Blupjeans Week Day 2 - Ghost
Lup Taaco founded the premier science camp for teens - Camp Rocks! - this side of Faerun almost a decade ago. She did it by herself (mostly) and has the awards, articles, and accolades to prove that it’s a success.
So where does Davenport, her investor, get off going behind her back and hiring someone new without consulting her? Sure, enrollment has plateaued in the last couple of years, the main complaint being that they needed to shake up their staffing and curriculum, but she had it handled. She could take care of it herself, this was just a bump in the road. She didn’t need the help of some fancy doctor, this ‘Dr. Hallwinter’ that Davenport worked with at the university.
Lup scoffed while thumbing through his resume and cover letter. Top of his undergrad at Neverwinter U, a triple major in chemistry, astronomy, and physics. A brief stint working at a funeral home - a little weird, but everyone goes through a quarter life crisis, right? Returning to school a couple years later to get his masters and PhD and now taught at the same university while simultaneously doing interplanar research with Davenport. At the bottom of his resume with “related skills” he put ‘huge nerd’, as if that wasn’t obvious enough.
“Well, at least he knows what he’s talking about,” she muttered to herself as she threw the papers aside. There was no use fighting it now, she had spent weeks arguing and it wasn’t getting her anywhere. And it wasn’t like this was a bad idea, it just wasn’t her idea. This was her camp, after all.
---
Okay, maybe this Dr. Hallwinter guy wasn’t such a bad fit. They got off on the wrong foot, having a couple of heated discussions (fights) about things that she could barely remember. But now, she was standing in the corner of the pavilion, watching him give a very animated lecture on stars and planets. Angus McDonald, one of their first campers and the only one who came every single year, kept raising his hand to ask new questions and Hallwinter loved it. The two of them could go back and forth for hours, talking about theories and experiments and life itself. Angus had signed himself up for all of Dr. Hallwinter’s classes for the summer and loved every minute.
And he wasn’t so bad to look at, she supposed.
Lup was snapped out of her reverie by the class laughing very loudly at some Fortnite reference he made. Without realizing it, she smiled too. Dr. Hallwinter looked up at that moment to see her and his grin grew even bigger. With their eyes locked together, he dabbed and the class lost it all over again. When she giggled at that, she could have sworn he was blushing.
---
Every year towards the end of the summer the staff throws a “spooky soiree” to celebrate the end of camp. Everyone dresses up in a science-themed costume, they use the different things they have learned to create gruesome and cool decorations and effects, and they end the night with a ghost story bonfire. It’s easily Lup’s favorite night of camp. She loves amazing all of the younger kids with the cauldrons of “witches brew” (just dry ice in some punch) and grossing them out with the “eyeballs” (peeled grapes). This year she sewed some LEDs into her black vest, creating stars and constellations. Lup glowed in the dark and she fucking loved it.
She was in the middle of a (spooky) explanation of the witch's brew when she caught sight of Dr. Hallwinter walking up to the party. He was wearing a white shirt with lines drawn across it like a measuring cup and a long red robe over it. She was pretty sure he was wearing a graduation cap, too, which would mean…
“Holy shit you’re a graduated cylinder!” Lup shouted at him from across the way.
Immediately squeals of “language, Miss Lup!” began in front of her and she apologized to them as Dr. Hallwinter walked over with a smile on his face.
“Sure, am! This is pretty much my only Halloween costume, but I do love it.”
“Well, it certainly works for you, Dr. Hallwinter.”
He blushed before saying, “Lup, please just call me Barry. We’ve been having this discussion all summer. The only other person who calls me Dr. Hallwinter is Angus.”
As if to prove his point, Taako swooped in at that moment in a chef’s costume with the letters “FE” written on his shirt and yelled, “Excellent costume, Barold! You look even more like a nerd than usual and that’s saying something.”
Barry laughed. “Thank you, Taako, or should I say Iron Chef?”
Taako bowed deeply. “At your service, sir.”
“Dr. Hallwinter, sir!” They saw smoke before they saw Angus and Lup was a little alarmed before she realized that it was part of his costume. The boy had dressed up like a volcano with fake lava and smoke coming out of the top of it. “Look, it works!”
“All right, buddy!” The pair high fived and a weird fuzzy feeling struck Lup while watching the two of them.
“I think they’re about to start the scary stories over by the bonfire, are you coming, sir?”
“Pshh am I coming? Miss Lup asked me if I could host the festivities. Now you go get a good seat and I’ll be right over to start us off.”
Angus saluted him and ran off, eager for the frights ahead.
“Hosting the ghost stories, that’s a big deal Barold. Lup has hosted the bonfire herself for the last - oh, I don’t know, 2 decades?”
Barry turned to Lup, confused. “Is that true? I don’t want to impose or ruin any traditions.”
She waved him off. “Nah, it’s fine. We got off on the wrong foot, think of it as a peace offering.” Stepping closer to him and putting a hand on his shoulder, her voice got quiet. “You’re a member of this family, Barry.”
It was a good thing it was so dark, otherwise she would have seen his face turn a deep red. “You said my name.”
“Yeah, yeah, go get ready to spook some kids, Bluejeans.”
“Bluejeans?”
“You’ve worn the same blue jeans every single day since you started, even when we do activities by the lake. I’m absolutely convinced that you only packed that one pair for the entire summer.”
He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. “Well, you’re not entirely wrong.”
“Barold. My dude. You only packed one pair of jeans, no shorts, no swim trunks, for an entire summer at a camp?”
“There might have been a slight mishap on the way here in which I lost my shorts, swim trunks, and half of my underwear.”
No one moved or said anything for a second before Taako finally said, “Barry, you know we go into town once a week to get food for the camp, right?”
Barry just stared into space, regretting all of his life choices that led up to this moment. Lup busted up laughing, harder than anyone had seen her laugh all summer. As she wiped a tear from her eye, she patted his shoulder and said, “Well, I guess you know for next year, right?”
He raised an eyebrow playfully. “Next year, huh?”
“Well, I guess I shouldn’t make any promises until I see how well you do at our bonfire fright fest. Speaking of which, we should definitely be heading over there. I am a little nervous to see how Magnus has been keeping the kids occupied.”
---
Lup stood in the back of the crowd, letting Barry take over the hosting responsibilities of the bonfire. It was one of her favorite parts of camp, but it felt right to let him do it. He was doing really well, enhancing his performance with shadow puppets from the fire and interspersing the scary parts with science puns to ease the nerves of the younger kids. She found it absolutely adorable.
“I think Barold is giving you a run for your money, Lulu.”
“He’s better than I expected, that’s for sure.”
“I’m glad you gave the guy a chance. He’s a good dude.”
She smiled. “He is, isn’t he?”
Taako took a moment, watching his sister watch Barry. “You have the hots for him, don’t you? Jeezy creezy, I should have seen this coming. Those arguments you two had at the beginning were spicy.”
“What?!” Lup said, a little too loudly, face flushing. “I do not have the hots for Dr. Bluejeans. He’s just funny and good with the kids and very smart and looks good in jeans and oh my god I have the hots for Dr. Bluejeans.” Her eyes got wide and she clutched Taako’s arms. “Taako what the fuck am I supposed to do?”
“Lulu, I say this with all the love in my heart: don’t follow your instincts. Right now, your instincts are telling you to let him walk away tomorrow and not say anything, and they are dead wrong.”
“Ughhh but what if he doesn’t feel the same? It ruins the professional relationship we have and then I have to ban him from the camp and then Angus will hate me and we will lose our best customer.”
“Something tells me he also feels the same way.”
“But how do you know that?”
30 minutes earlier
Lup went ahead before the boys to make sure that Magnus hadn’t started a revolution of sorts and that left Barry and Taako to quickly clean up the food before following. Barry’s eyes lingered a little too long on Lup as she was walking away.
“Barold. Are you checking out my sister?”
“What?! No, what makes you think that?”
“I rolled a Nat 20 on perception, Barold. Legally you cannot lie to me. Now tell me: do you have the hots for my sister?”
Barry covered his face with his hands. “Maybe? Yes. Absolutely. Completely. As soon as she called me a poorly-dressed poser on my first day I was done for.”
“Rad. You should do something about that.” Taako started walking towards the bonfire, witch’s brew in hand.
“What, like tell her?”
“Tell her, kiss her, fight her, just something so I get to stop looking at you two making eyes at one another,” Taako yelled back without stopping.
“What - we don’t make eyes at one another, that’s not…she makes eyes at me?”
“Yeah, I think you’re good, my dude.”
The kids started clapping, signaling the end of the story that Magnus was telling.
“All right, thank you Magnus. Very scary, that story about zombie dogs. I think next up we have everyone’s favorite camp director, Miss Lup!”
The kids cheered and Lup had to pull herself together to nail this story that she was definitely going to pull out of her ass because she most certainly hadn't prepared anything.
“Are you kids ready to get the pants scared off of you?”
They screamed enthusiastically.
“All right, this story is about our very own Lake Igneous here at Camp Rocks. Legend has it that there was a woman who used to live in these woods by herself, not letting anyone else get near her. She refused help from anyone that came by, wanting to do everything alone and remain independent. The campers nearby could hear her blowing shit up in the woods and they knew to steer clear. One day, a man stumbled into her home, lost and confused. She lit off several explosions in an attempt to scare him off but he didn’t want to leave.”
As she talked, her eyes found Barry’s.
“He saw how lonely she was and helped her blow shit up. Eventually she grew to really like the man and really enjoyed blowing things up with him.” Barry laughed at that. Lup, suddenly remembering that this was supposed to be a scary story, abruptly tore her eyes away from his.
“They thought it would be a good idea to light some fireworks on the lake, so they took a boat out to the center and created the biggest and most beautiful explosion known to man, taking both of them out. They sacrificed their lives for the dopest light show, and sometimes, on a very clear and quiet night, you can see them in the lake, hand in hand.”
Lup bowed to signal that the story was over and she took her place back next to Taako.
“Lup, that was...pretty rough, not going to lie. Not your best work, that’s for sure.”
“I just got so distracted looking at his dumb face.”
“Yeah, that whole story was glaringly obvious.” She glared at him.
“I just need to get through this night without further making an ass of myself.”
He snorted. “Good luck.”
--
After the bonfire had wrapped up and all the kids were sent to bed, Lup sat at her favorite spot down by the lake to stare at the stars. She always sat here on the final night, reminiscing over the summer.
“Mind if I join you?” Barry’s voice came out of nowhere, but she would be lying if she said she didn’t expect it. Lup didn’t respond, just patted on the ground next to her. “So, your story was -”
“It’s okay, you can say it was shit, because it was. I definitely did not prepare this year like I usually do.”
“-good. I really liked it.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Especially the part where they die a fiery but beautiful death.”
She snorted and he took the opportunity to move closer to her, their shoulders touching.
“Thank you for letting me join the team this summer.”
“I would say you’re welcome, but I honestly didn’t have much choice in the matter.”
“I know. Thank you for giving me a shot.”
“Again, not much choice in the matter.” He laughed. “You turned out alright. Better than I was expecting.”
“High praise from Miss Camp Director.”
“Would you be interested in coming back next year?”
“Absolutely. Pretty sure Angus would boycott if I didn’t show up.”
“He would just show up on your doorstep. Expect a lot of emails this year. So I’ll see you next summer, then?” He hesitated. “Unless you already have other commitments, it’s fine, don’t worry about it.”
“Lup, I’ll definitely be here next summer. I was just hoping that maybe we could see each other a little sooner than that. Like maybe this Saturday, dinner?”
She smirked. “A little forward, aren’t we, Dr. Bluejeans?” His face dropped.
“Oh, God. Did I totally misread this situation? Fuck, I am so sorry, I am going to just walk into this lake and never come back -” Barry started to get up, mortified.
“Barry, stop.” He looked at her, eyes wide in embarrassment. She shifted so her face was directly in front of his. “You didn’t misread this situation.” And then she kissed him.

Jeezy Reflects On “Thug Motivation” On Its 15th Anniversary
Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 101 was the birth of a new era in hip-hop. Though T.I. and Gucci Mane had already put this new wave of hip-hop on the map, Jeezy had the backing of both Def Jam, as a solo artist, and Bad Boy, as a member of Boyz N Da Hood, and was able to bring trap music to new heights. With today marking 15 years since the album’s release, the rapper shared a lengthy post reflecting on his evolution since those days in 2005.
“Hopped off the porch in my momma two bedroom trailer with a dream, a grind and an all around vision. My vision was to take a culture that was demonized and told they would never be anything or have anything. I endured any type of obstacles u can think of; from dodging penitentiary to  having a full time job of staying alive . I always told myself if u want heaven its on the other side of hell,” he wrote.
“So I took all the chances to get there. In the process I obtained and gained insight of the art of (adversity) and I turned my pain into passion and put the passion into my music, so the world could see it was possible. To become something even when everyone is counting on you being nothing,” he continued. “Even at this present day, everything I stand for is about evolution. Evolve or Die! Thank you to everyone who supported my vision and my music, that got some through your hardships, prison time, college courses and even life in general.”

Let's declare some winners. Photo-Illustration: Vulture, Maschine Masters / YouTube and Crooklyn Reactions / YouTube In just one month, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s Verzuz The Beat Battle series has gone from a new event that connects the past and present of hip-hop to an exhilarating excitement in our inner spring, joining DJ sessions from D-Nice, Questlove and others, as well as the unpredictable Ontario artist Tory Lanez. Quarantine radio like remote viewing but essential live for rap and R&B fans while live shows and festivals are shelved by COVID-19. Verzuz reinvents the DJ battles of the beginnings of hip-hop for the set "one gotta go". The premise is simple: two eminent producers (or singers or songwriters) join live on Instagram and compete to decide who has the best catalog. The rules met on the fly by trial and error. As it stands, each battle is fought over 20 rounds, each competitor making a move and hearing a rebuttal. Verzuz is fun, simple and wide open - maybe a little too wide open. The public is mainly in charge of the rating, and there is rarely a consensus on the points. Regional biases and generational schisms are increasing. Playing a deep cut makes you lose the point almost flatly, even if it's one of the greatest songs of all time. There's nothing wrong with a slugfest, but it's exhausting to hear people throw out timeless classics. You can be a legend with decades of success and lose the crowd too far from the radio. You can be a veteran who changed the game forever and get smoked in the public eye because someone else's music is fresher in everyone's shared memory. You can score points with records made primarily by someone else. If you have cultivated a relationship with a leading artist, you are almost guaranteed to win. Despite these minor problems, Verzuz makes dull weekends more enjoyable and gives the game a spirit of friendly competition. It also teaches fans how many heads it takes to make a record. You could hear the same song in three different battles: once from a producer, again from a co-producer, then again from a songwriter who helped refine the melodies or flesh out the lyrics. That said, the repetition of the hits also highlights the need for more variety in the casting of candidates, a concern that Swizz and Timbaland seem to address in programming in the future, as the boom bap giants RZA and DJ Premier recently teamed up for one for ages and revenge between the 80s and 90s. R&B veterans Teddy Riley and Babyface are in the works after a failed first try. Verzuz needs talent from different regions and times, and desperately needs women. Until we know what will happen next, let's review what we have seen so far, ranked from best to worst to absolutely doomed. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcM3MKN92O0[/embed] -> What is the summary? When Babyface first postponed its battle with Teddy Riley this month (while R&B born Kenneth Edmonds took the time to recover after being tested positive for coronavirus) asked who would fill these shoes on Easter weekend. Wu-Tang RZA's brain and Gang Starr's DJ Premier intensified. The native of New York built his legend on grainy tones and samples of funk and kung fu, shoveling a pile of metro soil on the threshold of traditional hip-hop in the early 90s with classics like Enter the 36 rooms, Liquid swords, and Only built 4 Cuban Linx. Premier, a renowned New York hip-hop venue via Houston and Boston, is a platinum assistant capable of creating new melodic lines from pre-existing records. While RZA made a splash on Staten Island, Preemo made magic with Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep and more. Their competition was a clash of rap titans that will go down in history. The duo played cat and mouse through 20 legendary street rap spins, then blessed us with a long, successful bonus round in which they forgot to participate in the main battle. Who won? Preemo was the favorite in the days leading up to the battle, but RZA was armed with good records by Method Man, GZA, Ol ’Dirty Bastard and Raekwon. He was too close to hang on to the score. The winner is anyone connected to hear the story of New York hip-hop song by iconic song. (That said, I'm on the side of RZA.) Strong points: Decades of hip hop royalty have camped in the comments, RZA arriving in a sleeveless vest and gloves with Afro Samurai playing in the background, the Prime Minister calls Wu-Tang's ugly hit "Gravel Pit" a pop song and follows with "Ain't No Other Man" by Christina Aguilera, RZA chasing the hot song by Biggie diss "Kick In the Door ", off 1996. Life after death, with "The Long Kiss Goodnight", another diss track from the same album. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H_l_Mzh3EI[/embed] -> What is the summary? Swizz was a 17-year-old boy from the Bronx when he started making beats for DMX and the Ruff Ryder clique in the late 90s. Virginia Timbaland's innovator was the other benchmark of the time. If you didn't have Swizz or Tim or the Neptunes involved in your major label album, you were spoiled. It was the case of Jay-Z Flight. 2: Hard Knock Life at Drake Thank me later and beyond. The depth of the catalog made this battle a war of attrition; these are guys who can go song for song, artist for artist. The two clashed on records from Jay, Drake, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake and dozens of others. The first Verzuz the battle is the longest and most difficult to call. Timbaland is the most convincing musician; there are wilder things that happen to a Timbo beat than a Swizz seven times out of ten. But Swizz is a joker ready to take on roles that no one would dare better. Run away from Jay-Z's “Jigga My Nigga”. The melody is meaningless. It's hard like nails! Who won? I give Timbo the advantage for having encouraged Swizz to play R&B and to stay strong when his opponent's (killer) reserve of the 2006 Beyoncé classics has run out, revealing his opponent's shortcomings while highlighting its own strengths. Strong points: The Jay-Z War at six songs where we could hear classic cuts from the In my life albums, every time Swizz played DMX and Timbo joked, "You play your artist." Trash conversation is the key. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i18yHuizwc[/embed] -> What is the summary? Lil Jon and Teddy Paindergrass are the yin and yang of mid-2000s hip-hop radio. (Peace to the Ying Yang Twins, however.) T-Pain has made Auto-Tune the rap wave almost alone based on records like "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin ')" and "Can't Believe It" "and produced most of it himself. (Another time, let's talk about the imposing synths of "Drank" and "Chopped N Skrewed" which are just as instrumental for the massive sound of hip-hop from 2005 to 2008 as DJ Toomp jams like "What You" by TI Know " and "I Luv It" by Jeezy or "What Up, What's Haapnin" by Drumma Boy on Tip and "Put On" by Jeezy and Kanye.) Jon brought turbulent and crunk music from Atlanta to the masses and produced for everyone from Usher and Ciara to Pitbull and, yes, T-Pain. Who won? The back-to-back bangers and lively jokes of these two made this battle less of a war and more of a club night. It was too close to call. This time, the winner was us. Strong points: Lil Jon reminding T-Pain that "Buy U a Drank" borrowed its hook from "Snap Yo Fingers", T-Pain dancing and singing with live performances of his hits until Swizz said, "What do you think, Essence Fest? ", Jon scary the crowd with anti-vax conspiracy theories, all hell was unleashed when T-Pain played the remix of "I'm a flirt" by R. Kelly. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9xRjR8iz9c[/embed] -> What is the summary? Babyface writes majestic and masterful love songs for a long list of clients, including Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Bobby Brown, Boyz II Men and Ariana Grande. His solo albums Tender lover, For the freshness in you, and The day rank among the best R&B of all time. Teddy Riley, with producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, brought a new swing to the masses in the 80s and 90s, mixing hip-hop drums and R&B melodism for famous collaborators like Bobby, Whitney, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson. Riley's groups of singers Guy and Blackstreet have scored classics in "Piece of My Love", "Groove Me" and "No Diggity". The main event on Saturday evening drew the pre-game excitement of a Tyson fight for the adult and sexy crowd. Unfortunately, the battle lasted as long as an Iron Mike match, sinking into chaos early on when technical problems emerged at the end of Teddy and sabotaged the first hour. He was trying to perform for his website while broadcasting the battle on IG Live, with a room full of staff, while Babyface directed his end of the feed alone in headphones. We heard about six songs in the first quarter hour, after which Riley asked for 20 more minutes to work on the sound, and Babyface quietly escaped and promised to reschedule the already rescheduled battle. Saving this lower ranking battle is Monday night's rematch, which went off without much technical difficulty or really no glare by Teddy Riley. After a few hilarious minutes trying to figure out how to pin a comment on IG Live, the duo settled in, played a bunch of classic records, talked about trash, cast shadow and reminded everyone why we considered them to be R&B greats. Who won? You could say that Babyface won the first night after entering the scene with two Bobby Brown classics and remained a good sport while Teddy's entire group, hype, staff and film crew fumbled with microphones and speakers, trying to stream live on two separate platforms and drown a deadly echo that Riley swore at one point came from the other guy. The rematch went to Babyface, and it wasn't close, although Teddy got some good rebuttals, reminding us that the new classic of the Keith Sweat "I Want Her" jack swing is (almost) as good as "Every Little Step" by Bobby Brown. " Strong points: Toni Braxton on the way to war Twitter, Mariah Carey and Adele make jokes, Babyface playing "Change the World" on acoustic guitar while Teddy understood the sound on Monday, Raekwon in the comments talk about stealing people from Babyface songs, Riley's team trying to fix the microphone problems by bringing in even more microphones, Babyface leaning a bit on social distancing while Riley sank in a room with what appeared to be ten heads present but no masks in view the SAME. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJPMKL_qTV0[/embed] -> What is the summary? The third Verzuz the battle re-established order when the successful R&B songwriters Ne-Yo and Johnta Austin matched the goods. The two artists are masters of tasteful love songs with hot sequences that last from the middle to the end. Ne-Yo's successes like "So Sick", "Because of you", "Miss Independent", "Irreplaceable" by Bey, "Take a Bow" by Rihanna are fluid R&B classics. Johntá's catalog - see: Bow Wow and "Like Mine" by Ciara, "Run It!" By Chris Brown "Can't Help But Wait" by Trey Songz and "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" by Mariah - fill the picture of a bygone era of health 106 & Park countdown and contemporary radio rate paced without worries. Who won? The two songwriters selected their best material, for the most part, although Johntá could have applied pressure with a few Mariah joints in platinum. Ne-Yo finally won, although it is better appreciated as a two-and-a-half hour nostalgia playlist from the 2000s than a formal beat battle. Strong points: Johntá sipping wine in a suit and looking quietly disturbed, Ne-Yo offering a gentleman's trash speech, The-Dream appearing in comments wondering why he couldn't have such a civilized battle. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EznbRsGAhw4[/embed] -> What is the summary? The second Verzuz event associated two hitmakers who have had an impact over the past ten years. Mostly known for drums exploding like bombs, the West Coast rapper and producer Hit-Boy composed songs by Jay, Kanye West, Bey, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Nicki Minaj. The Toronto Boi-1da has worked with Drake since its first mixtape in 2007, Room for improvement. "Miss Me", "Headlines", "0-100 / The Catch-Up" and "Over" - all him. The catalog also includes the Eminem Hot 100 “Not Afraid” topper and scorchers with everyone from Rick Ross to Rihanna. It seemed to be an equal match until everyone realized how infinite the Drake Boi-1da classic pool is. Hit-Boy put pressure on big radio records like "Feeling Myself" by Bey and Nicki and "Backseat Freestyle" by Kendrick, but Boi-1da had an answer for almost all of them. Who won? Trying to push Boi-1da out of his comfort zone was a solid strategy that ultimately backfired on Hit-Boy. He pulled out too much of his biggest hits too soon, and it cost him in the back half of the battle, when Boi-1da locked himself in, playing ten years of Drake successes. It was a little bit like the people who fire fireballs in street fighter: It's rude, but if you can't beat him, you can't beat him. Strong points: Hit by drawing his Rihanna card with the Anti banger "Woo" but then catching "Work", Boi-1da presenting with a drop of Drake saying: "I should continue to sign with Hit-Boy because I had all the success, my boy", on " 0-100, "the two producers preview the unreleased music by Nipsey Hussle, Nas, Drake and Roddy Ricch. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN1dGTHR-wo[/embed] -> What is the summary? Mannie Fresh is a southern rap hero best known as the architect of his Cash Money. In the 90s, he produced the first albums of Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Big Tymers, B.G. and Hot Boys, creating beats essentially from scratch. The streak continued over the next decade with TI's "Front Back" and "Big Things Poppin" Scott Storch started out as a member of the Roots and became one of the must-have beatmakers and session players of the artists , working with everyone from 50 Cent and Chris Brown at Paris Hilton and Brooke Hogan. Storch's story is complicated in a way that Mannie Fresh is not - by 2010, Storch's career had become a cautionary tale about addiction and over-spending - but regular customers like Brown and more recent stars as 6ix9ine and Russ have been looking for in recent years, as Fresh's relationship with Lil Wayne has led to good investments on Tha Carter V and this year Funeral. In battle, the two producers played classics alongside a few more recent songs, but the age gap in the crowd was palpable. Verzuz largely satisfies nostalgia; the successes of 99 and 2000 are not always as good. Who won? People swear it was a rash in favor of Storch, accusing Mannie Fresh of having a sound too specific to its time and region. It's a riot, because Storch's taste for eccentric synth sounds, hand claps and Americanized ragas screams as much as "Back That Azz Up" in 1999. But Storch finally took this one. Strong points: Storch smoking fat dulls all the time and lights them with a portable torch, Jadakiss laughs in the comments when his collaboration with Mariah Carey "U Make Me Wanna" took effect, Storch slipping "Cry Me a River" by Justin Timberlake in the mix on the technicality that he is credited as the song's key player in the Justified album cover notes. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K0-O0YFYB4[/embed] -> What is the summary? New York rym French Montana is a trap artist whose real gift is the hooks; the catalog of tubes on which it is presented is surprisingly deep. According to the song, Tory Lanez is either an R&B singer using rap rates, or a rapper with an attentive ear for the melody. (The nose Quarantine radio combines the steamy humor of a radio jock with a steady stream of famous guests like Megan Thee Stallion and Drake and a long line of fans ready to twerk in front of the camera. It's the spring hit, attracting an average of a quarter of a million heads each time.) It sounds like a quirky match until you play a lot of their songs back to back and see the common threads. Who won? Tory Lanez has chops, but French has relationships. In a field where the biggest success always takes precedence, songs like "Stay Schemin" and "Pop That" will always demolish "Ferris Wheel" and "K Lo K", even if these are all good songs that share aesthetics . The French have won a mile. Strong points: Lanez playing "Kika" by Tekashi 6ix9ine Day69 but refusing to recognize who it was, the French nonchalantly smoking hookah, Lanez being a good sport to lose. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpGZ86i310I[/embed] -> What is the summary? The scandalous confrontation between Atlanta-based hitmakers The-Dream and Sean Garrett is the reason Verzuz now has basic rules. Dream - who contributed to the creation of many successes, including “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” by Beyoncés and “Touch My Body” by Mariah Carey, and created his own memorable songs in “Falsetto” and “Rockin 'That Shit' - was cordial and timely in his Sunday evening scrap. Garrett is best known by people who do not read the lining notes as a guest in Nicki Minaj's "Massive Attack", but known to those who know him as the co-author and / or co-producer of singles like "Yeah !, "by Usher Ciara's" goodies "and Yonce's firecrackers like" Ring the Alarm ". That said, he showed up late, shaking the camera lasciviously and letting the recordings topple over for too long. (That's why contestants are only allowed to play a song until the first chorus now.) Antics ate most of the first hour, where Dream released a steady stream of solid songs, and Garrett played random songs, digging Blueprint 3- Will be songs by Jay-Z and unpublished first solo. But the scales were rocked, and the fight became good when Garrett pulled it together and started matching Dream song to song. Who won? The crowd swore that Garrett was smoking Dream, but what really happened was that he shot a Rocky. He ate shots through the opening laps and swayed towards the end when his opponent withdrew. But it's not boxing. There is no KO. It is important that Sean blew up the first hour. It is also important that Dream lets slip a comfortable lead, giving up too many points while leaving too much heat on the table. Sean won ... but it was close. Strong points: The-Dream playing mini-golf in front of the camera as Garrett appears slammed and makes impromptu opening remarks, Dream showing the demo version of Jay-Z's "Holy Grail" with himself instead of Justin Timberlake, Garrett scary the crowd with faces of love, famous spectators like Big joe, Kelly Rowland, and Rick Ross get tired and act in the comments. https://oltnews.com/all-verzuz-instagram-battles-live-ranked-vautour?_unique_id=5e9f3fce8833d

JAY-Z’s Blueprint Album Will Be Preserved In The Library Of Congress
Every year, The Library Of Congress selects 25 musical titles to add to its National Recording Registry. This act is meant to honor pieces of art for their cultural significance for future generations. A National Recording Preservation Board decides the annual inclusions. This week, JAY-Z’s The Blueprint album became the most modern addition to the archive. It also becomes Shawn Carter’s first work of art to receive this prestigious honor.
Jay’s sixth album released on September 11, 2001, the same day as the attacks on the United States. Arriving less than a year after The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, The Blueprint marks the strongest pivot in Jay’s career. An artist with ties to The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac (in very different ways), to own the #1 spot squarely. One of the most poised contestants, Eminem, was a producer and lone guest MC on the album. The other contestant, Nas, was in Jay’s cross-hairs of high profile usurp, “The Takeover.” On The Blueprint, JAY-Z reinvented his sound with Kanye West, Just Blaze, and others during a series of sessions over just several days. The Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder found the ultimate five-year progression from debut Reasonable Doubt. With a D-boy’s confidence and an exec’s get-it-done mentality, he pivoted to his 2000s stand as a Rap magnate. Often criticized for his resistance to vulnerability, Jay let the songs cry on his behalf. As the Roc Boy was lunging for the top, he made some of his most relatable music. The writing on The Blueprint is ultra-specific, but the themes, sounds, and attitude of the double platinum campaign seemingly spoke to all. Jigga had transformed to Hov’, and when he put his legacy on the line for the belt.

Blueprint: How 1 Kanye West Beat Tape Changed Roc-A-Fella Records Forever (Audio)
“The Takeover” was Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots-meets-Monopoly, as JAY-Z, perceptively an artistic underdog to Nas, knocked the Queensbridge icon off of his block. Also addressing Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, Jay was naming names—unlike his ’90s tussles on wax. “U Don’t Know” was the ringside celebration after the fight. Once dismissed as a drug-dealer MC, Jay-Z used the cold Just Blaze sample chop as a chance to show his “Michael Corleone”-like transition from New York crimes to The New York Times. The title track would also prove significant. The cold exterior of Hov gave way to an MC unafraid to not only acknowledge pain in his childhood, but one who said thank you to his circle. That, and “Song Cry” were hyper-aware reactions to Jay’s often lack of intimacy in songs. Together, the Roc’s in-house hit-makers of ‘Ye, Just, and BINK! made an album that may as well have been produced by one set of ears. The prominence of Soul, intricate slices, and broad instrumentation made this man’s words sound like prophecy. “Renegade” placed Jay and Eminem back-to-back, with a song that put the comparisons in the backseat, and the lyrically-dense message in the front. The Blueprint cemented Jay’s pole position, and it showed how a great MC and a gripping story still needs patience and refinement. In the Hip-Hop landscape, The Blueprint is a skyscraper.
Jay’s specificity, his sound, and his confidence gave way to 50 Cent, Cam’ron, T.I., Young Jeezy, The Game, Rick Ross, and a host of other dominant 2000s voices. Notably, Jay followed with two additional volumes of The Blueprint. However, few can argue that nothing compares to the double-platinum, chart-topping debut article.
A Mini-Documentary Shows How JAY-Z’s Blueprint Laid The Plans For A New Era In Hip-Hop
Joining Jay’s album is Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly soundtrack album, Nina Simone’s Civil Rights outcry “Mississippi Goddamn,” Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September,”  Cab Calloway’s “Minnie The Moocher” (which he performs in Blues Brothers), Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man,” Richie Valens’ “La Bamba,” and others.
In the last four years, Hip-Hop continues to occupy real estate on the registry. Run-D.M.C.’s Raising Hell, N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton, and Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill have all been selected.

As the members of De La Soul have been negotiating the revenue tied to their first six albums, they have been discussing 3 Feet High And Rising‘s inclusion, which dates back to 2010. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message” became the first Rap recorded added, in 2002.

This edition of the Stanbic Musical Festival 2018 has been dubbed the “Anakazi” edition.
Tumblr media
Earlier on this year at a press briefing on June 18 2018, Chanda Chime-Katongo (Head of Public Relations, Communication & Women’s Banking, Stanbic Bank Zambia) explained that the female line up of supporting acts is all part of honouring the late Victoria Kalima (Hon. Minister of Gender, MP).
The Late Hon. Victoria Kalima
Social media from Twitter to Instagram to Facebook was buzzing with the news that both headline acts had touched down on Zambian soil met by his worship himself the Lord Mayor of Lusaka,
and with a day and a few hours to go, it’s the big 5, 2 international acts for the price of one, the Golden Circle sold out, Zambia and the SADAC region are you ready to #MoveWithTheRhythm with the bank that makes you dance as #StanbicDoesMusic?
Curated by the Zambian event management titans R&G, this staple event on the local and regional musical event calendar couldn’t be more eclectic with some new acts and some veterans on the line up. Zambian Afro-pop sensation Salma Sky and contemporary Gospel songbird Esther Chungu make their maiden appearances on the Stanbic Music stage and promise their fans and festival goers a show!
Soul sensation Kiki popularly known as Kiki Sings Zed makes her return to the line-up and as per her social media has been keeping the vocal chords in tune in the studio and is ready to belt those ballads and serenade the masses. Wezi the Afro neo Pop Soul dynamite needs no introduction with 2 back to back festivals under her belt and fresh off the London edition of Lake of Starts , this 3rd performance promises to be an experience.
Last but not the least before the main event comes on is the Kopala born veteran MC and the peoples champ 187 the Chef himself,
back and single for the night again after he put on a virtuoso performance of rap wizardry last year on the same stage.
On the ones and twos to ease you into the mood will be King Nano on Friday night and V Jeezy on Saturday. And now for the main event!
Tumblr media
Although his career dates back to his first album Everything in 1993 and with 13 albums under his belt, it was in 1997 when I and fellow hip hop and R&B heads and the mainstream really took note of Joe with his sophomore album All That I Am. Anyone remember the Big Pun hit Don’t Wanna Be A Player? That cut is originally off All That I Am, the Pun version however which features Joe on the hook as well as in the video was that cross over no.1 hit that cemented the R&B staple. Now then if you are Zambian and do not know any songs off My Name Is Joe, which played in every take away and boutique via the blue tapes, you clearly are not of that era, I’ll get to you in a minute millennial’s. With production credits including veterans such as Mr. New Jack Swing Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, matched with Joe’s prolific song writing, My Name is Joe was a hit already! From Stutter to I Wanna Know (the original Mr. steal your girl anthem) to I Believe In You which played and still plays at weddings today and the Thank God I Found You remix ft. Mariah and Nas (that’s how big Joe was), that third album was really the charm! The 2001 album Better Days with the single Ghetto Child ft. Shaggy and The Boys Choir of Harlem really bridged the gap between the old school and new school Joe and bonafide Joe as an R&B superstar. In my humble opinion, Joe was an unofficial member of G-Unit, case in point: Ride Wit U ft. G-Unit of the fourth studio album and then… The magic and chemistry of this colabo off this club and radio banger would later be replicated on I Wanna Get to Know You off the G-Unit debut album Beg For Mercy that same year. I’ll end my ode to Joe at Ain’t Nothing Like me which had a contemporary feel yet beautifully captures and era with productions from heavy weights such as Stargate, Bryan Michael Cox and Cool and Dre. Remember If I Was Your Man? Yeah that was off Ain’t Nothing Like Me. Joe… Zambia is ready.
Tumblr media
I really only know one cut by Brian McKnight, you guessed it, Back at One. So much so such I even remember him singing it on an episode of My Wife and Kids where he gets a pair of signed boxing gloves for his services from Michael (Damon Wayne). However, such is the beauty and essence of such platforms such as the Stanbic Music Festival, it creates new experiences and provides a platform for musical awareness and depth. I look forward to enhancing my knowledge and singing along to familiar favorites by Mr. McKnight.
Your hosts on the night are veteran MC’s and fixtures on the Stanbic stage, Ba Gesh real name Chishala Chitoshi Jr. and voice over maestro Kamiza Chikula. And now a word from our sponsors. Powered by Stanbic Bank,
Alliance Motors will be driving our international guests during their stay, DSTV, Hai, Liberty Insurance, Southern Sun, Taj Pamozdi, MTN and LaFarge are adding the quality of their various brands to make this event one of international standard.
Look out for that gourmet provided by local food vendors with a diverse array of food to choose from.
FEIRA communications have social media on lock! Ladies and gentlemen, if you have not secured your ticket as you read this, the time is now to avoid FOMO and disappointment. It’s official, the 5th Edition of the Stanbic Music Festival in honour of the late Victoria Kalima is upon us with an all-star cast to entertain us, Zambia is ready for Joe and Brian McKnight. #StanbicDoesMusic #StanbicMusicFestival

F.O.E.S (Friday On Elm Street)
Finally, the wait is over. Two of New York’s finest rappers are back with a project that will go down in history. The legendary Fabulous and Jadakiss released their most anticipated album on November 24 (Black Friday), titled Friday on Elm Street. Its theme is based on two horror characters we all love, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. The collaborative album consists of 12 tracks, with guest appearances from Future, Swizz Beatz, Teyana Taylor, Styles P, French Montana, Yo Gotti, and Young Jeezy. For those who are unfamiliar with the work of these two artists you may remember the singles “Into You,” featuring Tamia, and “Can’t Let You Go,” featuring Lil’ Mo and Mike Shorey, from Fabolous’s second album Street Dreams; as well as “U Make Me Wanna,” featuring Mariah Carey, and “Why,” featuring Anthony Hamilton, from Jadakiss’s second album Kiss of Death.
Tumblr media
Friday on Elm Street shows growth and progression from both artists. They have collaborated on several tracks together, including “Respect It,” ”The Hope”, “B.E.T,” and they were featured on Young Jeezy’s ”OJ” and Troy Ave’s “Do Me No Favors.” These artists are well compatible. Although the album was initially supposed to be a mixtape titled Freddy vs. Jason and released in February 2016, the project had been pushed back. Both artists spoke on the delay of the project and confirmed that it would not only become a studio album, but it would also be originally produced in 2017. The album was set to be released on Halloween but missed its deadline. Both artists decided to change the name of the project to Friday on Elm Street and capitalize on the holiday Black Friday weekend.
The album gives off one of those vibes where you can just sit back and listen to its content and appreciate the message that is being told. It’s an album you can play straight through without hitting the skip button. The lyrics are well put together and original, and each bar and punchline will be remembered years from now.
Here are some of the punchlines from tracks that will be remembered:
youtube
“Theme Music”
"I'm in homeroom with dime sacks / If you miss something, rewind that / Memories take you back to the time / Take the time to remember that you can't get the time back / Now your boy's invincible / Got me teaching niggas principles / It just make me wanna holla / You can't even get a dollar cause I can't talk sense to you " - Jadakiss
youtube
“Ground Up”
"That boy ’Kiss is a bastard, you gotta see him / He giving out free caskets and mausoleums / My first tour, I copped work off my per diem / Emotional motherfuckers hurt, that a EM / At least a quarter mil' for the V, the foreign / Some niggas that'll kill you for free just off a DM" - Jadakiss
youtube
“Soul Food”
"We all need a little culture / A little time away from bird ass niggas and vultures / I tell you what you need to hear and not try to insult you / I'm too old to kid you, I gotta adult you / Listen, the shit is getting outta hand / Like fumbles in football, I humbly put y'all / In y'all fucking place, that's my OCD / I give a bitch a little bit, but it's mostly D" - Fabolous
youtube
“Principles”
"Fuck it, he should've had the llami on him / Actin Holly, had to go Tommy on him / You do dirt, you get dirt, that's how germs spread / Squash the beef with a funeral, it's confirmed dead / See it's never 'bout the money cause I burn bread / It's the principalities like Big Worm said" - Fabolous
youtube
“Talk About It”
"Can we talk about the cost of living? / We can talk about guns, but we forced to get 'em / It's a new race every time you cross the ribbon / Might've skipped the beat, but we never lost the rhythm / You don't understand so you ain't able to feel it / When my momma's in pain, I ain't able to heal it / Fatigues and field boots, the outer wear / Sponsor what, vote for who, fuck outta here" - Jadakiss
“Ice Pick”
“Every verse is a novel (read) / Every other chapter, I bust you or carve you (leak) / I'm a grown man, so I don't wanna argue (uh-uh) / 1-point-somethin' for the stone in the marble (mmm) / Thank God for the things that I got already (thank you) / No housewarming, crib hot already (woo!) / I'm heroin compatible, powder-ready (uh) / Them niggas that booked you is in the crowd already” – Jadakiss
Three of the songs listed above contain samples from musicians such as Marvin Gaye, Glenn Jones and the Modulations, and Tevin Campbell.  The song “Theme Music” was produced by rapper and producer Swizz Beatz and contains elements from Marvin Gaye’s “Far Cry.” It has more of an up tempo beat, which keeps listeners motivated and focused on accomplishing their goals; whether for workout purposes or completing their job/school work, this song is guarantee to make you feel good. The song “Soul Food” was produced by C Sick, a producer who has worked with artists such as Lil Durk, Tory Lanez, and Logic. “Soul Food” contains elements from Glenn Jones and the Modulations “ I’m Willing to Run All The Way.” This beat has more of a soulful vibe and is considered to be another motivational song. The song “Talk About It,” produced by Mark Henry, Kidexcluzive, and Mally the Martian, samples Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk” to raise awareness for the Black Lives Matter movement. The song talks about injustice and police brutality that is forced upon African American men.
Friday on Elm Street is a project that will be remembered many years from now. These two originators bring back real hip hop and reach out to the newer generation after being consistent since the early 2000s.
