this sounds insane bc i dont know how to articulate what i mean exactly but like. the way svu eps are doing olivia character work on two levels, one being knowing who she is in-svuniverse, and the second being knowing what Olivia Benson means like metanarratively?, or has come to mean as an icon to *us*.
#like. it's the long lingering shot of her hugging maddie and saying 'i got you' it's the chin touch to shana it's the camera on her face#during the press conference. it's working on two levels all the time and it's not just to move along story. some of it is for *us* ykwim?#like for me 'saint olivia' has two meanings. pejorative and honorific. and this go around theyre like. directly feeding the honorific.#she's not only A Character- though she is- she's a concept and a vehicle and a wish fulfilment and a kind of fairy tale we want to be told.#and partially this is what i mean when i say that you can tell that the show *loves* olivia even if it is not kind to her because#on film time is real estate and on film that makes attention a kind of currency and the paying of that attention a kind of devotion#and given the strictures of what svu the show is and what *kind* of show it is that lack of kindness- the Putting Her Through Things#is how it shows its love most clearly because it is paying her attention. it is giving her a showcase.#sports utility vehicle#terminal brainrot
