Been replaying TERA online via the private server TERA Starscape and it’s fun seeing how I write character moments now vs how I wrote them as a teen when I first played this game. Here’s my priestess Esserae, she’s crustier than she was when I was younger. She probably shouldn’t be in charge of kids lmao
Context: the popori kid (the little furry Guy) just found out his dad was killed by vampires and their reanimated boars. Esserae is trying to lighten the mood. It’s not working.

i really miss TERA. i know it's not completely gone and still exists on console, but i've never really been one who enjoys mmos on consoles. the game shut down what feels like forever ago, but i guess i'm just now thinking about how i miss it. i played it a lot with friends from school after classes and late into the hours of the night. i remember one of my friends and i grinding like crazy to level 40 so we could get reapers together. playing that game has a lot of good memories, some that helped me through some really rough times and i suppose i'm just missing that. i'm sure there's private servers out there somewhere so i might go looking to see. i'll def miss all my old (mainly elin lol) characters. RIP girls

So what happened with ToS if you don't mind me asking? I played it for 30 hours apparently but I don't have a single memory of the experience.
Tree of Savior was meant to be a successor to Ragnarok Online, pulling from Lithuanian folklore (and specifically Romuva) for its setting. everything was set for it to be the second coming of what's still considered by many to be one of the best mmos of the 2000s, but as time passed, repeated bad decisions led to this opportunity being squandered
it's kind of like what happened with Elyon trying to replace TERA, except with a more culturally important game -- and, to be fair, with a much higher quality end result. there's a reason ToS is still around and Elyon isn't

do you like the concept of mmos but you don't like their combat? are guild wars 2, tera, and even black desert online not action gamey enough for you? do you like dmc, bayonetta, and/or kingdom hearts? if you answered yes to any of these questions, then play pso2. it is a free to play mmo with really good combat. like, character action level combat. it comes with both new genesis and classic. classic is a completed mmo and has higher maximum combat speed (luster my beloved) but lower minimum combat speed. it a hub based mmo. new genesis has new graphics and is on a newer engine, is open world, has better balancing between classes, but has much less content and you still kind of have to do your own stuff in it (soloing raid or world bosses, literally just straight up halo forge for player housing, exploring, that kind of thing), but it is getting more combat.
(note for classic, do not touch your mag or your skill tree until you know what you want, go to the phantasy star fleet discord for class guides that will tell you what to do. these need real money to fix if you fuck up. for ngs, you can not fuck up mags and you can reset your skill tree for free, so don't worry there)

Kasta for the OC Bingo! ❤️
No bingos here, but I am excited to talk about me OCs.
And let me tell you, Kasta has a long history, they lived long enough to see DeviantArt at its peak before its fall into utter misery (but they're not the oldest, that title goes to my Clone Wars OC I made when I was 10 or 11, who was supposed to be a secret relative of Obi-Wan Kenobi).
They went through many identities and...well, Phoenix moments (totally not a reference to my Pluto 1st House placement in my Astrology birth chart), before I eventually reshaped them into a serious Soul Calibur OC.
But to make a long heckin' story short, I often mention that they were my internet persona for the longest time.
What I did not mention (or maybe I did and I just forgot) is that I originally created them in TERA Online, a Korean MMO my sister got me to play when we were teenagers. Their name is originally a play-on-word of the Castanic, a playable horned race from the game. Yes, it's also where their horns come from, but the reason why they're moon-shaped is because the horns from this game are hard to draw and I have a habit of simplifying designs in my art (kind of the reason why I was able to get away with drawing Grøh and Azwel multiple times with my wrist intact, but I digress).
I've recently learned that their name (Kasta or Nik) could mean many things that I didn't know I accurately portrayed until I looked it up.
Kasta (or Casta) means "pure/modest one" in many cultures and sometimes refers to one with a shy and sensitive nature, but is also quick-minded and full of wisdom.
Nik is short for Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, which is also where the name Nicholas comes from and has associations with the greater public, hence "the triumph of the people." On the other hand, Nik is also short for nick, which is British slang for "to trick, cheat, or steal," which is funny considering there are instances in Libra of Soul where The Conduit steals something or goes full on tomb raiding.
It's also the fact that its my username on my main blog and has been my username for a long time, and how people in-universe also refer to Kasta as Nik comes from the fact that an old friend on Discord often referred to me as Nik and it sounded cool.
As I suggested in my fanfic adaptation, they don't care which name you refer to them as, just as long as you don't make it weird.
As you can guess, yes I admit, Kasta's a hard to write character to write. Shocking *lightning cracks in the background.* That ties in with the fact that I put a lot of myself in them (most of my crazy childhood that I'm able to share without going into TMI territory, the even crazier dreams I have when I fall asleep, the fact that Kasta also falls under the non-binary umbrella, etc) and that they're the one character that's been with me through thick and thin.
Sometimes, I get too excited about a character I'm creating that I put in a lot of details about them all at once that it either becomes too contradictory, they take too much away from the main cast or other OCs, or they get accused of being a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu (and as much as I act like Mary-Sue/Gary-Stus don't really exist because different people interpret characters differently or beauty lies in the eye of the beholder or something like that, the vindictiveness and bloodshed I've witnessed on DeviantArt did exist, and it still somewhat terrifies me to this day to even cross that kind of threshold).
So yeah, not only is it a balancing act for me to write Kasta, it's also a major responsibility for me to uphold considering they're the main character in my fic and that they are also my canon Conduit in the Libra of Soul game mode (among getting the characterization of everybody else in the story right).
But just as much as they are the absolute worst (endearingly), I still love writing them.
Also, let's not forget the fact that Kasta, as a Soul Calibur OC, went through SO. MANY. DESIGN. CHANGES!
When it comes to fanart, I don't care if you're an experienced artist or just starting out, as long as it's not made through an AI generator, I keep the fanart made for my OCs to cherish them for the rest of my days.

My introduction to FFXIV
Hey, after posting the thing about the stress test server a few weeks ago, I got an idea to try and go down the memory lane, trying to recall everything that had happened during the time I've spent playing Final Fantasy XIV. I hope that someone would find my story and experiences interesting. After all, I found out that I enjoyed seeing other people's reactions to the game itself as well.
But in order to tell my story, I have to start somewhere. And I can't find a better way to do so than to tell you how I learnt of the game in the first place.
Not sure when exactly did it start, but I remember my friend mentioning that he was playing FFXIV during Summer this year, I think. I wasn't too interested, after all I had prior experience with MMORPGs like Aion, Tera, Black Desert, ArchAge and even that Digimon Masters Online or whatever was it called, and I didn't go further than level 30 in any of them (which meant I was playing for less than a month or a month and a half at max for Aion (the 2010 version prior to becoming the cash shop simulator with no story) and Digimon Masters). Why was I trying so many MMOs out in the first place? Well, my mom is actually into MMOs herself so I was visiting the titles she was playing as well (minus Digimon Masters) to help her and just find a title I would like, but it never clicked so I thought that maybe I wasn't into online gaming in the first place.
So when I heard that my friend was playing an MMORPG that was also a part of a franchise I didn't know much about, I kinda wanted to join... but I hesitated, knowing that it would probably end the same way as it did for five other titles I've listed above.
Fast-forward to the beginning of September 2023, September 2nd to be presice, when I saw some hentai-loving douche from a Russian Megaman Discord server saying how much the old gaming and MMOs sucked in comparison to perverted gachas he was playing with and how the critically-acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV was actually trash. Needless to say, the guy was banned for posting hentai there. But either way, what he said about FFXIV was actually a good advertisement for the game so I remembered what my friend was saying and decided to reach out to him, saying I am willing to give it a shot. I did mention that I might not stay for too long here due to my track record with MMORPGs, but he said it was fine and that I can leave if it doesn't light up the spark in me in a month. He then made a group DM with a friend of his who actually was a person I saw on a different server a few years ago so that was neat.
I made a SquareEnix account that same evening, downloaded the game and then logged into the Free Trial for the first time, getting hit with this game's version of Prelude (even though I wasn't a fan or FF series, I knew the tune) and feeling a sense of tranquility, staying on the screen for a few minutes and continuing to listen to it while fiddling with settings.
I watched the opening cinematic (it was great but I was wondering if the game even had Japanese voice acting because I like playing games and hearing their original language, be it English, Japanese or something else, just a personal preference) and got to the character creator. I was looking at the races, finding a liking to exactly the three of them -- cat-eared people with furry tails known as Miqo'te, tall and slender horned people named Au Ra and short child-like folk with long ears by the name of Lalafell.
Also I was struggling a lot with trying to read most of the race's names at first. It took me at least a few weeks to memorize them even.
At first, I wanted to make Axl as a cat boy here, thinking that I probably won't stick for long anyway (and I did make him in the game later, I still have his preset saved), but I decided to actually choose the race none of my friends picked up (one was a Miqo'te, other was an Au Ra), so I went for a lalafell and made my boy Pi from ROCKMAN ZERO - Chapter: AXL here to the best of my ability. One of the two friends was certainly really happy I chose a potato according to her messages when I had announced it :D
After getting freaked out by the game asking what my deity was (picked Oschon because Pi has a thing for exploring and learning new stuff about the world), I decided to pick the Healer class, before getting told not to do that because it would make early combat really annoying, and then my friend told me I can go for Arcanist since it would become a Healer class at level 30. Needless to say, I went for the book, then chose the Atomos server because my friends were there (ping wasn't bad here at all, even though everything tends to freeze rarely due to my internet provider screwing me over) and thus had set my eyes towards the seaside jewel of Eorzea -- Limsa Lominsa...
I didn't know there was a different opening for each of the city-states at that time so I had some flashbacks to ArchAge when my character, Pi Peataan (I REALLY didn't think much while giving the character a name), but then we had actually arrived to the city and... I realized I underestimated my PC with the potato graphics settings I had supposedly set for it. Those bushes took me out of it for a moment.
So, I arrived to Limsa, fixed the graphics, met Baderon Tenfingers (still giggling at that name), took notes that pirate speak is indeed quite hard for me to read quickly, then went to the main plaza with giant aetherite where I was met by my friends, the self-proclaimed 'emo catboy' Miqo'te Summoner/Scholar and an immensely tall black-scaled Auri Dark Knight. They greeted me, which made me feel all shy because before that I've only seen these people as 2D avatars and text messages, and now they could ran around me and kinda interact with me... ahem. One of them added me to the friends list (other couldn't, he was still in Free Trial), and then went their own ways while I had one hour left before the bed to explore the city.
I didn't know yet that you don't need to do yellow quests so i just picked up all the quests that were available in Limsa before proceeding with the main quest. I was getting lost in this giant city A LOT, which was the result of me having what I call "topographical cretinism", but I was... enjoying it. I ended the day without setting a foot outside the starting area, but I was looking forward towards tomorrow to explore some more, drifting to sleep while the main menu theme kept ringing in my head, accompanying me into my dreams...
Hope you enjoyed this entry. I will try to continue this series. I had a lot of fun remembering the details of the first day of FFXIV for me and what was I feeling during it all. Playing through it again with my friends that cannot play FFXIV or don't want to sink so much time into an MMO, and looking through the backlog of messages and screenshots in Discord I left while going through all of that certainly helped to assemble these memories back in a proper order.
