2024 Ice Challenge Graz Austria November 9-10, 2024
FD
Martinez/Bennett are a Novi team - he skated juniors in Carol Lane's camp. Martinez is new to me, but she has a nice dance quality to her movement and extension. they're using one of the same pieces of music as the Mrazeks. the elements look taken from a number of well known programs (like the last stationary lift looks like a P/C one or like Hannah and Ye's from Umbrellas). i guess with newer or younger teams, it's not as important to have a program that feels unique, it's a vehicle for learning
Shilling/Baeten look more assured, there's a confidence coming in which is really nice to see. they had their strongest RD yet
Hancock/Fourati - he and Alexia Paganini were partners in juvenile skating for the US? didn't know she ever ice danced. H/F have a Depeche Mode FD where the first song is kind of dirge like and draggy. the program picks up when it goes into Personal Jesus. i've seen people say it's an ice dance trick to use a long skirt to mask knee bend that doesn't match or isn't soft, and it feels a little bit like that here
Koncius/Shchepetov were much stronger in the FD than the RD - it's a Jean-Luc Romeo & Juliet program, the version with Kissing You. i don't love this music, but this program works really well for them - it's almost like Jean-Luc watched Madi and Zach have their R&J season and had thoughts about what a program to this piece could look like
Terreaux/Perron - another Zazoui, Olivier Schoenfelder team - funny how once you learn about someone you see their name everywhere. the French schools may have techniques in common, but aesthetically they're so different. maybe it's that Villard des Lans has such a specific sensibility and look. but the Zazoui school is much more classic. T/P have something fundamentally pleasing in their skating motion but they also skate so far apart in hold, what's with that
Pham/Spirodinov - Lorraine McNamara's a far stronger skater and personality, but she overshadowed Anton so much, and their programs were so iffy. makes me sad that she's without a partner. Anton's better matched here, and better packaging makes so much difference
Leia and Pietro won bronze!! i'm so happy for them - they had a great RD, their personal best score. the FD was lovely, but they had a twizzle glitch - consistency and finding their own way to attack their programs as they build their confidence under pressure seems like the work in progress. this was an exciting competition for them - they’ve always had musicality and sensitivity, and they look stronger
Cui/Rogers - though black swan feels kind of stale at this point, they look like they have ballet training, and the music does a lot of lifting, so i can see why this was the choice. they have nice carriage though it looks a little rigid. maybe more ease, flow and speed will come over time. they're only 18/22 yo, and they look like a good match. their Jacksons RD with her in a sparkly gold dress, can't help feeling like Novi copy/pastes somewhat for all but Z/K. they scored very close to Holly and Jason so will be interesting to watch how they progress. US dance is so very very crowded
Holly and Jason had some level issues and won the FD by only .11 in a competition that should have been theirs more easily. C/R hit all their levels - a really successful debut internationally. but the judging. lol the Bosnian judge gave Cui/Rogers 124.28 for their FD including a 9.0 in Presentation PCS. compare to Jeroen Prins, a very experienced judge from NED who gave them 98.71. there shouldn't be a 25+ point spread in a panel, that's ridiculous 😅💀

2022 Nebelhorn Trophy entry # 22
I am so tired of this one Youtube user that is commenting on every video that they want to see more of C/Y. I don’t think C/Y are all that great.
Short dance
Terreaux/Perron(FRA)
Thoughts: Lou’s dress. I’m not so sure about the sleeves. But I love the gold sparkles around the leg slit. Her hairstyle is maybe a 5 out of ten.
Harris/Chan(AUS)
Thoughts: Holly, you always manage to impress me with your outfits. I knew Jason had facial hair, but I had forgotten what it looked like. I don’t like it.
Free dance
Terreaux/Perron(FRA)
Thoughts: they need more consistency with their speed. I liked the front of Lou’s dress more than the back.

Test skates  (Czech test skates, French masters)
Note to self: “I don’t have to note it down, I’ll remember” - this never ever works. On the other hand, it will be a short post :D
Czech test skates
I’ll just want to mention some skates I liked.  1) I’ll gush over them some time later, but the Taschler siblings are really improving so quicky and so much and their new RD and FD are amazing. They are ready to enter the senior competitions in style.  2) Eliška Březinová and her La La Land FP. Everyone has their fave warhorses, right? And La La Land makes me happy. That’s all. It also suits Eliška and her yellow dress looks great.
3) Georgii Reshtenko. Michal wasn’t there, Matyáš Bělohradský wasn’t there... but Georgii saved the day!
4) We can’t forget Damian Malczyk because Black Betty! He certainly is Javi’s fan. (part 1, part 2)
French masters
(The initial note applies here even more, but I’ll try)
1) Kevin Aymoz. Kevin really is a unique skater. The moves, the way he just “is” on the ice, I love it. FP - Lay it on me.
2) Pairs! Cleo Hamon & Denis Strekalyn and Coline Keriven & Noel Antoine Pierre. It won’t be that easy for them on the international stage, they’ll have to take the lead instead of comfortably growing up in the shadow of more experienced pairs but they can do it!
3) Ice dance. France has so many great ice dance teams that sometimes I can’t wrap my mind around it. LIke how??? Of course, Papadakis/Cizeron and Lauriault/LeGac stayed in Canada but the participants didn’t give you much chance to think about who was missing because it was really awesome.  There were Demougeot/Le Mercier and Terreaux/Perron in juniors ... and then in seniors Adelina Galyavieva/Louis Thauron (wd after the RD), Evgenia Lopareva/Geoffrey Brissaud (technically third and fourth French teams but so goood) ...
And the absolutely biggest highlight of the ice dance event and I dare say it will be one of my favourite dances of the whole season: Natacha Lagouge/Arnaud Caffa -  FD Sposa son disprezzata. The stylisation, the costumes, the storytelling, the fun, That’s theatre on ice! That’s what I want to see!

2024 Ice Challenge RD in Graz, Austria
somehow all teams at this event in Austria except one (Terreaux/Perron who train with Muriel Zazoui) train in North America - the rest represent Novi, IAM, IAMO, MIDA. Hancock/Fourati train with Gregory/Petukhov (the coaches for Tali/Lafornara and Aboian/Veselukhin) but maybe also train with Valter Rizzo. there are 2 other senior B's going on this weekend (whyy lol) so a lot of teams went to either Denkova-Staviski or Pavel Roman instead
Igor, Tanith, Kaitlin Hawayek (!), Justin Trojek for IAMO are at the boards
Holly and Jason are the most experienced at this level and in line to win if they're solid tomorrow. both IAMO teams scored PB's for their RDs today 🥳 Cui/Rogers had the highest base value

someone did the math for GP alternates- these are the teams below the ones who were guaranteed spots. the alternates who’ve already received an invite are noted. feds don’t have to invite in order as there are other factors like the team being their country’s only representative (like Pinchuk/Pogorielov), or if they’re a host pick
US seems to be waiting on summer competition results to decide their SkAm host pick. F/D and W/T are the top teams without a Grand Prix
Alternates List -  1-10 Flores/Desyatov Janse van Rensburg/Steffan (NHK) Dupayage/Nabais (GPdF) {Harris/Chan - if they're still skating} Fabbri/Ayer (SCI) Wolfkostin/Tsarevski Soucisse/Firus Tkachenko/Kiliakov (SkAm) Bekker/Hernandez Val/Kazimov Manni/Roethlisberger
11-20 Bashynska/Beaumont Pinchuk/Pogorielov (Finlandia) Yoshida/Morita (NHK) Lagouge/Caffa Nosovitskaya/Nosovitskiy Mazingue/Gaidajenko Grimm/Savitskiy (SCI) Reitan/Majorov Tanaka/Nishiyama (NHK) Simova/Aksenov
21-30 Hensen/Lickers Ramanauskaite/Kizala Terreaux/Perron Gauthier/Thieren Larson/Kapran Dozzi/Papetti Matthaei/Liebers Ignateva/Szemko Nguyen/Giang Karnes/Carr
31-32 Ichilov/Kravchenko Tali/Lafornara

Lily and Nathan did well!
feels like scores are low - Taschlers were disappointed with a 73, Mrazeks so fast, 72 - if they’re saving room for D/S 😑
several withdrawals- Manni/Roethlisberger are here but their skates are not 😢 Van Rensburg/Steffan, Terreaux/Perron also WD

someone on FS Universe drew up the list of Grand Prix dance alternates - these are the teams below the ones who were guaranteed spots. If they've been given an assignment it's in parentheses:
Ice Dance 1-10 Smart/Dieck (SkAm) McNamara/Spiridonov (France) Ignateva/Szemko (Espoo) Wang/Liu (SCI) Brown/Brown (SCI) Orihara/Pirinen (Espoo) Dupayage/Nabais (France) Bashynska/Beaumont (Espoo) Harris/Chan (SkAm) Bekker/Hernandez Ice Dance 11-20 Fabbri/Ayer (SCI) Lanaghan/Razgulajevs (SCI) Komatsubara/Koleto (NHK) Manni/Roethlisberger Nosovitskaya/Nosovitskiy Holubtsova/Bielobrov Lagouge/Caffa Simova/Aksenov Gauthier/Thieren Dozzi/Papetti Ice Dance 21-30 Hensen/Lickers Leccardi/Dalla Torre Terreaux/Perron Polibina/Golovishnikov Bronsard/Richmond Hancock/Fourati Carhart/Kolosovskyi Azroian/Gruzdev Ramanauskaite/Kizala Pucherova/Lysak Ice Dance 31 Nauryzova/Datiev
So if there are openings at a GP, the fed can choose from the block of 10. They can choose to give a 2nd GP to teams before some have any. Not sure how it works that they'd reach down to the 2nd block. And it looks like the lower blocks can get a host pick but probably wouldn't get a spot otherwise

2021 Open De Andorra entry #25
Senior free dance
Dupayage/Nabais(FRA)
Thoughts: Marie fell, poor Marie.
Fournier/Kam(NZL)
Thoughts: this was so fun. Charlotte’s outfit fit the song really well. I like watching them.
Terreaux/Perron(FRA)
Thoughts: Noe took a while to find his character.
Luft/Pfisterer(GER)
Thoughts: loved the ending pose. And Lara’s gorgeous legs of course.

2021 Open De Andorra Entry #11
Senior short dance
Terreaux/Perron(FRA)
Thoughts: Lou’s hair contrasted too much with her outfit. And Noe seemed to have trouble staying in character.
Demougeot/Mercier(FRA)
Thoughts: it took a minute for these two to find their rhythm. It’s funny, I remember when they were juniors it was Theo that caught my attention. But now as they grow, it seems to have switched to Loicia’s swingy ponytail and her gorgeous wrists.
Fournier/Kam(NZL)
Thoughts: I was hoping I’d get to see these two again. Because the first time I was just in a daze, like New Zealand does ice dance now?! Now the initial shock has worn off and I stan these two. Love them so much.
Fear/Gibson(GBR)
Thoughts: Lewis’s V was too deep. And one of his twizzle positions looked off.
Ipolito/Russell(LAT)
Thoughts: not a fan of the rotational lift
Lopusova/Kazimov(GER)
Thoughts: I remember this eyesore dress. I just forgot it belonged to Victoria.

Dozzi and Papetti at Egna Dance Trophy in Egna, Italy Feb 9-12, 2023
This is the Taschlers to win. There should be a gap after them. Then there are a few teams in the mix- Manni/Roethlisberger, Terreaux/Perron, Leia and Pietro and maybe Luft/Pfisterer
This competition helps decide the second Italian team to go to Worlds. Manni/Roethlisberger were 2nd at their Nationals and got the slot to go to Europeans, so it's a long shot for Leia and Pietro. But they want to show up here and show their fed their progress since December

Denis Ten Memorial Entry #15
Senior Short Dance
Nauryzova/Datiev(KAZ)
Thoughts: I thought I was over how annoying this urban/hip hop theme for the rhythm dance is but I guess not. Gaukhar has a pretty smile but Boyisangur’s outfit looks like practice clothes, but it still manages to fit the urban/hip hop theme? Why?!
Skoptcova/Aleshin(RUS)
Thoughts: somehow Kirill manages to pull off to pull off that mustard colored jacket. Even though the blonde in Anastasia’s hair seems to be having trouble staying, it does give her ponytail this gorgeous silvery color. Pretty😍
Terreaux/Perron(FRA)
Thoughts: the strings on Noe’s shirt. I know they were supposed to make it look like a hoodie so that it fit the urban/hip hop them but I would think the strings would get in the way.
Nazarova/Nikitin(UKR)
Thoughts: their speed is just crazy and how fluid their lifts are. Even the curve lift which was a little shaky in parts. But it looked very difficult so points for taking some extra risk.
