She had been unaware of his presence, slipping deeper into a well-deserved slumber, her reward for all she endured. His voice fell on deaf ears, for as she dreamed, it was not of him but of a different life, a distant place, a reality that lived in the past.

Instead of seeking her clan, he remained here, cloaked in the same shadows as she, supporting her petite frame in his embrace, allowing his shoulders to burden her head. Wisps of her hair were pushed away from her cheeks and he stilled in his breathing as he looked upon her.

Her lip was peppered with a bruise, and upon its corner he spied that it had been split from where the dried blood gathered. Fingers brushed them lightly, allowing his fingers to record the memory of the warm breath that swirled against them with each breath she released. For a few moments, he did naught but watch her, stare at her resting against him.

She was light, soft, and smelled of flowers drenched from a rainshower.

He didn't know what he was thinking, leaning to her face, trying to ensnare her very breath, but he soon found his lips hovering over her own, hesitating to touch her.

And when he did, the briefest touch sparked the encompassing, calm darkness that shrouded them, to immediately lash out. Like a defense mechanism, it whipped around his neck akin to sinewy rope. The squeeze came suddenly, and caught unawares, he flailed his hands and felt air depleted out of his lungs as he let out a strangled cry to rouse her from her slumber.
