HE CAN’T HELP LAUGHING AT HER USE OF HIS FULL NAME. “WHAT?” HIS TONE IS ALL INNOCENCE. HER next statement makes him scoff softly. Art doesn’t like blue. He doesn’t know why anyone would. He’s spent too long associating the color with Patrick to appreciate it anymore. “No they aren’t,” he murmurs quietly. He shakes himself from thoughts quickly, turning back to her with a smile on his face. “You mean to tell me you don’t have clothes for every season?” He’s teasing again. He’s fairly certain she doesn’t.

His smile turns sly at her words. “Keep them here. I’ll set a drawer aside for you. You can pick the ones you like best and I’ll keep them safe.” He shrugs out of his shirt and folds it neatly, setting it aside. “Then it’s yours.” He’ll have to tell Henry to set a drawer aside and pay him to keep silent about it, but that won’t be anything knew. He’s been paying his staff to keep their silence for years now. “Which one next?”

We went to the back so they could have all the courts up front for the little kids. Once I started hitting I saw the little kids peeking through to watch and then later the mom brought the little girl over by herself and watched. It was truly a girl power moment and humbling. I look up to and admire certain players but at that moment For this one little girl I could see in her eyes I was that for her. the girls were practically bouncing off the walls before going to their grandparents' house. ( the girls being more lily, who was thrilled and canary who didn't quite understand the concept but happy nevertheless. mavis, well, johanna hopes she'll sleep through the night and not realize her mother is away from her. ) the donaldson's offer was generous, giving them a night to themselves for the first time since mavis was born---since canary was born. somehow, art convinced her to agree to the offer. they would be too busy that night to feel guilty anyway . . . since they would be going to a show together.

they just hadn't anticipated the theater canceling as soon as they got home from dropping the girls off. if they had sent that email even five minutes before, they could have gotten the girls and spent the night together. with no distraction in front of her, johanna's hands tug at her hair. what if they get hurt? what if mavis does wake up before she's supposed to and is upset because isn't there? what if lily doesn't go to sleep? what if canary---?

art's suggestion comes at the perfect moment. slowly, she nods. if they're home, they can easily drive over if there are any issues. the girls are fine. ❝ i would like that. ❞ she smiles. ❝ like, um, what movies? it's a little late for christmas movies now. ❞

she wishes it could always be like this. a steady steam of kisses, flowing no matter where they were and no matter what company they were in. blankets, velvet or silky to the touch, casually dripping over their bodies as they lay back in bed. her chest is still heaving as she smiles so wide her eyes close. they could spend every morning like this and every night like they had a few minutes ago. she brushes her hair over her shoulder, making the skin there bare for him to press his lips upon. her other hand gently lays on his forearm. don't stop, she wants to tell him, knowing that they may very well end up as intertwined as before.

❝ i'm happy, ❞ johanna whispers, barely loud enough for him to even hear. she hadn't associated any happiness with such intimacy until art came back into her life and she can't help her satisfaction. the judge has no idea she goes behind his back to fall into her childhood sweetheart's bed. it isn't only spite. there's nothing wrong with wanting a little control in that aspect of her life, is there? there isn't anything wrong with feeling at ease with art and guiding his hands across her skin for him to kiss every inch.

she never quite expected this. a house. a husband. a step-daughter that she always drops the step from when introducing her. never mind a baby to go along with the happy life only stories portrayed. telling art that she didn't think she was capable of even having children feels like only yesterday. the capital damaged her body too horribly and she'd never bled normally. lily was living proof that art could, but she shrugged off the possibility of their own children even after things started to become normal for her. johanna had been damaged too badly.

their little boy only further proved that point.

between the guilt hanging heavy between her ribcage and the times she climbed into bed next to art just to sob into the pillow, she'd practically decided for herself that it would never happen. whether she was disappointed at this self-diagnosis or not, johanna wouldn't allow herself to tell. it was too painful focusing on their baby who only a few weeks prior, she swore she felt moving.

❝ art, she's barely two months old. let's not curse upon our daughter any of my features. at the rate you're going, she'll be barely five feet tall and a freckle on her eyelid. ❞ their baby is beautiful. canary violet will grow up in the peaceful world they help to shape, beautiful and if she's lucky enough to inherit those genes from art, tall. every day art has something new to point out about the baby --- not that johanna is any better. "is she supposed to be smiling when we talk to her?" "those are donaldson hands" "she made a sound! other than crying!" as she holds her now, she spots art in canary's chin.

lips press against the little hairs on her daughter's head. ❝ i see more of you in her than i do of me. she's more of a donaldson than a barker. ❞ barker lineage hasn't ever been wanted for anyway. ❝ if she does end up having green eyes . . . i'll . . . we'll i don't know what i'll do but it'll be something drastic. it doesn't matter anyway when she's going to have blue eyes just like her dad. ❞
