🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction? 

Ooh okay Kyler lore time! I’ve literally been writing fanfic since I was three or four, writing (and illustrating!) my own stories of my favorite childhood characters. I had two multigifted older siblings, so much of my early childhood was spent sitting still and quiet at band concerts, dance recitals, sports events and academic competitions. My mom always diligently packed me a bag of things to do, including books and stickers and blank notebooks to write and draw in. So I became a connoisseur of stories from a young age! But of course I didn’t know that it was called fanfiction, or that it was a hobby anyone else had. I soon moved onto writing my own stories with original characters.

The real answer to this is that I got big into Twilight fandom as a thirteen year old, and I happened across fanfiction dot net looking for content. After marveling at the fact that other people made up stories like this too? And shared them??? and after reading a few for myself, I thought, “I could totally do this too (and better.)” So I began my first true fanfic. And I’ve slipped in and out of writing since, but I always come back to it! It’s fun!

🥝 ⇢ do you lie a lot? what's the most recent lie you told?

I lie a lot to my students. They’re fourteen and nosy, and they don’t need to know everything about my life! I lie and tell them exciting things I did over the weekend. I lie when I do exciting things over the weekend that they wouldn’t understand. I lie and tell them that I’m single. I lie and tell them that yes, this worksheet is for a grade, so you have to do it. I think the last lie that I told a kid was just before we let out for the summer, that you’ll love that kind of summer job! It’ll be fun!

🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?

There’s no one thing. If I’m trying to read something and it’s poorly written (ie unrealistic dialogue, really really bad grammar or formatting, characters acting OOC in a way that breaks immersion), I’ll call it quits. But that’s different for every fandom/set of characters. Sometimes I like the OOC-ness, and sometimes it’s too much. If the paragraphs are too long, I’ll either shove the fic in a screenreader instead, or just give up. (Usually if there are distractingly long paragraphs in a fic, that’s not the only writing problem the author has.)

i LOVE the way you draw faces and expressions—where do you usually get references/learn how to do it? i’ve been trying to make characters of my own and the face just always throws me off

thank u!!! faces are the most important thing about a character to me and they are my absolute FAV thing to draw

i feel like i learned mostly from manga, but have been bolstering that foundation by just LOOKING at art in general. i dedicate a lot of time for looking at art and finding inspiration. i mainly use twitter to find cool artists and pinterest to find everything else, ie manga panels, fashion photography, random insp stuff. helps to find a lot of artists u like so u can have an idea of where u wanna take your style

nothing beats refs of actual ppl/studies but sometimes it can be kinda hard to know where to start. i personally pull a lot from the manga i read. i'll use takehiko inoue's art as an example for this post bc hes my fav artist.

these are some of the characters from vagabond. takehiko inoue's style is super realistic w unique faces. i esp like how he does his characters' eyebrows and the ridge of the eye socket. the latter literally was a revelation to me earlier this year in establishing shading and planes of the face, which always gave me trouble before.

each character is super consistent. no matter his age, this guy's (kohei tsujikaze) face is unmistakeable bc of his bottom eyelashes, eyebrow shape, light irises, and full bottom lip. kohei makes that same smirk with the left corner of his mouth all throughout his life. i think details like that are cool so i try to keep my character's facial features and expressions consistent too. it depends on the character a bit. some characters are more emotional than others and might show a wider variety of expressions.

so what i usually do is define in my brain what each facial feature looks like for each character. for example, rohan has bold eyebrows and small, downturned eyes w no visible pupil. he has heavy eyelids, a strong nose w a bump, :3 mouth expression, and a wide chin. he looks calm, gentle, and mature. he has a lot of square-ish shapes

vs volo, who has a pretty mid appearance in game (lol) so i like to exaggerate the sharpness of his features to show his energy. he is loud and passionate, so i like making him look kinda wild. his points make him look like a dangerous porcupine beast which is funny but also cool and fun to draw

takehiko inoue is like my one example here bc if i had to pic a singular artist who's had notable influence over my style, it'd be him. but really the list of influences is enormous. i really stress just looking at art while making time to practice. with time your eyes and hands improve, so keep pushing

18. how do what you look for in your own writing vs someone else’s coincide? how does your writing influence your reading?

Omg this is tough…idk I think in a lot of ways they’re very similar I think I really love realistic dialogue like stuff that flows really well as well as really interesting descriptive language (which I personally have a hard time with but I try to get better at) ummm I look for like really palpable emotions and stuff that makes me feel a lot (also really love writing that makes me feel weird but that’s more for like regular books not fic) and I guess all of that influences my writing cause it’s stuff I really strive for

21. what are the most important facets of creating a character, to you?

Ooh I think like first and foremost humanity I think soooo many writers on here do such a great job and finding the humanity in a character in a really raw way and I think that’s so so important I also think like figuring out all the small details or a character’s life is important to me what kinds of things do they like? What are their values? What annoys them? What and who do they love? What are their motives? Like I think the more detail u can pull out of a character even if u don’t put it in the writing helps soooo much making them really fleshed out

shsjshs idek where to start with Dola ;w; thank u for giving me an outlet for talking about her LND incarnation omg I hope you know what you’re getting into when you asked this…

so like!! in general she’s my OC that I use everywhere bc I just like her too much to even care about making other OCs because to me she’s like… the ultimate cool doll >.> she tends to retain a lot of her traits each time + I try to keep as much of her original conflicted artist background as possible while still making it make sense with the lore of the universe I’m putting her in

So in LND as MC, she still has Caleb + Josephine, is a Hunter, and ofc has the aether core in her heart but strays from canon in that:

Art has a huge place in her life because her parents were renowned artists and she was primed to follow in their footsteps. She ends up dropping it sometime after she was orphaned though, and only picks it up around high school age and in secret

Gets dreams of fragments of her past lives with Rafayel, but she can never recall the face of the man that’s always in her dreams once she wakes up. Trying to sketch out the man’s face is her main reason for getting into art again, and it snowballs into her making art inspired by her dreams in general

She knows a lot about Lemurian myth and history because she dreams about the place + this one Lemurian so much that she had to look into it, and by extension is fascinated by the sea

Which also means that she did actually attend Rafayel’s lectures at her university when he became a visiting professor there. They kind of only have one proper conversation throughout that entire year though.

Her heart issues affect her more than they affect MC in canon, so the UNICORNS treat her a little differently to work around it. Largely that means she doesn’t go on as many missions as MC seems to? And is often deployed a support/the human radar bc of her Evol rather than a frontline fighter.

Doesn’t feel that strongly about being a Hunter once she actually is one? Tbh I think she kinda hates a majority of the work and commitment that comes with it but feels she can’t just quit after spending so much time working towards becoming one. Xavier and their training sessions together are kind of the main things keeping her there (+ she has fun killing Wanderers)

She’s not as bubbly or cheerful or bratty as the canon MC is. Her personality is a lot more reserved and introverted and she LOVES studying + learning, but there’s still a bit of playfulness there. There’s actually so many parts of the main story, Tender Moments, and Bond/Memoria that I’m changing or outright excluding because they just don’t work out for her the same way they do with canon MC sigh >.>;;

LOVES plants and flowers. In every iteration I have of her she’s at least half covered in floral tattoos and her home is always full of them! Very into flower language to an extent that I’m not ahdjsjs she makes me research a lot of things…

Kind of obsessed with death (mostly because she believes herself to be on a short timer) and is a little fucked up? Will join Rafayel in his quest for vengeance and will believe his murders are all justified if she finds out about them tbh.

^Okay I feel like that’s a lot ahdjshsja >.> in LND I wrote her with Rafayel in mind as the endgame >.> Zayne’s more of a bestie/brother/secret third thing, and Xavier… I guess to her he’s a friend but he definitely is in love with her? And Dola eventually becomes aware of that and isn’t quite sure what to do about it.

Gosh anyway!! Thank you for being interested ahdjshsjs she’s been my baby and muse for like… 3-4 years at this point? I have so many thoughts about her like you wouldn’t believe ;-;
