I’ve posted about it before and I’ll post about it again: starfield literally means so much to me, and i am glad for the presence it now has in my life.

it, as a game, represents a lot of the things i care so deeply about, down to its core: science, knowledge, astronomy, space exploration, wonder, discovery, optimism, humanity, existence, and our place in the universe. constellation is the epitome of those things, asking questions and searching for answers i, too, want to find.

to play starfield, to me, is to entertain deep desires which lie hopelessly unfulfilled in my real life. i would love to live in an age where extensive exploration of the cosmos, in-person, is possible. i would love to see the wonders of our universe with my own two eyes, my own two feet on foreign ground.

i would love to live in an age without such meaningless struggle and pain and loss and injustice and exploitation and uncertainty as our own. starfield depicts a universe highly imperfect in that right, but even just the prospect of living on a planet not currently undergoing unprecedented, catastrophic global heating - as a result of avoidable inhumane, selfish greed - means a lot to me. it’s a fiction in which it’s difficult not to indulge.

anyway, on a lighter note, starfield stands on its own as a universe i love to get lost in, but it’s also given me a fun and challenging new hobby as a mod author.

as far as that’s concerned, i never pictured or planned becoming a mod author, but it stands as a testament to my adoration for the game that i taught myself how to modify it, create for it, and enhance it.

i appreciate, truly, getting to help others, through my mods, play a more personalized, or fun, or interesting game. it fills me with joy that i can bring others joy, on such a large scale as this. my creations have enough downloads to fill hundreds of madison square gardens, and that is absolutely insane and incredible to me.

starfield has held a special place in my heart for just over a year now. i said, then, that i loved the game at launch and that it would only grow, and that’s been true. i am confident that starfield will not only stay with me for many years to come, but remain something i cherish for a very long time.

so, my skyrim se seems to be broken. despite updating all mods that complained, the game crashes before even reaching the opening menu. because of that, i don’t even get a crashlog. downgrading also didn’t fix it. so, time to disable all my mods and reenable them one by one to try and figure out what is breaking this stupid mess of a software.

or, you know, just play my oldrim. i actually think this might be the perfect time to restart my blue-scales save file and hope it won‘t break again

another thing about starfield, as someone who, yes, are you fucking kidding me i would be a space explorer if I could, no reservations about it, is that it lets me envision this embodiment of what my life could’ve been if I’d been born 300 years later. does that make sense? like it’s not just a game i like playing for fun in the same way as something like cyberpunk or fallout. it is for me, genuinely, the closest I’ll ever get to this true want that i have that i’ll never be able to attain.

consider sarah morgan. the explorer. made to explore space. what on earth would she be doing if nobody invented the grav drive?

but i have no choice. stuck on earth and I think that’s such a shame.

i mean, maybe it’s all nonsense and science fiction is science fiction. if i’d never been exposed to this type of media, had the seed planted, would i feel the same as i do now? i guess that argument doesn’t matter because we all have our influences that push us in certain directions, but ultimately it is us who choose to continue in that direction.

maybe humans will never reach other planets or solar systems. i hate to be pessimistic but we already have seemingly insurmountable problems on this planet.

the truth is, we don’t fucking know what the future holds. we’re already living in some old dreamer’s sci-fi fantasy right now. tiny metal boxes that show us anything we want and let us communicate across the planet instantaneously? all of human knowledge at our fingertips? virtual worlds that let us envision our wildest dreams? shit, passions like mine now, in computers and tech, are themselves reserved for only those lucky enough to live alongside them.

so maybe there is hope for some sarah morgan one day.

but what about the dreamers lost in time?

i have been waiting for starfield my whole life.

and it will stay with me as long as i live.

I know I’m comparing apples and oranges here, but I’m still annoyed that in a period of 7 years, BioWare managed to produce the entire Mass Effect trilogy AND the first 3 Dragon Age games… and yet in 7 years since Fallout 4 came out, all Bethesda’s done is fumble around trying to make Fallout 76 playable and then switch gears to a new IP.

Like, I’m not blaming them for wanting to expand their roster with a new series, and from what I’ve seen Garfield Starfield looks like it’ll be a fine game, but… I dunno, when you spend that long bumbling around trying to make 76 worth the effort while your fanbase looks on with increasing frustration, then decide to return to the single-player experiences we know, love, and (affectionately) mock you for, maybe you should do it with that series that repeatedly put you on the map?

But no, you’ve already left TES to languish in marketing’s industrial milking machine for a decade now, what’s another 5 years? We’ve gotta sell people on our new IP while they’re desperate for a single-player Bethesda game! Otherwise, without the aid of series-loyalty, the game will need to stand on it’s own merits and we just don’t have that much faith in the project.

That being said, would surgery be feasable in the wasteland?

With how long healing is and with how dangerous the wasteland is it would probably only be possible for people living in major cities

I feel like Carrington wouldn't feel comfortable with other doctors in general, especially for surgery

I imagine him as kind of a stickler for health and sanitation and doctor Crockers floor is literally drenched in old blood

Maybe he'd trust Amari because the Railroad trusts her but because of the long healing time and his importance to the Railroad he wouldn't bother

He's pretty good at sewing though (as most of the wasteland is) so he's sewn his own binders

Probably in neutral colors but he has at least one binder that Deacon tie-dyed rainbow

Started T because people kept assuming he was a teenager (he's probably pretty short) and he got sick of it

I don't think coming out is as common in the Wasteland because like, everyone is some flavor of queer

So Carrington is in that middle ground where he's not hiding his identity but he's not going to bother telling people unless it's important and/or comes up in conversation

He WILL chew out anyone who makes transphobic comments on other queer Railroad members though
