This is how I imagine the conversation Teferi had with Thalia to recruit her to fight the Phyrexians went.
Teferi: Oh brave and noble Thalia; The multiverse needs your aid against the Phyrexians!
Thalia: Sure but who are they?
Teferi: Well they're kind of like zombies...
Thalia: Zombies? Count me in, I know all about fighting zombies!
Teferi: ....mixed with robots.
Thalia: ....
Teferi: 😐

LRR OF THE SPARK
Okay, so in a recent live TCC, LRR was asked what planeswalkers they associate with “everyone in LoadingReadyRun”, and they gave some great answers, so I wanted to compile them as well as add my own opinions, so without further ado....
(also note that race/gender don’t factor here) Graham (Garruk)
Graham has cosplayed as Garruk for videos before, and you can totally see it. They also threw around the idea of Angrath, which I will admit I like better, but I also know that, for better or for worse, due to recent developments, Graham has cemented himself into the mono green man of the wild. (Plus, I wanted to use the stained glass art versions of all the walkers, and then I realized Graham was Garruk rip #whereareyougarruk) Paul (Karn)
You could argue that Paul is some sort of blue mage because of his endless experimentation in Friday Nights, but while Karn may not approve of some of Paul’s designs, he would appreciate the effort. Also, I mean, Paul’s card in Friday Nights is colorless for a reason, right? James (Angrath)
Alright, so a bunch of names were thrown around for James (Nicol Bolas, Gideon, Ajani [because he’s so supportive {sarcasm}]), and I personally didn’t think any of them fit. I then remembered a conversation I heard on stream (can’t remember exactly when, otherwise I’d link it), but someone referred to James as “Kind of a dick, but still has a heart of gold”, and that made me think of Angrath’s story from Ixalan, and I realized he was the perfect fit. Also, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard someone in chat say that James would make a great dad, I wouldn’t be yet another broke millennial, hahah. Ha.
Kathleen (Sorin)
This is one where you may have a different opinion than the LRR friends. Whether or not you consider it low-hanging fruit, you may have thought of Liliana first. While I do admit there is some merit to Kathleen being our goth queen, wielding her horde of Brave New Faves listeners against the forces of evil, a helpful, totally extra edgelord is not far off either.
Alex (Saheeli)
Alex was the first of a couple people whom I almost gave Tibalt. Early Friday Nights had him pinned as some sort of Rakdos Madman obsessed with explosives, sort of like if a goblin was a person. But, frankly, I don’t think the Demon Prince fits Alex very well. Alex is super creative, which you know if you’ve seen his art or his comics. He’s also been referred to as a “meme nexus”, and has a lot of information stored in his brain (which paved the way for the discussion of “Alex-isms”). His ability to create and appreciation of the world around him s very reminiscent to me at least of Saheeli. Plus, Alex doesn’t give a shit about your gender norms anyway. Fuck ‘em.
Cameron (Tamiyo)
Books? Notes? Yep, that’s Cam. Also, without a doubt, some of the deepest cuts and references you will ever hear on LoadingReadyRun have been from Cameron. He is the longest running co-host of a show where they analyze video games as art. Come on, the similarities keep coming. Also, Cam would totally be down to say “fuck your gender norms”. He is beauty, he is grace, and yet he will trip and fall and somehow find a way to land directly on his funny bone.
Ian (Daretti)
As discussed in the video, Ian is absolutely the tinkering goblin madman that turns into an evil genius in the sequel. Like, the show is LITERALLY called TINKER Tailor Solder Fry. Not to mention Daretti’s other quality: D E C A D E N C E. Some goblins will settle for any trash. Daretti only settles for the highest quality of trash. I feel like this statement highly resonates with Ian. Plus, there’s probably some “waifu is trash” joke that I’m missing since I don’t watch anime, but regardless: perfect fit.
Cori (Huatli)
They almost said Vivien, but then Cam pointed out (and I totally agree) that Cori would have red or blue in her color identity. So, here is Cori! She’s super helpful and friendly and wholesome, and she also reins Ian in when he goes a little too off the rails. That being said, Cori has been known to go off the rails a little herself, and is super creative, so Huatli seems like a nice match.
Beej (Sarkhan)
So this was what the LRR folks picked at the panel, and it catches a lot of people offguard. The universal first response I think is Tibalt, E̻̻͙̭̼̅́ͯ̒ͅX̸̠̫̟̙̣̮͔ͬͯ̈́ͤͤP͌ͨͫ̄́͏̠͉Eͦͨͨ͊͂̓҉̱R̷̠͔̮̲̥̘͚̄̈́̅ͧ̇̃I̲̙̗͇͌ͮ̃́̚E̢͇̝͆ͪ̑̌ͧͮ̎NC̓̒̐͆͐͂ͭ҉̥̺̞E̠͖̐͊ͬ̔̐͊̎̕ ̮̪͒ͣ́͗͆̆̏͠B̥͍̳̲̠̳̀̓̏ͥͮ̈́ͣE͇̳̫͙͕ͅͅE͈̱̜͈̱̱̲J̼̉̔ͅ and all that. But, after thinking about it, Sarkhan is a rambling madman who turned out to know more about the universe than almost anyone, and isn’t that in the spirit of E̻̻͙̭̼̅́ͯ̒ͅX̸̠̫̟̙̣̮͔ͬͯ̈́ͤͤP͌ͨͫ̄́͏̠͉Eͦͨͨ͊͂̓҉̱R̷̠͔̮̲̥̘͚̄̈́̅ͧ̇̃I̲̙̗͇͌ͮ̃́̚E̢͇̝͆ͪ̑̌ͧͮ̎NC̓̒̐͆͐͂ͭ҉̥̺̞E̠͖̐͊ͬ̔̐͊̎̕ ̮̪͒ͣ́͗͆̆̏͠B̥͍̳̲̠̳̀̓̏ͥͮ̈́ͣE͇̳̫͙͕ͅͅE͈̱̜͈̱̱̲J̼̉̔ͅ?
Heather (Jaya)
This was another personal pick of mine, and I really like it. Cute but fierce is something I can totally see describing Heather. Like, Heather definitely has this very loving, innocent mindset, but anyone who has seen enough Rhythm Cafe knows that that statement isn’t entirely true. She also seems like someone who will fiercely protect her friends, and that’s something Jaya can definitely get behind.
Serge (Yanggu)
You knew it was coming. How could you not see it coming; the adorable doggo-wielding cinnamon roll who can surely kill you with his boyish smile while simultaneously actually killing you? Everyone in chat always protects Serge when bullies like Adam or James show up, even when Serge was sassing them seconds before. Also, Yanggu is a green mage, and we all know how Serge feels about lands.
Ben (Chandra)
In the words of Kathleen: “THIS ONE IS MY FINEST HOUR!!!!” Think about it. Ben has always said he’s most closely aligned with Red and Green, and here’s this planeswalker that can be both a wild child and super wholesome. Also, canonically a member of the LGBT+ community. ALSO, you KNOW Chandra is super supportive of people when she’s not immolating them. I didn’t even think of the Zippotricks McEdgelord thing until I was halfway through this. His individuality, his creativity, he is Chandra in disguise.
Adam (Koth of the Hammer)
Beefcake of the Mountains? Adam Savidan??? Absolutely. I will admit, this is what LRR said, and I would have gone for someone a little more studious since I know that’s a lot of the Adam we don’t see on camera, but as for what we DO see, hell yeah. I also find it hilarious that the guy acting as the conductor for the WE’RE HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERE train wasn’t even in War of the Spark. Rip in pieces, Koth. Matt G (Ral)
I’ll be honest, at time of posting, Matt is still fairly new to streams, and I haven’t seen a lot of stuff he’s done, but I’ve seen his personality through his editing (which is always amazing btw), and his creativity and very open personality is expressed greatly in Ral. Plus, I mean, when there’s low-hanging fruit, sometimes you’ve just gotta give the gay boi the gay boi.
(Bonus Friday Nights A-LRR-mni)
(Note that this is mainly their Friday Nights Personalities)
Jer P. (Teferi)
Super organized, methodical, intelligent. Who the heck is WILLING to sort their cards, let alone OTHER PEOPLE’S? Jer has had to since move on from LRR, which is sort of like Teferi retiring from planeswalking. And I mean, come on.
Matt W. (Ob Nixilis)
Hear me out. I’m not saying Matt is a demon. I am saying he is absolutely Ob BEFORE he broke the contract. Throughout his episodes in Friday Nights, he is ob-sessed (don’t you love my puns?) with winning. Furthermore, like Ian, decadence is a word that comes to mind when you consider the way he talks. A very sinister villain is Wiggins who returns every time we go back to Zendikar (or have a Desert Bus, but you get it) And that’s it!!! This was a fun homage as well as a much needed trip down memory lane. Hope everyone enjoys, while I know folks will disagree with my picks. Don’t forget to check out all of the links I hid in here. Big thanks to LRR for existing and being so wholesome and good. You guys rock.

In Today’s Magic Story...
Return to Dominaria: Episode 10
Last time we--
Wait. THAT ART ON THE LINK. IS IT--?
WE GET SLIMEFOOT IN TODAY’S STORY!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU MARTHA WELLS!!!!!!!!!
Okay, ah... back to the story.
Slimefoot isn’t referred to by gender specific pronouns. “As it grew out of its sporehood...” Good to know!
This sounds like the night when the phoenix attacked. But agreed, a whack wouldn’t be good at all.
“There’s fire outside but nope I’m staying with my comfy ship.” -- Slimefoot, probably.
A warm white star? I think that’s the powerstone containing the remnants of Serra’s realm. This thing really is a cure-all plot device! First the Weatherlight is running again, then Arvad’s vampirism is lessened, now Slimefoot feels safe again! Is there anything it cannot cure?
Well phyresis perhaps
Slimefoot knows that the ship is sailing through the sky, and it knows the word Thran.
This part is while Tiana and Arvad were guarding the ship.
This white star seems to be pulling all the strings here... Surrounding Tiana’s voice, calling Arvad from across the world... hmm...
Reminder that Arvad is the Weatherlight’s Chef.
Now they’re the desert, recruiting Teferi.
And now they’re in Yavimaya! My how time flies...
WAIT IT DOES ‘CAUSE TEFERI’S ON A SKYSHIP! GET IT!?
From what I recall of reading what other people wrote about reading the Weatherlight Saga, Karn got along really well with the previous Weatherlight. So of course the white star recognizes him.
Very interesting note here, about the patterns in her blood being the same in the ship’s bones... is it a reference to Urza’s bloodlines project?
Well yeah, I can imagine. Being the Father of the Machines for a while would cause you to view everything else as strange... actually no that sentence makes no sense whatsoever.
Jodah told you about Jaya, Jhoira? What did he tell you exactly?
Also god that’s a lot of names that start with J...
Reminder that Jaya and Jodah worked together during the Ice Age -- and if I recall correctly it was Jodah that ignited Jaya’s spark. Don’t quote me on that, though.
The white star doesn’t object to Liliana, which given what we know with the story spotlight cards is curious.
Gideon told her, "No, and I won't. It's not my story to tell, is it."
It’s not a question, it’s a statement.
Seems like Gideon’s patience is almost infinite.
Okay I just noticed something in the Slimefoot art.
If I can’t unsee this than neither will you!
Oi, be nice to Slimefoot. It doesn’t know it smells -- it doesn’t have a nose!
"Oh, holy Serra," Tiana said. Slimefoot waved at her.
Slimefoot you are so precious this makes up for the meme.
Actually yes, fungi on Dominaria are called thallids! On Alara, they’re predominantly known as either myconids or food.
Knowledge comes at a later phase of development? I guess???
Also if we don’t get a thallid race in Plane Shift Dominaria I will be incredibly sad.
Yes please put Raff and Slimefoot in the same room that would be perfect
Assent and slime curtains... huh.
Slimefoot has a different arm stalk for each person it meets. YES.
Yeah, it’s probably best to explain the fact that that thallids were used as a food source by elves way back when... it’s probably best to tell them later.
“Oh, hey, and it's had like ten babies already." "WHAT?" Tiana said.
These are my saprolings. There are others like them, but these are mine.
AND THEY WAVE BACK THEY’RE SO PRECIOUS
Well Raff isn’t wrong -- If that white light is Serra, she is fine with Slimefoot’s presence...
“Come with me my children! We’re going exploring!” -- Slimefoot, probably
Arvad spoke to Slimefoot: "Thallids, this is Liliana." Slimefoot waved a greeting at her, and prompted all the sprouts to do the same.
THEY’RE SO PRECIOUS I’M GONNA DIE
The fact that they don’t have eyes and can still stare at people means they’re incredibly talented.
Liliana you’re being an awful b*tch right now. Here’s someone tagging along to help you defeat Belzenlok and you’re questioning them?
AND YOU’RE MAKING SLIMEFOOT STARE AT THEM UNCOMFORTABLY YOU HAG!
Tiana had folded her arms, watching with a speculative expression. Now she said, "You're asking him how he resisted the urge to be selfish."
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOT DAMN! Now we know where Tiana gets her red from! You do not mess with her boyfriend!
And yes, this is obviously in the running for “Best Owns and Burns” Award!
Liliana’s trying to find other tricks to staying in control of the Chain veil.
Hang on, did Liliana just realize that Tiana’s an angel? What, did she think she was the lovechild of an aven and a human?
Aft is towards the rear of a ship.
Ah, so the elemental seed helped Slimefoot gain knowledge.
Gideon: “I must help Liliana defeat Belzenlok so she becomes strong enough to kill Nicol Bolas.” Also Gideon: “I ain’t got time to deal with thallids.”
Slimefoot thought almost being killed by a shovel and having to use its still-soft stalks to flee for its life up to shelter in the ship's engine compartment might qualify as a tragic past...
SLIMEFOOT YOU PRECIOUS FUNGUS CHILD
Jhoira adjusted her eyepiece. "You know, Raff, you don't have a tragic past either." "That's because he barely has a past," Shanna said.
Oof! Nearly on level with the burns Liliana recieved, but nevertheless also being nominated for “Best Owns and Burns” Award!
Okay the followup makes this on-par with the burns Liliana got -- because Jhoira saw the Tolarian Academy explode and got stuck in a time rift! This was a drawn-out burn!
Slimefoot wasn't sure how to express its appreciation, so it handed her another tool.
YOU’RE SO PRECIOUS--
Slimefoot thought it was a terrible idea.
I’m gonna screencap this line and save it for whenever someone does something obviously stupid and asks for an opinion.
We better get art of Raff babysitting the thallids!
They’ve only just met but Karn is being a better parent to Slimefoot than Urza ever was to him.
Also Chandra and Jaya are still yelling at each other.
I think that pulse was PTSD, considering what the Weatherlight experienced with OG Phyrexia.
I’ve never watched Karate Kid, but I think it’s something like this interaction between Jaya and Chandra.
"It was the first indication I'd ever seen that you were capable of concentrating on something for any length of time." -- JAYA “I STILL DON’T NEED PYROMANCY TO BURN YOU INTO THE F*CKING GROUND” BALLARD!!!!!
Nominated for “Best Owns and Burns award!”
"Hey, I wasn't that bad. I kind of know what I want. Sort of, sometimes." -- Chandra Nalaar
Nominated for “Pathetic Planeswalker Explanations” Award!
Also we know excatly what you want. Nissa
Ooh, they’re approaching Urborg...!
“Come children, let’s be safe with Serra’s light.” -- Slimefoot, definitely.
We get Slimefoot in the story and it’s all we could’ve asked for and more! Slimefoot! Don’t whack Slimefoot! Borgardan! Climbing! White stars! Slimefoot! Thran! Arvad’s cooking! Slimefoot! Karn! Jodah-Jhoira-Jaya! Almost infinite! Smells! Waving! More waving! Slimefoot babies! Following! Liliana being a b*tch and getting properly burned! Gideon ain’t got time to deal with thallids! Slimefoot handing tools! The epic tragedy of the burnt honey bread on Solstice morning! Time Rifts! Terrible ideas! Raff babysitting thallids! Good dad Karn! Phyrexia! Jaya! Chandra! Burns! Elf booty! Urborg!
But will Chandra admit her feelings about Nissa? Can Teferi za warudo the Stronghold’s defenses to get them through? Will the thallids behave themselves? What weapon was Gideon sharpening? How many more burns is Liliana gonna recieve before the story’s done?
AND WILL WE GET MORE SLIMEFOOT IN THE NEXT STORY?????????
Stay Tuned!

Doesn’t press F.
The man made a choice. He could have stayed and helped fight the Phyrexians. But instead he took his country and just... left. Turned tail and ran when Dominaria needed him most. I understand the situation was complicated. I understand that he had the best intentions. But, its is my perspective, it is my opinion, that doing what he did was tremendously immature and selfish. I see it as: he simultaneously deprived Dominaria of an entire nation’s worth of fighters and forced the Phyrexians destined to face that country upon its already struggling neighbors.
Still doesn’t press F.\
“F” to the people of Zhalfir.
“FU” to the man who shoved them into a timeless envelope.

Throne of Eldraine Preview Highlights
Oh, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. And if you read that in tune, sorry not sorry, but that’s where my head’s at right now. But it really is. It’s preview time! And not only that, but it’s preview time for one of the most flavorful and gorgeously illustrated sets in recent memory. I’m beyond stoked with what I’ve seen so far in Throne of Eldraine. So today, I’m going to run through some of the highlights from the preview season, focusing on Standard and the normal set, since I’ll go over Brawl cards when I review the set for Commander.
Starting with this guy:
Oko, Thief of Crowns, Purveyor of Thirst, Lord of Abs, and Champion of Queers, is here to say, “EAT THIS, BITCHES!” Seriously, Oko is the hotness, and the gay nerddom collectively gasped and dropped their drawers when this art came out. On top of that, as per the first few pages of the book (SPOILER if that matters), Oko very quickly dominates Garruk into submission, decides to call him “Dog,” and insists that he be called “Master.” So, um, yeah. Oko is officially admitted into the queer canon. Praise GAWD.
As a card, I’m liking it on first blush. Has some immediate utility potential in EDH, as it can blank basically any hard-to-answer threat in colors that don’t always get pure removal, but it’s going to be hard to get more than one use out of him, so I doubt he’ll be a format staple. For eternal 60 card formats, there’s a shot that a Modern deck could make use of him, probably dependent on how many other good uses there are for Food that come out. As for Standard, I’m sure there’s tons of potential, especially enabled by the next card powering him out on turn 2:
I’m starting high on Gilded Goose for Standard. This is as close as we’ve gotten to a Birds of Paradise in years, and that shouldn’t be underestimated. Remember, people were unsure at first if Aether Hub would be able to fix mana more than once, and turns out, it totally can. I think there’s definitely a Food deck somewhere in here, using this, Oko, and some other payoffs that may not have been enabled yet. But yeah, Llanowar Elves is rotating out, but 1-mana ramp isn’t dead.
Okay, I know I said I’d focus on Commander cards separately, but this card is so exciting. First, the flavor is just insane. I love the Monkey’s Paw theme here, and they did such a good job conveying it. Second, it is not hard at all to break parity on this, and I’ll have tons of thoughts when I get to the Commander post. For Standard, I could imagine it being possible for a Control deck to make it happen.
Loving this twist on The Abyss. In some ways, it’s actually better, since it can punish other control decks that try to hide behind Planeswalkers. It also makes it so token decks are punished appropriately by it, and the owner can’t hide behind tokens to keep it in play indefinitely. And if they have no nonland permanents at all, then you immediately get its sacrifice trigger. It’s a beautifully designed card, and I expect it to see Standard play, particularly in variants of Esper Control as a sideboard card for control mirrors and against certain other decks.
Of all the cards in the set so far, this one is the most immediately an obvious staple. Non-Rakdos decks have been missing a Hero’s Downfall effect, especially with Vraska’s Contempt rotating out, and I immediately see this card slotting into Monoblack decks, all forms of Control decks, W/B lifegain decks, Rakdos decks, and the likely upcoming Knights deck that Eldraine is promising. In other words, I think most Black decks will be interested in this, and that’s to say nothing of the homes it may find in Commander.
Wow, okay. First of all, I am BEYOND stoked that this card has quickly become the subject of Monty Python memes galore. If by some tragedy, you aren’t familiar, please educate yourself here: https://youtu.be/ZtYU87QNjPw
Aside from gorgeous artwork depicting a strange woman in a pond distributing swords, this card seems busted in Commander, and may find itself homes in other formats as well. I’m unsure about Standard, but there might be something. But it’s such a great card I had to highlight it.
Sea Monster! I love me some Sea Monster realness, and Nessie here is beyond cute and deserves all the hugs. Beyond that, I can potentially see him as a Control finisher, particularly against decks like Simic Flash, where casting this in response to them tapping out at the end of your turn is a much more viable option than trying to land a 6-drop Planeswalker. Maybe it’s a sideboard only card, but I’m definitely going to keep it in mind for my Dimir Control deck post-rotation.
Love this design. First of all, the flavor is off the charts, with the “Can’t be blocked except by creatures with haste” being one of the best lines I’ve seen on a Magic card in a while. Second, I actually think there’s Standard potential here, in the Red Cavalcade of Calamity deck that’s currently my second most hated deck of the Standard 2020 format (after Simic Flash, which is a deck designed for and by sociopaths). But yeah, there’s a home for this guy somewhere. My only quibble is that 1/1 doesn’t seem particularly ... brutish. Gingerbrat seems much more apt.
Hallelujah praise Kefnet! Opt is the glue that makes Blue decks in Standard work consistently, and I’m very happy to see this is sticking around. Sure, it’ll keep Simic Flash good, but it will also serve Blue-based control decks, and ensure that Izzet decks have a chance of finding a place in the meta. (Seriously, Izzet decks were basically doomed without Opt). It’s not an exciting preview for a lot of people, but it’s a sign to me that Play Design is doing a great job at making sure this format stays fun.
Oh, and the Monty Python references keep on coming. Again, here’s what they’re getting at: https://youtu.be/ZmInkxbvlCs
I don’t know if this card will be playable, but damn if it isn’t funny.
Control decks are going to jam this into their sideboards, make no mistake. Even a one or two of in the mainboard could make sense in decks without access to Thought Erasure, but it’s a little risky to jam if the metagame moves away from Black too much.
I can’t imagine Red decks won’t be interested in this. It seems incredibly versatile, as a well-costed threat or as reasonable removal. Or, y’know... both, because Adventures are totally cool like that. And the Rare cards with the mechanic generally have potential to be straight 2 for 1s. I’d even consider this against Control decks with lots of Planeswalkers, as this can take out a minused Teferi, Narset, Liliana, or Ugin with no trouble.
Hot damn, literally. This seems like it’s either going to be a major card in an archetype that doesn’t exist yet, or it’s going to be a big pile of nothing and end up in the bulk bin. I mean, it can ramp you super quickly to Drakuseth or Boss Chandra, and those are pretty reasonable options. Beyond Standard, I absolutely see this having a home in EDH, for decks that also run Mana Geyser and the like.
I’m loving Grumgully, mostly for his potential in non-Standard formats. He has enormous combo potential (mainly around Persist), and I really want to see an Against the Odds episode built around this for Modern. That’s all.
I saved Questing Beast for last, not because of any particular reason, but just because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to talk about it at all. But I think I have to. This card is beyond pushed. It will be a nightmare bomb in Limited, and it’s sure to see tons of play in Standard as a very direct Planeswalker punisher. Oh, you tapped out for Liliana for 6? Cute Zombies, I’ll just blaze past them, hit you for 4, and take Lili down far enough she can’t use her removal ability, all at once. Ugin, same problem. Narset? One hit & done. Dovin? Good luck with that damage prevention ability.
And on top of everything, it stays untapped so you can’t even retaliate effectively. Basically what I’m saying is there’s no way this card isn’t going to be a powerhouse for Standard for the next 2 years, but especially as long as War of the Spark is still legal. Planeswalkers have a new worst enemy.
Anyhoo, that’s it for today. My picks for most interesting and impactful cards previewed thus far. Excited to get my hands on some packs and start playing with them!
