I commissioned Tex to draw a scene from a fic I wrote--because, well, who doesn’t enjoy more alive Doc Hudson? This is so wonderful. <333 I love the detail of their eyes reflected on their hoods, Lightning’s perfect curves and his cute spoiler. The shading detail on Doc’s grill is magnificent--there’s so much depth to it. And this is gonna sound dumb, but I really like that bit where the grass meets the pavement? I dunno, it’s great. And good heavens, Lightning’s pouty face. XDDD There’s so much detail in this, and a full background and everything! :OOO Have I mentioned in this post yet that I love you????????

"Control," Doc reminds him, but Lightning's past the point of responding even recalcitrantly. He's pure, raw force, swinging around the turns, every atom blazing forward. There's nothing left for anything but power and speed. It's terrible but beautiful, but terrible.

Lightning leaves the track gasping for breath and on the verge of tears and absolutely every other part of him left on the asphalt behind him. The forklift posting the times does a double-take.

Doc's not thinking about those, though.

"Come here," Doc says, but Lightning is as insensate now as he was at 200 miles an hour. He mumbles something Doc finds incomprehensible, only willing to wheel himself in any direction but Doc's.

Lightning closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, but immediately lets it out, sharp, and continues to dance away. 'Calm' isn't really an available gear after a run like his.

"Come here," Doc repeats, and this time all but herds Lightning in the appropriate direction.

"Oh, stop," Lightning mutters, as he shies away from Doc's bumper taps. "I can drive myself, Dad." But the second Doc stops prodding Lightning stops moving, so Doc keeps on.

Dad, huh? Doc mulls this over. Interesting choice, Mr. I-Can-Drive-Myself. The way it had slipped out, Lightning probably didn't even realize. Certainly, he won't remember.

That train of thought stretches long across the circus that is the Florida Speedway, but eventually they end up at Doc's trailer, quiet and plain-painted and unassuming.

They don't talk much. First it's just Lightning muttering incoherence, as far as Doc's concerned--likely a continuation of some long epic he's been self-narrating for the past year or so. Then genuine silence. Lightning dozes, waking long enough between bouts to look extremely annoyed with himself.

On a scale of one to Lightning McQueen, how much do you love Cruz?

This is literally the cutest question I’ve ever been asked!!! Also, I appreciate you  asking for and reading my posts about my love for Cruz. It really makes me happy to know that someone cares about my love for her and Lightning! 

(Long story short: I was at an event at my church so I’m answering this really late, hope you don’t mind). Also, this will contain Cars 3 spoilers.

Anyway, on a scale of one to Lightning McQueen, I have to say that I love Cruz more when she is with Lightning. And by that, I don’t mean a romantic relationship. I mean a mentor/mentee, student/teacher,  or father/daughter relationship. These two are the main reason why I’m a Cars fan to begin with. They dragged me into hillbilly hell with no mercy! The dynamic between them just makes my heart flutter every time. I could literally ramble on and on about how much I love these two, but to save you from a long-winded answer, I’m going to share a few of my favorite moments and why they mean so much to me. (I couldn’t get pics for every scene in the movie, just the ones I love the most).

First Meeting

First impressions are really important. I love this scene because Cruz was really professional. Instead of acting like a crazed fangirl, she used her training techniques through reverse psychology and allowed Lightning to see her do her job to the best of her ability. I wrote a whole chapter on this in one of my fanfics, but I bet she was bubbling with excitement on the inside, but she had to keep it professional. Her boss was there after all. I also love how Lightning was trying to act suave even though Cruz called him old on several occasions. It’s like the man doesn’t want to accept the fact that he’s getting up there in age. 

Beach Training

Don’t even get me started on this scene!!!! This scene is my favorite one in the entire movie! I love how Lightning keeps teaching Cruz even though she is constantly messing up. That’s amazing to me because even though he’s annoyed with her, he still tries to prevent her from making the same mistakes. Also, some of the best lines were in this scene:

“The beach ate me!”

“Life’s a beach and then you drive.”

“That is great self-motivation! Did you come up with that?”

“You’re brittle like a fossil.”

“I didn’t want to hit a crab! What? It was cute!”

“And all of the crabbies have gone night night!”

To me, this scene sets up the relationship between them. This marks the first time that they ever raced against each other, the first time Lightning gets to be a teacher (and the best thing about that is, he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it), and its the first time we get to see a merge between the old generation (getting those tires dirty) and the new generation (this is nothing like the simulator). 

Thomasville 

This scene is really touching to me. This was right after Cruz vented to Lightning about her broken dreams (btw, I adore that scene too). I love this moment because Lightning just takes Cruz under his wing and allows her to immerse herself within Doc’s past. Since Doc was very close to Lightning and was an important factor in his life, it was amazing to see that Lightning allowed Cruz to share in the most personal aspect of who he is as a racer. We also find out that Cruz is also a racing guru considering that she knows Louise. My favorite part of their visit to Thomasville was the lap that they took on Doc’s home track. I love how Lightning just breaks into the place to show Cruz where Doc raced while he was in his prime. He even invites her to take the lap with him instead of just telling her to stay there while he took the lap himself. Seeing them drift along the track together was just the most amazing aspect of the movie for me. 

The Florida 500

It’s funny, but I used to hate this part of the movie. At first, I was upset that Lightning didn’t get to beat Storm himself. I thought that this scene was a cop out because Pixar didn’t want to give us a predictable ending. After watching it a few times and realizing the deeper meaning behind Lightning giving up his last chance for Cruz’s first chance, this scene became a core reason of why I love their relationship so much. I just love how selfless Lightning was in allowing Cruz to get her shot back after she blew it the first time. It just amazed me to see how much Lightning grew as a character and seeing him be Cruz’s crew chief was so fun to watch. Especially the parts where he’s telling Smokey what to say:

“Tell her she’s a fluffy cloud.”

Smokey: “What? No!”

Lightning: “Smokey TELL HER!”

To see him step into that role of being a mentor just as Doc was to him, it fills me with happiness every time. 

Overall, (to give a short answer to your question) I adore Cruz even more once Lightning is involved. Their relationship is definitely my aesthetic.Seeing those two together makes me the happiest person in the world! I LOVE LIGHTING AND CRUZ!!!!!!!!

i imagine she didnt have many possessions with ego at all, pretty much the bare essentials except for the occasional gift from him (idk a plant? maybe)

with the guardians tho, her favorite possession is one of drax’s knives/daggers. it’s a smaller one that he got for her planetside while refueling and although she feels she’ll never really need it, she loves that it’s a gift from her new friend.

i like to think peter also gave her one of his necklaces for maybe her birthday because “that’s a thing we humans celebrate” and she LOVES it (i want them to have a sibling relationship ok......) because she’s never really had jewelry before

Can I get a mini essay on what made you ship Lightning and Cal and why you love them so much?

There’s just something about their interactions that makes it easy to see them as a ship. When I see them together on the screen, like in the “good comeback, Cal” scene, it’s not hard to picture/hear Lighting saying “Love ya, Cal!” as he drives away.

Given Lightning’s good friendship with the guys at Dinoco, it makes sense for Cal and Lightning to be close. Mr. Dinoco himself adores Lightning, more than he does Cal, even to the point where he knows Lightning on a personal level, so of course Lightning’s gonna know the Dinoco racer pretty well, too.

This is like a personal headcanon: I can also see Cal as being a sweet, shy and almost passive person, so he’d be more than happy to have Lightning as a solid friend who he can constantly hang around with. Someone who doesn’t just see him as a celebrity since he’s the new face of Dinoco, and someone who can include him and won’t hesitate to come up ideas for fun or to pass time when Cal can’t think of anything and just keeps saying “I don’t know, what do YOU want to do?”

And of course constantly hanging around your best/closest friend CAN lead to falling in love with one another. People on twitter prove it all the time when they share their “date your best friend” tweets.

What are some new (or old) headcanons for your baby racecar that you haven't shared yet?

I TEND TO EITHER MAKE THIS STUFF UP ON THE FLY OR SHARE IT PRETTY IMMEDIATELY, BEFORE MY SENSE OF MY OWN SUPERFLUITY CAN SHUT ME UP. But here are some HCs I’ve used that I don’t know that I’ve ever stated outright!

Seven HCs for seven championships. 😎

1. Doesn’t know pop culture. He hasn’t seen many movies; the ones he’s seen, he’s watched socially. The music he likes is also more about the associations he has with it (is it track music? Do his friends listen to this genre?) than the music itself; he’s not going to make plans to go to a concert for a specific artist or anything—though he’s been to a few music festivals, either by special invitation or contractual obligation.

Part of it is being a racer, and from Day 1 having a very regimented way of spending his time and focus that’s really different from your normal car upbringing in that formative first year—but other racers definitely make the time, so it’s not just that.

Of course, Radiator Springs itself isn’t exactly a pop culture mecca… When Toy Car Story 3 came out in 2010 a number of Piston Cup racers were invited to the premiere, and Lightning was like, “THERE’S THREE? BUT THE FIRST ONE JUST CAME OUT. I SAW IT AT THE DRIVE-IN.” And Cal was just like… “Well, first of all, that movie came out in 1995.”

2. Doesn’t watch his own racing footage. He’s not embarrassed by it, in the sense that he’d want to pick apart all his moves or catalog his mistakes or cringe at the weird faces his makes while racing. Like, whatever. He just doesn’t see the point; he was there. Doc still made him watch a few times, though—said something about giving him the opportunity to see what other people saw in him. Absolutely no commitment to Doc’s legacy could keep him watching that stuff after Doc wasn’t there to force him, though.

It wasn’t until Smokey started talking about things he couldn’t even see in himself that he ever thought about it again. It was Thomasville; it was Smokey; Lightning was already primed to be thinking about Doc. But that memory shot through him like a livewire. He could feel that all the way to the next morning, Thomasville under his tires once more.

3. Acrobatic racing style. (If cars could do backflips he’d totally Carl Edwards it.) Compared to some of the other racers, his downforce isn’t super great (no splitter), so he makes up for it by going in completely the other direction. Commentators on a morning talk show actually debated once whether the time Lightning spent in the air during a race had any effect on his ability to keep tires fresher longer. The discussion was inconclusive.

Lightning’s not known for being a particularly aggressive racer (he’ll side draft the crap out of you but never touch you. He won’t push you up the track; he’s not gonna bump you; and if you come for him, he’ll probably back down… but also somehow end up ahead of you again).

But he’s exceptionally good at maneuvering with at least the appearance of control, especially in chaos situations where no car should technically have any. He’ll race loose and risky all day, and the faster the track, the better he is at it. He’s the master of avoiding big wrecks and pileups. 

But when you’re already loose-handling, and you’re already going faster and harder than you can reasonably manage, and then a back tire goes out… well.

4. Has trouble focusing. Or focusing appropriately, as the case may be. It’s hyperfocus or nothing, and switching between the two (or between different hyperfoci) is really hard for him. In the pre-Rusteze days, at Smell Swell, he was actually told that if he couldn’t pull it together, then there was no career for him in racing. And, well, that was unacceptable, so Lightning made a conscious effort to figure this crap out and  develop the coping strategies and find the exercises/[iconic] mantras he needed.

This is still a struggle sometimes, even now, but in 2006 he felt like pulling this off was pre~tty impressive. Of course, there’s being proud of yourself and then there’s pure egotism, haha, and it did not actually occur to Lightning that there could possibly be more than one aspect of your self-awareness/self-presentation that one might need to work on, maybe. He passed his test! So he must be perfect, right? ;P

5. Doesn’t love water. He just doesn’t. He doesn’t like the idea of being wet, he doesn’t like splashing, and he definitely doesn’t want to be submerged. Freshwater, saltwater, moving water, still water… He doesn’t like any of it. It seems unsanitary and corrosive and also, it’s wet. He feels like this is a completely reasonable thing for a car to not like—they’re metal! They have batteries! Their engines require ignition!—but Cal freedives, and even Bobby likes to jetski, so.

6. Loves Sally. I know, BIG NEWSFLASH, lol. But Lightning loves her the way he did when they were first falling in love—that all-consuming, fluttery, insistent infatuation. That first-moments feeling never goes away; that spark, that thing that’s supposed to be sharp and fleeting and only experienced in small doses—that’s where he lives, all of the time, every moment. It’s flashbulb love, eidetic emotion. The only thing that’s different now from then is the additional layers of inflection and affection that have since joined it. The calm love, the comfortable love, the teasing love, and the ‘I know the post office is 20 miles from here but can you mail this for me, Lightning? thanks’ love. It’s all there, all of the time. Because that’s how Lightning loves things.

7. Conceptually does not understand salad.

Speaking of my own superfluity… tl;dr, probably. 😬 But I love him.

This is literally the best assignment I have ever received! I actually made an entire appreciation post for Cruz with 10 reasons why I love her, (you can read it here if you want), but I’d be happy to restate those reasons again!

Why I adore Cruz Ramirez

Origins

Before I delve into the various reasons of why I adore this precious banana babe, I must make a small confession: I was never a Cars fan until I saw Cars 3. I was only seven years old when the first movie came out in 2006 and I vaguely remember my exact reaction to it. The only scene that I loved was the neon lights display in Radiator Springs (I don’t know the exact name, but the “Life Could Be Dream” song is very enchanting by the way). Lightning McQueen’s attitude in the first film was a major turn off for me. I was disappointed with his asinine behavior and don’t even get me started on Cars 2! With that being said, Cars was on the back burner in terms of my personal interests. All of that changed when the teaser for Cars 3 dropped in November of last year.I vividly remember me clutching my chest at the sight of Lightning barrel rolling in slow motion. The horrific crash sequence sent my soul into an emotional spiral (it came up as an ad on YouTube that I couldn’t skip). I just knew that I had to see this movie. I desperately wanted to know how Lightning would come back from a traumatizing experience like that.

Cruz and Cristela

Just when I thought that I couldn’t get any more interested in this film, Cruz Ramirez came rolling into my heart.Cruz was the bridge that led me to become a Cristela Alonzo fan. After I saw a brief Cars 3 interview, I knew I had to do some research on her. I saw every episode of her TV series “Cristela,” on Netflix and it always had me in tears of joy. I also saw her stand up comedy special, “Lower Classy” and I was in stitches by the time it was over. When I heard that she was playing Cruz, it was an automatic bonus for me. At first, I thought Cruz would be that annoying character who was extremely optimistic about every situation and had absolutely no flaws. I thought she was going to be this two- dimensional “Mary Sue” with no character arc. After she got vulnerable with Lightning and told him about her racing dreams, I instantly saw myself in her character. 

My Reflection

It was like staring into a mirror. In that moment, I realized that I had a serious issue with self-doubt. Just as Cruz lacked the self-confidence to pursue her dreams, I have the same problem when it comes to seeing myself in a positive light. On another note (one that is not often mentioned),Cruz is a Latina car. When she stated that none of the other racers “looked like her,” I immediately recognized the underlying meaning behind that. I am an African American woman. I’m not trying to play the race card here, but I do understand the struggle of being placed in an environment where no one looks like you or understands your struggle of being a minority in America (I currently go to a predominantly white college). 

Yes, I’ve had some challenges in regards to racism and I know all too well the feeling of not having the same opportunities as others. I also believe that being a woman in general can be challenging, especially since we aren’t exactly considered equal to men in certain aspects. I just appreciate Pixar for their willingness to be real in that way. I love that they integrated Cristela’s story with Cruz’s character. It helped me to relate to her on a deeper and more personal level. Cruz just adds such heart to the Cars franchise and she helped me to realize that even if I come from a broken background (speaking in terms of family), I can still make a difference and achieve my dreams.

Like Father, Like Daughter

 That scene alone is one of the major reasons why I love Cruz. I also ADORE her relationship with Lightning. At first, I didn’t appreciate Cruz giving Lightning the “old man training style” (although, I did enjoy the Zumba!), but I began to enjoy their chemistry once they got to train on Fireball Beach. That scene is one of my favorite scenes in the movie because Lightning is teaching Cruz some techniques without even realizing it! Yeah he got annoyed at her for messing up so many times, but he was determined to help her get it right. Once Cruz got vulnerable (after Lightning yelled at her) about her shattered dreams, their relationship got so much deeper! I also love how Lightning just took Cruz under his wing (or tire), and allowed her to learn about Doc’s past and gain some racing techniques along with him. The Florida 500 scene always tugs at my heart strings!!! I could go on and on about it, but I JUST LOVE how Lightning selflessly gave Cruz her first shot at becoming a racer. This touched my heart because he was there for her and he realized that she was important and that she had potential. Cruz also helped Lightning to realize that he was inspiring people to dream big. I just love the dynamic between them and I gush every time I see Lightning acting like a dad and Cruz just being the precious daughter that she is.

Cutie Pie

For this section, I’m just going to make a list of all the cute aspects of Cruz that I LOVE!!!!! 

Her bubbly personality just brings a smile to my face all the time!

Speaking of smiles, she has the cutest smile EVER!

Conclusion

If that wasn’t enough proof for you, let me just say that I LOVE CRUZ RAMIREZ! What else can I possibly say? She dragged me into hillbilly hell with no mercy, she is the sweetest character in the world, she is a direct reflection of me, and she motivates me to work hard and push through the pain. I may abuse her emotionally in my fan fictions, but I still love her so much!
