#teru has faith in himself + then in mob. but having faith like that in any one person is folly

the thing with teru is that for the longest time he struggles to see everyone as on the same playing field.
when he’s introduced he thinks that he’s at the top of the societal pyramid because of his powers. he thinks that mob is merely a threat he has to teach his place and it takes the best part of their fight for teru to reassess that and acknowledge that mob is a rival, but one that he is still above in this world.
when mob collapses and ???% beats him, teru realises that he is insignificant in the wider scheme of things and at the same time he ends up putting mob on a pedestal. teru believes he is insignificant because there’s a much larger power that he must bow to. he puts mob above him, an average person.
and teru sticks to that, with the admiration, the devotion where mob is essentially the new guide by which he tries to live his life up until the divine tree arc. dimple then forces teru to see him as his god instead. and that in of itself highlights the fact that teru’s devotion (whether to himself or mob or dimple) is essentially like worshipping a deity. that’s the kind of gap he sees between “average” people and those he places above them. mob breaks teru from dimple’s control and teru snaps mob back on his pedestal (’you really are amazing’). teru may have worked on himself but he still hasn’t broken from his framework that there are average people and those above them.
fast forward to his second confrontation with ???% and teru’s using his mob-guide to try and preach back to ???%. but he’s still putting mob above him, still thinks mob is untouchable and wouldn’t fail where ‘average’ people would. and then ???% deliberately puts on a show of strength that puts people in danger, he uses his powers against teru despite having previously refused to do so to the point of collapse. and it’s a real pedestal-breaking moment for teru. he thought that mob was such a moral person that he designed his whole new belief system around him. but the person at the centre of this belief system wasn’t the whole truth. that mob was just as much a false god as dimple and teru himself.
still, the philosophy is sound and teru did change for the better as a result. the pedestal and framework is broken, but that’s not a bad thing. any pedestal that high must eventually collapse.
#I think my brain is a little frazzled by other media because I see this pedestalling and my mind goes straight to religious devotion#teru has faith in himself + then in mob. but having faith like that in any one person is folly#having a belief system and wanting to improve yourself though? that stands regardless#mob psycho 100#mp100#mp100 spoilers#mob psycho 100 spoilers#tried really hard to make this non spoilery for anime-onlies but as I said. am kinda frazzled rn sorry#tldr; teru pov of mob is threat (bug) -> rival (feigned) -> admiration (devotion) -> rival (real)#it is really neat how teru's arc is basically constant reassessment thinking of it this way#I definitely saw some post about teru and hierarchies the other day I want to refind now

i’m having so many emotions about teru
that was such a fast-paced, high-stakes situation, and he was thrown so many curveballs he barely had any time to cope with, and he still managed to adjust at impressive speed and never lost his faith in mob.
specifically: that moment right before ???% grabs him by the throat, when he’s kneeling on the ground trying to catch his breath. in that split moment, that’s when the realisation dawns, that this version of mob has no qualms in hurting him even with his bare hands. mob being non-violent to the point of letting himself get choked to unconsciousness was literally how they met, it’s one of the foundations at his core, and teru was well aware of it. having that knowledge suddenly be proven wrong, and all that means for his own safety, must have been a lot to take in. i can’t quite tell if it’s fear that we see on his face for a second, but if it is, that really adds to the element of horror - that sudden realisation that you’re in so much more danger than you thought and your initial plan is not going to be enough.
and then of course: when ???% lets loose his power despite so many people still being around and unable to evacuate. the horror on teru’s face, man. i don’t think it’d really clicked for him what mob being in this state actually meant until then. sure, him attacking teru was unlike him, but terus still an esper. he’s in great danger but he can somewhat defend himself. but civilians are different, and you can really tell teru did NOT think mob would put them in danger like that. he’s completely shell-shocked. i think that was another huge moment where he had to very quickly reassess the situation and what to do about it, all while coping with the emotional side of it all, since this is one of his closest friends and someone he really admires. he has to very quickly reckon with the fact that despite the pedestal he put him on, mob is just as human as he is and is capable of making mistakes just like everybody else, mistakes that don't detract from his worth.
which brings me to the point of it all. that DESPITE ALL THAT, teru was still able to 1) understand that mob desperately wants someone to stop him and would never want to harm anyone like this (bc he remembered that mob cried after realising what he’d done to his school....... where he’d only really harmed one person, who had done much worse to him..... if he cried after that, how will he feel when he finds out what he’s causing now?), 2) save all the people caught up in the devastation and get them all out of harm’s way, while being in a lot of pain (his EYES were BLEEDING), and 3) never once lose faith in mob. he saw him go on a (unintentional and unwilling, but teru doesn’t know that) rampage, doing things he would never in a million years think mob would ever do, and still took all of that in in record time considering the situation, and came out on the other side still whole-heartedly believing in shigeo and his goodness, and almost dying trying to stop him. because he knew that being the reason hundreds of innocent people got injured (or worse) would completely and utterly break mob.
and while, knowing teru, he might think he failed since he couldn’t achieve his goal (stopping mob’s rampage), what he succeeded in doing was ultimately just as important. he saved all the people he could, and gave his best for the one person he couldn’t.
#mob psycho 100#mp100#mp100 spoilers#hanazawa teruki#kageyama shigeo#this got really long but i have so many thoughts on this#there are some things i only brushed upon but that still drive me insane. but those will be for some other post maybe#the gist of this is that i think what teru was able to do here is an incredible feat that not many people could have done#both from a concrete point of view in terms of the people he saved and attempts he made at stopping mob#but also from a purely emotional perspective in terms of coping with all the life-altering curveballs being thrown at him#while being engaged in life-threatening battle#someone please get this kid to a hospital and then to a warm meal and a comfy bed or i'll do it myself#anyway thank you to bones for doing a great job with this final arc so far. excited for the next two eps#even having read the manga i'm NOT ready#post.txt

MOB THOUGHTS EATING ME ALIVE:
yes yes we all make fun of how Ritsu thinks about his brother all the time but so does Mob. It's the convenience store where he bought candies with Ritsu, hence all the rage directed at the looters.
Ritsu kinda like Ember's Zuko. He hates being wrong, but he hates being right even more.
love that Mob understands the concept of specialization and comparative advantage. He would understand microeconomics so well
Teru would rather people know he's an esper and have to fight off more adults than reveal the baldness
10 whips, but yeah decreasing marginal utility
Don't overthink psychic powers, that's where most espers plateau
Teru has sensory range too huh?
Headcanon: Teru learned waterboarding from paying attention to the US handling of "enhanced interrogation tactics" and also he spends a lot of time online because he lives on his own rip
the PM didn't try to take the kid with him… scum. deserved what he got
in the same manner, the Mental Antenna team was willing to beat up two 10-year olds… dude.
ONE COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THE SHIRATORI BROTHERS AND THEN EXPOSED HIMSELF TO EVERYONE…. KING
All the different names that people refer to Mob: Mob, Nii-san, Shigeo, Shige, Shigeo-kun (Serizawa), Kageyama-kun, White T Poison
Man Mogamiland really had such a profound impact on Mob… he's using the same tactics that worked (he minori'ed Serizawa). And of course the lack of people on his side => Mogamiland
Mob really just uno reversed / no u 'd Serizawa huh
Shou: ha guess my plan did work Mob: you set fire to my home? Shou: sorry but you see, my dad Mob: understandable have a nice day
ah yes Shou setting fire to houses and faking their deaths is equivalent to Ritsu beating up bullies and ostracizing delinquents… Mob don’t you ever change
Touichirou's like Shou this is why I don't tell you things
THE GAG OF MOB JUST SLAMMING DIMPLE TO THE FLOOR. ONE YOU NATIONAL TREASURE. FUNNIEST MAN ALIVE.
TOUICHIROU JUST PUNTED DIMPLE OUT OF THE TOWER. SHOU'S WATCHING THIS LIKE WHAT. RITSU + REIGEN + GANG JUST SAW THAT. THIS IS THE ONLY VALID THING THAT TOUICHIROU'S EVER DONE
Now time for some raw quotes:
"If a person wants to move on with his life, he needs to trust other people. If he cannot, then he cannot accomplish anything." Mob was talking about having faith in others' capability to change for the better, but it also applies to him. Can he change? He has to trust in other's perception of himself, of his power usage, otherwise he would end up hurting others again. Else he's just trapped in his trauma. Who's watching over him, to make sure he's not going to go on a rampage like Ritsu's so worried about (and correct to do so?)
"Everyone lacks something. People making up for others' deficiencies is what makes this world go round" - Episode 12, Season 2 (shut up I know it's from the anime)
"Comprehending is different from sympathizing"
"Some people only learn through pain" OH MY GOD MOB
"If no one else taught you about it, then I will." GET 'EM MOB
Mob is getting more controlled and cold as Touichirou loses more control and gets erratic and feels emotions
What's scarier than dying? Losing everyone else
I love the realistic progression of Mob's thoughts. An explosion? An explosion…??!! Is he gonna explode..? OH SHIT HE'S GONNA EXPLODE
Just because Mob hates you doesn't mean he will treat you different because he has class and morals damnit.
The power of heart? nah man, it's the power of broccoli.
At the start of his World Domination, right after the announcement, when everyone's cheering him on, Touichirou is thinking: where is his son, why wasn't he there to support him on? :(
More Suzuki Touichirou / Claw thoughts (unorganized because I gave up lol)
Suzuki promised money and power. 100M Yen (to Joseph) isn't much. Going to assume USD.
Touichirou is mostly in Japan? Or was he scouting for a long time? Shou seems to be based in Japan ("when are you coming back to Japan?") and his dad too.
Cults founded in the past 20 years are part of Claw as funding. Also other powerful people are sponsors hoping to secure a spot in the new world order?
Did Claw fill the power gap after Mogami?
10 foreign mercenaries willing to go with Claw. In the entire world. What is this statistic.
48 YEARS OLD??!! HE STARTED WHEN HE WAS 28?
Touichirou began the official announcement even before his son thought he would (because Shou thought they would be done by then)
Interestingly, the 7th division doesn't know much about the Super 5. Seems like Touichirou really was personally recruiting
TOUICHIROU IS INCREDIBLY SENTIMENTAL AND SILLY IN HIS MOTIVATIONS, EVEN IF HIS METHODS ARE LOGICAL AND RUTHLESS.
Consider: Omurice, hometown, not killing / scarring Shou, conquering the world just to win an argument with his wife
TONKOTSU CITY?!?!?!
Touichirou jokes around and is joked with (kinda) with the Super 5. He's emotionally honest and communicative with them. Informal too. Probably because he doesn't care about their opinion of him.
Shibata isn't an idiot (ish)
Shou rebelled and ran away from home multiple times to avoid attending meetings LOL. And Touichirou just let him, because he eventually came back and life went on. Touichirou probably thought this was just more of the same.
No wonder Shou thinks his dad is cringe, imagine hearing this sort of advice sincerely from his dad for YEARS. Bet his mom heard it from Shou secondhand and was like don't listen to your dad that's some middle school mindset. I know you don't know what middle school is but trust your mother on this. He wasn't like that when I married him but that is why I left.
Touichirou does neglect Shou but wasn't straight up abusing him… until he does rip
And Shou hits right back (verbally I mean), and like dang. Kid has a point there.
Touichirou can do all 5 elements (wind fire ice lightning earth [aka telekinesis])
Even Serizawa knows about Shou's rebelliousness
TIME FOR SOME DISCIPLINE
Well at least Touichirou did his research on espers and governments. Even if he's bad at it
Touichirou is willing to engage and talk to Shou… honestly better than even my parents.
Touichirou wanted the area evacuated to not escalate things that quickly and to prevent infiltration
Did Touichirou force everyone to dress nicely for his bland welcoming parties…
Shou never wins verbally with Touichirou.. ouch.
Was Touichirou a pacifist before? Dude really thought he could conquer the world and get his wife back… basically area man doesn't want to admit he lost the 5-year argument with his wife
Obviously we know why Touichirou flashback-ed to when his wife left. But why did he think about the cat / gentle moment?
The utter "what." of Touichirou's face when Shou casually goes yeah I see mom regularly LOL. Angst DENIED.

Mob Psycho 100 Interview Translation - Character Designer Kameda Yoshimichi - Otome Visual 2017
Summary-style translation for Character Designer Yoshimichi Kameda’s 4 page interview from Otome Visual 2017, regarding elements in the creation of Mob Psycho 100 such as: what inspired this cover art, the influence of fan art in the anime’s creation, Tsubomi’s design, the process behind the package art for the DVDs, and more. Includes some genga. Under read more;
[TN: The reason why I elected to summarise this interview rather than do a full write up is because a lot of the information given gets covered in December 2016′s Animestyle010, in “The Making of Mob Psycho 100.” I typed that one out in full over on twitter but that’s a long interview, and I don’t have the time or energy to reformat it for Tumblr, but if you’re interested in a very in-depth look into how Mob Psycho 100′s anime came to be I’d really recommend checking it out. Direct quotes are given in “” here. Enjoy!]
---
*~The genga illustration for Otome Visual’s cover~*
“With the recent popularity that Skating Anime has had, what’s this - a Shouwa idol collab?! It’s all in the little details in their clothing - their wrinkled shirts, white trousers, black belts - both around their waists and arms.”
*~Kameda’s comments~*
“Can you heaaaar me!! I am currently speaking directly into your braaaain!!! What I’m grateful for with this commission is I was able to design the cover in any way I’d like!! A cover is a reflection of current times, so, of course, I went for ice skating! You wouldn’t be able to find this kind of amazing content in any time period other than now! That’s what I first thought! Like, Mob Psycho 100!! If there’s not a certain Mob Psycho 100-ness present in the art then what’d be the point, so, the characters are being very serious but they’re also pretty laughable. I tried to create a piece of art from which you could hear their voices!!! What’s with it being Shouwa-esque?? Being lame is incredibly cool!!! Huh? Does that describe Mob Psycho 100?? Can’t answer that if you ask!!!! Please feel the amazing Paradise Ginga x Mob Psycho 100-ness here!!!!!!”
---
Kameda describes how he wasn’t sure how best to adapt the manga into an anime format at first, since from the art he was shown he immediately knew it to be very unique - the idea of using Flash to animate the show was raised but quickly shot down
Originally, upon being asked about the show, he based his thoughts on what a web image search for Mob Psycho 100 gave him rather than having the actual manga in hand. “For the most part, the results that came back would be fanart (laughs). It’s a bit strange - at that time, it was difficult to find art uploaded from the manga. If you could find anything, it’d just be art from the covers. So for the most part, an image search of Mob Psycho 100 would just bring you back fanart. A lot of that fanart would be… a shounen in a cool pose wearing a school uniform with smooth bobbed hair & sharp cat-like eyes, sort of like Hiei’s eyes (from Yu Yu Hakusho). Very different from the manga’s art. But when I looked at that art, I thought; this could work. Fanart is, fundamentally, ‘fans drawing what they like’, so I thought, ‘the anime having this kind of art would make the fans happy.’ Well, it didn’t work out that way, obviously. I was told the anime’s art should resemble that of the manga. (Laughs)”
He hadn’t read the manga so all he had for reference was art from volume 1 and the fanart he found online. “But I like things like spirits and urban legends, so seeing Dimple - a floating supernatural fiery ball - and being told the manga touches on the occult caused my interest to soar.”
Says that Teru is the easiest character for him to draw. “He’s overflowing with confidence, so it’s easy to put him into some cool poses. Mob and Ritsu in comparison, not so much. [...] With Reigen, he has a lot of poses that are like, he’s trying to look good. He takes a solid stance. I suppose Spirits & Such has such a shady air to it, and you have to hide that somehow, right? So, Reigen injects confidence into how he presents himself. A model-like stance.”
“The anime is faithful to the manga… ah, actually, Tsubomi-chan was changed with a ‘let’s make her more like a heroine’ conversation. So, I did so, but reading recent events in the manga I can’t picture her in her anime form (laughs). The manga’s Tsubomi isn’t much like a heroine, so I’ve found myself wondering, if we animate up until this part… just how will we approach it? The anime’s Tsubomi is so bright and sparkly, so she wouldn’t have snot hanging from her nose (vol.13 of manga), would she…? (Laughs). Perhaps we went a little too far with making her a heroine. Maybe, if we do season 2, we’ll turn her back into a normal girl (laughs). Well, Tachikawa-san is clever; I think he’ll find a way to make do with her current design.”
---
Picture text: "This is Mezato's first appearance, so I decided to make her cute!! Thank you in advance!!"
Picture text: "That girl was telling me such a stupid story this morning... aidzuchi* isn't easy, you know... I'll just ignore her tomorrow..." [* sounds made to indicate that you're listening to someone speak]
---
Asked about his favourite characters; “I love Mezato Ichi from the Newspaper Club. When I drew her in her character sheet in that pose where she’s holding her camera, I came to see her as being quite cute. So now I focus on her a lot; in fact, when I draw genga I sneakily choose the cuts that have her in them (laughs).”
“I also love Mob. Reigen stands out the most so your eyes naturally jump to him, but I love the balance that Mob has. His heads tall ratio... or rather, his face, and the way his body is proportioned? It makes him lovely. Ritsu is around the same height as Mob, but, how can I put this - the cuteness that Mob has, is lacking in Ritsu… due to the latter being quite standoffish, I suppose (laughs).”
Ritsu’s hair changing through the first season is discussed, and how it is purposefully shortened during the latter half. “I paid attention to making sure his hair was long especially while he was being possessed by Dimple. So it’d resemble thorns.”
“I feel Teru-kun is the most ‘yang’ of all the characters. The rest are more ‘yin’ in nature. Because of this, it’s easy to play around with his expressions - he’s fun to draw. Speaking in terms of Dragonball, he’s kind of like Mob Psycho 100’s Vegeta (laughs).”
“In episode 9, Dimple possesses one of Claw’s security guards, right? I don’t really understand why that security guard is so popular.” Q: What do you mean? “Because he’s just some middle-aged dude (laughs). He doesn’t even appear for long…”
After discussing the huge amount of SG!Dimple commissions received: “Unlike SG!Dimple, I don’t really get asked to draw Shou-kun. With this commission I thought to myself, I /have/ to include him here, and so I added him in. The initial brief excluded him.”
Asked about moments that stuck with him; “When Teru chokes Mob in episode 5. [...] Mob’s pained expression as he’s being choked is good, but Teru-kun’s face shows us… envy, jealousy, distress, anxiety.”
“Also, the ‘super real Reigen’ sequence from episode 12. The tension between Reigen and Sakurai is funny, but the art itself has had me laughing since production. It’s funny no matter how many times I look at it!”
Kameda’s idea to have the characters make number shapes for the volume art came from him watching ‘Tonneruzu no Minasan no Okage deshita’, specifically the ‘Mojimoji-kun’ segment of the show (where they try to make numbers from their bodies)
Volume 6’s cover art was first planned to have a whole ensemble of characters, but Kameda changed his mind on this - “if we do a second season, we can leave that for volume 12 (laughs).”
Volume 4's cover was originally planned to feature only Onigawara and Gouda, but Kameda found himself wanting to include the rest of the body improvement club
Regarding the pose we see on vol 6’s package art, “My original thoughts for that cover were to have Reigen and Mob in a ‘hell wheel’ pose, like, Mob pulling Reigen’s legs and arms… but that wouldn’t be very fitting for the final volume.”
His message to the readers; “Thank you for your support! With sales, the ‘this is popular!’ message gets conveyed, and the more support you give us, then there’s no doubt we’ll be able to produce season 2 and season 3!! Season 2 relies on your support. It’s in your hands - thank you!!”

cql of course but if someone's already asked this... mp100 :)
whew sorry I got to this one last floor. thank you for sending cql :) but I haven't talked about mob in a minute so let's do that one!
Favorite character: MOB MY BOY. phenomental writing. one of the characters of all time honestly
Second favorite character: ritsu :) I have grown very fond of teru as well
Least favorite character: can you believe reigen's hovering over here I just think the fanbase has ruined him with being super obnoxious about him and making the story about him rather than mob. I think he's a good character but I can't even tell if people are joking when they call him hot. but this must go to touchirou for being a piece of shit in every way
The character I’m most like: hmm mob or serizawa. more like serizawa actually I'm closer in age to him...wild how I watched/read this when I was about halfway between them in age (21?) and now im like oh thank god serizawa's also lost a lot of his life to his fear of the outside world and being different and he's still able to put himself out there and live his life even though he's not going to get back those years because it takes courage but he also has people around him supporting him
Favorite pairing: not really into any romances for mp100, especially not with mob. I do think he's bi and that ritsu and shou and teru and tome are all gay though. I would like ritsu and shou together more if they were't literally 13
Least favorite pairing: almost any of them lol. besides the obvious I just do not see mob and tome? they're friends. they're good platonic friends. also she's got crazy lesbian energies imo
Favorite moment: the first time we see his 100% that shit is breathtaking...mogami arc was really good too but despite what most of tha fanbase latched onto, it was good not for the darkness and tragedy, but for the hope and faith in people and the growth that's possible. also the entire time mob was asleep in wd arc that was amazing
Rating out of 10: 9.5/10. a nearly perfect story, but trips up on a relative lack of female characters, ONE being kind of weird and moralistic about college students, a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion to shou's arc (imo), and transmisogyny in an early arc. also I think some of the battle scenes are too drawn-out and the early claw villains in world domination arc were a bit unpleasant to read about. but overall it's this beautiful story of this young man accepting and embracing his differences and growing up and finding hope and strength and making connections to others and anyone who decides to read this and then make gore art of the kids or angsty AUs or paint reigen as some kind of savior just fucking miss the point pathetically badly can you tell I still harbor some rage from the boom of its popularity on tumblr. it's about kindness! it's a series about kindness between people!!!
anyway mp100 good, thank you!!!

My experience with MP100, Reigen & Mob’s relationship
My dudes, I swear I didn’t expect to get so attached to this story at all. I was looking for a cute story that gives me a good laugh, but oh boy :’D
I watched the two seasons of the anime to get a taste, and couldn’t get enough of it ;D so I devoured the manga from where the anime left off on the same night. Before I knew it, I was sobbing myself to sleep...
Now I am just sitting tight and waiting for the third season of the anime to finally bring to life the BEST part of the manga yet.
Overall rating: Heartwarming x Maturity x Fights x Good laughs = 1000%.
(You have been blessed by the rock-paper-scissors god Reigen)
Aside from the tender-hearted-but-somehow-badass Mob and his refreshingly charismatic master Reigen, all the characters are adorable and distinctive, from the sassy Teru, to the soft little bro Ritsu, to the hilarious evil spirit Dimple and the former enemies “Claw”. Each of these characters share a unique bond with our good boy Mob. But my absolute favourite would have to be the teacher-student/ guardian-child relationship between Reigen and Mob.
A rather unlikely combination, Mob - a powerful esper who struggles to control his own power, and Reigen - a self-proclaimed psychic who most of the time bullshits his way through to make himself more powerful than he actually is. Their first meeting, which became an important milestone that they would go back to again and again, started with a lie Reigen came up with to try and make something of himself. Subsequently, Reigen learned of Mob’s powers and started using them as he saw fit.
And yet, Mob’s journey through growing up and dealing with his own terrifying powers couldn’t have been the same without Reigen. At the end of the day, it was Reigen’s words and kind gestures that taught Mob the most important things, the things he needed to hear the most. Reigen was the one who told Mob that having powers didn’t make him any less human, and something that was echoed in the anime’s opening songs: “Your life is your own.” It was also Reigen’s words that Mob came back to again and again, which served as the guide for his actions. Reigen is also the only person who witnessed Mob’s growth, from a troubled and vulnerable child to a capable young man who had outgrown Reigen’s protection. And in the same way, Mob was the one person who saw Reigen’s true goodness and believed in him without fail. The basis for their meeting might have been a lie, but their bond was not.
(Contains spoilers from the manga below!)
There are plenty of events in the anime and the manga that suggested what different outcomes could have come about if Mob didn’t receive the right guidance and motivation from an adult. Mob’s volatile state and his impressionable mind could have been moulded to follow a path of hatred and destruction. However, it was Reigen’s kindness that guided Mob towards tenderness and appreciation for the value in people.
And likewise, Reigen wouldn’t have come so far if Mob didn’t walk into his office asking for a listening ear. As much as Reigen’s words saved Mob, Mob also brings a new light into Reigen’s mundane life and rekindled the fire in him.
Bored with his everyday life and having lost the curiosity for anything, Reigen was aimlessly passing by until Mob walked in, trembling with fear but also filled with hope. Out of admiration for the young boy and his natural powers, Reigen started wanting to become something more, something special. The way he chose to go about it though, was to carry on a big lie.
Mob’s feelings towards Reigen’s deception are an essential part of their relationship. As he grew and learned to accept his own feelings, Mob started to realize how much he had depended on Reigen’s words and overlooked his master’s flaws. Until the end, though, Mob didn’t forget the times Reigen had saved him and stood by him, and his forgiveness filled Reigen with hope the same way Reigen’s words had picked him up years before.
That’s exactly what made chapter 100 of the manga hit so hard... Mob is forced to confront both sides of himself, the “Mob” who wants to preserve the tenderness and be close to people, and the “Shigeo” who wants to break the restraint on his fearsome power.
“Mob” wants to believe in Reigen because he trusts that Reigen genuinely cares for him and will not want to do him harm. His power, however, forces him to confront the lies Reigen has told all along to make use of him.
This scene is heartrending because Reigen has once again said something Mob/Shigeo needed to hear at this exact moment. “This” - the fearsome power - was something Mob was struggling with because he didn’t come to terms with it. He tried to suppress this side of himself, fearing that other people would avoid him should they learn his true identity. For the first time, Reigen, who had constantly given Mob advice without truly understanding the roots of his struggle, started to understand. And Reigen also realized how he had been using Mob all this while without knowing how much Mob was going through alone.
(ASHKJKL THE FEELS)
In that moment, all was bared and both Reigen and Mob had the chance to finally confront themselves. I personally think of all people, Reigen hated to disappoint Mob the most, and that is why it took him so much courage to admit to Mob that he was lying all along. But he mustered that courage in order to tell Mob something important that would have changed both of them. Once again, Reigen gave Mob what he needed the most at that point: validation, understanding, acceptance, reassurance, encouragement.
