Thingvellir & Reykjanes

We didn’t have time to do the whole Golden Circle this time, but did visit Thingvellir National Park again.

This is a beautiful waterfall that’s slightly bluish in color, like the blue lagoon.

Reykjanes Peninsula

On our way to the Keflavik Airport, we stopped by a few sites on Reykjanes Peninsula:

- Gígvatnsvatn (Green Lake)

- Krísuvíkurberg Cliffs - the drive is a bit long on dirt road, about half hour round trip.  Not sure if so worth it.

- Gunnuhver Hot Spring - quite a strong hot springs.. we could barely see the person in front of us while walking from the Parking Lot.  And a very strong sulfur smell that kids loudly protested. :)

Travel tips

We had a great time in Iceland.  Some parting thoughts: June/summer time is a great time to visit Iceland. It never got truly dark despite “nighttime” from 12:30-3:30am. This means long day and lots of time to get out and enjoy. Just be sure to bring eyeshades so you can sleep.  Last time we went during end of August and it got dark just like in America.  

Food is expensive, with burgers going for $30.  We stayed at vacation rentals so we can cook ourselves. Things to note, the most expensive item is often not the best item on the menu.  So be sure to read Google Maps reviews on what to order.

We drove a rental Tesla, not much than regular cars.  The car we got had basic self driving, making it easy to drive long distance.  Apparently the Model Y is the most popular car here, and u can find chargers in hotels or parking lots all over.  We even got 300 miles of free charging.

Saturday.

On Saturday I could not find warmth.

We landed in Reykjavik, Iceland. We went outside looking for the Lava shuttle. It was below freezing. We were on the wrong side of the airport. By the time we figured it out, we were freezing.

Finally we caught the shuttle to our rental car. It is a Tesla. We did not see lava from the Lava shuttle. But we did see the glow and orange smoke.

We had breakfast at The Grey Kitten. Then went to our Air BNB. It was so warm in our apartment. I fell asleep.

We have arrived in Iceland! First stop: Reykjavik!

We picked up our rental car after landing in Iceland, my mom had to re-learn manual drive, and then we were off from the airport! We ate some traditional Icelandic food at Loki Café, explored the outside of this monumental church, met a furry friend, and shared lovely conversation with a Norwegian man who sat next to us at the Café. We spoke of Trump, teslas, chess, spirituality, and Sedona- What are the odds!

We had a really vibrant and brilliant conversation. He came out to Iceland for a Krishna Das concert and feels connected to Iceland, as if he has lived here in a past life- something he felt very comfortable sharing with us, as he could obviously gage his audience. He also explained some Icelandic history, about how we must visit Thingvellir, where the tectonic plates meet and where Icelandic parliament called Althing, was established in 930 AD. There they created laws that are still relevant now, as the Norwegian man told us. We laughed about how we can’t even do that now, which led to a small Trump discussion. He expressed his sadness and how he can’t even watch the news anymore, and after that told us that his government subsidizes Teslas. Amazing and slightly distraught between the differences, we once again, shrugged, and laughed it off. But as the conversationalist that he is, he somehow smoothly transitioned the conversation to focus on chess- which, I suppose, has a similar strategy to conversation. He told us that the world champion is a Norwegian, to which my mom noted her Norwegian friend growing up, was also gifted in chess.

I find it incredibly fascinating that of all the people to run into, we run into a spiritual Norwegian man who has lived in Sedona, a rather obtuse place in Arizona where my aunt and uncle lived for about 20 years, not so long ago. I’m well into my “The Future of God” book by Deepak Chopra that I picked up in Edinburgh at this point and am finding it difficult to avoid these signs and the obvious themes of this trip surrounding religion, spirituality, nostalgia, connectedness, grief and healing. I feel as though every time that I travel, this is the outcome.

I feel incredibly lucky now to have this opportunity to explore these wonderful places with my mom, and feel like it has truly been a healing adventure for the both of us, thus far. And there is only more to come! We are heading to some healing pools and waterfalls next, so stay tuned for some photos of that!
