Oh my goodness, Lenni and Margot, how many ways do I love thee? The answer is A LOT. I picked this book as a February read for @emmasbookishcorner challenge, in the category “recommended by a book seller,” and it was also a #wasitworththebump challenge book.⁣ ⁣ This book gave me all the feelings. It’s a heartbreaking and spellbinding tale of Lenni, seventeen years old and in hospital with a terminal illness. Her natural curiosity and zest for life brings her into the path of eighty three year old Margot. The two form a fast friendship and decide to celebrate the hundred years (adding their ages together) they have been alive by painting pictures and telling stories of monumental parts of their individual lives. ⁣ ⁣ We know from the very beginning that the outlook isn’t rosy for Lenni but this extraordinary story makes you forget all about that and admire her determination and tenacity for living life to the full in the final moments of her own life. We get to know both women intimately through what they choose to paint/tell each other and it’s almost like being a fly on the wall as they open up to each other and as they also find comfort and strength in their special bond. ⁣ ⁣ Lenni was such an unforgettable character and I’m still thinking about her and Margot weeks after finishing the book. It’s terribly sad - that’s a given, but strangely enough it’s incredibly life-affirming too and made me want to hold my loved ones just that little bit closer. Thank you so much to Emma for introducing me to this book and to the author for creating such beauty amidst the sorrow. Was it worth the bump?
