Mob w a Gyaru!reader…(gn reader)

To say mob was obsessed is an understatement. He simply fawns over your fashion and loves the idea of going against the beauty standard. Although because of his fashionable s/o, he has a hard time blending in. At times he doesnt want the attention but his albsolute cutie of his lover being the center of attention, mob wouldnt mind just this once.

You both go to clothing shops together! Mob believes and trusts your fashion taste to be able to pick a few for him. He wants to hang out and uses the idea of shopping together to get you talking. He enjoys it. Afterall he somewhat helps with some of the clothes for you to pick out, while you help him look his best. He adores your keen eye on managing to find the good clothes that are usually hidden..(gatekeepers😒😒)

When you go on dates he swears he can pay, but his pay isnt enough..afterall regien isnt too reliable. Instead you pay, hope you dont mind. After you both end up going to the park or going to each others houses to hang out later. Mob gaslights(begs) reigen to let him off early for these dates too. He wants to show his respect by simply making time for you like any wonderful lover.

Mob and his family aprove of you so much! You are just the sweetest and the cutest girls to ever approach mob. Ritsu thinks its rad that his older brother managed to get a parnther in general, but thinks even more highly of you when he knows and sees your genuine care for his brother. Plus when you go to mobs house to hangout, ritsu joins whenever he feels lonely. You and mob welcome him with open arms, especially when watching a horror movie.

Mob uses his psychic powers to try to find out what you like in order for him to get the RIGHT gift. Hes just whipped and his friends and brother tease him for it. Simple middle schoolers am i right? He doesnt mind it though.

He introduces you to reigen and reigen approves. Reigen sees you as fit, and an adorable girl who would help mob by the long mile. Mob also introduced you to teru and sho, as well as the other psychics. They all like you and think you are so cool with your makeup and fashion. Heck, teru asked for some advice too.

Mob gets you both matching keychains..guaranteed. Like those cute sanrio ones or the cute little characters. He finds them absolutely adorable. The idea that his s/o has the other half, he ends up staring at his keychain on end till his club snaps him outta it.

In school you might as well be a prodigy! He finds the fact that you do so well extremely admirable. He wants to be tutored by you and you only. Only you can be patient with him. He thinks of you as top of his class, grade, school even!( next to ritsu ) He just gets so happy seeing you not having to worry about grades and what not.

There are times when you are doing makeup, he just watches. No conversation, nothing. Soly because he thinks its skillful, he feels as tho its art and that she shouldn’t interfere. But there are times he asks questions about the products your using. Hes just curious about all that stuff.

Hes your #1 supporter! He believes that you should and will do what YOU want. That no one should tell you anything about how to look, act, or present yourself!

hey! let’s talk about teru’s relationship with food!

all three of us get the feeling that food is a love language for teru, or at least, we feel like it’s important to consider how food plays a role in his story arc when doing a character study of him.

okay so first off, right from his introduction he is a foil to mob.

when teru first appears, we as an audience don’t know it yet, but he lives alone and has been living alone without his parents for several years. here he is cooking his own breakfast and getting himself ready in his apartment by himself.

meanwhile mob, is woken up by his mom and is checked on by his brother to make sure he was up in order to get a breakfast that was more than likely made by their parents.

when mob plans on confessing to tsubomi, teru brings up how homemade things tend to make him feel happy when someone confesses to him.

this often played for laughs, but stick with us here…

in the fanbook teru is asked if he cooks for himself and he says yes, and mentions that he’s confident in his pasta making skills.

at first this may seem like a very 14 year old answer…I mean, pasta is fairly easy to make. But knowing teru and how he tends to become and expert at the skills he learns, odds are pasta started off as something simple to throw together on a school night. Pasta is easy and convenient and kid friendly, but it is very easy to experiment with and eventually become a speciality.

and one thing we know about teru is that he has too many specialities to list.

this kid has been needing to make his own food 100% on his own since the start of middle school. we can infer he’s getting money from his parents, and we aren’t exactly sure how much or how he spends it regarding food, but the only time we seem him eating alone, he is making a meal for himself outside of something premade or takeout. he said it himself, he makes lots of different kinds of things! he knows how to cook!

but with all things teru something simple and silly comes with tragedy. while it’s nice fore a kid his age to know how to cook, he NEEDS to know because he doesn’t live with his parents. if he didn’t know how to cook he would be relying on others, and that’s just not what teru does. He is fully capable and learns for himself out of necessity. teru is responsible for all of his own meals.

so what happens when he is no longer responsible? it could be an issue with humbleness. it could also be just normal 14 year old boy hunger, but when reigen takes him out to eat there’s no limits. but here’s the thing…when’s the last time teru has had a home-cooked meal that was made for him by someone else? not from a restaurant, but someone making something for him?

this is why we have the omurice scene in backdraft. there’s a comfort in the domesticity of having food prepared for him in a familial setting that he has not realized he has been missing from his life.

we’ve focused on the fear of him getting cut off from his parents and how money scarcity turns into food scarcity. he’s always been in survival mood, it’s just that money was the breaking point for him.

going back to mob. he and his family are normally seen sitting at the dinner table together. a normal domestic setting.

of course, in backdraft we have the restaurant scene that mirrors this. empty chairs for absent parents.

BUT ITS NOT ALL SAD

back to food being a love language and specialty to teru…imagine once he’s no longer in survival mode due to trauma. food as a comfort, not only receiving, but making it for others as well. tying into him wanting to be a teacher, sharing his skills with others…the fact it feels good creating and sharing something. no longer taking care of himself out of necessity, but learning what his skills and hobbies are and genuinely sharing them because they make him feel accomplished and happy! it just ties everything together with this dude.

in short, cooking is more than likely another speciality teru has developed due to needing to live on his own. since mp100 has themes that involve human connection and relationships with others, we feel food is something that brings people together and our boy teru here should experience that firsthand.

that is why it plays a big role in what we have so far in backdraft!

Despite all i post about being terukane, i actually fucking love nene.

hence, 4 reasons why you should love nene too (+mini analysis at the end?)

Reason 1: shes cares so much

For one, when aoi was trapped in the far shore, not only did she cry, but so much so that even mentioning her name made her cry, like full on cry not even tear up. She let herself cry in a public infront of someone she deems ‘hottest guy in the school’ not really gaf cus she misses her bsf

And when she got aoi back, she didnt need aoi’s apology she just missed her, going in for an immediate hug, letting aoi tear up in her arms

At the end of the ‘picture perfect’ arc she thanked shijima mei for the painting, something no one else did

She asked what sumire saw in No. 6 to make her like him sm, again something only she did which caught hanako and sumire off guard

Reason 2: shes adorable.

idk how shes not as popular as aoi she’s actually so pretty. A moment of silence for our queen nene

Reason 3: She’s the mc, what are you doing NOT loving her??

shes the narrator, the character we’ve known the longest and are going to stick with until the end. How dare thee betray her and say she sucks? ‘She has a big forehead’ its called a hairstyle

‘she has big ankles’ yah and theyre cute. Its called having originality

‘copy and paste personality’ shes actually one of the more original mc’s ive seen in awhile. She isnt one of those girls who’re obsessed with just boys and makes that her whole personality, yes she does get crushes easily, but she’d rather die and lose the boy she actually has a chance with than let her bestfriend die. She has standards

Reason 4: shes cool as fuck?

she has a skull brooch, skull on her phone, horns ON HER PHONE, wears yin and yang hair pins, loves opera songs about forbidden love, loves scary stories, interested in supernaturals and the dead/ghosts and to top it all off, in the pilot she CURSED her ex to DEATH

tired and can’t think of anything else 😭 kinda starting to think chapter 113 IS the last chapter. I mean you’d think AidaIro would say something considering they’ve been making this manga for almost a decade now but the ‘sinister’ ending along with there being no ‘next chapter up on the 18th!’ Makes me kinda nervous 😭 as i said they’ve been doing this almost 10yrs no way they’d forget to put it there

AidaIro have publicly stated they both dislike/hate happy endings. And this i feel, is a perfect way to end it horribly. I absolutely hate the idea of this being an ending, but it would work out pretty smoothly in pissing off their entire fanbase. I mean theres so many unanswered questions and so many things left unsaid.

are teru and aoi really getting married? which yugi sibling is alive? will any of my previous ‘suspicions’ be definitively confirmed? what happened to hanako? what changed? whats happening with the clock keepers? what did natsuhiko do? what is sakuras role in this story?

this seems such a perfect way to end is so horribly😭 REALLY hope this isnt the case doh we’ll just have to wait and see. The topic strayed very far off from why you should love nene 😭 sorry lmao

12. Swap au?

AU where Kou becomes the seventh mystery and Amane becomes his assistant (In retrospect his assistant probably should’ve been Mitsuba but I was on a Hanakou ROLL)!! I enjoy this concept a lot but I'll admit its not the most thought out idea so don't expect much lmao

Kou is now Number 7 of the roof top: Nariko-San! Hanako said not many people know how to summon him but I think it’s pretty lame excuse? I mean if getting a wish granted was as easy as knocking on a bathroom door I feel like way more people would do it yk!! The more powerful the apparition, the harder it should be to summon. So to up the ante, Nariko’s rumor is ‘if you go out on the roof top on a rainy day and lean over the railing while chanting ‘Nariko-San, Nariko-San, save me' She just might make your wish come true' and of course the "price to pay" here is the risk of losing your life yk

Amane is crazy enough to be the first to summon him. His wish is something along the lines of him wanting to ‘live among the stars' or something equally as emo and blah blah when he finally summons him, Nariko appears in a streak of lightning and instantly pulls Amane back in. Amane expected a more grim figure with a matching God-like disposition but Nariko shows immediate concern, dispelling any previous expectations.

I'm not exactly sure how or why but eventually instead of a mermaid scale Amane swallows a bird feather? He turns into an owl and Nariko has to fight off a harpy, stating those are "angels" who use avian creatures as their 'eyes'. When the harpy is finally gone, Nariko eats the other feather and makes Amane promise not to randomly fly off and leave (because people care about him yadda yadda). Now anytime Amane gets flustered/agitated or sneezes, he turns into his owl form.

Teru is Nariko’s Tsukasa so to speak. His personality is sort similar mother Gothel from Tangled where he's more emotionally manipulative than violent/extreme like Tsukasa. Anyways Tiara grows up without her siblings. One of the only things I’ve written for this AU is Nariko grappling with that guilt so stay tuned for that <3

I’ll be so honest I was only here to max out on the shipping potential so I didn’t think about other characters' roles though too much lol. I've been aching to write the beginnings of this au so I can cash in on the weird Teru and Nariko dynamic later but as you can tell my ideas are a little scatterbrained with some bits of info missing here and there.

So I finished Mob Psycho 100 the other day!! X3

Ngl, I didn’t care for this anime all that much, don’t get me wrong, it’s great!! Just def not in my tops! X3 Tho I will admit I enjoyed it better then I expected to, cuz in the beginning I was still struggling to watch it a bit, it was just okay! X,D But once s1 started to kick off, that’s when I started to enjoy it more!! I enjoyed s1 and 2, tho s3 was eh tbh, the ending was nice, but like, I find s3 wasn’t that great! X,3 The story was weak and bland imo!

Anyways!

Sorry if I upset any Mob lovers!! I love the characters and it was funny, but just the story itself was my issue! XD

Anyways, as for my fav character, mmmmm gosh that’s tough!! I really love Mob, Reigen, The Body Improvent Club, and Teru! X,D They’re all great, but currently in rewatching the series, and I gotta say, I think I lean more towards Reigen, cuz like despite being a conartist, he still helps his clients in some way! He actually earns his money, just may not be in the way the people expect! But hey, they can’t complain when he technically does help them in the end! X3 I adore him, and gosh his dub VA truly is amazing, I mean I knew he was amazing thx to Taiju, but geez seriously he’s phenomenal!! XD Stinken wish he could teach me a few things!!

X3 Plus they haven’t interacted in years according to Mob! So im glad that didn’t happen! X,D Mob deserves someone better imo! And Tsubomi ain’t it!

Oh and one more complaint, going back to s3!!! THEY CHANGED THE DUB VAs FOR MOB AND THE TELEPATH PREZ!! Like EXCUSE ME?! X,3 That got me so upset, cuz that voice made Mob, Mob!! So the change really upset me!! Like I could get kinda use to her change cuz she ain’t as apparent, even tho it did upset me cuz I love the va of her character in the first two seasons! But MOB?! Why him?! Why my boy?! It just ruined s3 more for me! X,3 While I appreciate the VA trying to keep it close to the original, it just wasn’t the same! It was very upsetting! X,3

BUT SO SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN POSITIVELY IMPACTED BY HIM AND SO MANY PEOPLE LOVE HIM AND WANT HIM AND NEED HIM

I LOVE HOW REIGEN WAS FORCED TO FACE THAT TRUTH THROUGH DIMPLE'S MEMORIES, I LOVE HOW DIMPLE CARES AND IS CONCERNED FOR REIGEN WHILE BEING BRUTAL AND A LITTLE SHIT

i love how everyone turns to teru because he's reliable and he's smart but he's just a 14 year old who's had to be his own adult for way too long and he's just trying to figure things out, too. I LOVE HATE THE WAY HE TRIES TO FILL REIGEN'S SHOES, I LOVE THEIR FATHER-SON DYNAMIC

Hello Bloo!! I’m so sorry it took me this long to finally reply. Life is life, and now I’m here! But just know that I’ve been rereading this ask consistently because it makes me so happy that my work can…make people think THOUGHTS? In-depth thoughts that they want to share with me?? It still barely feels real to me that people are liking my silly self-indulgent fic where I make the business man suffer. So thank you! I’m so happy you’re enjoying it, and thank you again for that deliciously-crafted fan comic! :)

I'm sparing your poor souls from a Cherry ramble under the cut. But for those who wanna peek inside my silly head:

As for what you’re saying about the fic itself…yeah HAHA. You’ve got it down. As someone who’s completely desensitized to their own ideas and the execution of said ideas, I don’t know how obvious all my little underlying themes and ulterior plot lines have been, but your interpretation of it all is pretty spot on. I’m a sucker for forcing characters to face their own truth via IMPOSSIBLE circumstances and then dragging every other character into a whirlpool of chaos and conflict and confrontation in turn. It makes it all the more fun >:)

I’ve been trying to write the characters carefully so their dynamics blend or clash or do anything else that I please, and that means letting them roam free and interact with each other while keeping their special character quirks. I love writing Mob constantly on the verge of guilty instability, Seri having to step his ass up despite his confidence not yet being 100%, Shou and his mysterious ways that are SO worth exploring because he's such a complex character despite not appearing a lot in canon, Ritsu’s impulsive, fear-driven, 13-year-old antics (and that dreaded stop sign), and of course, Reigen and all his pathetic self-loathing. In fact, ALL of them have been incredibly fun to write because ONE has amazing, fleshed-out characters that interact so well together. BUT I’ve been surprised with how much I’ve loved writing Dimple and Teru especially. Dimple’s not hard to write at all for me, but his interactions with the other characters in writing are ADDICTING, and I didn't expect that. I will say this forever, but I want Dimple in more fics because of the POTENTIAL. LET THE FART CLOUD HAVE THE SPOTLIGHT!! As for Teru—you can ask anyone who was around for the first few draft chapters of AH—I was very hesitant to write him at all. I personally think his character is very hard to nail, and I’m honestly surprised at how much the audience has taken to his role and his little moments within the fic—that encouragement and influence definitely made him appear more than I originally anticipated :)

I could ramble for hours about every character and all their inner complexities that I'd love to explore in this work and others. But I will stop myself here hahaha.

As for my mysterious sickness from a few weeks ago, it has vanished! Student life is crawling with unknown bacteria. It's like you're in daycare all over again, or perhaps a medieval plague ward. Now all I have to do is battle the turbulent trials of finals :’)

the surprise for reigen's birthday, where he IMMEDIATELY gets (lovingly) bullied by a bunch of kids, is the cutest thing ever. god this anime is so good. it has catapulted itself into my top 3 favorite anime so quickly and i wasnt expecting that. a beautiful story, amazing art, brilliant characters. truly a masterpiece. i see why you love it so much egg, and one again, thank u for constantly talking about it and getting me interested! very well deserved hype and i will hold it dear to my heart. 10/10, will definitely watch again multiple times

Top three mob psycho characters and why?

Omg hi!! @muninnhuginn Thank you so much for the ask! I think my top 3 characters would have to be:

1. Reigen

I feel like everything about Reigen has already been said one way or another so I’ll be brief but as much as he gets memed a lot by people and how absurd he really is when you see his character, I genuinely appreciate how complex he is in the story as well as his relationships with other characters, especially Mob and Serizawa. The Separation and Confession Arc are two of my favorites, and I love how we can see the clear development of Reigen’s character through both very easily.

2. Ritsu/Mob

I couldn’t choose between the two, so the brothers are being put in the same place for me. I think Ritsu on a level is so funny to me 💀 I love how he gets esper powers out of trying to bend spoons, and when he thinks of Mob as his cool older brother and then we cut to Mob passed out on the ground after jogging, or how he absolutely hates Reigen’s existence and wants to probably kick him in the shoe, and most of all I love the finale where we see just how much he’s grown and willing to reach out to Mob because he doesn’t want him to share that burden alone anymore. Ritsu is great in that duality of his character if that makes sense!

Mob is kind of the same way with Reigen where a lot on him has been said already lol, but in general he’s a perfect main character, he develops so well over the series (I love how the start of the Confession Arc calls back to the first arc with the same scenes playing out where we see how much Mob has grown), and his confrontations with Mogami, Dimple, and ???% are some of my absolute favorites where you really see him shine through.

3. Tome

I love her!! I have yet to still read REIGEN, but she quickly became one of my favs in the original for being a funky weird girl who loves aliens and loves hanging out with her friends. I think the Telepathy mini arc is one of my favorites mostly because we got to see more of her character at the forefront of the story (I also just love how the anime adapted it omg it looks amazing) but yeah she’s great!

Special mention to Tsubomi for being such a deconstruction of the shoujo love interest and how interesting she is in general (and also how the anime manage to expand more upon that like the additional scenes and her design changes throughout the seasons), and also Teru for well, being Teru lol, I don’t have much to say on him other than I absolutely love his development and how he’s just so silly on every level. 😭

“It Should Have Been Me” for sure, though none of my fics have straight up “bad” endings. There’s at least a little hope in each one. But with Mother 3 having the whole “Tanetane Island” business, it’s a rough night for all the kiddos after that 🫠

“Philophobia” and “Let Go” are close seconds with hopeful endings.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

“Yoroshiku Matsuoka-san”, the fic based off of the one and only “Issho” by Toasty! It’s still the longest fic I’ve ever written, sitting at almost 12k, and it’s still my fave I’ve posted. It’s all kinds of fluff (with only one angst scene) and ends with Reigen tucking Teru into bed and then giving him the safest, warmest hug 🥺

8. Do you get hate on fics?

LOL I’m not known enough in the fandom to get hate, and I hope I never am 🤣

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, but I keep those fics to myself. Even then, I wouldn’t consider them “smut,” and more like “graphic sex is present in this story, but it’s less about the sex and more about the emotions the characters are feeling.”

Most of them are safe ways for me to explore any type of sexual feelings I have while also sorting out what exactly it is I’m feeling. Because of this, most of them center around asexuality and kinks I’m curious about.

10. Do you write crossovers?

YEEEEES! Yes yes yes! I haven’t posted any, but I have WIPs of:

Super Mario Galaxy x Mother 3 (because Lucas needs a mom and that mom is Rosalina)

Earthbound x Mob Psycho 100 (Psychic kiddo meets psychic kiddo)

Danny Phantom x The Avengers (because I think science obsessed Danny and Bruce Banner would get along preeetty well.)

Well, I say that, but I have The Big Three which I like all for different reasons.

Ash x Misty (Pokeshipping) for being my very first ship, and it will always have a special place in my heart. (The fluff ship, if you will.)

Bruce Banner x Natasha Romanov (Brutasha) because there is SOOOOOO much potential with these two that the MCU just threw in the garbage and I’m MAD ABOUT IT! I’m writing and drawing what I WANT TO SEEEEEEE!!! (Aka, the angst ship)

And then Terumob, which has been the source of some of the best, most heartbreaking fics I’ve ever read. Get these kids some love. (The perfect blend between angst and fluff).

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Hmmmm not doubt I will, but it’ll take me years XD

It’s “Adrift,” which is my love letter to my favorite fairy tales, musicals, romance tropes, and just life itself.

I can’t see myself finishing it until I’m older though. Simply because the ending is supposed to represent how everything in life will work out in the end, and that there is a plan for each and every everyone of us in life…

… but I don’t know how that ends. I don’t know how my own life story ends, so how am I supposed to know how this one does?

16. What are your writing strengths?

I’m not sure if it’s my strength, but I love writing dialogue!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Well, since most of my fave shows are from Japan, that would be wild to write all the dialogue in Japanese haha. I’m similar to what Toasty said, where if there isn’t a translation for the word in English, I use the Japanese word with Romaji. I also try to use Japanese Honorifics to the best of my ability.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Super Mario Galaxy! I wrote it for a project in 5th grade lol.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Hmmmmm… finished fic would be “Yoroshiku Matsuoka-san” because I love that it made so many people smile!

But my favorite WIP is both the BB X MP100 x Marvel crossover and “Adrift”. Both fics fit into the category of “I’m writing what I’ve always wanted to read.”

oh, this is fascinating. out of curiosity (and also for my own reference lol) here’s almost every major character’s name in the original japanese: (ft. a little informal japanese pronunciation guide cuz i got excited whoops)

ok so… from what i remember of my admittedly quite limited memory of this subject, pronunciation in japanese is actually pretty straightforward: i.e. all 5 vowels typically sound the same (see ref below) and there aren’t really syllables but moras, or rhythmic units of about equal length. so you don’t really emphasize any one sound in japanese, kinda sorta, though this is somewhat debatable. [insert link to funny video that i can’t currently find here.] ANYWAY.

first, a japanese vowels pronunciation guide:

A: like the a in “father” or “taught” (AH) - あ

I: like the ee in “meet” (EE) - い

U: like the oo “ooze” or “food” (OO) - う

E: like the e in “pet” or “debt” (EH) - え

O: like the o in “or” (OH) - お

consonants come in lines, e.g. the K line (ka/ki/ku/ke/ko) and S line (sa/shi/su/se/so), and you can basically just add the consonant right to the vowel with a few exceptions (shi, chi, tsu, fu, etc. also n can be on its own as ん). btw, hiragana and katakana cover the exact same alphabet sound-wise, the difference is just that katakana is usually used for foreign words. so そうだ (so-u-da), as in 「そうだ。僕がキサだ。」 is different from ソーダ (sō-da), the drink.

there’s also a weird little thing where if you have a small tsu, like in the word for school がっこう (romanized as gakkou, w/ a little repeating consonant usually) you just kinda pause/repeat the sound— tbh i have no fucking idea how to explain this through words alone so just look here for an audio ref if you’re super curious. and finally “ー” just means you extend the previous vowel sound for another beat (i’ll add the little line thing on top of vowels for this, like ō).

ok now, the actual names:

Light Yagami: 夜神 月 -> ya-ga-mi ra-i-to. obviously there’s the whole 月(typically つき/tsu-ki) = “Light” thing going on here.

L Lawliet: L・ローライト -> e-ru rō-ra-i-to. really, the ロー here almost sounds like “raw” when i say it out loud, accounting for the whole lack of distinction between R/L thing. like “rohh-raito.” this is where people get the “lowlight” pronunciation i think. personally, my instinct is to go “law-lee-ett,” but i’m also a filthy american, so. also note the katakana here, for a foreign name, not to mention the “L” itself. the “raito,” though… on the nose, yes, but at leas with some basis in canon lmfao.

Misa Amane: 弥 海砂 -> a-ma-ne mi-sa. note, there are no silent letters in japanese!! so e’s at the end of a word/name should always be said aloud, like “ah-mah-neh” in this case

Ryuk:リューク-> ryū-ku. again it’s in katakana which is kinda interesting. this is pretty straightforward since we usually call him ryuk, but i did see a fan translation that called him “Luke” once— maybe cuz of the katakana? lol.

Rem: レム -> re-mu. no notes, just her <3

Near/Nate River: ニア -> ni-a, ネイト・リバー -> ne-i-to ri-bā. the “nia” part of that is pretty well known by now in english speaking communities ig, if only cuz of use of the ship names meronia/niamero lol. speaking of,

Mello/Mihael Keehl: メロ -> me-ro, ミハエル・ケール -> mi-ha-e-ru kē-ru. looking at that now, i wonder if the name “Mihael” was picked for the end “e-ru,” to mimic a certain someone…

Matt/Mail Jeevas: マット -> mat-to (small tsu thing applies here), マイル・ジーヴァス -> ma-i-ru jī-ba-su. the mail to mile thing might make more sense looking at how “a” is pronounced here, “mAH-ee-ru.”

Watari/Quillish Wammy: ワタリ-> wa-ta-ri, キルシュ・ワイミー -> ki-ri-shu wa-i-mī. again note the katakana for both names

Kiyomi Takada: 高田 清美 -> ta-ka-da ki-yo-mi. pretty straightforward

Teru Mikami: 魅上 照 -> mi-ka-mi te-ru. again straightforward though the inclusion of “kami” is perhaps notable, if a bit on the nose lol

Soichiro Yagami: 夜神 総一郎 -> ya-ga-mi sō-i-chi-rō.

Touta Matsuda: 松田 桃太 -> ma-tsu-da tō-ta.

and some bonus…

Minoru Tanaka: 田中実 -> ta-na-ka mi-no-ru.

Beyond Birthday: ビヨンド・バースデイ-> bi-yo-n-do bā-su-de-i. the english words are clearly intended here lol

Raye Penber: レイ・ペンバー -> re-i pe-n-bā. i appreciate that his name is usually written in english as “Raye” to distinguish from the more japanese “Rei”

Shoko Maki/Naomi Misora: 間木 照子 -> ma-ki shō-ko, 南空 ナオミ -> mi-so-ra na-o-mi. never realized that she has kanji for her surname but katakana for her first name. fascinating.

Eraldo Coil: エラルド・コイル -> e-ra-ru-do ko-i-ru.

so, yeah. perhaps that explains some of the origins of the “true” pronunciations that people tend to bring up, though really you can do whatever you want to forever <33

it’s interesting to note that even in the original series (aka not the LABB murders novel), both the japanese & non-japanese names were intentionally made to be not super common/realistic, though ohba perhaps stuck to that rule a little less stringently than mr. “believe bridesmaid” or whatever the fuck

the one thing that upsets me about my dialect is that i automatically put emphasis on YAGami instead of yagAMi as it is intended, so i sound like a poser.

that being said, i don't consider canon pronounciation to be sacred. the way takada's english voice actor pronounces mihael keehl is absolutely sickening, and i refuse to call him anything but mi-hay-el k-ee-l.

amane is left up to the gods to decide. i will usually just stick with a-mayn, rather than ah-mah-nAY.

don't know what the fuck is going on with matt. while i do enjoy that the phonetics of his name are completely different to the pronunciation, how one gets from mail to mile is beyond me. i could say something about how mail and mihael's names sound very similar and uh. maybe that's because. uh. mattwasmadeformello. but i won't. not today anyway.

will we ever learn how to pronounce lawliet? will that ever be something we understand in our lifetimes? maybe one day in a hundred years when we are living in floating pods in space, someone will remember tumblr exists, log back on, and find this post. maybe they will have the answer after all that time. but for what it's worth, law-lee-et. i think low-light is a bit too on the nose.

Top 3 Mob Psycho 100 arcs and why?

Firstly, I apologise in advance because I think this has got a real wordcount now. I tried so hard not to tangent, okay. I failed.

Okay, so most of these are closer to the end of the manga/anime and this could be recency bias in action, but tbh I think what it basically is is that the earlier arcs set up the characters such that by the time you reach these arcs that you as the audience have the investment to really get them?

Confession/???% arc

Confession arc

So this arc brings closure for pretty much every character. the only one I feel a bit iffy about in terms of that is Shou and I have seen some possible explanations as for why he says he won't use his powers anymore as a good thing but I can't help but feel that his arc is basically lagging behind everyone else? it's not a dealbreaker and he's clearly in a better place as of the epilogue but that's the only one that feels weird to me. I was also a bit wary about Dimple's return but have since swung myself around to accepting it rather than just "letting it pass"

Anyway,

teru part - all the callbacks to his intro arc, the mirroring but the roles are reversed.

touichiro - finally gets that 'redemption = death' would be an escape route for him rather than him actually owning up responsibility and living with his mistakes. him deciding to 'run away' saves both him and shou and leaves it open for them. both touichiro and shou are basically learning the lessons mob learnt on a delayed timetable

ritsu - there are definitely more intelligent things I could say here but the part of his confrontation I liked the most was how he recognised ???% as mob and accurately pinned down a load of what mob himself was going through before mob himself did

mob internal !!!. yeah !!! is all I got here. it's my favourite part of the entire arc bar maybe the reigen-mob parts so I really struggle to put words to it

reigen - mob. resolves both of their arcs in one shot and brings to light the parallels that honestly had not been shown the limelight previously?

The brief answer here is: closure for character arcs and bringing subtext to the text. I will say the anime dropped the ball a bit on the latter though with them deliberately missing some lines that made intentions clearer (Ritsu's plan to get himself hurt to snap Mob out of it; ???% calling out Mob disowning his powers so he didn't have to take responsibility for them; Ritsu realising that Mob didn't harm him at all). Still, the majority of it got through even if only by implication so I'm still happy with it, just overall prefer the manga for this arc.

(That said, I do like how several of the anime choices in the first episode of this arc (pre-truck-kun) deliberately call back to shots from the very first arc of the series to show how Mob has grown. He can actually receive a football now, run without immediately collapsing, when he goes to people it's to ask them for advice not because they need something from him)

Separation arc

-First thing, up until this point we actually have no idea of Reigen's life outside of Spirits and Such. This arc lets us peek behind the curtain and what we see there is grim. It also lays down groundwork for confession arc re: Reigen's 'hidden' side.

- okay so the thing is, Reigen doesn't need mob for psychic powers necessarily. in this arc, he's doing great as a 'psychic' up until the live show and Reigen successfully figures out that the 'victim' is faking it. by all accords just has to follow the script and get home free, but because he previously humiliated Jodo it was all a setup. I really didn't appreciate this until a recent rewatch, but the way in which Reigen is tricked would still work even if Reigen were a true psychic. either way, he knew the 'victim' was faking and acted as expected on a supposedly scripted tv show. Reigen also got by fine before Mob came along and could probably just avoid taking on clients who may actually be haunted. My point is, in terms of powers? that may have been the reason why he first 'hired' Mob, but that's not the full reason he keeps him around now.

- Anyway, Reigen is just miserable the entire time he's away from Mob this arc, both before and after the fame trip. Even the fame trip parts where he's ostensibly doing great read as almost... manic? In how he's trying to prove just how well he's doing. There are also the Mogami references with the bugs when Reigen hits rock bottom which just really emphasise how Reigen could easily have gone down another path

- And! this all happens over his birthday. which, yikes, but also it means when we see his next birthday in the epilogue and he's surrounded by people trying not to cry it's just that much sweeter

- also I've mainly zoned in on the reigen aspects of this ep, but the thing that kick starts the arc after reigen is way too harsh is mob setting his foot down. there's no way he would have done that in s1, but because he's grown over the course of the series (and as I saw another post point out recently, as he's just come from mogamiland where he was constantly belittled by others) he decides to walk away. and honestly, that was the healthiest thing for both of them at that point? this arc does come to a really good conclusion imo but first it shows the toxicity in the mob-reigen relationship and starts the process of mending some of it. mob's answer when reigen asks him if he knows (he's not a real psychic) is sweet, but ultimately a sidestep from answering fully. so whilst on first watch you may think it's all resolved, some of the threads laid down here return in confession arc.

- it may not seem it from what I've written above, but reigen does genuinely hurt mob. if you had to assign who of mob and reigen were the most toxic element in their dynamic it would be reigen hands down. mob's main flaw in terms of their relationship comes down to being too passive (and him breaking out of this is literally what triggers this arc) and his refusal to confront reigen's lies head on. meanwhile reigen full on claims mob doesn't have friends and lowkey encourages mob to keep him as his priority when mob considers branching out (the entire thing about him saying mob shouldn't join any clubs especially. it could be argued there was some genuine concern in there mob was being taken advantage of by the telepathy club but the reason reigen considers that so fast is because that's what he himself is doing). reigen keeps insisting that mob will return to him because he hasn't got anyone else. like, if that happens in a real life friendship/relationship, it would be a huge red flag, you know?

- Reigen absolutely lashes out like this and tries to cling to Mob as his lifeline as a defence mechanism. it's not spelt out until waaay down the line, but reigen does believe he is inherently unlovable if he shares his full self. and until the very last arc, if asked to choose between pushing someone away or letting them in properly and truly, I sincerely believe he would choose the former. and yet, he does absolutely want to have that connection as this arc shows. he's just too scared to be the one to reach out. It doesn't excuse his actions in any way but added to everything else (estranged family, closest he has to ‘friends’ are bar acquaintances) it paints the picture of a lonely, lonely man.

Divine Tree arc

- it's about faith as a concept but largely divorced from any specific real life religion. cults! return to teru's entire pedestally thing. another image of mob as an image of god! so fun thematically.

- I really really liked how the anime adapted the horror aspects of this arc. There was one specific episode that was directed so differently from anything in the other episodes and it was so so unsettling. I loved it.

- my favourite part is where dimple is trying to do his villain monologue and it becomes more and more apparent that he's actually just doing this to try and cling onto some purpose. he hasn't wanted to really "rule the world" or anything like that for some time, but if he faces that then what reason has he left to exist? And it may be okay for humans to just trundle along with no purpose but a spirit with no reason to exist? a spirit with no reason to exist cannot exist.

- which is why confession arc when it's revealed that mob's faith in dimple kept him around it works. the one person dimple didn't try to overpower to worship him is the one person who actually believed in him? in confession arc itself I kinda give the return a pass because I don't like it when sacrifices get retrospectively cheapened, but with the context of the whole of divine tree it... actually works? (and there are some more reasons why it has to be both dimple and reigen to reach mob but that's a tangent here)
