The Thailand-Burma Railway: From Hellfire And Back. || SofiaHotelHuahin
The "Death Railway" was constructed between 1941 and 1943 during World War Two with the intention of connecting Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) by rail so that Japanese forces, who had recently invaded Thailand, could move troops, equipment, and weapons into Myanmar and push the allied forces back into India and beyond.
Tumblr media
I had learned about the history of the Death Railway in school, but I didn't fully understand it until I watched The Railway Man, a movie starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, on a flight last year. The history and train nerd in me knew I had to go visit it when I first landed in Thailand a week ago.
The Thailand-Burma Railway is used for travel.
The Death Railway itself begins in Nong Pladuk, some 50 kilometers to the west of Bangkok, where it connects to the express highway running from Bangkok to Singapore.  It slowly meanders from Nong Pladuk to Kanchanaburi, the location of the famed Bridge Over the River Kwai, through dust bowl suburbia. The panorama gradually improves once the train over the fabled bridge and river, with jungle, mountains, and the twisting river to the left.  As it prepares to creak over the pack of cards wooden bridge, also known as the Wampo Viaduct, the train slows to a stop.
How to Get There, How to Get There Fast, and Where to Stay
The first choice would be to spend a day traveling from Bangkok to tour the Thailand Burma Railway. You may see the complete route by taking the first train from Bangkok to Nam Tok, visiting Hellfire Pass there (you'll need to take a Song-Thaew or taxi from Nam Tok), and then returning to Bangkok the same day by taking the afternoon train. It takes roughly four and a half hours to go from Bangkok to Nam Tok.
This alternative involves taking a long day's worth of trains (9 hours if you travel both ways) and leaves you with no free time to visit Kanchanaburi. If you only have one day, I'd recommend going with this option. If you have more time, I would suggest switching to...
The second option is to travel to Kanchanaburi by train from Bangkok Noi and stay there for one or two nights. Take the early-morning train from Bangkok Noi to Kanchanaburi on the first day. Here you can find accommodations in Kanchanaburi. I slept at the reasonably priced VN Guesthouse on the river, which offers stunning views from the restaurant and some rooms that are floating on the water, which is incredibly soothing. Explore Kanchanaburi in the afternoon of day one, go take pictures of the Bridge over the River Kwai, stroll through the war cemetery, and head to the Death Railway Museum in the city.
Tumblr media
Take the morning train from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok on day two, where you can tour Hellfire Pass (as per the one-day itinerary) before taking the train back to Kanchanaburi or, if you're not staying an extra night, to Bangkok. This, in my opinion, was the best method for traveling on the Thailand–Burma Railway.
To aid in additional preparation for this journey, the ever-helpful Man in Seat 61 has a wealth of information and train schedules.

Would you mind sharing your views on backpacking? 👀
Take all of this with a grain of salt because I'm mostly just bothered by backpacking content on Instagram.
I think the concept is fine. I'd actually like to do some backpacking some time.
But backpacking content, as well as most overland* content, always has a really weird vibe. It almost feels like cosplaying poverty if you know what I mean??
It's almost always young people from the so called "West" and almost always they're somewhere in South or Southeast Asia. The most popular backpacking destinations I'm seeing at the moment are Bali (exclusively that part of Indonesia for some reason), Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The algorithm has recently also started showing me content from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
Since flights to these destinations are usually quite expensive, and many of these people stay abroad long enough that they might need a visa and that accommodation and food would also add up, it can be safely assumed these people have a certain amount of financial stability. Some of them are full time influencers too.
And while travelling with a backpack instead of a suitcase makes sense, and while you want to have an "authentic" experience, the vibe on those videos is often sooooo weird.
They're always like "I just spent 45h standing in a cramped bus without AC because it was only $1. I'm sleeping on the floor of this abandoned building that costs me $4 a night. I only carry 2 t-shirts with me, can't find a laundromat and I'm travelling for 3 months. Yesterday I got scammed and got food poisoning."
And I'm like why are you doing this? Is it really more "authentic" just because it's a foreign country? You can find the same uncomfortable situations and people who live like that all the time in your home country, but when you're abroad it's cool and authentic and #humbling #eatpraylove. Meanwhile there's also people in that same country you're backpacking through who, like, have a comparable standard of living you're used to. Your holiday doesn't have to be luxury resorts but it also doesn't have to be absolutely god awful.
And of course there's also the factor of adrenaline and stepping out of your comfort zone but with these videos it seems like they're almost glamorising having an awful time in an "exotic" country because that's what it's supposed to be like? I guess?
Idk I feel like I should get the opinion of someone living in one of those backpacking hotspots to make sure I'm not just getting annoyed at nothing but I think the vibe is off.
*overland content as in "travelling from XY to YZ without flying - Day 420" type videos. They're often interesting and I follow some of those people and I actually have some ideas for cool overland or long distance train trips but some of the accounts also have a weird vibe. Most of the ones I saw were men and they're like hitchhiking through some desert somewhere and I'm like oh this would feel so unsafe to me as someone perceived female. And obviously they also make lots of content where you know they have lots money because they've been travelling for several months but it has that same fake low budget backpacker vibe.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure it does.

Thailand's Ultimate Island-Hopping Guide || SofiaHotelHuahin
Whether you want to stay for a week or spend a long time seeing the country, Thailand is a fantastic location with a lot to offer tourists. The islands of Thailand are renowned for their gorgeous beaches, carefree atmosphere, and fantastic activities like scuba diving. When compared to other tropical island chains, Thailand is affordable; in 2011, I was able to get by on as little as $20 per day. Island hopping is a fantastic way to see this beautiful region of the country if you travel at the proper time of year. So, in order to help you plan your next trip, I've put up a list of the top islands in Thailand.
Tumblr media
Traveling from Phuket to Bangkok
Most visitors to Thailand will fly into Bangkok and begin their island-hopping cycle in Phuket, as I did. There are a number of methods to travel from Bangkok to Phuket, and while buses are typically the cheapest, costing about $20, they can take up to thirteen hours and are frequently rather crowded.
While a flight is the fastest option and typically costs around the equivalent of $50 USD if booked in advance, using the train and then a shorter bus will typically take about six hours and cost about $30. Even though an aircraft is undoubtedly the fastest option, a trip by train or bus offers more scenic views and is better for the environment.
Top Places to Visit on Your Vacation
Phuket
Although Patong Beach's massive backpacker party scene made Phuket my least favorite place I visited on my vacation, it is definitely worthwhile renting a private home in a more rural area. There is a fantastic weekend night market at Patong Beach that I highly recommend visiting!
Koh Phi Phi
After departing Phuket, this is the obvious next destination on your island-hopping experience because there is a regular boat service offered between the two islands by a number of different firms. Individual Phi Phi islands (including the well-known "Beach" movie scene) and spectacular dive locations are available.
Koh Samui.
After visiting Koh Phi Phi, the majority of visitors will travel to Krabi on the mainland, where they will board a bus to Koh Samui. Here, you may find idyllic beaches like Lipa Noi and engage in a variety of activities like day trips to places like Big Buddha Temple and Na Muang Waterfall.
Koh Pha Ngan
The Full Moon Party, a monthly celebration that brings thousands of visitors from all over the world to the beach for a renowned dance party, is what makes Koh Pha Ngan famous.
Koh Tao.
From Ko Pha Ngan, a quick and inexpensive ferry voyage to Koh Tao lasts around an hour and a half. You can really connect with nature on this island by taking scuba diving lessons or helping with sea turtle rehabilitation.

How to Stay Safe While Exploring Thailand's Islands
When island-hopping, you need to exercise caution because, despite being very cheap, the boats between each island don't always have the finest safety records. Before boarding, make sure to examine the ferry to make sure it has enough lifeboats and isn't too packed. If you have any reservations, it might be advisable to choose a different ferry company. Although the majority of Thai people are kind, earning the moniker "The Land of Smiles," always use caution. Don't risk it because Thai drug laws are likewise extremely stringent.

if you could travel anywhere in the world that you havent been yet, where would you go?
that i HAVEN'T been? hmm ok. well, i really want to go to china! mainly bc i was supposed to go in 2020 and that got cancelled bc of, you know, a global pandemic. i also really want to go to singapore, which i've only heard amazing things about, and vietnam for the same reason.
i have done zero traveling in south america, so i'd love to hit up brazil and columbia, probably chile and venezuela as well. and of course!! australia and new zealand. honestly, there are SO many places i haven't been to yet, and i'd love to travel to all of them.
