the airport by a pre arranged transportation service, part of the all inclusive service through Costco travels, and we arrived at the hotel around 4pm. The view from our room was unbelievable…we had an oceanfront view. Also, we had a daily $50 room credit we could apply to a number of features like spa, drinks, room upgrade, and cabana rental, but not at the Fine Argentinian restaurant.

Being that we were tired, we spent the evening indoors, after having some taco at the La Taqueria restaurant in the resort grounds, and retired for the day. The room was spacious, and modest, with sitting area on the balcony.

First, to start off, we had a delicious taco dinner here on our first night

Day 2

The next day was all about the beach! We spent all day at the beach after sleeping in. My daughter loved feeding the fish, played in the water a bit and then had lunch at the restaurant by the lake. We opted not to lay on the beach, even though we had a room credit to cover part of the cost for a cabana rental. We opted to use the credit instead, for our spa day, where we got a 90min outdoor massage, spent time in the sauna and hot room, then retired for the day.

Significantly, I used the solid wrap to break the floral pattern. That’s actually my scarf I have also previously used as a head wrap…versatility rules!

Day 3

On day three, we spent part of the day listening to a marketing presentation at Pueblo Bonito resort for timeshare, or as he called it…”fractional ownership” of a vacation slot. We returned to the hotel to get ready for the horseback ridding excursion. The ranch owners were very nice. Although we had a free ticked from the timeshare presentation, it only covered rides through the desert, so we had to pay $5 for change to ride to the beach, playa Medano, and take pis, before riding through the desert.

P.S. Take plenty of $1, $5 bills and Pesos to use for tips!

Although it was our first time on horse back, my daughter was amazingly confident, while I was terrified at first, but got better. I have to say though, I wish the saddle was more padded, cos I felt like I was sitting on a bed of rocks, and was even more pronounced when the she tried to gallop along. I quickly learned to slow her down…ijs. Also, my horse, Pinta, seemed to be super hungry, or just loved to eat. She stopped at every brush to take a bite.

One more thing, I was thankful we didn’t end up in the filthy water we had to cross, since of of the horses decide to just sit down in the middle of the trail, and sent her rider falling. No injury, thank God! I’m pretty sure they get tired of the trip routine. The horse owners also had a ranch chihuahua dog that followed us the entire trip, wadding through the water like it was nothin…Ha!

Day 4

Day #4 was our Explore Cabo tour day. The transportation service picked us up, first thing in the morning at he hotel lobby. We started at the Marina, rode to the Arco in the glass bottom boat, and back. Then we visited a glass making factory, tequila Making simulation Factory where we learned about the history of tequila making, and had tequila tasting. Then, on to the market place, the town square and church, then some lunch at ….. I have to say, the guide was super knowledgeable about the town, and history.

Furthermore, we ended up at the beach again, that evening. I posted an IGTV post you can check out here. Consequently, we had a fun time frolicking in the waves…as much as I am scared of large bodies of water, I still had a good time.

Meanwhile, we dined at the Artgentinial restaurant on our last night. I had the steak, which was super tasty, while my daughter played it safe with chicken…Ha!

Certainly, I am not a fan of rare steak, so they had to fire it up a bit more for me…still juicy tho. However, the mashed potatoes was something else!

DISCLAIMER & BACKSTORY: There are other avatar creators out there, I have blog posts, articles, and resource web pages that go over more than 15 of them - but Bitmoji is FREE and is, by far, the easiest one to start with. I also have to assure you, I don’t work for them, this is not sponsored or a “paid advertisement,” nor do they even acknowledge my positive Tweets or social media love, though I wouldn’t be mad at them if they sent me a T-Shirt! I used Bitstrips back in the day, and Bitmoji was created by them. A couple years ago one of my amazing MHMS Social Studies teachers, Ms. Daniller had her Bitmoji as her Twitter profile pic and I was all like "OMGosh, where did you get that!?".....she graciously shared, and well, now

1- Begin Bitmoji With Bitmoji you can create your face, hairstyle, shape, and then dress it up, & BOOM! They're automatically put into fun cartoon stickers that are an alternate emoji keyboard on your cell phone, Chrome extension, Snapchat, and more! Even my 70 something year old Mom and Dad have them, and we use them with each other all the time. It's hilarious and a blast! Though I gotta warn you, they’re a bit addictive! Sweet Setup:

Get the FREE App by searching for Bitmoji - available in iOS iPhone and Android. Download, open the app, start designing your avatar. Don’t worry, you can easily and always change it later. First you need to choose a cartoon style: either the more anime or squished Bitmoji style or the regular cartoony Bitstrips style. You can play around with skin tones, eye colors, eyebrows, hair color and style, body shapes and even outfit styles. Keep choosing and testing until your digital doppelganger looks just like you. Once you finish, Bitmoji will automatically create an entire library of fun — and just a tad bit silly — images. Like this one of me: Add the Keyboard & Give Full Access To use these Bitmjoji's you have to add them as an additional keyboard on your phone. For an iPhone go to General Settings > Keyboards > Add new keyboard and make sure you select ALLOW FULL ACCESS, this way you can use them on your iPad's, too. For Android, Wikihow says: “Enabling the Bitmoji Keyboard. Open your Android's Settings. It's the gray gear icon in the app drawer. Scroll down and tap Language and Input. It's in the

“Personal” section. Tap Current Keyboard. Tap Choose Keyboards. Slide the “Bitmoji Keyboard” switch to the On position. Tap OK.” While you’re texting, there are 6 categories of Bitmoji's, you select them by just touching, copying, and pasting into the text message box. To take them from the app and to send them into your computer, you can save them to your Camera Roll, upload to Flickr, email them to yourself, or the easiest way is to insert it into a Google Doc then take a screenshot, that way you can easily edit them in Photoshop or FREE with PicMonkey. 2 - Savvy Signage Once you have your Bitmoji on your computer you can make signage for your classroom or library. Think of Back to School Night signs and a classroom door welcome sign with your room number and name, or a “Place Homework Here” sign, the possibilities are endless. I created the sign here by adding the text using PicMonkey, a FREE site with creative tools for photo editing and graphic design.

Classroom do’s and don’ts signs can be so boring, Bitmoji’s really jazz them up! My friend Andrew Tyler aka @atylerlibrarian in New Hampshire, created really a neat Computer Lab sign featuring Bitmoji’s for his school! (Picture found here in many sizes) Andrew also shared on Twitter how he created a fantastic photo booth sign for his Middle School Library for Grandparents Day!

3- Fresh Feedback

Bitmoji is now available as a Chrome extension that puts your cartoon avatar stickers super handy on your browser toolbar to use within Google Apps for Education, Gmail, Seesaw, and a growing list of other platforms. Getting feedback from teachers, in cartoon form, makes that feedback fun and much more personal. Super educator, speaker, blogger, and author Alice Keeler, says about Bitmoji’s: “When using digital tools try to put yourself into them to help students feel there is a teacher guiding them through the lesson. Bitmoji’s are great for adding “you” along with some personality into digital resources. Google Forms are awesome for flipped learning, formative assessment, checks for understanding, and so much more. Mr. Parkinson aka @ICT_MrP, a Primary ICT teacher in Britain, uses Bitmoji stickers in a rubric for writing prompts. What a great way to give kids a visual feedback for their assignments. Anything we can do to make Rubrics more approachable and useful the better!

4 - Social Sharing

Bitmoji avatars are super for sharing on social media. Whether it’s as your Twitter profile picture, on a blog, in Snapchat stories, or on Instagram - these cartoons really bring personality to any platform. One of the coolest ideas I’ve heard lately was from Tara M. Martin aka @TaraMartinEDU called #BookSnaps. Tara shares how she takes a picture of a section of text, uploads it to Snapchat, adds a filter, re-types the quote from the book, draws arrows, writes words, and then brings in a Bitmoji to add more zip. This is a cool way for the reader to express their connections to text with a digital visual representation. Search #BookSnaps for articles, directions, blog posts, and videos on how to join in on the fun. But since I don't want to "friend" my kiddos on Snapchat (because, boundaries and I teach Middle School) I could see how you can do this same thing can be done using Instagram. You could also create these with Google Docs!

5- Cool Communication Leveraging the power of the FREE Chrome extension puts your Bitmoji right in your browser toolbar for easy use with Gmail and Drive. Linda Lindsay aka @mauilibrarian2, a super Teacher-Librarian in Hawaii says: “If I had my druthers, I would use my Bitmoji all the time! So I have to restrain myself. My favorite use is in Gmail (Chrome extension) to punctuate my ideas and responses to make my colleagues laugh. They're always pleased, and it makes me so happy imagining the looks on their faces.” Our wonderful school data clerk Kimberly Walley (who has since moved schools - miss her! She the one saved teachers when our Synergy electronic gradebook went wonky or changes - she used it to transform a possibly boring newsletter to bright when directions or updates are shared with the school staff. See her graphic above! Caution: For Grownups Only! I have to warn you that Bitmoji’s are to use FOR kiddos and not to use WITH the kiddos. This is because some of the stickers or cartoons have to do with drinking alcohol, some have trendy bad-ish language (FML), and some are sorta flirty. Not R rated, maybe not even PG-13, but just not for kiddos in my humble opinion. Since I teach Middle Schoolers, this is right-out. Sure, some of my kiddos might have their own Bitmoji, but I’m not going to be the teacher to promote their direct use. This is for your professional classroom branding and fun.

Why Bitmoji? Emojis have become necessary in recent years because they fill a gap people didn't even know they had. When texting, they add feeling to conversations and allow you to tell if someone is being sarcastic or sweet. Bimoji’s give those conversations identity and personality. Maximizing that super power of a customized and engaging cartoon and using it in your professional practice brings it to the next level.
