Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? i tend to generally write characters in my wheelhouse, though i think i have deviations now and again lmao. like, who would think i'd write shigure, right? but, mostly cheerful characters, i think. mood-makers, the kind of people who would set a scene, but also be enough of a backseat player to the driving force where any protagonist or antagonist would take up the reins more comfortably? i think they tend to get written off as genki or filler characters, so i like kind of prodding at their insecurities and seeing what makes them tick instead.

What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? lmao, lbr i'm made for the clown show. nonsensical moments, increasingly strange meet and greets? but, i like doing big establishing moments that suspend what you know about my characters at face value to explore what's deeper in there. i'll slowburn friendship, idgaf; that's my shit.

Favorite TOA-related memory: lel, team justice is still a highlight in my memory from l&k, but i also remember this very specific combat sequence i wrote with rai in the first major lore event with felix and cynthia that was sick as hell to do! ....... also, probably every piemageddon. it is funny seeing even the serious characters fear for their lives / get uber maniacal in a ridiculous situation.

Minerva and magic travel on seperate binaries: it is true, she had fun in the arena, experimenting a way of battling that doesn't belong to her, but as a matter of fact, she is kind of repellent to magic.

It's not that she doesn't like it, but she simply cannot understand how it work and how she can actually use it. Yet, since she transferred at the Monastery, she grew fond of dark magic and she wants to learn more about it;it all started while she observed a lesson and after that moment, she felt fascinated and she understood that she could actually make a ood use of magic too.

Obviously she prefers weapons and more concrete items, but tomes and staff will certainly be part of her training, in the future.

Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? most common ones are probably the Sad Sack Sages ( hi etzel, sety ), fiery boys with hearts of gold ( felix, leif ), and dark paladins ( nel, felix ). i also really like chaotic neutral trickster types, but aren't usually confident enough in my ability to write for them haha

What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? action scenes for sure. any scene where there's external momentum driving things forward and giving a sense of momentum and urgency. also just anything that lets me worldbuild or exploring facets of worldbuilding hehe

Favorite TOA-related memory: that's a hard one. probably the final week of arcadia, our first lore event. all the teams ended up in boss battles, but they weren't the guaranteed staple of lore event endings like they are now. it just kind of happened because that's where the stories ended up. the collaborative scene-building and sense of camaraderie in the fights against gricenchos and gofannon are still unmatched for me to this day. they felt like dynamic scenes right out of a lord of the rings movie

The tireless hewing of Revanche and his occasional grunt occupied the silence in place of any words. Scattered around Rafal's feet were glittering red flakes that slept in the dust, broken off from a larger body. The slightest hint of wind roused and gusted them away. Thankful for the cool breeze, he paused to wipe the sweat collecting above his brow then continued his dutiful work, stopping neither for exhaustion nor for thirst. Only to assess the angle of his cuts and neatly envision the four quandaries he'd mapped out by sight.

His work had to be precise; it needed to be close to perfect.

For this there would only be a single try.

Their gift only came once. Seven emblems who had given substance to his deepest wish in the form of a dragonstone, larger and more potent than any other. With it he could transform into the strongest of them all; a diamond hard hide unable to be pierced, blistering breath that could shave mountains down to hills. Just like Father, a Great Fell Dragon. A paragon of strength so unfair it would have made all the Fell Children in history weep with envy. . .and it wasn't what he wanted anymore.

It was Nel he thought of. Nel's future he wanted to preserve. Refuge in the Somniel of another world would not be enough. That was merely the minimum. A dragon who could not transform was no dragon at all, Rafal knew that- he had known that, lamented that, and his world paid the price. To him, these actions were clearer and more justified than anything. A return, even, for what Nel surrendered to save a brother who didn't deserve it.

And one more hack of the axe did the deed.

He stepped back proudly as the pieces fell into place. Or fell apart. The mother of all dragonstones fashioned into four smaller variants to the best of his ability. Rife with gritty edges here and there, a need for bandaging in order to support the shape- but otherwise serviceable. He smirked at his handiwork- a thing of creation- and dusted off his sore hands.

Once again, a mission separates them - and having not forgotten what happened last time, Leonardo cannot help but find himself unsettled. Before the ships depart, he makes sure to track down his best friend for one final farewell.

"Edward."

He does not have to explain, and he knows that. Without saying anything more at first, he pulls him into a hug. Just for a moment - just to enjoy the feeling of his breath and heartbeat for a little longer.

"I'm sure you know what I'm going to say here," he sighs, pulling away to look him in the eyes, doing his best to smile in spite of everything. "Be careful, don't die, come back safe. All that. Alright?"

From his satchel, he produces a small, neatly wrapped package and hands it to Edward. A medicinal kit, small but handy, in the perfect size for one of the other's spare pockets.

"I'm sure you'll have healers on board, but this is for emergencies. This salve here helps stop bleeding almost on the spot. Doesn't even sting too much when you apply it, it's great. I stocked up a while ago. And some bandages, of course. I hope you won't need it... but you know how those situations usually go."

He clasps Edward's hands in his own one last time, giving him a decisive nod.

"Good luck out there. I'll... of course try to stay safe myself, too."

"Leonar—?"

He's cut off — There's just too many syllables in the other's name for him not to be, and this is a preferable greeting, anyways. Edward huffs out a little chuckle into Leonardo's shoulder, and presses his own face further into it, arms crawling up to pull him closer — There, under his skin, the thrum of his pulse, the rise and fall of each draw of breath. Proof of life, so much warmer and so much more real than that nebulous dream months ago. Long enough that details almost elude him; But he still has a bloodstained shirt and a broken good-luck charm back in his room to say otherwise.

He holds reality close a moment longer, before letting Leonardo go. "Yeah, yeah," he says, rolling his eyes good-naturedly. "Right back at you, by the way — What's this?"

He takes the little parcel, pries a bit of it open to peek as his friend explains. "Ohhh! Yeah, this looks real handy." He slips it into his pocket to judge its size, finds with glee that it really is a cute little thing, twisting a little to demonstrate. "Look! Perfect fit!"

And — Ah, palm to palm, holding fast with a bit too much finality for his tastes. That won't do. While not eager to let go again, he's still got something to...

"Wait," he's rifling in another pocket now, "Hold on... Did I bring it... There!"

He pulls out a little drawstring bag by the string with extra gusto, catches it deftly when it pops out, pressing it into Leonardo's hands with both of his own, holding them fast like seconds ago. "For you! Trail mix, like how we did it back home! I still had some dried berries and apple chips... No fruit on the sea, after all." His grin turns a little impish. "Can't have all your teeth falling out like a real pirate, heh!"

And his smile softens again, reassuringly, full of trust and confidence. "Hey. I will be, and I know you'll be, too. You're my best friend in the world."

bravest is certainly an interesting question i think because i don't think they would ever describe themself as brave in any serious manner; they don't actually think very highly of themself & their actions, regardless of what they say. personally, i think yuri is at their bravest when it comes to protecting people they care about.

to answer the actual question though, i'll go with the moment he decides not to kill bernadetta because i think it's the first time he's ever had to choose between himself and someone else. he chooses bernadetta's life— and proceeds to immediately pay for it.

like, yuri knows it's bad. he's literally been caught red-handed trying to murder a noble house's heir. whatever's going to happen to him now, it's not going to be pretty. they're probably going to kill him, and if they don't, then whoever hired him in the first place will be happy to do so instead, if only to keep him quiet. he might as well take her with him.

i'm sure he thought about it too. wondered if he would finally find the resolve to actually kill her. and i'm sure he found that he couldn't do it anyway.

yuri didn't plan to spare bernadetta, the same way he never planned to kill those people from the church. both were decisions made in the moment, when the lives of people he cared for were suddenly threatened. when yuri turns his brain off for a moment and acts on emotion rather than plain reason, then he is brave. the bravest he'll ever be in his life, probably.

but these moments don't make them more courageous. if anything, they just make them more cautious. because it's dangerous to think that way. yuri doesn't trust things they can't guarantee the outcome of. it'll get them and the people they care for killed. but as constance says,

and even if they would never consider themself as ‘brave,’ they'll do anything for the people they care for.

That’s a tough question, but one situation she had to accomplish even though she was damn scared, it was the ceremony after her mother passed away: she still not recognized fully the disappearance of her beloved mother, but she kind of worked out the grief for that immense loss.

The ceremony itself wasn’t really long and pompous: the family members knew that Mikoto wasn’t the type of person who liked ostentatious commemoration and following that thought, Ryoma decided to hold a private function, delegating all the sacred and religious responsibility to Sakura. Here’s come the scary part: she was utterly not ready for this, she didn’t want to organized such important task all by herself and she was at total loss when her older brother asked her this favour –but how could she refuse something like this? How could she reject the love of her mother, one last time? It was true, working on that commemoration would certainly grow stronger the bond between Sakura and her mother, and despite all the scary thoughts that came to her mind, she eventually accomplished her duty, knowing it was the right thing to do – besides the fact that it was a special way to say goodbye to her mother, she couldn’t refuse and be scared: her mother would be there for her and she would always be there for her, whenever she needed her presence and love.

Or, well, giant bird-men. Though he isn't all that giant when she really looks. Flustered, the princess ducks into an apologetic curtsey.

"Please, there's no need to apologize. I should have been paying more attention myself."

Had he not accepted the blame so willingly, she would have been more than willing to take it all herself. It's too beautiful a night, the gardens so still in the moon's light. All the more perfect a place to let ones mind drift away from the world in front of them.

"Oh!" The jingle of his offering steals her attention, a sheepish smile warming her expression to mirror his own. Deft fingers undo another from her little arrangement of them, quiet laughter joining their chimes.

To Merric's answer, she can but giggle, diving back into her pack with utmost enthusiasm. When she reemerges, it is with a flask and a bundle of sandwiches, which she naturally divides among the three of them.

"They're ham and cheese," she explains as she lays out the sandwiches and opens the flask. "It just seems right for an adventure, doesn't it? Even though I really thought about making them with jam instead!" Then, as she pours some of the liquid into the cap, she grins conspiratorially. "...but then I still made peach tea. Hee hee...!"

Setting the cap-turned-cup in front of him, the little princess folds her legs and settles her sandwiches on her knees, a grin thrown toward the lake and skipping over its silvery surface.

"And as for stories... I know! My brother and sister always look so serious, but they're really gentle sometimes, too! You know that, right, Merric?" A peek stolen at him from the corners of her eyes holds a shining, incontrovertible faith that yes, surely, he must! If anyone understands, it will be Merric -- because Merric always hears her.

"It's true! When I was really little--" When I still had time with them. "--Michalis always wanted to look super serious. But then, if I asked him to play wyverns, he'd always, always carry me on his shoulders. No matter what." That part of him remains even now, in a way, though its roots have grown gnarled and its branches in thorns; he has always cut pieces of himself away for that which he chooses to champion. "And you know what else? Papa would tell me fairytales when I met him, but whenever Michalis tucked me in, do you know what he'd read me?"

A laugh bursts like a bubble in the morning light; Maria leans back, hands (and sandwich halves) held close to her heart.

"History! Over and over again, with shiny, fiery eyes! Hee hee... No one loves Macedon like him. And Minerva always tries her very best without telling anyone how hard it was. Even for the little things! When I held tea parties in the garden, she'd study all the different flavors so we could talk about them together. And when I couldn't go to the festivals because Papa said I was too little, Minerva would take me up on her wyvern and let me watch from above..."

The corners of her eyes soften, warmed by sharing these glimpses of her family as no one else ever sees them. She grins even as she eats, chewing slowly, rose-colored eyes trained on memory's horizon.

"...What about you, Merric?" Her voice is a bit softer when she speaks again, a smile woven into their lilt. "I want to hear them, too, if you want to share them. The precious things -- the things you wish everyone could know."

Do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? Mostly with MC as less anxiety of getting the portrayal or lore/canon wrong. I do like Lords too.

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? I wish I could write a soft/tragic character which people would love/protect. Or a complete arsehole but I always feel bad being too mean.

What kind of scenes, situations etc do you believe you enjoy writing the most? I've really enjoyed writing pokemon AUs and word count challenges.

Do you have any scenario in mind for your muse(s) that gets you thinking “man I hope I get to write this one day”? Maybe some other type of AU which aligns with other interests like Persona/KH/ Camp Half-blood etc.

Favorite TOA-related memories? Just the love and support from everyone here and the fun we all have together hyping each other up. Plus Lore events. Especially Unscripted 2022 where Shez became a K-pop idol in dance offs while Byleth was in a apocalyptic future. The dichotomy was hilarious.

"i'm lynette—"  is all she gets out (because it's only polite after he's introduced himself, isn't it?) before this 'sampo' triggers an explosion right in his hands. the recoil blows back lynette's hair and pins her ears back, coupled with the shut of a single violet eye to mind any airborne sand.

"...ugh."  was that a grumble? was that a mild look of disgust?

no, no. she needs to be kind.  "are you alright?"

it was an accident, she thinks. surely. this is what she wants to tell herself, except that lick of good faith is ruined by her sharp eyes—because, well, sampo's attempted(?) fiddling was not lost on her.

but ultimately it's fine. lynette swats away some imaginary sand from her shoulder before picking up another one of their explosives. her leg slides to take a pointed step away from her still slimy, but now singed partner.  "activating lyney mode..."

turn 2 with hot pods: 18 = crit! +4 points. total score = 6

and lynette hurls it at the little targets. DOUBLE BOOM! she doesn't miss, thankfully, and even hits a few extra to make up for what sampo didn't. they aren't doomed yet. it's only the second turn. the victorious shouting of some of the other teams signals they'll need some luck and a little catching up, though.

"don't worry."  lynette turns, and reassures him regardless. but she doesn't step closer���just as a safety measure for now. nothing against the guy.  "it's just a game, anyway. i don't know if there really is a prize, but try not to hurt yourself...these toys seem dangerous."

Happy October, everyone! As you may already know, Gnostic Hymns is celebrating its first year anniversary this month! It's been a fantastic year full of faces old and new, and we are so happy to have had you along for the ride with us. We've got a lot to get through in this newsletter, so let's get to it!

Spiral Abyss has concluded! We hope you had a fun time getting to test out more of our system than ever before. If you haven't already, please review the closing post for more information on prizes and feedback.

We are introducing a brand new system to the group! As an incentive to keep up activity amongst the group, Gnostic Hymns is introducing monthly artifact rewards! Here's a glimpse at how it'll work:

For every 5 IC posts in a calendar month, muses will gain 1 chance to roll for a tier 1 artifact for a maximum of 3 rolls a month.

Upon claiming 3 tier 1 artifacts, you will be given the opportunity to exchange them for 1 tier 2 artifact of your choosing.

Interactions with the same muse and ask memes will not count for more than 3 IC posts towards this reward each.

Ability to claim these rewards will start in November, with posts from October eligible to claim. We will be providing instructions on how and when to submit your claims closer to time. For those of you who were not involved in Spiral Abyss, you can preview our current artifact options here.

We have also updated our Rules and Guidelines regarding characters with NPC familiars. Going forward, the ruling will be as follows:

Certain NPCs exist in game as designated companions to playable characters, such as Ajaw, Oz, Gouba, Changsheng, and Mr. Tail. Gnostic Hymns will not consider these characters separately appable from their designated playable character, and muns will maintain jurisdiction over their familiars narratively. Following this, however: Gnostic Hymns will consider Clara and Svarog separate characters, allowing them both to exist as appable characters within the group at the same time.

As many of you know, we will be hosting another group-wide event in November to celebrate one full year of GH. Keep your eyes peeled for more information when signups drop next month!

do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? reiterating this from the last time i filled this out: little guys and pensive freaks. i also fundamentally like characters who experience internal conflict of interests between their morality and their loyalty/duty/other social trappings. its tasty!

do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? i love digging deep into lore and piecing it together even if its not immediately evident and a bit fragmented (its the soulsborne enjoyer in me). BUT if i need to do this for a main or major character with a bajillion dialogue and context clues strewn across three playthroughs of a game and i could easily overlook things i would be a little too scared of getting soemthing wrong. "oh x loves orange juice" "WRONG x said as a one off in the middle of this heavy story segment that he hates orange juice and prefers strawberry milk actually" i would fucking die. i would die

UNRELIABLE NARRATION. shit you look at and go "hm that aint whats going on rn at all". love that shit. i try to not overuse it but i love when it becomes more evident midway through a scene. good stuff. i also love writing impulsive stupid responses and vividly descriptive scenes, but also i love writing affection and devotion in general, even if exceptionally gooey and cavity-inducing, even if ill-advised and misplaced. there's so much more i can add here but i love writing i love writing with people i love writing with y'all. love and peace.

and violence. i used to be scared of fight scenes but now i love thinking in those milliseconds between the violence. flurries and slurries of blood. can i rip more shit apart pretty please

incredibly loosely speaking. i want edward to realise he's been a bit fucked up actually and have to sit in that thought instead of shrugging past it as usual. i want chad to sit with someone and just connect with them so they don't feel as alone (yes this has happened i just love when this happens). i want denning to forcibly feel an emotion, and whether they get better or worse from it might depend entirely on their company.

favorite TOA-related memories? sorry that i keep bringing up edwards 37.5 damage astra during the final fight of apollyon ouranos i just can't stop thinking about it. that's so much fucking damage. that said i loved banding together against the impossible and FUCKING WINNING
