In NoHoper Part II news, I'm currently delving into House of Night worldbuilding notes I made in January/February 2020 about what would happen if someone became a vampyre and yet resisted drinking blood to a dangerous, pathological degree. Because, once again, I have thought so much more about this world than the authors have, and still it shows.

A Non-Exhaustive Guide to Vampire Fiction from its creation to the modern day

I was making this list because @optimistic-autistic asked me for vampire recs and I realised I get asked this question often enough that it would genuinely be easier for me to just make a post on Tumblr and keep on adding to it whenever I come up with something new and just linking it whenever someone asks me again.

Some things on this list are, some are romance, some are both and some are neither but without further ado, i present to you my Magnum Opus (unfinished and ever growing)

Historical Vampire Fiction (aka what shaped the genre):

1. The Vampyre by John Polidori (created the genre of romantic vampire fiction)

2. Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu (created the trope of lesbian vampires)

3. Dracula by Bram Stoker (obvious reasons)

4. Interview with the Vampire (the book) (i suggest starting with The Vampire Lestat since IWTV can get... A bit boring?)

5. Twilight (Look do i think it is good? No. Do i realise the irrevocable and irreversible impact it has had on vampire fiction as a whole? Unfortunately yes.) (it is still incredibly racist and anti-indigenous and yes the Quileute Tribe still has not seen any remunerations as far as I know)

Vampire Movies (I don't really watch movies that much so this list isn't as big as the rest but i still wanted to make an attempt):

1. Nosferatu 2024 (anti-intellectualism side of the internet has hit this movie hard go watch it immediately and I cannot make it clearer to you that gothic fiction is not meant to be sanitised please for the love of God do not apply your human morals to this)

2. Nosferatu the Vampire (the one from the 1970s)

3. The Original Nosferatu from 1922 (I love it because it proves that media and digital piracy is the ethically right option) (in general my only suggestion is to watch all the nosferatus)

4. Dracula's Daughter (incredibly sapphic coded, but then again it was released just two years after the hayes code ending)

5. What We Do in The Shadows (the movie)

TV Shows (most people on Tumblr probably know about the majority of these already but I still wanna list them):

1. Interview with the Vampire (not the movie)

2. What We Do in the Shadows (Queer)

3. Carmilla the Web series (it's on YouTube)

4. First Kill (very cheezy and cringe in the typical teen tv show sense but it's sapphic)

5. The entire Vampire Diaries and it's spin-off The Originals {i had to fucking list it I'm sorry. I was on the front lines simping after kai parker and writing stefan Salvatore/klaus mikaelson fanfiction (that i never published thank the good lord) I would not be staying true to my roots if I did not acknowledge this)

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Every single one! I love responding to comments because I love the conversation, the back and forth. It's my absolute favorite part of writing and reading fanfiction. It may take me a while but I will eventually get to every single one.

What's the fic you wrote with the angsties ending?

A Promise Kept

It's my only fic with Major Character Death and it's, uh, real sad. Made myself cry with this one.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Distractions. It's pretty fluffy from start to finish.

Do you get hate on fics?

Occasionally. It's not usually that bad but I've gotten the random hate comment. When it's 1 in every 70 comments they tend to just disappear under all of the love and support.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Sure do! It is few and far between but I've branched out and have written some more detailed smut recently. It tends to be pretty straight forward smut, pretty romantic and flowery.

Do you write cross overs? What's the craziest one you've written?

No crossovers from me!

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nope, thankfully.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, I haven't.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I haven't but I have collaborated on ideas with @floundrickthewayfarer to write our own spin on the same idea a few times and that has always been fun.

What's your all time favorite ship?

I'm quite fond of CodyWan and Echo/Quinlan and Fox/Quinlan. I have loved maaaaaany ships. Like Arthur/John/Oscar (Malevolent), Reid/McCullum (Vampyr), Artemy/Daniil (Pathologic 2), Charles/Arthur (RDR2), and the list really goes on and on. I'm a fairly flexible shipper so there's a lot of ships I enjoy and bounce between I just don't tend to write for ships very often lol. These are a few that stand out, though.

What's a WIP you'd like to finish but doubt you ever wilI?

That's a tough one. I started working on one that is literally just the letters Echo would write to his loved ones in the event that he died on a mission and left letters to them. A follow up to A Promise Kept. It takes a lot of emotional energy to write so I can see me abandoning that one.

What are your writing strengths?

Emotions. Lots of emotions. Sticking to a schedule lol. Physical connections in fics (shoulder touches, cuddling, etc.) I am great at writing angst followed by a nice soft fluff then some angst again.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I tend to forget the characters are in a room. Like, I often describe what characters are doing with each other, how they're moving, etc, but they end up kind of... floating in a blank room. I forget about the scenery. I forget to describe the scenery. I forget that's important. I also get stuck if I have a tough writing day. Then I tend to... not keep writing. I give up. It's a bad habit I have to break.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I would certainly love to do this and I love when I see it done in a fic.

First fandom you wrote for?

I feel like I answer this question different every single time bc I forget lol. If we're talking the very first fandom I'm thinking it was something like Teen Wolf or Supernatural tbh.

Favorite fic you've ever written?

I'm going to have to say Blind Trust for this one. I love this fic. It was completely self indulgent and I am planning on writing fics with the same vibe in the future. I just wrote what I wanted and that was fun as hell.

The ungodly urge to write a fic for IASIP that takes place in the universe of a book series I loved as a tween called House of Night

Context: it's a vampire book series where teens are marked to become vampires and they go to a school while their bodies make the change. 50% change you'll die tho by your body rejecting it. Blue vampyres are fledglings who complete the change. Red vampyres rejected the change and died, but then got brought back to life and aren't completely right. They're like traditional vampires unlike the blue, and are newer and pretty much unknown atp. This book series reflects the time it was written in just like IASIP does by how it's written.

The basis would be Mac is a human and Charlie is a blue vampyre. They're childhood friends still; Mac just still hangs out around Charlie even after he gets taken away to the House of Night. Charlie snuck out a TON during his fledgling years to see Mac. Eventually, Charlie becomes bound to Mac through the Warrior oath. Charlie thought it would be funny to try because he didn't realize that anyone could do it. So now he's sworn to protect Mac until he dies. His afinity is he's able to communicate with animals :)

But here is where it gets MESSY. Because tbh if it is a HON crossover it has to be messy.

Dennis was Charlie's roommate during their time as fledglings. He was the top of his class and was a Dark Son (think of a high school frat basically) and everything. He has an afinity for fire and used it to do party tricks to impress girls. But in their third year, his body rejects the change while the Tulsa high priestess is in town (she is on a trip to collect a different student to transfer her) and dies. He wakes up in a basement with Charlie over him, panicking. Charlie is saying how he said he'd stick with Dennis through it and got him somewhere else (Charlie went to find his body to be sad over his friend dying and found him as a red fledgling lol. Charlie is the first blood Dennis had 😎👍)

Charlie hides Dennis for YEARS. Like. Years. He makes the change and moves Dennis underground to a basement he rents out with help from Frank. This is when Mac and Dennis meet again. Dennis turns into a full vampyre because he protects Mac from someone trying to kidnap him (Mac was trying to find Charlie and followed him to the basement)

Dennis, like a bastard, ends up feeding too much on Mac later on and they get imprinted.

So it's literally just human Mac with his blue vampyre warrior Charlie and then his red vampyre imprint Dennis. It is the most chaotic thing because Charlie and Dennis bicker and fight a lot because Charlie's oath is stronger and permanent while Dennis's imprint is until it fades or he breaks it. Which he threatens Mac with a few times because Dennis is a dick, and a red vampyre (breaking an imprint horrible for the human. Like. They feel like part of them dies and it's HORRIBLE. They have no will to live).

Red vampyres are also usually just assholes because they lose their humanity when they are brought back to life. So Dennis is struggling to balance himself because on one hand... He lost his humanity for years and only got it back and still can be horrible due to it. Bro is literally with a god hole because he stopped feeling for years and lost everything that made him feel emotions other than hunger/negative emotions and he has the ability again but it's still hard for him.

Also, Mac's Catholicism vs the knowledge that a goddess who isn't God exists and his best friend is one of her children through being a vampire

Anyways. I doubt anyone would be interested in this so congrats if you read this

8. Where did you find movie recommandations?

I'm sorry this is probably not the answer you wanted but by talking with friends and colleagues. Lately I've been told I should watch Teen Beach Movie (by Jeffrey Hornaday) and Golden Eighties (by Chantal Akerman). I love that these are both how people see me.

Also my boyfriend is a huge movie buff so almost every evening he tells me what he's going to watch and I can decide if I'm interested to watch with him or not. We love discovering classic and/or asian movies together !

13. What was your favorite non-Hollywood movie you saw ?

I guess it's a tie between Jawan (by Atlee) and Twilight of the Warriors : Walled In (by Soy Cheang) !

Labyrinth, 1986 (loved it)

Pather Panchali, 1955 (was a bit long but interesting, need to watch the rest of the serie)

Chungking Express, 1994 (meh, it's one of my best friend's favourite movie she still hates me for not liking it)

The Prestige, 2006 (watching it was ok, and then the more I thought about it and about Nolan the more I hated them both)

The Red Shoes, 1948 (love love love give me more surreal fairy tales movie like this or Donkey Skin or Beauty and the Beast)

The Old Gun, 1975 (probably one of my favourite movies from this year. So beautiful, so emotional. The people asks for Philippe Noiret tricking nazis Home Alone style in his castle in southern France to finally use a flamethrower on them, and the people shall receive)

The Band Wagon, 1953 (sadly don't have much memories from it. I do like Fred Astaire but all of his movies get mixed up in my brain)

Marius, 1931 (just feels like home, I love Marcel Pagnol so much)

Creeped Out Presents Vampyr By Nightfall

This short lived British/Canadian horror anthology series was believe it or not gonna get a theatrical spin-off film. After the second season ended, series writer Emma Campbell wrote and even pitched a full-fledged Creeped Out movie with the two creators approaching the Spierig Brothers - the directing duo behind Undead, Daybreakers, Predestination, Jigsaw (the worst Saw film), a stupid ass Winchester movie with Helen Mirren for some reason and an upcoming sequel to Fall - to potentially helm it. However, it fell through due to a simple lack of any interest.

The premise for it was a recently divorced mother discovering to her horror that her estranged teen daughter has become a blood-thirsty and gore-craving vampire by her new gang of friends she's fallen into who it turns out are led by a crooked reverend who uses them to secretly fund his church.

so something only hinted at in the last ask is that it's an au to the comic canon. Basically what if Morpheus reincarnated like Nada once Daniel took over?

he still met Hob in 1389, but because in this universe Night/Nyx is meddling permanently with humans, her reaction to Morpheus' wager is "alright then, he's mine now", leading to Hob being an Ultra-Late-Bloomer (thirties instead of late teens-early twenties back then. doesn't make sense to turn some malnourished 15 year old if the change woud kill them, does it?)

his working theory is that the Trackers just missed him in the midst of the plague and battlefield and that his Stranger gave them a firm talking to, since no other mature vampyr has heard of a similar case and hey he gets it, it's kinda Embarassing to admit if it was their fault

now this is a bit of a problem, because when Morpheus entered the house of night, it was easy enough thougt to push back. Hob wasn't joking when he said that Morpheus fit right in- he's pale and graceful, but clearly still human. any similarities to his Stranger are a coincidence

and then they go from sneaking around to sneaking around, Morpheus cornering him in the classroom or the stacks in the library, expression every bit of imperious Lordling while also shyly wringing his hands

it's so easy to draw him in, to press kisses to his high, dramatic cheeks, to offer his own neck in return while shoving his tigh in-between Morpheus'. everything he'd wanted to offer to his Stranger but didn't get a chance to

which means this is the perfect time for one of Hob's old mentees to pay a visit

the first time Morpheus finds Hob sitting at one of the library tables, deep in conversation with this unknown vampyr, all he wants to do is take a seat in Hob's lap because Hob is his. Better yet, drag Hob back to his flat and rub up against hjm until every vampyr in London can smell Morpheus on him

of course before he can actually try to follow through on that impulse, Hob catches sight of him and waves him over

"this here is Jim", Hob introduces them, "my very first mentee. i thought maybe you'd like to hear someone else chatter about their experiences for a change."

of course when he hears "Mentee" Morpheus hears "other person I slept with" and is as grumpy and taciturn as always

Jim, bless him, takes the entire thing with good humor and pulls out the most embarrassing stories of Hob he has once they are left alone together

only under the threat of death will Morpheus admit that it works and that he starts to relax eventually. even permits Jim to squeeze his shoulder

"Don't worry about the crush", Jim says, "But don't get your hopes up either. Hob will never do anything to embarrass you, but he's too far gone on this 'old friend' to consider anyone else"

Morpheus thinks of all the things he did with Hob barely 24 hours ago and swallows

As I mentioned, I haven’t actually read this book series but. BUT. I am still so invested in this au. Hob pining for his Stranger, not knowing that Morpheus is his stranger??? Amazing. The internal angst of Hob wanting to remain loyal to his stranger, loving him eternally but also…… he has this spark with Morpheus that he can’t ignore! He can’t stop himself from wanting to give Morpheus everything, too!!

I’m imagining them seeing the tension between Morpheus and Hob and slowly, slowly realising… Jim pulls Hob off to one side and is like “are you????? fucking??????” And Hob turns bright red. Oops.

It’s too late now, Hob doesn’t think he could stop if he tried. And Morpheus is obsessed. There’s probably nothing he wouldn’t do to stay with Hob. This “old friend” person can kindly fuck off, alright? Hob belongs to Morpheus now.
