i've been endlessly re-reading my fic for the revamp to the point where i've had to pause and come back with fresh eyes more times than i can count. today though, rather than me reading through and attempting to add scenes, fix continuity errors, tweak paragraph breaks, change diction and sentence structure, and wrestle with minor grammatical issues that i've agonized over for too long, i finished writing up a list of problems rather than attempting to remember all of the things i needed to look for and edit out at once.
i've already edited out FIVE separate issues from all chapters (thank you word search!) by focusing on one issue and taking it one chapter at a time. they were mostly grammatical fixes, but i did double-check that obi-wan didn't have any inconsistencies about his feelings on family prior to his realization in chapter 6. i still have to tackle some grammar, do some lore checking, and write up some small scenes and then ensure the following chapters address them, but i've accomplished more in a few hours than i have in like a week of not prioritizing one issue rather than trying to read through without a concrete focus and getting overwhelmed.
if you're struggling with editing a longer piece, i highly, HIGHLY recommend doing this once you've read through enough times to get a feel for the issues you have!!!!
#i think the reason i haven't approached it this way sooner is bc i've exclusively completed and finished one shots (time & tide is 3 chaps#technically and i banged it out for 3 fox week prompts but i wrote it like a oneshot and it's only 7.5k)#and bc my oneshots r much shorter than mtb i've been able to get by with doing many general read thrus without getting entirely overwhelmed#that is NOT sustainable for longer projects for me!! i've never formally studied how to edit longform fiction before and this has made me#realize that i need to rectify that!#len speaks
