"H-HEY WAIT!" She had no time to react, being scooped up by Jowi and rushed toward NERV HQ's med bay. "WHAT ARE YOU, NUTS?! PUT ME DOWN! I CAN WALK FOR MYSELF!!"

A sour expression crossed Asuka's face. She hated being scolded, especially by those her own age. Despite the sour expression and clear disregard for him, she listened to him. She glanced away in guilt, her pout even more pouty as he lectured her on actually listening to others.

"I don't really care about anyone other than myself," she muttered softly. "Other people have always just disappointed me."

She hoped he hadn't heard that, because admitting it aloud made her that much more aware of how pathetic she was. "Sure, fine. You're the best at hand-to-hand," she added. "Sorry."

Her appetite was gone now.

“I’m just telling you about my interests. And if you would just listen, I even was trying to tell you that Unit 02 is probably the best model so far. Just because mine has a longer battery doesn’t immediately make it better. It’s got less armor, and sometimes feels like I have to argue with it to do what I want. It’s perfect for me, but you’d probably find it useless. Same way I’d find Unit 02 to be a bit bulkier and bit too slow for my taste.” He explained, calmly.

“You know… other people can be interesting if you’re willing to just listen. I really do like you, Asuka. And I admire you having a strong personality, but… you’d be astonished how much fun you could have when you just consider someone else an equal to you. Can we just try that? I accept you’re the best pilot. What can’t you just accept I’m the best at hand-to hand?”

"Pretty good? I'm better than just 'pretty good'!" Asuka boasted, giving the taller boy a rather sour expression. "There's a reason they chose me to be the pilot of the first military-grade EVA Unit!"

"You must be one of the American EVA pilots, right?"

"You'll end up killing yourself if you don't rest to heal your wounds, idiot," Asuka replied. "You can't get stronger if you don't let yourself heal, you'll only make your injuries worse and your body won't be able to strengthen. That's just common sense."

She flipped her hair over her shoulder and stuck her nose up in the air. "You can watch me fight in a few weeks when I'm fully healed. Until then you'll just have to imagine it in that tiny brain of yours."

"Well yeah, but I didn't know you were so injured that you can't move or anything. I mean, you are in the gym with me." Still, she did have a point.

"Well, it's all I know how to do. I was raised from birth to fight, so I don't know what else to do with myself. All I was ever told to do was fight and kill people, so I'm just sorta... existing? I guess? You're clearly more complete as a person than me."

"I guess I am so used to injuring myself though that the idea of being injured and not training is alien to me?"

Jowi approached Asuka, in the middle of the ring they were to fight in. Nerv and UA had set up a little exhibition battle between themselves, and now, with the other two EVA kids having won and lost a single round, Jowi stepped up to challenge Asuka. “So, I hear you’re the best. That your quirk is tougher than the other two, right? Well… I’m counting on it, so don’t disappoint me. It’s been a good while since I’ve had a real fight.”

The UA kids were all pretty weak. Sure, some of them put up a good fight, but in the end, NERV proved they really were the most skilled and elite in terms of Private Hero Academies. Asuka was among the best of their rather small class.

She eyed her opponent, frowning as he addressed her. "Yeah, yeah. Let's get this over with," she sighed, rolling her eyes and performing a couple of simple stretches. "What's your quirk? Super strength? This is gonna be easy~!"

They were finally alone. The anticipation before a mission was always the worst part. Asuka got antsy and wanted to get inside her entry plug immediately. But this mission was a little different. She wasn't even assigned to pilot this time. Part of her was upset about that, the other part of her was... worried for Jowi. He might not come back from this. And she didn't know how to feel about that.

"H-hey... Meathead," She muttered softly, despite them being all alone. She reached out to catch his wrist. "I... just wanted to say that I..."

She trailed off, looking away to hide the blush that had formed on her cheeks. She reached up and caught him by the collar of his plugsuit, tugging him down so he was eye level with her. When she finally looked him in the eye again she had a soft scowl on her lips.

Before she could change her mind or he could say anything she tugged him closer, kissing him hard on the mouth. It only lasted a few seconds, but when she pulled away she let go of him and turned away, storming off toward the door.

"Don't die out there."

"That... sounds really cheesy. But I guess I could come over... I don't wanna cuddle you though!" Her nose wrinkled in disgust. "That's embarrassing!" Despite that, his compliment about her piloting went directly to her head. "Thank you! Finally, someone appreciates my superior skills."

"Make up for it? Maybe you should just watch where you're going next time!" Asuka complained.

"I don't need your help!" She continued. "What? Do you think I'm some weak little girl?" She wrinkled her nose at him and placed a hand on her hip, glaring down her nose at him.

Asuka rolled her eyes. "You're the fifteenth boy today to ask if I want a tour. As if the staff hadn't already given me a tour of the school when I first transferred. It's rather pathetic to think you even have a sliver of a chance with me."

"Why don't you just take your stack of books and scurry off?" She suggested, flipping her hair and turning away from him. "Don't be so pathetic and weak. Maybe you'll actually get a girlfriend if you acted less like a wimp and more like an actual man."

She started to walk away, not even bothering to give him a second glance.

Well... That was harsh. Understandably so, but still-

"I-I'm so sorry, I just forgot my bag and I uhhh-"

He was a little taken aback by her grabbing her book so quickly. Sure, it wasn't entirely out of the ordinary, most people liked to keep to themselves around here, but it was still jarring to see such a small gesture be struck down so swiftly.

'Maybe I'm too used to my teammates? Not like I get to talk with a lot of my peers outside of them-'

"I-I was just trying to help-"

"I mean, I gotta make up for this somehow..."

Still he relented, not wanting to push her any further. This whole scheme wouldn't work if she didn't want to talk to him. Instead, he focused on gathering up his own stack of books, placing them in a little pile beside him.

He looked up at her briefly, before quickly averting his eyes. It'd been a while since he'd left the role of the shy nerdy kid behind, but he still knew it well.

"Y-you're the new transfer student, right? From Germany?" He asked, gently poking at the subject as to not make it seem like he was trying to change the subject. "Maybe I could g-give you a tour or something? Show you around the area? I k-know the first few weeks after a move can be rough to adjust to."

He winces slightly, both from the memories of his previous moves, and from second guessing if that might've come on too strong.

"O-or I could do something else, whatever you need really. I j-just... I gotta make this right."

He hoped the more shy and gentle tone might get his intentions across. Or well... the intentions he would've had if he hadn't had an ulterior motive behind this collision in the first place.

Mikan.exe has stopped working. As soon as she heard him call her cute she was as red as an apple and fainting on the spot. You flustered her too much, Jowi!!

"C-Cute?!" Jowi you did it! You got Asuka flustered! Well, for a second. Because as soon as she regained her composure she was back to her usual bitchiness. "What? Do you have a crush on me or something?! As if I'd ever like you!"

She continued to writhe and wriggle, trying desperately to escape his grasp. "Ughhh I regret agreeing to this already!" She grumbled, still trying to shove him away. She really was the black cat type.

He’d drop the topic of his own mortality for now. No need to argue right away.

“Fine. You’re not rude. But you’re still everything else I said. So if that other guy asks for a second date, make sure to tell him you’ve got a crazy, huge, former-giant robot pilot for a boyfriend now. And that he makes really good burgers.”

He chuckled, pulling her back into a hug,

“Oh, and get used to hugs. You’re stuck with me forever, and I’m never going away as long as I live.”
