🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

It really depends! I did a ton of research on American Sign Language in order to make sure that I was depicting it correctly as Yuyan Hand Language (the thing with the English alphabet of ASL versus the Chinese characters that ATLA uses threw me for a hot minute, until I decided to just say “fuckit, handwave”), but for some of DotY I just kind of winged it. Generally, if I have a worldbuilding question, I’ll check the wiki first, then if I can’t find (or am not satisfied with) an answer there, I’ll do some googling for a plausible real-world equivalent. If I find myself going too far down a rabbit hole, then I’ll cut myself off and be like “okay, time to just make it up”. I once lost an entire writing day trying to find a name for the shoulder pads on Fire Nation armor, and after that I decided that I had to make the conscious effort not to sink too much time into research.

🦅 Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?

Again, it depends! DotY as a series was very roughly outlined (basically a page in the Plot section of the DotY OneNote notebook titled “Series Masterlist” that listed the title of each installment, one sentence of what it was going to cover, and the episode it was tagged to or if it was Prologue or Epilogue), but each installment was pantsed for the most part. My current WIP requires a bit more planning, since I have over 125 years of backstory to rough out before I can get to the main plot.

Oh heck, can I actually think of 5 of these?? Okay, let’s see:

I’m apparently excellent at portraying various disabilities, which is very gratifying to hear from the people who actually have the disabilities that I’m portraying

I’ve spent 20+ years honing my craft, and it fucking shows

I can put something down to focus on other things, and then come back and finish, which is something I’ve only just learned about myself

My sense of drama in the little things is apparently impeccable (for example, Sokka’s observation of Zuko’s shaking hands in Pursuit)(snipers are trained to have incredibly steady hands)

Posting that random one-shot AU (Reconnaissance) was an incredibly good decision on my part

Terrorism, without a doubt. I was so nervous to post it, and even writing it was pretty fraught, because I don’t usually do body-horror. Yeah, maybe it’s body-horror lite, but it’s still more than I’d ever written before that point.

Oy vey 😅 okay, um, well according to the majority of my comments, I have a really good grasp of characterization, which is honestly kind of cool now that I think about it!

Run-on sentences 😠 I ramble, and with characters like Sokka and Zuko I can let it go a little bit, but for the most part I’m constantly trying to stop using more than two commas in a sentence. Heck, I just did it!

🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?

Writing Zuko’s thoughts and observations during FUBAR was so fucking funny. Just, how much can Zuko (I) roast this absolute bootlicking maniac and his overcompensating fortress? I still giggle every time I reread it. Also, Sokka’s sleep-deprived rambling during Pursuit— I pretty much just took the brakes off of my tendency for run-on sentences and let it rip.

I’m getting there— I spent all day yesterday in bed either sleeping or scrolling with my latest YouTube obsession autoplaying on the Roku, and I actually spent the majority of today at work prepping for a presentation I need to give on Sunday. I’m hoping to be fully better on Sunday for that, or at least at the point that with enough cold medicine, I can function long enough to set up for Religious School, give my presentation, process and file the tutoring paperwork that my madrichim generate, and put together an oneg plate for next Friday before I crash. If I absolutely have to, I can punt about half that list over to Monday, but I’d really rather not, because Monday has its own to-do list.

I NEED to be better by 9pm Monday, because I am getting up at 4:30am Tuesday morning to flap my way south for the turkey holiday (is it cannibalism if a family of penguins eat a turkey??) and I refuse to be sick on my vacation.
