Long post ahoy, I finally felt like writing it so here it is: A list of the characters who THUS FAR have been assigned established 'canon' monster types in Turnabout Moonlight. PLUS, I wrote up a SECOND list at the bottom which includes all the different monsters that are established to exist in the setting, including brief descriptions of each. I'll probably come back and edit shit on here as I think of things...

Characters

Phoenix Wright: Dragon (partial ancestry; spends the first 26 years or so of his life just looking like a regular-ass human until he manages to awaken deeper abilities.)

Gregory Edgeworth: Human. First became aware of supernatural community through his former spouse; remained involved in magical affairs to fight on behalf of supernatural entities bc of his son.

Miles Edgeworth: Werewolf (born with lycanthropy, inherited from his other parent)

Larry Butz: Caprid (TM goat person; formerly listed as just a regular human whose family was cursed to have persistently terrible luck.)

Dick Gumshoe: Troll

Misty, Maya and Mia Fey: Vulpid

Morgan and Pearl Fey: Vulpid

Dahlia Hawthorne and Iris: Human-Vulpid

Bikini: Vulpid

Manfred von Karma: Human sorcerer; a very highly regarded Rich Douche and bureaucrat in the judicial system which helps govern human-supernatural societal relations.

Franziska von Karma: Lycanthropy-cursed human. (haven't decided quite yet at what point along the timeline she gets turned, but she spends a good chunk of her life living as a regular human sorcerer type like her dad.)

Klavier Gavin: Faerie

Kristoph Gavin: Faerie

Zak and Valant Gramarye: Catfolk

Magnifi and Thalassa Gramarye: Catfolk; bloodline carries enhanced abilities of magical perception.

Trucy Wright: Catfolk; possesses enhanced abilities of perception.

Jove Justice: Lycanthropy-cursed human

Apollo Justice: Werewolf/Catfolk hybrid (born a werewolf, inherited the condition from Jove; unaware of his hybrid status for most of his life. Possesses enhanced abilities of perception inherited from his mother's side, powers boosted by bracelet that helps focus the ability.)

Metis and Athena Cykes: Dragons

Juniper Woods: Cervid (TM deer person; formerly had her listed as a dryad.)

Simon and Aura Blackquill: Half-demons. Aura is physically more visibly demonic than Simon is, as Simon appears almost perfectly human, even without a disguise. Simon is also an accomplished sorcerer and member of the magical bureaucracy.

Taka: Magically enhanced hawk; Simon's familiar.

Byrne Faraday: Harpy (crow type)

Kay Faraday: Harpy (crow type)

Shi-Long Lang: Werewolf (the Lang clan is a very old and and well established werewolf family in Zheng Fa)

Callisto Yew: Faerie

Ema and Lana Skye: Demons ???

The Judge: A telepathic otherworldly being of unknown origin, whose physical form is utterly imperceptible. He still acts exactly the same as in canon and, SOMEHOW, still has grandkids that he's really eager to tell you about.

Deigo Armando/Godot: Sphinx or Manticore (I still haven't settled on which he is, or if he's somehow both)

Sebastian Debeste: Sphinx (tentative)

MONSTER TYPES

Main types:

Dragons: Exceedingly rare and mysterious; as far as anyone is aware no true "pure blooded" dragons exist anymore, and any dragon representation among the cast is limited to what are technically human/dragon hybrids. Draconic abilities are not well understood as they are not only rare but also wildly variable in nature. The only consistently shared trait seems to be that all people with draconic heritage are immune to curses and most magical types of poison.

Vulpid: Humanoid foxes. Tend to be highly proficient in one or more types of magic, transfiguration magic being the most commonly expressed. The Fey clan long ago learned to combine their natural transfiguration magic with their sensitivity to the spiritual afterlife, developing a technique that allows them to channel the souls of the dead into their own bodies.

Werewolves: Humanoid canines (duh). Their arcane biology is exceedingly bizarre and has highly aggressive curse-like properties which can infect/overwrite most other types of magic; because of this, there are both people who are naturally born werewolves, and humanoids who have been infected with 'lycanthropy' and turned into werewolves later in life.

Catfolk: Humanoid felines. Tend to have a strong affinity for illusion magic. It's rumored that some catfolk families are so attuned to that type of magic that they can naturally see through most magical illusions, and even sense if a person is being untruthful.

Faeries: Magical humanoids with some insect-like physiology, who hail from a parallel plane. They have a strong affinity for casting illusion type magic that exceeds even the abilities of most catfolk, moving beyond merely tricking the eye and into fooling the other senses as well. Contact with iron causes them physical harm.

Other monster types established (in need of further development)

Cervid: Humanoid deer. Tend to have a strong affinity for plant magic.

Harpies: Avian humanoids.

Caprid: Humanoid goats.

Trolls: Usually very large, tusked, have big floppy ears and a long tufty tail, eat rocks for sustenance. Nothing else decided about them really decided yet. Possibly turn to rock in the sunlight?

Demons: ...They exist. I haven't really decided what their deal is.

hmm this is hard, because the laughs have been few and far between for this wip lol there are some funny moments but I've been working on some of the darker moments lately so I can't really remember when I last laughed while writing a scene? but I may have during this snippet, because this is my dog's cameo in this book lol

An enthusiastic black and white farm dog greeted us not with barks, but the wag of an overly swishy tail, as we turned off the lane to the last farm on the outskirts of Grokolis. He lapped at our hands as we bent to pet him, his fur sun-warmed and soft. Solera hurried off, leaving the pair of us to follow her, when she noticed the farmer’s wife peeking out of the house. The dog bounded inside without a care, but I stopped beside Solera to listen to our instructions for the day. 

We were to tend to the farm animals and the garden, as she had more than enough on her hands with a gaggle of young children and a sick husband to care for to add farm work to her list of things to do. So, we set off, gathering eggs and milking goats. The dog joined us, scattering the chickens and stressing the goats out enough that they refused to stand still long enough to be milked. So, I offered to take him with me to the gardens while Solera finished up with the animals. 

He kept very close, nagging me for the occasional belly rub as he lounged beside me in the dirt, his head lolling in my lap, no matter how often I had to move. I picked the weeds, gathered the ripe tomatoes and peppers, and when Solera joined me, she started picking some of the citrus from the trees casting precious little shade over us in the increasingly warm day.

Bouillabaisse | Which character was hardest to name?

probably Solera and her younger brother, Aziri (who will be coming up later) 

their father is a native to Scinra, the nation/island she grew up on, and her mother is the daughter of immigrants from Betii, so she has a mixed culture home, so I wanted her (and Aziri’s) name to represent that. Scinra is inspired by Spain, and Betii by Ethiopia, so I was looking at the different languages to make a combination of words into their names. 

Sol is taking from the Spanish side, which means “sun” and -era is taken from the Amharic (romanicized) word yaberali, which means “shine” so Solera means “sunshine”

Aziri has a similar name construction. In Dracrie, there are two moons. One is silver in color, and the other a sort of turquoise-y blue. So Az is taken from the Spanish word azul--”blue”--and -iri is taken from the Amharic (again, romanicized) word biri--”silver”

it was fun figuring this all out but it took me a while to decide exactly what I wanted and what would fit them both alsdkjfalj

(also, the family’s last name is Aurado which is a combo of the Latin word aureum and the Spanish word dorado, both of which means “golden”)

((also, just for the record: Thala is taken from the (romanicized) Greek word thalassa which means “sea” and Galanis is a Greek surname that means “blue”))

Bread Soup | A character that developed into way more than intended

I’d probably say Cilia Rimal. I don’t think I’ve posted much about her, as she does have a smaller role (currently), but she’ll definitely be showing up again in the second half of the book. She is the Elder Sorma, aka the woman who is in charge of looking after the Stoli of Katania. She’s a lot more...lenient with the Stoli than the Diamo (Geros) is aware of, especially given that she makes a potion to protect them before they’re taken away on merchant ships for months at a time. Which is....highly illegal so to be doing something like that under Geros’ nose is quite brave and telling for her character, and this aspect of her will be developed further in the second half when she gets posed with the question of “who will you choose: the Stoli? or Geros?”

She looks like a combination of Goddess Idunn (the golden apple gives this away) and Goddess Aphrodite (she is sitting in a shell with seafoam). But also looks like she may have a mix of Goddess Iris (the rainbow is there) and Goddess Thalassa (Empress of the Seas; the dolphins give that away). What a perfectly beautiful mashup of Goddesses right here!  . And here is the ancient Orphic Hymn to Goddess Thalassa: . [21] XXI. If someone presented a magatama to Phoenix, would they see any red psyche locks? Or possibly any black ones?

it depends on what he’s being asked about, of course, but yes, there are certain things phoenix would rather keep under lock & key, one obvious example being trucy & apollo being siblings, though that’s more to do with thalassa not being ready to reintegrate herself in their lives yet than anything else  ;     he doesn’t particularly want to keep it a secret, he’s actually itching to tell them the truth as soon as possible, but that’s neither here nor there.     that’s the usual red locks though  ;     the black locks are a entirely different.               the thing with black psychelocks is that they show when a person is hiding something even they themselves aren’t aware that they’re hiding, something that their mind & heart wishes to keep from everyone including their owner themselves, like a defense / coping mechanism.     phoenix is very much aware of most of which he hides, actively dodging subjects which he doesn’t want to discuss, speaking half - truths, giving vague answers & immediately digressing   ( this is especially prevalent in aa4 & hasn’t actually diluted all that much over the past two years ) .     there is, however, one thing which could potentially cause a few black locks to show, should it be touched on.     & that’s the actual full impact & extent of what the decade & a half up to just barely two years ago has done to him on a psychological level, i.e. trauma.               let’s have a quick rundown, shall we ??

iris & dahlia  :     the realization that he’d been manipulated for over half a year by someone he fully trusted & loved, & the fact that dahlia had tried to murder him &, when that failed, tried to frame him for murder ;

mia  :     seeing his mentor’s dead body & holding her shoulder only to feel the warmth slowly drain from her corpse ;

red white  :     going up against the man who he knows full well killed mia & said man laughing in his face, punching him, & subsequently accusing phoenix of the murder of mia ;

miles  :     experiencing firsthand the cruelty of what had become of his childhood best friend, twice, & only a few months later said friend being put on trial for murder, twice, & a few months later more, right after a trial that phoenix thought had proved just how well he & miles could work together if they put their heads together & sought after nothing but truth, finding out that miles had dropped off the face of the earth & being left thinking he’d died for roughly a year ;

matt engerde  :     his entire case, the blackmailing & the desperation to simultaneously do the right thing & ensure maya’s safety, but these two conflicting with each other & it tearing him apart ;

iris & dahlia   ( again ) :     that chaotic mess of a case, phoenix worrying about maya’s safety to the point where he tried to run across a burning bridge without even thinking about it, on the final day of the trial being all but convinced that maya was dead no thanks to dahlia ;

zak gramarye & kristoph gavin  :     zak’s case combined with kristoph being the biggest ass to ever exist costing phoenix his job & his reputation & then spending seven fucking years pretending to be friends with the guy he knew was responsible for his disbarment, gathering Receipts on his ass, & 7 years later zak   “ disappear in the middle of my own trial ”   gramarye showing up out of the blue to hand off a letter of rights for trucy & to ruin phoenix’s Second career, by accusing him of cheating, which is exactly how phoenix’s first career was ruined.

phoenix is well aware that past years have not been kind to him, but he brushes so much of it off that he likely doesn’t realize Just How Much these events have messed him up. he just rolls with whatever predicament life puts him in, carrying on best as he can, trying not to think about what’s happened in the past because it’ll only distract him from important things &, hey, everything’s pretty Good right now, he’s a lawyer again, the dark age of law is finally over, his agency is doing well, so it clearly doesn’t matter, right ???               truth is, he can dodge questions & talk around the truth   ( he is a Lawyer lmao ) , but no amount of smooth talk can hide the still present ticks & habits from his disbarment days, like hands absentmindedly going through the air where his hoodie pockets used to be & still being cautious with spending because he sometimes forgets he can actually afford things now, or the slight waver in his voice when he talks about the past two decades.     the magatama might not be apollo’s bracelet or athena’s mood matrix, but it could definitely tell that phoenix is hiding something.

Because this category is all girls, Athena’s introduction is literally her being a Doting Gal Pal™ to Junie, Trucy and Pearl being psychic kid buddies is canon iirc? it’s a good time all around. There’s two years between the oldest member of this batch and the youngest, and as far as i can tell like no male character who shows up more than once belongs here. 

1999-2004

Simon, Maya, Franziska (1999) / Ema (2001)/ Regina Berry, Kay, Klavier, Sebastian (2001/02)/ Daryan (2002)/ Nahyuta (2003) / Apollo, Clay (2004)

okay so im gonna kick this off with the only “”feasible”” m/f pair I can see here, fey///quill. Don’t get me wrong, Maya is a lesbian through and through (imho), but for [straight person voice] argument’s sake: there’s a lot in terms of a potential relationship there? Maya would think Simon as equal parts too cool!!! and too dedicated….. and they would both collect steel samurai trading cards, dont even lie to yourself. This makes 300% more sense than….. the other simon one. look inside yourself.That being said!!!! I don’t think they’ve even met, really. Timelines have always been kinda ehhhhh and if capcom wanted this we would have had it down our throats, especially now that they’ve existed in the same game. I want them to be friends.

ANYWAY look at all of those girls. I admit Regina is only there because she tried to apply to be Kay’s gf  in the yatagarasu but aside from her, any and all of them have met. They’re an ot5 or less depending on personal preference, and honestly any combination of the girls (especially if you exclude Regina, who’s only here on two technicalities) stands as plausible. This is compounded by all of these girls in particular being popularly depicted as lesbians!

aaaand the back six. I admit Daryan shouldnt be here but he’s put with Klavier sometimes and he’s also an asshole. That’s something I’ve seen in fics sometimes so there he is. Anyway. Outside of that and, obviously, Brothers Nahyuta and Apollo, it’s fair game here too? everybody else has a ship with apollo and that’s just the start of it, the only person I’ve genuinely seen never shipped with anybody is Sebestian. 

ANYWAY i’m personally partial to the fan favorites of this generation in terms of the boys (klapoll/o + simon and nahyuta) but im always down to throw clay into the former for the truest ot3. this is my Unneeded Opinion™ to close the category.

1992-1996

Phoenix Edgeworth and Justine (1992-93)/ Larry, Dahlia, and Iris (1993)/ Bobby Fulbright (1994)/ Adrian Andrews (1994/95)/ Maggey and the wonderful couple The Delites (1995-96)

it’s worth noting that the established grand larceny power couple were both born at the same time, that’s cute. also, Adrian is just here for reference against Franziska, who’s in the next chunk chronologically, and Bobby is here for reference against Simon, who is the same. (*deep breath* black/bright….. what could have been…….) also maggey is here to go up with gumshoe but i dont even remember where that dude is.

This technically isn’t a complete chunk. Lang is born in ‘91, in between this batch and the last one, but im making the list and the rules.

Not much to say here except bi phoenix is pried from my cold dead hands? right. Also i’ve never seen justine/ edgeworth in my life and i appreciate that in retrospect, although im sure it exists.

1985-1991

Observable phenomena: lana and mia were born consecutively and are big lesbians…… i should talk about diego here but i won’t, lemme save it for the end, i have conclusive proof mia is a lesbian.

1982-1985

ok this is kind of the point when things start getting irrelevant but we have the rebel leaders who were probably a ship? i havent done much fandom-ing wrt soj and also ray and kate who is like. the only person in his own age rage that he hits on. ray wyd stop being a creep.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

There’s a 13 year difference between badd (1958) and faraday (1971), making them the largest age difference ship with any traction in my heart. The gap between Gumshoe and Maggey is ten years? wow.

Morgan’s birth is approximated, but she’s a maximum 3 years younger than Greg (1966). 

 Most differences of 6ish years (Miles and Franziska, Phoenix and Maya, Athena and Simon in the outlying 12 year case) are portrayed as siblings (I mean I guess the latter two are my humble onion but. C’mon.) 

Thalassa is closer in age to gumshoe, Katherine Hall, Lana Skye, and Diego Armando (to name a few, there are more) than Zak Enigmar. There is no documented birthday for Jove Justice, but if he was older than twenty when they were married, the same holds true for him.

Defense attorneys aren’t suited to each other! As far as i can tell nobody with a badge on their lapel tries to date anybody else with the same.*

(*my idea that mia is a lesbian is vaguely rooted in this since mi/ego is the only thing that goes against it? and that ends badly! it turns out she didn’t feel that way for him and she realized that once he “died”, so hc that she only said yes to him to see if it would go anywhere/heteronormativity/realized she was a lesbian after dating him)

anyway every other co-counsel relationship is literal siblings or someone and Mr Wright.  

this got even longer than i was expecting but as a closing remark because of the story’s format and timeline we have a particularly large amount of gay ships! like the particular focus that the game casts upon the relationship between wright and miles, klavier and apollo, particularly NOT simon and athena, considering how similar the “i became a lawyer to save you!” narrative is to p+m and yet the story is about her mother, is about coming to terms with their own trauma etc, siblings, anyway. i’m done now.
