Vijftig jaar geleden: eerste optreden van Tetsu Yamauchi met The Faces

The Faces released their final album, Ooh La La, in 1973, but that wasn't the band's last attempt at recording an LP. That came in January 1975, when their final lineup of Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan, Tetsu Yamauchi and Kenney Jones recorded four songs for what was supposed to be their final album, but which was unfortunately scrapped. But what if the Faces had released a fifth album?
To answer that, I've put those four songs together with assorted singles and b-sides from the 1973/75 era, in order to create an album that can sit comfortably in their discography just after Ooh La La. Here's what I ended up with, as seen over at The Reconstructor:
FACES - OPEN TO IDEAS (1975)
You Can Make Me Dance, Sing, or Anything (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar) As Long as You Tell Him (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar) Gettin' Hungry (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar) Rock Me (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar) Pool Hall Richard (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar) Jodie (The Mercury Collection) Hi Heel Sneakers/Everybody Needs Somebody to Love (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar) Open to Ideas (Five Guys Walk Into a Bar)

Album Number Four Hundred Sixty Eight. “Heartbreaker” is the sixth and final studio album by the English rock band #free #freeband , that provided them with one of their most successful singles, "Wishing Well". It was recorded in late 1972 after bassist #andyfraser had left the band and while guitarist #paulkossoff was ailing from an addiction to Mandrax (#quaaludes ) and features a different line up from previous albums. #tetsuyamauchi was brought in to replace Fraser, while #johnrabbitbundrick became the band's keyboard player to compensate for the increasingly unreliable Kossoff (singer #paulrodgers played keyboards on the previous album 1972 Free at Last). Both Yamauchi and Bundrick had played with Kossoff and drummer #simonkirke on the album Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu & Rabbit during that period in late 1971 when Free had broken up for the first time. Also, several other musicians were used on the album. The album was co-produced by #andyjohns as well as Free themselves. My copy is on #islandrecords - SW 9324 The album was, by Free's standards, a huge success. It became their third top-ten album in the UK (reaching #9), and reached No. 47 in America, which was also a considerable success for the band. Also, the single release "#wishingwell " became their third-most successful single, reaching No. 7. It is widely regarded as one of their definitive songs. Despite the success of the album and impending tour of America, it finally became apparent that the band had passed the point of no return. Kossoff being credited as an additional musician came as a shock to the entire band. #rockandroll #theseventies #heartbreaker https://www.instagram.com/p/CoP1ZJbuqxa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tetsu Yamauchi Turns 75
Tetsu Yamauchi is a bridge as much as a bassist.
He followed Andy Fraser in Free and Ronnie Lane in Faces and helped both bands extend their careers on Heartbreaker with the former and Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners with the latter.
Retired from the music business for more 20 years and back in his native Japan, Tetsu lives a quiet live as he turns 75 today, Oct. 21, 2021. But he made some big noise with a couple of big bands for a few cacophonous years in the mid-1970s.
Domo arigato, dude.

Fast rising stars in Japanese rock 1971!! - I'm 4th from the top, photo left. Thanks to Tsuyoshi Nishimura for finding this archival clipping. Top of the photos is Mickey Curtis's band Samurai just back in Japan from working extensively in Europe, with the rhythm section of Tetsu Yamauchi and Yujin Harada. I would work with all three of those talented musicians that year.
