“The way you stand,” he continued mercilessly, “one foot slightly in front of the other. The way you lift your heels off the ground when you’re deep in thought, like it’s everything you can do not to rise all the way to the tips of your toes. The spread of your fingers when your hands hang loose by your side. The lines of your body when you stretch those hands overhead.”
“Believe me, Lyra Kane.” Grayson’s voice was deeper now. “You never stopped dancing.”

Still figuring out Daisy and Jordan designs (especially Jordan hdfgkhdfgj), but here's some practice, mainly of Jay himself! I have a lot of fun drawing him and figuring out his personality. I've always pictured him putting a TON of effort into perfecting his appearance, so I think he should wear a simple corset to shape his silhouette into that Arrow Collar Man type look. Without it, I think he's got more of a strongman build. Strong and broad from growing up on a farm, living as a sailor for a while, and then being in the military, but a bit soft around bc of living in excess nowadays. I also feel the need to specify my Gatsby is about 5'6". This is vital information.
As for Daisy and Jordan, I'm trying to work out how to draw them both how I picture them and how they're described in the book. I generally know how I want Daisy's face and hair to be, but there are some things I'm still fiddling with. With Jordan.... Shes a struggle gdhjfghlgkjhdkj I originally wanted her to have straight hair, but then while sketching her I couldn't make it look quite right, so I tried something closer to how she looks in one of the older movies. I might stick with this, but make her a bit more butch in fashion styles. Idk! I'll have to figure that out as I go, I think.

No u see I simply had to buy all of these things from todays merch drop bc the shirt matches my TGG tattoo and the box set matches my other TWY anniversary box set and the camp flag will look great next to my other TWY camp flag that’s in a virtually indistinguishable color palette. I had no choice. It was required. My wife said she can’t even argue because “they’ve kept me alive for this long”.

Dear diary, I read The Grandest Game in four hours today (through a headache).
what was that ending???????? screams into void
I feel like I read part 1 of a book. Where’s my second half???? Is this a financial hack for authors??? (But I really appreciate jlb for creating this world for me to delulu in :D)
So, my thoughts:
I LOVED TGG
I was a little worried that the switching of 3 POVs was gonna trip me up, but I got used to it by the halfway mark.
Attempting to solve the riddles myself was really fun!
I was screaming at Rohan and Sav during the 88 locks riddle. What do you mean they needed 3 chapters to figure it out? Sav, you grew up with a piano (if I remember correctly)
I liked the pacing. I don’t have any complaints about the writing and dialogue being emo and stuff (like the other books) -> I have discovered that I like plot-driven books more than character-driven ones with lots of thoughts
So about those nicknames…
I attributed Savannah and Rohan’s questionable nicknames for each other to their unconventional childhoods — probably lacked opportunities to develop nicknaming skills
I decided to swap out “British” for “London” when reading. I can decidedly palate “Savvy”. It could act as a pun (?). The bar is low. After a while, I didn’t care about the nicknames. Doing small skip-overs when reading yk
I was a little confused on Gigi’s relationships with Knox and Brady. Well, first of all, I couldn’t and didn’t bother to differentiate the two men :”) so in the end, all I got was a muddled picture about the dynamics
But I don’t care cause I’m too busy re-reading the Gray/Lyra scenes
Last thing, I don’t know why, but now that Avery + 3 Hawthorne bros have become the “evil” game masters who have control over the game and players, I see them differently. Like I feel Avery is less relatable now (?). Part of that makes me feel sad and part happy cause our girl is now doing Big Things.
okay byeee. feel free to discuss more with me!! I’m on a Hawthorne high~

do you have any advice for writing dialogue between nick and jay
hi yes this is a thousand years old because I was going to type up something really insightful and informative but
To be completely honest I just. Pay attention to what's in the book. Break down why nick and jay speak to each other the way they do.
Consider, for example, that Jay never once calls Nick by his name and Nick always calls him Gatsby, and basically never to his face once he knows that this is Gatsby he's speaking to. Names are very, very deliberately employed in TGG. Only Tom and Daisy call Nick by his first name, except for Jordan doing it once at the very end, right when Nick has shut her out as 'one of them'. It's almost like this sort of familiarity is only employed by those who feel entitled to use them. Nick calls Tom by his first name not just because they're old college chums but because when he's around Tom and his ilk, he is part of that social strata, whether he feels like it or not. He assimilates even if he's 'not AS rich' or whatever.
Which makes Jay's position as an outsider all the more apparent when he doesn't even feel entitled to use Nick's first name, or even his last name—except for once, when he's in the presence of Meyer Wolfshiem. Again he must exhibit some sort of assimilation as Nick does—except because this is Jay, someone whose every grand gesture is undercut with insecurity, he retains that 'absurd formality' and refers to Nick as Mr. Carraway, even though they're obviously close enough by this point that he can barge into Nick's yard and tell him they're going to lunch together—likely because Nick himself never, not even once, refers to Jay directly as Jay. He reads the phrase, says it in narration, but never out loud calls him Jay. It's always Mr. Gatsby, or later, just Gatsby.
It's almost as though they're acutely aware of this invisible social scaffolding holding up both of their outward appearances with very little security—Jay being most obviously the poor boy playing rich and Nick theoretically playing the Straight Man—and have acknowledged that they must step into this unassuming cage of formality to retain their respective images. As if...if they let it slip...they might just fall.
Now that is something I love to hinge a scene on. What is the precise point where either Nick lets a 'Jay' slip or Jay drops the 'old sport' for just a moment to call after his friend 'Nick'? It doesn't seem important but I guarantee it is, so keep that in mind as you're writing the dialogue between them—when to use 'old sport' and 'Gatsby' and when to let a 'Nick' or a 'Jay' slip in, and if either of them notice at first, or perhaps one notices and not the other and an unwelcome burn rises to his face and he feels the sudden urge to flee but where could he go except back here? All too quickly a friend has come to feel like home and there's nowhere else either of them would run to but each other. I also tend to have Jay say a 'simple' word and then amend it with something 'better'. It's a nicer transition from the period where he was always on edge, chasing Daisy, and would snap out of nowhere, and though his brain is still misfiring like a bad engine, it's no longer with frustration. He's trying to impress 'whoever' (nick) and sound educated. Or he accidentally lets his Midwestern roots show and immediately has to cover it up. "Ope—I mean, oh, dear." Pausing for just a split second to morph how he says the word 'bag' or 'car'. I always write Jay like his brain has autocompleted the sentence before his mouth can finish saying it and he's editing in real time.
Nick, especially in modern times, I always try to add a little Stereotypical Midwestern Flair to. I personally think he spends most of his time back home surrounded by older family members who do indeed sound like extras on Fargo, so he's picked up a lot of things that most men his age really aren't saying, even if he's also actively trying to tone it down now that he's in Da Big Apple. Throw in an 'ope' or an 'ah geez' or a 'spendy' and see how it feels. Usually followed by embarrassment if he notices it, humiliation if someone else (jordan.) has to point it out.
Another thing I note is repeated phrases. Jay uses "look here" so often (usually in conjunction with an 'old sport') and Nick picks it up, using it when he's answering the phone after Jay's death, and never again. His dad uses it, too, and then Tom uses it at the end as if to piss Nick off further.
This might not be applicable to Nick and Jay dialogue, but Nick in general is very good at sounding disinterested because he's a prat and I want him dead. Sorry. That was harsh. He's a prat and I want him severely inconvenienced. But either way, if he's talking to someone you know he doesn't want to talk to (usually a woman), keep up those one word answers. His ass loves a "Really." fuck off nick
To me, personally, I think Nick didn't come from a family where 'I love you' was a very highly regarded/used phrase, at least not out loud, whereas Jay would, if given the chance, say it quite often, leading to some uncomfortable angst at times if Nick doesn't know how much that phrase means to Jay. And it's a testament to where Jay's mind was when Daisy told him out loud that she loved him and he said nothing.
This is about all I can think of right now.

Ngl,,,,, I have a love-hate relationship with Tobias (Tattersall) and Skye Hawthorne
Like it's not even funny how much I absolutely adore and DESPISE them 😭
With Skye, it's mostly hate because she's the reason the boys have such unresolved Mommy Issues 💀 At the very least, I'm happy Grayson can find a much healthier mother figure in Acacia it's one of the reasons I'm so excited for The Grandest Game because I wanna see their relationship develop!
But at the same time this woman is fascinating in terms of characterization. I kinda wished JLB did more with Skye, but for the most part, I enjoyed Skye's characterization in the OG trilogy because of how consistent her characterization's been. (We can at least give Skye credit for giving the iconic line “Do you know what the difference is between Millions and Billions, Ava? Because at a certain point, it's not about the money” /hj)
With Tobias.... Potentially controversial take, but I LOVE his character sm.
Like yes, what he said to Grayson and Jameson in their respective flashback sequences (yes, including the one with Emily in the treehouse) was messed up. Telling Grayson that it was going to be him, and telling Jameson he was ordinary is very much fucked up for him to say to them. Although, in my opinion, the Jameson thing felt kind of out of nowhere because it wasn't really there in the OG trilogy
However, like with Skye, I am fascinated by the way JLB had characterized him. The fact that he was loyal to Alice, apologized to Zara and Skye in the letter of what was supposed to be their game, and cared about his grandsons enough to make them better men than he'll ever be. Fucked up as the man may be, you can tell he had his moments where he genuinely cared as a person. (I especially liked that he had a soft spot for Xander and Rebecca, because that needs to be discussed more often!!)
I'm honestly hoping JLB stays true to Tobias' character if he ever makes an appearance in TGG via flashbacks or character mentions because what got me so hooked on this serious (other than Grayson) was from how RIDICULOUSLY invested I was in this manipulative, loyal, machiavellian old texan man.
