Despite Hanzo's competence, the Shimadas chose to hire a new bodyguard for the heirs. The elders found the one they wanted: an American mercenary so deadly some called him a demon. He was remarkably skilled, insolent, and above all mysterious. Genji, of course, liked him right away, but Hanzo had his doubts.

2. Hi there! I've been trying to find this fic to re-read for a while now and I'm hoping that someone else recognizes it (and that it's not deleted!)

I believe it was in the "LWJ marries the Yiling Patriarch" category and there was a Yiling Wei sect or something similar (although it's been a very long time and I don't recall anyone else actually being in the sect so I could be wrong on either/both counts). WWX often went back and forth between the Burial Mounds and Baoshan Sanren's mountain via portal (?) as they were trying to cure Lan Yi of her spiritual malady (?). Last I still remember it was a WIP, and one of the little details that sticks in my mind was that BSSR had gotten WWX doing decorative knotwork to keep his hands busy, so the palace had incredibly intricate pieces, like, everywhere, and he often gifted it to people.

Am I getting too predictable if I ask for the Director's Cut of Our Heads Are Just Houses??

Hah, I just answered a little bit for salt, who asked about a specific scene, but more generally ummmm. I have these notes I wrote while I was working on the fic that give a little bit of info about what’s going on in the background that Hanzo’s not seeing or didn’t make it into the general exposition.

Probably the biggest piece of it that I think is not explicit in the fic (I mean it’s there but never just outright stated) is that the dragons are why Jesse and Hanzo respond so differently to the brainwashing. Part of the suppression of his memories is Hanzo himself kind of subconsciously resisting because he knows it’s gonna be traumatic, but part of it’s that Talon cut him off from his dragons and his connection to them is such a core part of who he is as a person. 

When I was thinking about, you know, what would be the thing that made Hanzo Hanzo, like what would be the thing that could bring him back to himself, I was torn between “dragons” and “remembering killing Genji,” so I made it both at once. Which felt awfully cruel, actually, to link his understanding of his own identity to that act. There are Reasons this fic was so hard to write, hah.

I simply cannot see a title like "There's An Octopus In My Attic" and not wonder what in the world is going on in that WIP.

Yes, that actually isn’t fanfiction. It was a quick idea that I had at work while looking at job folders. The job in question had ductwork in the attic, similar to this (and picture below) and I thought that with the black wrapping and poor lighting in the attic, it could almost look like an octopus. 

So I jotted down a few notes, a basic story, and got that going. When I’m not quite so busy I might work more on it, finish breaking down the pages and notes for drawing, do the art, and maybe see what becomes of it.

The closest would be the Gasoline and Gunsmoke series, not that I’ve been getting into car chases, but um. Driving fast? I did lots of driving fast, with whatever internal combustion fueled thing I could get my hands on, when I was younger and stupider.

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

cyberninja and pacrim, though everyone knows about those. I started a jesse pov b-side to There Are Dangerous Things, and there are two versions, and I hate both. I don’t know if I’ll abandon that, but I think the moment has kind of passed for that story. 

and like everyone else I have a canon verse getting together fic, except I’ll never finish that, just pick at it forever.

I stay thinking about that pretty deadly au I mentioned months and months ago, but it would be so looong and I’m a wuss.

Mmmmm not really, the closest i can come to saying yes is that some of the relationship dynamics i write are relationship goals for me, the whole unconditional support and love even through the rough patches and stuff like that

I know I already answered this one but i got another fic that I can’t wait to pick back up thats some good old hurt/comfort that revolves around Jesse losing his arm and having bad memories crop up about that, culminating with a horrible nightmare that Hanzo helps him through

I would still love to see a full Pacific Rim Mchan AU, multichapter, 80k+, angst, action, character growth and relationship building and all that good shit

McCree waits, trying to discern whether he will be blown off or pleasantly surprised. Then Hanzo glares, and a muscle flexes in his neck as he clenches his jaw. “Is this a game to you?” he asks coldly.

SO THIS SCENE.

This scene was a pain in my ass. 

Here we have them after they did their fake-dating kiss--that trope of kissing to hide the real reason that they were somewhere they weren’t supposed to be. From McCree’s point of view, he’s spent awhile pining, and the last couple of days really pining, and then an hour ago Hanzo up and kisses him in a way that he thinks might not have been just for the mission. And he tries to get it to happen again without actually admitting his feelings, because he doesn’t have any proof that Hanzo actually likes him and he’s very aware he could just be hoping for something that’s not there. 

AAO was originally conceived as a one-shot, which quickly become not-a-one-shot, but even months later I still had this very particular image of McCree getting stuck in a losing streak of bets and betting Hanzo wouldn’t kiss him. Originally, Hanzo would kiss him and walk off, but that wasn’t going to work for a bigger fic. Additionally, I was really aware of the fact that other fics I’d written--and in the fandom as a whole--it was a common theme for Hanzo to be the one to do something wrong that endangered their fledgling relationship, or to walk away/leave McCree hanging otherwise, and I wanted to turn it around so that it was McCree who did something instead. The blame was on both of them in the end, at least a bit, but nonetheless, I wanted the triggering factor to be McCree. 

And I struggled. 

I wasn’t fully satisfied with this scene even when I published it, and looking back I’m still not. Writing arguments is a pain because you have to toe that line between a logical progression/escalation and the illogical emotional aspect, and make the reactions believable and play off each other. I struggle with that a lot if I don’t already have a perfect image in my head of how it would be. So this one was . . . something as a result. :V

I saw you had posted about a Pretty Deadly AU, and I'd love to hear more about it because Pretty Deadly is excellent and I'd bet you'd be able to do some really great things with the concepts!

the teal deer is that in this AU,  Jesse is Ginny and Deadeye is him reaping souls in his capacity as a child of Death.

The long answer is that I’m fudging the details, per usual, and that there’s this whole thing I’m trying not to elaborate too heavily on, but anyway: Jesse’s mother is Death’s lover, but she’s more like a Persephone figure, not in the getting kidnapped way but in the way that she leaves Death to be reincarnated into the mortal world for periods of time because she doesn’t belong in the underworld, not really. And sometimes, Death goes to visit her anyway, and sometimes, there is a child.

All of Death’s other children accept their positions as reapers, but not Jesse. Jesse was angry when Death took his mother away, and rejected his position as a reaper and is living out his mortal life to avoid having to face his father and his duty for as long as possible.

Things proceed mostly as they do in canon–Jesse falls in with Deadlock, Jesse is picked up by Blackwatch, Jesse leaves just before the fall of Overwatch. Jesse has uncanny aim and can do things that don’t seem possible with a single action six shooter. If anyone suspects something is different about him, they can’t prove anything. (Genji, who’s made a pact with an ineffable, incomprehensible spirit beast, knows better than every scientist in Overwatch what must be different about Jesse, but he doesn’t care and no one ever asks him. Whatever his friend is, he’s his friend and he can have his secrets.)

Jesse finds himself uniquely suited to mercenary work, and that goes as well as could be expected, until the Recall and his old life comes knocking. And there are old faces and new faces–including one face he’d fully expected to personally kick into the river styx–Hanzo Shimada. But instead of seeking vengeance, Genji is looking for healing and reconcile, and, well, isn’t not really Jesse’s place to get in the middle of that, is it?

but anyway, it’s mostly a pretty deadly thing, but with a heaping dose of greek mythology and american folklore and a teensy dash of miriam black and abhorsen. Like, I had fun trying to make the shimada dragons sci-fi so now I’m trying to make Deadeye fantasy.

McCree survives by knowing which rules to break and which to obey and when to do the opposite of what he usually does. Dangerous things stay dangerous because they can change - he knows this all too well.

Jesse is in a large, open room with a high ceiling full of exposed wooden beams and what looks like straw mats spread out on the floor.  Some of the walls are solid, others are made of paper.  Words come to Jesse to unbidden like memories that aren’t his own.  Dojo.  Tatami.  Shoji.  The characters on the pillars are kanji.    

Jesse is in Japan.  Parts of him, anyway.

There are people lingering along the edges of the room.  There are two figures in the center, one of them older with his eyes flashing eerie red, black hair greying at his temples.  In front of him is a boy about Jesse’s age— seventeen.  Eighteen, maybe.  He’s kneeling with his eyes downcast, long hair pulled up into a messy bun, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.  His clothes are hanging down off his left shoulder to expose an intricate tattoo, dragons and storm clouds and lightning in blue and grey and gold.  

He’s beautiful like nothing Jesse has ever seen, a tangle of contradictions.  He looks delicate.

He looks powerful.

He’s breathtaking and he’s afraid and oh, fuck.

He’s Jesse’s.

The table seems endless stretched between them; polished wood, incense filling the room with smoke, ceremonial cups of sake. Jesse stares across the length of it, his gaze locked on Hanzo with an intensity usually reserved for the hunt, except he’s never been interested in any prey the way he is now; voraciously.

Savagely.

Teeth curve long out of his jaw, and his body rolls into the half-shift all on its own. Ears pricked, tail sprouting from the base of his spine, eyes lit up red. Hanzo is doing no better.

His eyes are black, pupils blown wide, nothing but a thin ring of gold set in an impossibly dark sclera. Jesse watches Hanzo’s horns lengthen, watches his claws extend. Watches his cheeks turn red, even more pronounced against the blue of his skin.

Everything goes sideways, as Jesse always expected it would.

It just doesn’t go sideways the way he expected.

Jesse had been ready for a fight.

Cassidy takes a new monster hunting contract. It's pretty decent as contracts go: the pay is good, the perks even better, and he's got two competent companions to fight at his side when the monsters come.

Then a third companion arrives and ruins everything.

“You can’t see me,” a deep honeyed voice rumbles from above, a good few feet above, Hanzo guesses.

“I—“

Hanzo’s reply is drowned out when the hunting party crashes through the foliage behind him and the screaming begins.

Ooh, favorite is a little hard to pick. Armadillo-cree is super fluffy and adorable and I love it, but I think Our Heads Are Just Houses is probably my actual favorite. I'm not sure what I was expecting going in (I read the first chapter on Tumblr), but it definitely wasn't the couple chapters of beautifully creepy psychological suspense. That last chapter was such a great rollercoaster of feels that every time I go back into that tab to FINALLY leave a comment, I end up reading those last

(I didn't have enough room! D:) anyway ... those last couple of scenes, and I'm just so overwhelmed again that now I just can't write a comment that makes any damn sense. It's just such a lovely, unexpected story.

OH MAN. Hah, I really wasn’t expecting that one to be anybody’s favorite because it was just such a strange, experimental thing to write that somehow turned into like stealth identity angst/character study? I don’t even know how to tag/characterize that fic, and I wrote it, lol. And parts of the fic felt outright rude of me to write, but like, honestly I’m still pretty proud of this creepy, feelings-heavy thing I wrote, so I am still really grateful that you enjoyed it! 

PS The dog is my favorite character.

oh most definitely both. but it won’t ever seem ridiculous or ooc, i promise. i take building a consistent literary atmosphere very seriously and will do my best to upkeep the gritty realism meets bildungsroman afterschool special vibe i got going on.

but… i also want to have fun with this fic! its my first long, multi-chapter fic in like, a decade. i want to really push the story and my writing by using some tropes i love and love to laugh at, but do so subtly and with a lot of affection for fandom and the weird shit we consume.

i mean, the fic centers on one major trope that would end up on the aforementioned “bad”-tropes-im-including list: soulmarks. how ive incorporated them so far is a good indicator for how ill approach any and all tropes. because no matter what writing antics i pull, i will always bring it back to asking myself am i doing right by the world im building and the characters im developing. with this soulmark example specifically, like, they are these strange magical things to us but they would be pretty unremarkable to the people in the verse, because theyre used to it and its kinda boring to them tbh? and then you gotta add on character perspectives. so like, my wife @calciseptine is also writing a soulmark au and while she similarly takes on a quotidian approach to worldbuilding, yuuri cares A LOT about his mark, who his soulmate is, and (while not directly addressed) his own insecurity about being loved. but with hot oil spit and jesse? jesse’s mark takes a backseat to thinking about where he’s getting his next meal and (for the time being) his relationship with bad guy craig. he will think about it, for sure, but for him the biggest thing is just the inconvenience of the mark’s location and having to wear a glove all the time.

tl;dr: i promise i wont wreck my fic for the lols... but by god. if i can fit in fake dating somewhere IMMA DO IT.
