I think you should talk about old movies more it was sooo fun reading your takes on nominations and stuff
You’re so sweet thank you so much shoo <33 just for you I am going to talk about Barbara Stanwyck for a bit because she is soo underrated and was so underrated by the Academy
So Barbara Stanwyck was a great actress and she was an independent actress I think which means she didn’t have studio backing. But she made some great movies and was nominated four times for Best Actress and never won which is an ATROCITY that they had to rectify by giving her an honorary award later in life so let’s go through the nominations
First was Stella Dallas (1937) which was a spectacular performance and she would have earned it. Her or Greta Garbo for Camille because the woman who actually won didn’t deserve it and I despise her. Actually you know who should have won was Anna May Wong with the role in The Good Earth that she was refused (the woman who won Best Actress this year did yellowface for that movie)
So then we have Ball of Fire (1941) which I do not like that much but she was good in it. She should not have won this year the person who should have won this year was Bette Davis for The Little Foxes (Joan Fontaine, who won this year for Suspicion (which sucked because of the ending), should have won for Rebecca (which is a great movie) the previous year) but you know what’s new with the Academy screwing over Bette Davis. She should have been nominated for The Lady Eve (1941) instead which is a great movie with Henry Fonda that is a fairly similar character and it’s just all around better (this year was ALSO the “sisters beefing” year with the more fun Old Hollywood Joan rivalry but this isn’t Crawford it’s Fontaine which I would ALSO love to talk about because it’s SO interesting!!!!!!)
Next is Double Indemnity (1944) which is her best-known role and one of my favorite movies. It’s so so good watch it if you haven’t!!! It was a huge upset when she didn’t win and I’m pissed too but you know who she lost to? Ingrid Bergman. In Gaslight (1944). Bergman earned her Oscar fair and square
So finally we have Sorry, Wrong Number (1948) which is a great movie and Barbara Stanwyck not winning for this is inexcusable. She didn’t win because Jane Wyman had to win because she hadn’t won the year before. Which whatever I’ve never seen a Jane Wyman movie all I know is she divorced Reagan (so hooray for her!) but Barbara Stanwyck should have won for this performance. I’m even okay with the fact that Olivia de Havilland didn’t win this year for The Snake Pit (1948) because she won the year after that for The Heiress (1949) which is such a great performance. This should have been her year this should have been her moment and I’m mad that it wasn’t
So yeah that is a list of recommendations AND a history lesson about one of the best actresses of the era! And people only talk about her in relation to Double Indemnity usually but she did SO much more than that (and what I’ve said here!!) she was so talented and she kept working into the eighties!! Thank you for letting me rant I love talking about this stuff lol
#thank you SO much shoo this was therapeutic <33#next time ask me about the acting awards for movies in the early 1950s because hoo boy do i have opinions about THAT#old hollywood#asks
