Psycho Analysis: Telence T. D’Arby

(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)

Telence T. D’Arby is a character who always was going to be overshadowed by his brother. Let’s be honest here, this guy never had a chance. The older D’Arby was a gentleman, with class, cleverness, and a truly intense and memorable poker showdown with Jotaro… Trying to even come close to matching a character like that would be a fool’s errand, lightning just doesn’t strike twice.

But in his own way, Telence is actually quite enjoyable. It helps that in a lot of ways he is meant to be a foil to his own brother. Daniel is merciful in his soul stealing; Telence allows his victims to suffer. Daniel is honest about his cheating; Telence pretends to have honor but is an even filthier cheater. And most importantly: Daniel is intelligent and has a quick wit, while Telence is a bit of an idiot.

Actor: Everyone’s favorite Phantom Thief and announcer Xander Mobus portrays Telence, and if there is ever anyone cool enough to play the brother of a man voiced by Cam “Liquid Snake” Clarke, it’s Mobus. This guy is just good in everything he does, and Telence is absolutely no exception, Mobus breathing life into him and giving him that smug, arrogant air the character deserves.

Motivation/Goals: As one of the last obstacles before DIO, he is basically here to guard the house in case anyone gets by Kenny G and Pet Shop. One would think such a position can only mean he has serious loyalty to DIO, and said loyalty would likely come from allowing D’Arby a nice stream of victims, as this psychopath likes to collect souls. But unlike his brother who would turn his victims into unliving poker chips, Telence turns them into totally aware dolls that he likes to listen to the despair of. Basically, Telence is a complete and utter bastard, with none of the more honorable qualities his brother had, and DIO gives him plenty of opportunities to relish in this.

...But then DIO later says that Telence could never understand his failure after he loses due to not being fanatically loyal to DIO as Vanilla Ice is. So perhaps Telence sees DIO as a means to relish in his crueler side while DIO sees him as a useful pawn, much as he sees most of his followers.

Personality: Telence is a psychopathic manchild who is smug, insufferable, a liar, a cheater, and a disgusting bastard who enjoys the suffering of others – in other words, Telence is just your typical gamer. Joking aside, he is a pretty effective villain, and a nice contrast to his suave and classy brother, and it’s definitely nice to know that Araki didn’t just try and rehash Daniel despite their Stands being very similar, but it really makes you wonder… does Telence shower?

Final Fate: After Jotaro and Joseph manage to pull one over on him, revealing him to be less skilled than his brother despite his gloating, he uses his Stand to find out if Jotaro is going to “do the Ora Ora thing.” Joseph gives him his answer:

“YES! YES! YES! OH MY GOD.”

Best Scene: I do want to say his defeat, just because it is oh so satisfying after watching him be such a smug ass the whole time.

Best Quote: His exchange with Jotaro after he has been bested may not be on the same level as his brother, but it is still pretty enjoyable:

Jotaro: Answer this. Will I hit you with my right fist or decide to deck you with my left? I'd love to know.

Terrence D'Arby: Well, since you're asking, you'll use... your right one?

Jotaro's soul: No! No! No! No! No!

Terrence D'Arby: Then... your left?

Jotaro's soul: No! No! No! No! No!

Terrence D'Arby: You're... not gonna use both, are you?

Jotaro's soul: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! YES!

Terrence D'Arby: Are you going to do the "Ora Ora" thing?!

And as noted above, Joseph gives him the answer.

Final Thoughts & Score: One of my favorite things about the D’Arby brothers is their concept, what with the soul-stealing gamer angle. I mentioned before in my Psycho Analysis on Daniel that it seemed like Yu-Gi-Oh may have drawn some inspiration from him, but I think Telence makes me honestly believe that. Magic: The Gathering certainly inspired the now-famous Duel Monsters that most of the series revolves around, but I think the D’Arby brothers definitely had a hand in inspiring the Shadow Games; Telence in particular reeks of soul-stealing villains like Pegasus or Yami Marik. It could just be coincidence… but one of the most influential shonen series of all time being the inspiration for aspects of another beloved and popular shonen series isn’t exactly a huge stretch of the imagination.

I love Telence, for sure, though I do think he just falls short of his brother, though honestly, who wouldn’t? His episode, personality, and voice acting are all definitely on point, and he serves as something of a breather before the brutal showdown with Vanilla Ice (though he’s most certainly not a breather villain as his stakes are pretty high), and his ultimate defeat is incredibly satisfying, but beyond having the bad luck of being in his brother’s shadow he’s also sandwiched between Pet Shop and Vanilla Ice – two of the best Stand users in the entire part.

I feel confident that Telence deserves an 8/10. I definitely lean more towards nine, but regardless of the score he keeps the fine quality of the Egyptian god Stands high and allows them to go out on a high note, as the only Stand users left after him are the musically-themed Vanilla Ice with his Stand Cream and then the final card in the tarot deck with DIO’s World. Good on Telence for that then! He may not be as cool as his brother, but he certainly didn’t let his brother down in the quality department.

The real question is: Is it “Telence” or “Terence?” We may never know.

Jeez... Still no EVENT-SPECIFIC asks?... Tch. Fine, I'LL make the first one. But since we're also including other people, I want to get both D'arby brothers involved. Two things I'm curious about, one more specific than the other: 1. their interactions towards women (I--I'm just curious, don't judge me!... Also, I've only seen Terrence interact w/ a living doll, so...) and 2. what their usual interactions towards Master Dio are like.

((( AIGHT, LET’s GET THIS STARTED )))

Telence T. D’Arby

- He usually doesn’t go looking for women, And mostly avoids people in general. But when one approaches him, He can be a bit snarky at first. He might warm up to them overtime depending on their personality.

- He can be a bit awkward after warming up to a woman, He may stutter between words. What he usually does is pretend that everything is fine.

- Telence will insist that they are being silly if they ever do bring up his odd actions, distracting himself with a portable hand-held game.

- He would sometimes ignore what they are saying, and lie about just not being able to hear them

- He would definitely bring up video games at some point in a conversation, It doesn’t matter if they are interested themselves. He would continue the conversation for as long as he could if he was given the chance.

- Telence would bring up voodoo magic, usually if they were deeply into a conversation. He would even be willing to bring up the darkest of voodoo magic, even the sacrificial offerings that would be involved.

- He would be very quiet in Dio’s presence, nodding to orders that are given, and doing them almost immediately. He would shake and sweat with a high intensity, stuttering in his words when he tried to speak to his Lord.

- He would usually never question anything that Dio told him, but, there are rare moments when he gets curious. Dio scorns him for it, but accepts his curiosity anyway.

- Telence would sometimes ramble on about games to Dio, Dio just pretended to listen to him. He would occasionally bring up a game about “mining and crafting”

Daniel J. D’Arby

- He actually doesn’t mind being around women, he quite enjoys it. For whatever reason it seems to be apart of “the gambling experience”

- He is really awful at flirting, but he does it anyway. He usually does really cheesy pick up lines, which don’t ever work.

- Daniel tries to pull them into gambling, he would choose to ask them if they’d like to bet their soul. He does it just for the thrill, even if he truly does like them. 

- His gambling habits would be out of control in the game, he would sometimes bet far too much. Just so he could see if he could pull off a win.

- He would act surprisingly kind, but liked to brag a lot about how many times he’s won at gambling. He would bring it up randomly in conversations as well.

- Daniel wouldn’t act the most..STABLE..During encounters with Dio. He would usually act like he is having a nervous breakdown, Dio just staring at him as Daniel breaks down into tears out of nowhere
