//HISTORY'S FINEST\\ @lunaetis //Scarf & Dehya\\
IT'S 1962. Madison SQUARE GARDEN is filled to the brim with over FIFTEEN THOUSAND PEOPLE, for a BIRTHDAY party is being celebrated- but not just ANY birthday party. It's the hottest day in May, reaching a record temperature of over ninety-nine degrees, but nothing's hotter than the guests, the festivities, and the proceedings about to unfold on EARTH. It was one of the most EXPENSIVE Parties in history- and it'd live in infamy. It was in essence, a celebration- as well as a fundraiser for the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. With members paying at least one-thousand dollars for a seat. The details on the technical efforts of the party escape the tour guide, this go around- as the guests about to arrive are here for the thrills alone, and not for any reason that would provide any political benefit.
THOSE GUESTS IN REFERENCE, appear via a BLUE BOX that materializes within the halls of MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. The Box is labeled police, and is relatively short- with instructions labeled on that read 'PULL TO OPEN'. However, the door is pulled inward when it opens- and a patch of silver hair and a pair of bright blue eyes poke out of the box. "Right on time! We've got about thirty minutes before the entertainment starts!" THE DOCTOR exited, waving a leatherbound wallet in his hand, "If we're lucky, I might even be able to bluff a way into a front-row seat for us." He dusts himself off with a burgundy fur-felt fedora with a narrow brim, before placing it over his hair.
THE DOCTOR was wearing a plum-colored overcoat that went down to the knees, as well as a pair of dark purple cargo pants, dark brown sneakers, and a dress shirt with a burgundy waistcoat and a dark violet neck cravat. His trademark scarf was a sight to behold, as well. It appeared to be a variation of the version he normally wore, knitted in terracotta, burgundy, and plum chenille with double striped borders at each join. It went all the way down to his knees- appeared thicker and was overall more vibrant in its design. The Doctor turned back into the Tardis and shouted- not in an annoyed manner, but just so the person traveling WITH HIM could hear him properly.
"Come, come now- if we dawdle around here any longer they might think we're a part of the entertainment!"

all hands on deck [preview]
a part two to rock the boat
As she retrieved one of the ice-cool, condensation-laced beers from the very centre of the wooden table, Kenzie peered up at him with her mischievous, amber eyes — gently nudging his ankle with the very tip of her well-worn, off-white Converse, “don’t get too comfortable, Maybank, we’ve got a score to settle.” A playful smirk upturned the corners of her full, rosy lips as her languid gaze travelled slowly from the teal-eyed, shaggy-haired blonde, over her exposed shoulder, to the now unoccupied pool table that stood in the very centre of the slight platform beside them.
A low, throaty, but hearty chuckle rippled through his robust, t-shirt clad chest as he took a nonchalant sip of his cold, bitter-tasting beer, a similar, sprightly smirk quirking the corners of his thin, chapped lips upwards, “what score? I win every time.” His tone was light-heartedly incredulous as the broad flats of his toned, squared-off shoulders rose and fell with each soft but amused laugh. He felt the burning glare of her scolding, unimpressed expression pierce his skin, before giving a lackadaisical gesture towards the vacant pool table with one hand — the other, calloused palm coiled around the green-tinted glass of his beer bottle in a loose but secure hold. “Fine, I’ll play along, but don’t go all sulky on me when you lose for the millionth time.”
“I don’t sulk,” Kenzie rebutted his statement adamantly as she swiftly stood from the uncomfortably rigid, rickety chair — adjusting the slightly bunched-up denim of her enticingly short, black shorts, “I’m just not enthusiastic about your win.” Taking her freshly-opened bottle of Heineken with her, she made her way through the cramped, obstacle course of rogue tables and chairs — audaciously slinking her way through the bustling crowd of bar-goers as she did so. “But I’m going to win this time, I’m telling you. You’re going down, Jesse James Maybank. You’re gonna eat a big, ol’ slice of humble pie.”
His attentive, cerulean eyes fixated almost instantly on her voluptuous, perky ass — that was perfectly accentuated by the tight, but rigid, denim material of her shorts — as he obediently followed suit, observing intently as her hips swayed with a subtle seductiveness, “I know what I’d rather be eating instead.” His voice was deep and gravelly, and an air of flirtatiousness echoed throughout his suggestive words before dissipating into the mindless, drunken chattering that lingered within the background. He watched on, entertained, as her neck snapped backwards with a rapid motion — her dark, terracotta eyes boring deep into his with a fire-like glower, serving as an unspoken warning to honour their previous agreement. A second, imperious grin consumed his sun-drenched complexion as he stared back haughtily, “some shrimp and grits. Loser buys.”
“Get your wallet ready,” she uttered lowly, returning her focused vision back to the unoccupied pool table before her.
“For what? I’m not going to be the one buying dinner tonight, sweetcheeks,” he quipped a playfully sarcastic response as he casually discarded of his freshly-opened beer atop the high, wooden ledge littered in thin, cardboard beer mats that ran the length of the entire back wall. With the same brazenly dauntless smirk contorting his defined, stubble-lined features, he picked up one of the pink, well-used chalk cubes that sat absent-mindedly beside his beer, before coolly reaching for one of the longer, varnished pool cues and masterfully rubbing the indented chalk cube against the very tip of the pool cue, “I’d say ladies first, but the scratches and bite marks on my back say that you’re everything but so I think it’s fair game if I take the first shot.”
“Shark. Bait,” Kenzie spat lowly but meaningfully through a tightly clenched jaw and gritted teeth — her tongue abundantly laced with venom as she sent an evident warning shot at the tousle-haired blonde.

ROSIE SOLARES in WHEN THE UNIVERSE RATTLES
Keep an eye on your valuables.
Rosie appears in several stories of mine. This profile is for a slice-of-life science fiction story I’ve been working on, tentatively titled When the Universe Rattles.
Name: Roselito Bruno “Rosie” Solares
Age: 36 (51 cycles)
Gender: Cis male
Appearance: Tall as fuck (6’5”), auburn hair, brown skin like terracotta. Boyishly disheveled. Generally scruffy-looking. Slim build. Soft brown eyes, long lashes, lazy smile. Fake teeth, but missing his left canine. Handsome. Cybernetic left arm, an older model (though he’s made some modifications). Almost always has scruff on his jaw. Covered in miscellaneous scars. Often wears older Earth Prime clothes like bomber jackets, jeans, and t-shirts. Cleans up nice, looks sexy with his hair pushed back. Left ear pieced once in the lobe, where he wears a single gold hoop.
Background: Rosie Solares is, in one word, mysterious. A petty criminal hailing from Earth Prime (current year 2104), Rosie is a gifted mechanic with a concentration on cybernetic enhancements and prosthetics. Former hobo, current nomad. Local pickpocket. Says he’s ‘passing through’ Station 66, a self-contained city orbiting a young star, but he’s been living there for a cycle and a half already. Could be a retired pirate.
Personality: Likable as hell and charming enough to get your guard down, Rosie is sneaky and mischievous and not afraid to manipulate a target. His friendliness and lax nature are genuine and he’ll go out of his way to help someone in need, but no guarantee he won’t swipe their credstick the second he knows where their wallet is. Rosie has a skewed sense of loyalty and questionable morals, but he’ll always do what he thinks is right, even if the end justifies the means. He’s playful and romantic with partners, yet mindful to never get too attached. If you think he’s your friend, he’s probably not. If you know he’s your friend, he probably is. But you can never be too sure.
Hobbies: Botany (spices, marijuana, other edible plants), cooking, gambling, traveling, tinkering
Listen to: Young the Giant, Green Day, Foster the People, AJJ

Here Are Some Reasons Why You Should Choose A Water Bottle Carefully
The water bottle is an item that few of us put a lot of thought into, but this ignorance might hurt us in the future when we suffer from dehydration or other health issues.
To avoid dehydration, most people purchase plastic water bottles at convenience stores. It could cause hormonal imbalances due to the plastic's BPA compounds.
The single-use plastic water bottles harmful for the health of a person however, they are also harmful to the environment since pollution from plastic bottles is now a huge issue.
It is essential to take care to choose your water bottle to avoid any health issues and minimize the environmental impact. Ellementry has stylish and healthy water bottles.
These are the most compelling reasons to pick a water bottle for your everyday use.
Environmental concerns
Single-use plastics have been at the heart of the rising pollution caused by plastics, so any step taken to avoid single-use plastic like water bottles could prevent many of the waste items from being disposed of in landfills or even worse than the oceans.
Health issues
When you pour water into your steel bottle or glass bottle, the risk of dehydration dramatically decreases and there won't be any danger of BPA chemicals leaching into your body.
Quality control and no risk of unknown ingredients inside the bottle of water.
Because you are the one refilling your water bottle, you can control what type of water that you drink. Instead of relying on large companies to refill our water bottles or drinking tap water that is unsafe It is recommended to purchase an effective filtration system and carry your water bottle wherever you go. This can reduce the risk of acquiring foreign pathogens in the water that you drink.
Saving money
The cost of buying bottled water each day could be a drain on the wallet over time which isn't essential and can easily be fixed. Buying a reusable water bottle will cost you much less in the long run than purchasing bottled water every day.
Long-term usage
It is possible to reuse single-use plastic bottles of water you can find in the supermarket However, it's likely to begin to break down after a couple of months. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase one of these reusable water bottles that would last you for a very long period of.
Aesthetically pleasing
The water bottles that are sold in the market are so conventional that we just glance at them and don't really notice it, whereas the reusable bottles come in so many different designs and colors that you are able to pick one that suits your needs.
Monitor the amount of water that is consumed
Most people nowadays because of their hectic lives don't drink sufficient amounts of water to stay adequately hydrated, so by keeping the bottle that is reusable in front of their faces, it can encourage them to drink more fluids. Reusable water bottles may also be fitted with measuring instruments that can allow the user to track their improvement.
Here are some alternatives to a water bottle to help save the environment:
Glass water bottle
Before the advent of plastic glass bottles, glass bottles were the standard. It's coming back now and more and more people opting for alternatives, the glass bottles are getting more well-known. Glass isn't coated with a BPA layer, which makes it safe to use. Still, the most commonly acknowledged disadvantage is that it can break easily. People have added silicon sleeves on the bottom of the container in order to increase its stability in the event of hot or cold liquids. The silicon layer can protect it from breaking to a certain degree. You can find many kinds of glass bottles online at Ellementry. They come with either a wooden or ceramic lid.
Metal water bottle
Metal water bottles possess a sleek look that draws most people when it comes to reusable water bottles. There are a variety of options to choose from in a variety of sizes, colors, and designs. Choose the one that is most suitable for your preferences. These bottles are extremely durable and won't easily break.
Terracotta water bottle
A great option for anyone who isn't traveling a lot and still wants to drink water in the natural environment Terracotta bottles make a great option. The clay part plays a significant role in keeping the water cool in the summer and adds a refreshing earthy flavor to the water. The water bottle isn't suggested for people who frequently go to work or school. Terracotta is a fragile material and is susceptible to cracking or break. Such terracotta bottles can also be found online on thebottlehousebrewingcompany.
Copper water bottle
Copper even though it's an elemental mineral, is widely known for its health benefits. Copper bottles are commonly used in Ayurveda to store water. It is believed that this helps bring balance to the doshas as well as increase the quality of water. It could be put anywhere as a decorative element or as a health benefit.
BPA free water bottle that can be reused in a plastic bottle
If the objective is to reduce the use of plastic however, it is the best option since it's lightweight. This is the case where you want a reusable one that is free of BPA coatings which could leach into water.
Insulated Stainless steel water bottle
Insulated water bottles are made with two walls in order to keep the temperature of water or liquid for extended periods of time. These bottles are perfect for those who wish to take cold or hot liquids and not burn themselves.
As we have observed, each water bottle comes with its own advantages and it's crucial to select the right one after you have read about the advantages. Visit thebottlehousebrewingcompany today to check out the stylish bottles.

Reprise - Chapter 1 (exr)
An Enjoltaire / JBM+R friendship fic for @williamvapespeare, promised far too long ago for how long chapter 1 has taken me to write.
Rated T for now, higher rating in later chapters.
The cottage at the end of the lane seemed to sit outside the boundaries of normal life. Grantaire had spent more long, lazy days and warm, comfortable nights under starry skies in the garden of that cottage than he’d spent settled in any other place in the last few years and every moment he’d lived within the charming, private world his friends had built there had changed him in ways he couldn’t begin to explain. It made sense, he supposed, that it felt like home; Joly, Bossuet and Musichetta were the closest thing to family he had in left in France.
Four years ago, Grantaire walked away from Les Amis for his own sanity. He stayed in touched with everyone but Enjolras, the only person he couldn't bear to speak to, but with the passage of time friendships have grown thinner and time apart has grown longer. He's travelled, worked, and tried to find his place in the world.
He's always got a home at Joly, Bossuet and Musichetta's cottage in the French countryside, and heading there this time might just set Grantaire on the road to recovery he's always needed to walk.
READ ON AO3
Chapter 1 (of 10) (3,437 words)
The cottage at the end of the lane seemed to sit outside the boundaries of normal life. It was as though the long grass and wildflowers and hedgerows surrounding it kept time from moving within the old stone wall around it, the winding path down to the pastel door - too narrow and overgrown for anything larger than a bicycle - creating a threshold into the unfading warmth of the building’s embrace. Grantaire had spent more long, lazy days and warm, comfortable nights under starry skies in the garden of that cottage than he’d spent settled in any other place in the last few years and every moment he’d lived within the charming, private world his friends had built there had changed him in ways he couldn’t begin to explain. The night was muggy and silent save for the sound of his own footfall on the tarmac and the peaceful buzzing of summer insects drawn to the streetlights. Even the potholes were familiar as he navigated the quiet single lane roads of Auvers-Sur-Oise on the way to the closest place he had left to a permanent home. It made sense, he supposed, that it felt like home; Joly, Bossuet and Musichetta were the closest thing to family he had in left in France.
Years had passed since their small group had been whole but of all of Grantaire’s friends, the three of them were a constant he could always count on to welcome him back with open arms. Not to say that he didn’t miss every member of their old student society. From Courf’s good sense of humour to Combeferre’s deep and life-changing conversations, Jehan’s endless light, Bahorel - the best of drinking buddies - and Feuilly, who’d never once judged the way Grantaire used to be. Even Marius, who’s foolish love sickness that had once driven them all mad had by some miracle culminated in a beautiful wedding to an even more beautiful bride, the two of them had moving out of Paris years before anyone else.
And Enjolras, of course Enjolras.
After everything that had happened between them, after all the pain and the longing, after having to cut and run from the entire city for the sake of his own sanity, Grantaire still missed Enjolras. Even though he’d made himself believe over time that he’d made the right choice, the air had never been cleared. There was so much left unsaid that still stung to think about, weighed him down to carry around with him like a song unsung. He doubted he’d ever say it now.
It was already far past midnight, but Grantaire had a spare key nestled permanently into the coin pocket of his wallet and if the three of them were asleep when he arrived, they’d know he’d was there when they saw the guest room door closed in the morning. Joly had declared it Grantaire’s room over a year ago, a place to store some of the possessions he didn’t want to travel with and a place he could always hide away in when the world got too much to bear.
As it was tonight. As it had been for the last few months.
Grantaire had turned thirty three five weeks ago - he’d passed his birthday quietly, in nobody’s company but his own - and hadn’t seen his friends since two months before his thirty second birthday. Only now he was close did it really hit him what a stretch of time that was; how he’d watched the seasons change but not seen the relief on Joly’s face as winter ebbed away, or how the colour of the fallen leaves matched perfectly with Musichetta’s hair whilst she walked in the park, or heard Bossuet’s laughter as he stretched out like a cat in the late summer sun. Time was like that - every passing year that aged him brought more loneliness and misery. His chest physically ached with every step towards them, a longing for closeness to the people he cared most for that he’d never forgotten, but had tucked away in the back of his mind somewhere along the way.
The last year and a half had been a chaotic whirlwind of opportunities, inconveniences, successes and failures. Grantaire had set out across Europe chasing work, without any real idea of what he was doing: taking photographs and selling them to magazines and websites to make money with hopes of turning it somehow into a career, sleeping in bus stations and hostels when he couldn’t afford anything better. He’d mostly been alone at first. He’d made plenty of friends in passing, but friendships on the road were always fleeting. Ships passing in the night. He’d stayed a while for free in an artists colony, which were the happiest six weeks of all his travelling, surrounded by people that reminded him of his friends from back home. There his days were packed with laughter and philosophy and creativity, and the long nights spent drunk and high, and almost always in someone else’s company. But then he’d almost picked up a paintbrush again, and so he’d moved on quickly before he fell prey to the temptation. And then, of course, there’d been love. Or would-be love, he supposed. Eight whole months of trying to feel something that was never quite there with someone who was only nearly what he wanted. It was symptom of getting older, he supposed: a painful awareness of time that urged him to settled down, to do things the way he thought he was expected to, to ‘find’ himself. Find happiness.
Grantaire rebelled against it as violently as he tried to conform to it, and in that constant internal tug of war he’d found himself more uncertain than ever. The smallest of disagreements blew out of control until the relationship he’d hung all his hopes on had worn thin like butter over too much bread. Like every time something went wrong in his life, Grantaire did what he did best: he ran.
This time, at least, he’d run back the way he came.
Tarmac gave way to gravel underfoot, and gravel became dirt as Grantaire found the turn to the lane, the sign for Bird’s Nest Cottage nearly entirely hidden in the ferns growing along the path. He made a mental note to cut them back for his friends as soon as he found the time. They wouldn’t ask him to but he liked to pull his weight when they let him stay and stored his belongings for free. He was utterly exhausted from the journey. He’d been met with delays and cancellations on almost every public transport service west of Stuttgart, and an already epic day of travelling had become sixteen hours of dull, slow-moving hell all the way from Prague back to France. His stomach was turning with hunger. The ache in his shoulders under the weight of his rucksack, stuffed with everything he’d taken with him on his travels, grew with each step but before long he could make out the squat building: the sloping clay tiles of the roof, the green shutters with paint peeling in a few too many places, the brick work hidden behind a curtain of ivy. A dim light in the kitchen window guided him in like a ship welcomed back to harbour after years at sea.
Grantaire paused on the doorstep to breathe in the warm night time air one last time before he stepped inside. He could hear someone moving around in the kitchen and the muted clattering of crockery and pans was as comforting as a lullaby, knowing he was home.
He imagined it was Bossuet clearing up long after dinner - perhaps Joly and Musichetta had fallen asleep leant against him on the sofa and he hadn’t wanted to move them. Or perhaps Joly had simply been home extremely late from his job at the tiny town’s doctor’s surgery, often held up after hours updating records or doing home visits because he didn’t have the heart to turn any patient down. Musichetta cooked most of the time, not because her boys couldn’t, but because she loved to do it. She was a great cook to boot. Grantaire’s mouth watered a little at the thought of her cooking, and as he knocked on the door - quietly, so as not to disturb anyone already asleep - he found himself hoping there were leftovers in their fridge that he could dig in to.
No answer. He frowned, pausing to listen again. The kitchen was suddenly quieter, but no one was coming to the door. Probably because of the late hour. No one expected a knock on the door at nearly one a.m. But if someone was up, there was a chance that- yes, the door was unlocked. Grantaire pushed it open and revelled in the silence as it swung back. Someone had oiled the hinge after years of creaking.
There it was. With it came all the memories. The front door opened straight into the sitting room, a crowded asymmetrical space that managed to look cosy with its terracotta tiled floor and piled up rugs, mismatched bookshelves and vintage furniture, lit by a few small lamps scattered throughout the space. The room was punctuated by a wooden column supporting the upper floor of the cottage. Grantaire remembered dancing around that column with Bossuet on a spontaneous karaoke night, Musichetta laughing so loud in one of the armchairs that she almost drowned out the music. Every corner of the room was filled with similar memories - enjoying the sunshine by the patio doors, quietly opening up to Joly sat on the staircase in the far corner, moving all the furniture to make room for a giant dining table on a weekend almost all of their friends had managed to make it for Sunday lunch. Grantaire’s despondent heart began to fill again as he reminisced, a smile curling at the corners of his lips; the cottage was already working its magic, threading him back together piece by piece, so gently that it didn’t hurt at all.
“...Grantaire..?”
That wasn’t Bossuet.
Or Joly, or Musichetta.
All the warmth flooded out of Grantaire’s tired body at once as he turned towards the sound, towards the kitchen doorway, towards something he definitely was not ready to deal with.
Enjolras.
There he was in all his golden-haired glory, red shirt hanging off his broad shoulders, bright eyes wide in the low light as he looked Grantaire up and down. In one hand he was holding a box of cereal, the other hand buried inside it.
He was as beautiful as the first day Grantaire had met him.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Grantaire said, snappier than he probably should have been. The hair on the back of his neck prickled up. He was clutching one strap of his backpack, had been about to take it off, but with all his defenses suddenly sky high he found himself squeezing it until his knuckles turned white.
Enjolras looked a little taken aback, but recovered quickly. “I’m staying here,” he said. The cereal box rustled as he extracted his hand, empty.
That was a spanner in Grantaire’s plans. He drew in a sharp breath, mind racing for a solution. He couldn’t stay here with Enjolras. He couldn’t stay here with Enjolras.
“How...long for?”
“I don’t know,” Enjolras answered, with enough hesitance that Grantaire heard ‘indefinitely’ in the subtext. “At least until Bastille Day. Possibly longer.”
It’d been so long since they last saw each other, last spoke, that Grantaire couldn’t even begin to guess at why Enjolras would be staying with friends for the foreseeable future, especially this far outside of Paris. He’d always known Enjolras as a part of Paris, as if he’d grown naturally from the cracks between its paving slabs like the flowers. He belonged there and Grantaire couldn’t imagine him spending too long outside city limits, lest he collapse from the separation. Of the friends he and Enjolras shared, Grantaire would have pinned him as staying with Combeferre, or Courfeyrac, or Feuilly before Joly, Bossuet and Musichetta.
But they didn’t know each other anymore.
Grantaire shifted on his feet. He had no idea what else to say, or what to do. There was definitely nowhere else he could stay this late at night - the town only had one guest house and he couldn’t show up there at one in the morning - and he was exhausted, aching, starving. His legs would likely give out beneath him if he tried to go anywhere else.
“I suppose you’re staying too,” Enjolras said, gesturing to his bag. His words were stilted. It was only be expected, the way they’d left off before. “They hadn’t said.”
“They didn’t know I was coming,” Grantaire rebuked quickly. “I have my own key. I can come and go as I please.”’
“Oh. I see.” This was strange. Enjolras had to be feeling it to. Nearly four years with no contact, they were basically strangers, and yet Grantaire couldn’t escape the surge of feelings creeping up his throat.
Studying him, he found Enjolras’ hair was a little shorter than he remembered, his cascading curls barely brushing his shoulders. His own was a little longer though, he supposed. Besides that he couldn’t see any change in Enjolras’ face, no lines to give away the passage of time like Grantaire was sporting at the corners of his eyes. He looked younger than his years, as he always had done; no older than twenty-three, although after all this time he had to be skirting his thirtieth birthday. Of course he’d be blessed with eternal youth. If anyone was, it’d be Enjolras.
Before Grantaire could think of anything else to say, there was a creak on the staircase. They turned in sync to look over at the corner of the room and found Joly hovering a few steps up, resting on his cane, robe wrapped around himself and pinned in place with an arm folded over his chest. He was barely awake.
“Hello stranger,” Joly said, tired smile breaking out on his face as he realised Grantaire was standing there. He made his way carefully down the last two steps. Grantaire couldn’t help grinning back, finally shedding his heavy pack off his back carelessly, as Joly approached and pulled him in a tight hug.
God, this was what he needed. The dread of seeing Enjolras out of the blue seeped from his body as Joly’s arms enveloped him. He buried his face into his shoulder, wishing he could hide there forever.
“Missed you,” he mumbled into the fabric of Joly’s robe, returning the hug with equal vigour. “It’s been too long.”
“Far too long, my friend. We’ve missed you too. All of us. So, so much.”
Grantaire was distantly aware of Enjolras still stood beside them but he refused to care. This was what he’d come for. If his heart was still beating a little too fast, if he was a little dizzy at their closeness, he’d keep that close and let no one else know.
“Are you just passing through? Or staying a while?” Joly asked once Grantaire finally released him. “Chetta’s asleep but she’ll be made up to see you in the morning. Bossuet’s out until Friday but if you stay, he’ll be over the moon, I’m sure.”
He gave Grantaire a look, too. It was a look filled with silent questions: is everything okay? Do you need anything? Do you need to talk? Only Joly could see through him so easily, but Grantaire schooled his own expression and hoped his easy smile would keep his friend content for the time being.
“I don’t know. Seems you’ve got a full house already,” he shrugged, glancing over at Enjolras.
Enjolras was already staring right at him. Meeting his eyes caught Grantaire off guard and threatened to unnerve him all over again. They were so very blue, and striking against his porcelain complexion; Grantaire knew that already, but he’d shoved the knowledge somewhere deep down inside. They were also…vulnerable, almost. Or at least less guarded than Grantaire remembered.
“There are two beds in the guest room,” Enjolras suggested honestly. “I don’t mind-”
“Or Chetta’s office,” Joly said quickly. Not for the first time, Grantaire was extremely thankful Joly understood him so well. “You can take the pull out, it’s pretty comfortable. And private.”
Enjolras looked slightly put out to be cut off, but he didn’t say anything. Grantaire breathed a silent sigh of relief - the thought of sharing a room with Enjolras struck an unwarranted amount of fear into him.
“That’d be fine, thank you,” Grantaire said. He was already thinking of where else he could go once the morning rolled around - perhaps the guest house in the town, or he could suck it up and move somewhere else entirely. He didn’t have to stay with Joly and the others - not if Enjolras was already taking up their hospitality. He’d overload them and he’d hate himself if he became a burden. Not on the people who cared the most for him.
He climbed the stairs quietly after Joly, Enjolras remaining thankfully downstairs. Grantaire was sure he didn’t stop to take a breath until they were in Musichetta’s office and Joly had showed him how to fold out the spare bed.
“How are you doing really?” Joly asked, a gentle hand coming to rest on his shoulder. “I’m sorry about...I would have warned you, if I’d known you were coming.”
Grantaire leaned into the touch. “I’m alright.” I have to be. “I promise.” He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. “You know what I’m like, last minute decisions and all that. I’ll find somewhere else to stay tomorrow.”
Silent for a long moment, Joly just squeezed his shoulder harder.
“You don’t have to, you know. You’re always welcome here.”
“I don’t want to be a bother-”
“R.”
When he looked up, Joly was staring at him firmly. He trembled a little under the scrutiny - not pity, but real, genuine care and love that even Grantaire couldn’t deny was real. He couldn’t meet Joly’s eyes for long before he had to look away.
“Just that this was...seeing him is-” Fumbling over his words, Grantaire fell silent and rubbed his hands over his face.
How could he put into words how it felt to see the man he’d considered the love of his life after four long years purposefully as far away from him as he could be? After he’d fled from him before the infatuation killed him? How many nights had he spent crying on Joly’s shoulder over his unrequited feelings for Enjolras and his desperate loneliness and the resolute feeling of life not being worth living? And now - now Grantaire would have to explain that despite all that, everything he’d put his friends through and after no more than ten minutes of strained conversation, he still felt the same way he always did. His heart was fluttering. He was light-headed. He thought that he might cry, although the exhaustion may have played a part in that particular pitfall.
He desperately wanted to tell Joly he was sorry, but words failed him.
“I know,” Joly said, patting his shoulder before he let his arm drop back to his side. “Get some sleep, okay? We can talk it out tomorrow.”
Grantaire nodded and tried to swallow the lump in his throat with little success.
Biffing Joly goodnight and stripped down to his underwear and t-shirt, too tired to even dig out his toothbrush. The sofa bed was comfortable enough; he probably would have managed to sleep in a bus stop if he’d had to, he was that worn out. Yet laying there, staring up at the ceiling with a million thoughts turning inside his over-tired brain, Grantaire started to worry he wasn’t going to get to sleep at all.
Especially not when he heard Enjolras coming quietly upstairs and slipping quietly into the guest room. (My room, he thought. The one with the bed he’d come to think of as his own, and now Enjolras was sleeping in it. In the place where he slept.)
He’d get through this, just like everything else. Tomorrow was another day, he told himself, and he would handle it because he had to. He could handle anything where there was no other choice.
Or he’d just run away again. That decision could be made later.
Grantaire fell asleep around three a.m already knowing Enjolras would haunt his dreams, as he had done every night all those years ago, wondering if Enjolras ever dreamt about him too.

A little distance can go a long way on a bike in Europe. One moment I'm cycling out of Nice, the next I'm lunching in Monaco. By late afternoon, I've crossed into Italy. Three countries on two wheels in one day, and my journey has only just begun.
I'm cycling from one Riviera to another – France to Italy, Nice to Genoa – a week-long ride through sun, beaches and surprisingly rural and remote villages just the length of a few beach towels from the coast.
In Nice, the sun pours down on another Cote d'Azur day and the beach is a mosaic of umbrellas and bodies. Leaving this city of 350,000 people is surprisingly easy, with a coastal bike track wrapping around the bay. For a few minutes, I'm just another bike buzzing along the waterfront.
Monaco by lunchtime. Photo: Alamy
For a week, I'll never be far from this coastline, following roads and bike tracks, setting out along a coast where half of France seems to lay out in the sun in tiny bays nibbled into white cliffs. Soon Nice is behind me and plush villas hang from the coastal slopes like loaded wallets. Cliffs rear out of the sea, with stony bays and terracotta villages strung across their toes.
Ahead of me stretches 250 kilometres of cycling, but the burden is light. Each day my luggage is picked up from my hotel and delivered to my next stop. My own task is simple: pedal, eat and drink.
As is the nature of coastal rides, a pattern begins immediately – rolling down into seaside towns and climbing back out. I ride beside, through and under cliffs, and I'm forever stopping to peer down at the Mediterranean Sea, which is adorned with super yachts. There's not a bad view to be seen.
For the moment my journey is on roads that I share with vehicles, though on a summer weekend even the cars are bunched like pelotons.
I'm lured ahead this morning by the prospect of Monaco, that great grail of wealth that hides from view until I'm deep inside it, suddenly down at the edge of its port, a lone bicycle among sports cars and yachts so large they might qualify as islands.
I'm soon rolling east again, back into France, with the Vegas-sized resorts and hotels of the principality falling behind me. The road creeps up the slopes to Cap Martin before rolling to the point where France ends in a burst of beauty at Menton. With its long stony beach and backyard of craggy peaks, Menton is like a slimmed-down version of Nice, with fewer high rises and more beach umbrellas. At the end of its beach, beneath great cliff faces of rock, I roll into Italy. I'm less than 40 kilometres from Nice.

There's immediately a more earthy feel to the coast. In the sea, for the first time, there's not a single super yacht, agriculture stripes the slopes and cars seem more sprawled than parked on the road. And against expectation, it's Italy that proves the most bike-friendly of the two countries.
The next morning, approaching San Remo, I turn on to the 25-kilometre-long Riviera del Fiori bike path, beginning through a long tunnel with a gallery of photographic moments from the famed Milan-San Remo bike race hanging from the ceiling. It's the perfect welcome to one of the world's great cycling towns, which is home also to one of Italy's four casinos, pitting it as a rival to Monaco.
Out of San Remo, the bike path runs long and flat and soon it's almost empty of bikes. San Remo becomes just a smear along the bay behind me, and then as I slip through two more old rail tunnels, it's gone forever.
France ends in a burst of beauty at Menton. Photo: SHUTTERSTOCK
The wind propels me on, and I feel as though I could happily ride this path every day of my life. Other cyclists materialise in what seems to be the local team uniform of bare skin rather than Lycra, and a woman in her 80s cycles by, working the pedals as though she is herself coming into the finish of Milan-San Remo.
Ancient towns crown the hilltops just above me, and as the bike path ends I turn up on to the rise. Within minutes I'm far above the coast, climbing through dry slopes dotted with ancient, gnarled olive trees. Apple and pear trees lean over the road, their limbs heavy with fruit, and the road is so narrow that when the only car passes me, I have to pull off into the grass to let it through. It's as though I've left one Italy and entered another.
My climb ends in the hilltop village of Civezza, where almost nothing moves in the midday heat. A radio pours chatter through an open shuttered window and cats laze in the shadows. The place is almost a caricature of itself – the idyllic Italian village – but so lovely for it. I cool my face in a 160-year-old fountain and roll back down the hill to the coast and an endless line of beach umbrellas.
For the next three days this is the new pattern of my ride – gentle cruises through the seaside towns of the Italian Riviera, broken by climbs to timeless stone villages that sit like sentries above. Even older than the villages is a section of the route along the coast out of Alassio, at around the halfway point of my journey. Here, beside an 11th-century stone church and archway, the ride turns on to a part of the Via Julia Augusta, a Roman road built in about 12BC, under Emperor Augustus, linking Italy's Po valley to Spain.
It's a short date with history – just a few kilometres to Albenga, the so-called Town of 100 Towers – but the way is dotted with the tombs and crumbled buildings of a Roman necropolis.
The Romans knew their aesthetics and it's one of the most dramatically beautiful sections of the ride, poised above the craggy coast with turtle-shaped Gallinara Island just offshore. Quickly the old road narrows to a dirt trail through the forest before it bumps across a section of the Via Julia Augusta's original 2000-year-old stonework. I feel as if I should be riding a chariot, not a bicycle.
The following morning, out of Finale Ligure, I begin the ride's final climb, a four-kilometre, winding, gradual ascent to the Altopiano plateau. The Ligurian Sea below me is now transparent, and for the first time I'm a little jealous of the bodies swimming in it.
On the Altopiano, the forest canopy becomes my own beach umbrella, and the greenery that lines the road – olives, grapes, figs – consists of the very things I'm consuming each night.
With this last climb suddenly behind me, the ride returns to the coast, passing through Savona, Liguria's third-largest city, to Varazze, where an old railway line has been converted into the Lungomare Europa bike path. It will mark the finish of my ride – 10 kilometres of traffic-free cycling – before I hop on a train into Genoa.
The Lungomare Europa twists and turns with the shape of the coast, which is rocky, rugged and indented with stony beaches. Sunbakers sprawl on rocks, looking for all the world like seal colonies.
The Riviera sun is warm on my back, and a wind pushes me once again towards Genoa, which now rises in the distance like Oz. It's pedal perfect.

Start travelling Morocco, now I am telling the story.
DAY 1 - Marrakech
For the first week, I was living as a tourist. I started my travel with two friends, landing in Marrakech, we had the chance to visit the old city and the old market. We sleep there only two nights, and unfortunately, visited the city for only one full day, as our time was limited. At a first glaze, everything is messy, bunch of people around you trying to sell you everything they have in their little and curious shop. You must be sure about what you want to do, and buy, tourist catchers are upon every corner, waiting for you to come and bring you around the city, eventually asking for money immediately after. I didn’t like this approach, we are not walking wallet, sorry! I have no much money as a cheap traveller, I got no work and the only money I have, as many people, are my saving. Trying to explain this to locals is very difficult, as European people, we kind of stand up the crowd. Of course, language skills of local people is very limited, most of them know only Arabic language, only a few (who went to school) know English or Francois, or Spanish, or Italian. Anyway, as many of you (I hope), I am perfectly able to wander around by myself. I would like to visit Morocco with some local, some friends that can bring me around and show me all the little and beautiful spots, but at this time I didn’t have any local friends to rely on.
The extreme poorness of this area of Morocco that lives only by tourism and farming seems to bring the people to become a little crazy and annoying the tourist is the perfect business. I can understand that, but be prepared, eventually, be rude to the people if you don’t like them around, or do not want to buy anything from the shops. Eventually they do not care anymore about you and let you go free. You get used to that at a certain point! Walk away and do not give attention to the people, eg. Do not enter in a carpet shop if you don’t want to buy a carpet! Of course, we got scammed a few times, especially buying scarfs at 4 time the normal price, and some unusually expensive (but good) dates. As first day in morocco, we wouldn’t expect anything else of course! We didn’t know how to deal with all of this. Is normal. Anyway. Marrakech is an astonishing city, with its flat roof architecture, is a total mess of old and abandoned houses to new ones time by time. At a first look can seems a dirty city, if you watch the streets, and the people literally selling their stuff (vegetables and mostly garbage) in the ground, but everything is how it is, and you get used to this. Coffee are selled all over the streets and in coffeshops, where you can rest and spend 50 cent to get a tea or a good coffee, of course, with a lot of sugar! Everything is sugary there, especially tea. Locals says that if tea is sugary, the host wants you to stay more at its place, and if he serve you not-sugary tea, he wants you to leave. On the other hands, fruits like bananas, avocados and dates are first quality and very, very inexpensive. Also eating outside is cheap if compared with Europe, you can get a meal for 3-5 euros and if you eat at the dirty places, eg- street food in local small shops, you can eat with below 1 euro, of course be prepared to the eventuality that your food cannot be so clean! (I faced no problem at all) So select your street food seeing around what it seems to you the best place to eat. If you try to deal with the people, that of course want you to buy at European prices, you can manage, depending on your dealing skills, to get the objects you want a normal prices for the locals. Examples? A tajine medium size plate, that is the traditional way to cook food in Morocco, or, a terracotta round plate with a special conical lid on top, can cost you around 4-5 euros only. Of course, everything handmade in the family shop of the people living in the city. Yes, apparently, craftsmanship still the main source of income of many families, that runs small business in cities or little towns, making pottery, dressing, textile art-works and much more. Of course, some of them are tourist-based, so, basically, they produce garbage, and only some of them are real artisan making piece of art. It is up to you to wander around and look for the perfect present to bring home to your family, or the cheap and very good traditional Morocco clothing that you can buy and wear to mix with them.
Marrakech was the old destination of ancient Berber convoys, coming from the inner region of Africa, like Timbuktu, in Mali, in a slow and difficult travel across the desert. This because Marrakech was the bridge to the Europe for people living in mid-Africa, and for centuries Berber mans was crossing the endless desert to reach the city, in a 60 days travel, stopping time by time in appositely builded cities in the Atlas, and before, in the Morocco desert, following a straight route to the west coast.
So, after all the day spent in the old Medina, visiting small markets and eating an astonishing delicious meat tajine with a delicious sweet tomato jam, we finally head back at night to our cosy backpacker hostel, to rest and drink tea in the common area, chatting with the owner and other guests. There, every hostel is super cheap (even less than 5 euro at night, but of course do not expect luxury! You can spend 10-20 euros for a stay in beautiful hotels and small houses if you want) and every one has a terrace on top where you can see the city around you.
What I really noticed is the extreme religiousness of the place, every mosque around has a prayer that calls the people 5 times a day, and many of them follow strict guidelines given by religion, especially in the day to day behaviour and relation to the people around. They are way more religious than us, but I will not go deeper in religion reflections at this time. They are happy like this, I respect them, but be careful when you see mans with a black spot on the top of their head, often, they are fanatics and their behaviour if they run a shop, is very aggressive and orientated to sell the most to praise the god.
In the end Marrakech was beautiful, worth to visit, but way to much tourism there! I suggest you to stay max 3 days there, so you can visit everything there is around, and go immediate after to other nearest places.

Guide to the Amalfi Coast
WHERE TO STAY
Where you stay on the coast really depends on what kind of trip you're looking for. The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is during the summer months between April and September, but it is also the most crowded time to visit. However, if you go too early or too late in the season, many restaurants and lodging options may be closed. If you want a romantic and relaxing trip, I would stay on the Amalfi Coast for a few days to enjoy the nice weather and breathtaking views. It's pretty easy to access the island of Capri and the ruins of Pompeii from this town. If you're pressed for time and do not have the luxury of a longer vacation at the moment, a night or two in Positano will suffice to see the sights and take a day trip to Capri. Obviously, the beauty of this area makes it extremely difficult to leave, but I was able to do Naples, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast all in the span of a week. The Amalfi Coast is composed of Sorrento, Sant'Agata, Nerano, Positano, Praiano, Conca dei Marini, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Maiori, Minori, Cetara, Erchie, Vietri Sul Mare, and Salerno.
POSITANO
While all of these places have their charms, Positano is the best known for the pastel-colored houses that spill down its cliffs into the sea. It has some of the most beautiful views and a centralized nightlife around seaside bars, restaurants, and clubs. Because of this, it's also one of the few towns on the coast that are known for its upscale shopping. However, hotels in Positano are the priciest option.
Il San Pietro Di Positano
Hotel San Pietro is one of the most breathtaking hotels you'll encounter in your lifetime. Each room comes with its own private terrace and jacuzzi connected by stairways that hang cliffside. There is also a private beach, bar, and tennis court on site for your convenience.
SORRENTO
Sorrento is the official starting point of the Amalfi Coast and the easiest town to reach. If you want to take day trips to Naples and Pompeii, stay here because being further along the coast can make it difficult to travel back and forth (the roads are extremely narrow and can be jammed with traffic during the busy season).
Villa Parisi
If you're doing Airbnb, this is a great option for a group of friends. Villa Parisi is on a hill overlooking the Sorrento bay with century-old trees surrounded by olive and lemon groves. There are three wide rooms on the first floor with windows that open to magnificent views of the ocean each morning.
Amalfi
Amalfi is also a great option if you want to see the luxury and beauty of Positano without the price. It's easy to travel to other towns along the coast and to take a day trip to Capri from here.
Villa Lara
This hotel was built in the late 1800s and is surrounded by the Duomo and the sea. They have the most breathtaking views of the sea, through an elevator built entirely into the rock. You can also climb up the panoramic flight of stairs to one of the most beautiful terraces in Amalfi.
Salerno
Salerno is at the other end of the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento and a huge transportation hub. If you're traveling from Rome by train, it's easy to navigate to Salerno and start from there. It has a charming, gritty vibrant Centro Storico (historic center) and has a beautiful tree-lined seafront promenade.
However, regardless of which option you choose on the coast, you're able to experience the gorgeous sunsets that bless the Amalfi Coast each night.
Terrazza Paradiso B&B
This Airbnb is in a villa with a terracotta terrace and gardens that offer a stunning view of the Gulf of Salerno. Surrounded by lush Mediterranean gardens, it's a great place to enjoy wine while relaxing with your friends or family.
WHAT TO EAT
L'Olivo - Capri
L'Olivo has received two very well deserved Michelin stars. The restaurant has a spacious dining area lit by warm colors overlooking the Bay of Naples. Its gourmet cuisine is the result of different combinations of flavors where the chef's attention to detail is extremely evident with every bite.
Le Sponda - Amalfi
This restaurant sits among the rocks of the Amalfi Coast with a dining room that has over 400 candles, walls covered in climbing roses, and a huge window opening on the horizon. The menu is extremely diverse, boasting great options that can accommodate even the most finicky of eaters.
La Tagliata - Montepertuso
At La Tagliata, there is no menu. You have to trust in the chef and let me tell you, I have not ever been disappointed by Dora's pasta. The food is a mix of homemade ricotta, gnocchi, grilled meat, and roasted vegetables followed by a mouth-watering array of desserts.
Maria Grazia - Nerano
This little ramshackle beach-side restaurant is one of the best lunches you'll have in your life. The village of Nerano is only a short drive away from Sorrento and the home of the amazing Maria Grazia courgette pasta. You may find similar dishes along the coast, but they were the first to create and perfect this lunch special. Come here hungry before you begin your day of exploring.
Da Adolfo - Positano
This place serves the best local fish in the most stunning location right on the beach. It's incredibly low-key and extremely popular. To reach it, you have to take a little boat from the port of Positano. They pick people up from the port in a boat with the flag of a red fish. Make sure to book at least two weeks in advance; trust me, it's completely worth it.
Da Emilia - Sorrento
Da Emilia has been open for over 50 years and remains a great option for fresh fish at a low-cost. The family-run business serves locally caught seafood prepared with a simple dash of olive oil and lemon. The blue-and-white checked tablecloths on wooden tables overlook the fishing boats in the port, making it a relaxing place to unwind before your afternoon nap.
WHERE TO PARTY
Africana - Praiano
Located inside of a natural cave almost a sea level, Africana is the Amalfi Coast's most famous night club. The magical atmosphere is a great place to go if you're looking for somewhere to unwind and dance after the sun goes down.
Anema e Core - Capri
This place was my favorite bar to dance in while traveling in Capri. It's a piano bar where the band plays classic Neapolitan songs with full audience participation. It's full of Italians, foreigners, and celebrities alike because it's got such a lively atmosphere every night.
Music on the Rocks - Positano
Positano has the most atmosphere after the sun goes down. It's great for people watching and is a fun club to meet young travelers from around the world.
Piazza Bellini - Naples
If you're looking for Neapolitan youth culture by night, you need to head to Piazza Bellini. Bars line the square and you'll find young tastemakers spilling out and filling up the sidewalk. It's a great communal atmosphere, where everyone comes together and mingles, meaning you'll find it almost impossible not to make new friends.
WHAT TO SEE
CAPRI
Capri is a beautiful day trip to take from any of the towns along the coast. Anacapri is home to one of the most amazing lido (public swimming pool) and has a chairlift to Monte Solaro, which provides you with breathtaking views of the island. You must also stop by La Fontelina, one of the most famous lidos in the world, which perches on a picturesque promenade along via Tragara. The Blue Grotto was one of my favorite sights from Capri. I recommend swimming in during the late afternoon when the tourist boats have left. The cave is such an amazing shade of blue and truly lives up to its name.
Naples
Naples has so many wonderful restaurants and breathtaking views of Mt. Vesuvius. They invented pizza and you'll find the best Margherita pizza with mozzerella in your life. You must stop by L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele, which you might recognize from its feature in "Eat, Pray, Love." It's the best pizza you'll ever have, and only for 6 euros. If you have time, I would stop by MADRE, the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina. With three floors of installations, you'll find site-specific artwork from Daniel Buren, Jeff Koons, and Anish Kapoor amongst many others.
Pompeii
The archaeological site of Pompeii is worth a visit. It's basically your AP US History class in real life, and both a terrifying and impressive reminder that humans have always been at the mercy of Mother Nature. Pompeii is easily accessible by train and doable as a day trip from Naples or the Amalfi Coast.
WHERE TO SHOP
Antichi sapori d'amalfi
If you're looking for limoncello, this is the place to go. They're the original family that started the Amalfi Coast liqueur business, dating back to 1989. Still a family-run bsuiness today, their lemoncello is produced with the "sfusato amalfitano" lemo grown in their gardens in the same handcrafted production process passed down from generation to generation.
Ceramica Artistica Solimene - Vietri sul Mare
Vietri has the best ceramic workshops that dates back to Roman times. The extrodinary faux-naif crockery is sold at resonable prices and a great present to bring home. There are hubs of local artists in town that craft traditional citrus-inspired ceramics.
Piazza Tasso - Sorrento
The streets surronding Piazza Tasso in sorrento has lively after-dusk shoopping if you're looking for designer Italian clothign or jewelry.
RULES FOR SUCCESS
PICKPOCKETS
Be extremely wary of pickpockets; I cannot stress this enough. Upon arriving in Naples with my camera around my neck, I was warned by an elderly man on the street to keep my hands around it at all times. Thieves will zoom by the intersection while you're waiting to cross the street and steal your camera off your neck. Keep your wallet and passport safe.
WIFI
The wifi service along the Amalfi Coast isn't as great as other parts of Italy. We were able to make to send text messages and update social media, but a lot of lodging options have not updated their coverage to accomodate business travel. I would make sure to ask your hotel or Airbnb prior to booking if this is a concern to you. However, you should take this opportunity to unplug and enjoy your time! The Amalfi Coast offers the most idyllic beauty and Italian luxury that you can find. With unparalleled views of the sea and surrounding towns, you have plenty of time to explore and relax with friends and family and catch up on work emails upon your return.
