More on Merc and Ren in MRNE au-

Neither of them are thrilled about the partner situation, but since the person they wanted is still on the team, they kinda just deal with it

Ren also isn’t exactly thrilled with Merc and Nora’s near constant arguing/passive aggressiveness with each other. He’s usually the only reason things don’t get too out of hand, tho Em has broken up her fair share of their arguments

By the time Glynda threatens them if they don’t cut it out, Ren has stopped asking Mercury to join him during his meditation time and forces him to because he needs to chill

Merc is a little shit about it at first, but realizes that keeping up the front is going to be a lot harder if he keeps getting in trouble. Besides, Ren and Nora seem to be pretty close with that Nikos girl...

He doesn’t really enjoy the complete silence, so he starts rambling to Ren about random things at first, mostly about his comics. Ren often gives his own input, because he used to read them all the time with Nora. This is what they initially start bonding over

Merc starts to catch on that Ren may not say much, but he does listen. He made mention of something one time, and like a month later it came up again and Ren mentioned it and Merc was just floored because he’s never had someone do that before????

This is about when Mercury starts to Doubt:tm: that the whole assassin thing is really what he wants to do. He always felt like he’s never had a choice and now he has friends???? That care about him???

Even though he won’t admit it, he’s more afraid of Cinder than he let’s on so he keeps going ahead with the plan. He still has the sparring match with Pyrrha and still reports back to Cinder with the same info

By the time the dance rolls around, Ren and Merc are actually pretty close, with both of them having opened up a bit about their respective pasts without giving too many specifics.

Since the girls are going together (Nora asks Em), Ren and Mercury have like an unspoken agreement that they’d go together. Mercury needed to be there anyway as lookout for Cinder, and Ren just... really loves to dance, okay

Both Em and Merc end up actually enjoying themselves way more than they thought they would, and almost completely forget about Cinder (this does not go over well with her)

There’s still a team dance routine. I refuse to not let that happen.

Nora was a little distraught when she didn’t find Ren first. And her nerves didn’t really calm down until after the teaming ceremony when she found out she’d at least be on the same team as him.

The first few weeks especially were... less then pleasant. Nora and Merc were almost constantly at each other’s throats. It wasn’t until Goodwitch threatened expulsion that they started to chill out.

Nora and Ren both realized pretty quickly that Emerald especially was food motivated like them. This led to lots of bribes in the form of her favorite foods to try and get her to trust them.

Nora thought the burns that Em kept coming back with were from some sort of training, but after she noticed one was a distinct handprint, she finally asked about it. Em didn’t give her any answers, and Nora basically told her that she needed to start trusting her sooner or later.

When Em comes clean after the PvP fight, Nora just hugs her and tells her she wishes she’d told her sooner so maybe they could’ve gotten her and Merc out of whatever situation they were in. She absolutely refuses to leave Em’s side the rest of the night, and goes directly to Ozpin to warn him about the rest of Cinder’s plans.

Mercury Black, Lie Ren, Nora Valkyrie , Emerald Sustrai

As you can tell, this is heavily canon divergent from the start. Basically, instead of team CMNE at Haven, Em and Merc get sent to Beacon to scout things out more thoroughly.

The plan is for them to be partners. This falls apart when instead of running into Nora after fighting the King Taijitu, Ren runs into Mercury before hand. Neither of them are happy about it.

Around the same time, Nora stumbles across Emerald. Nora’s a bit disappointed, and Em panics internally

When they collect the relics, Nora still takes the rook, and Mercury takes the other.

RWBY happens the same as in canon

Jaune and Pyrrha are still partners, the other half of their team is currently undecided

Mercury is made team leader, and Nora is not happy about it. They butt heads a lot, and it isn’t until Goodwitch threatens to expel them that they start to cool off.

Ren and Nora find it a bit odd that Em and Merc tend to disappear every once in a while, but don’t think too much of it

Nora’s the first to try and actually get closer to her partner, and Emerald realizes just how similar they actually are as they start opening up to each other

Merc realizes that he actually enjoys Ren’s company. He doesn’t force a conversation, and his calm demeanor does a lot to take Mercury’s edge off

Okay do you have more on team MRNE cause??? omg i need more of that in my life

So far I’ve got this one that covers the basic set up of it, and this one that touches more one Merc and Ren’s side of things. So now I’m gonna take this opportunity to ramble about Nora and Emerald-

Nora obviously isn’t too happy with not being Ren’s partner, but she’s still on the same team so she’s fine with it. Em puts on her best ‘this is fine’ face and much like she does around RWBY in canon, pretends to be happy/excited

She knows her next meeting with Cinder is going to go poorly, because she was supposed to partner with Merc, and then try and team with ‘that Nikos girl’ so they could get they could see what she’s really all about. Luckily though, the three teams (RWBY, MRNE, and JP//) hang out a lot

Nora’s still her normal chattery self, so she’s always asking Em random questions or rambling on about herself. So it doesn’t really take long for them to realize how much they actually have in common.

Emerald realizes she’s actually starting to really enjoy Nora’s presence, and starts not liking that she has to lie to her about where her and Merc run off to sometimes. (Nora just assumes they’re ‘together-together’ and want some privacy. Em won’t tell her otherwise.)  

By the time they figure out Pyrrha’s semblance, Emerald is severely doubting if she still wants to help Cinder. Not only does she care about Nora, and even Ren, but she’s grown fond of the rest of their friends too. She brings this up with Merc, and in true Merc fashion says that he’s just pretending to care. It’s just a job, and it’ll be done soon (he’s lying to himself and they both know it)

At some point during the semester, Nora notices that Em comes back from wherever she goes with Merc with some burn marks. She tries to chalk it up to just some training gone wrong even if her gut tells her otherwise. She tries bringing it up with Emerald a few times, but Em just shrugs it off so Nora doesn’t press her about it.

By the time of the dance, they’ve both got Pretty Obvious Crushes that they refuse to acknowledge, however Nora does ask Em to go with her. Ya know, as ‘friends’

They have a good time, and this is when Em really changes her mind about the upcoming tournament and what it means is going to happen

Merc and Yang still advance to finals for their rounds, but Em doesn’t use a hallucination on Yang to frame her. She does still try and use one of Pyrrha, and Nora notices that Em isn’t looking too good but it’s too little too late. By the time Nora gets Emerald to snap out of it, Penny’s already well... that doesn’t change. 

Em just starts crying and pulls Nora aside to explain everything. She expects Nora to hate her, to push her away, to react violently, anything. Instead, Nora hugs her, and tells her it’s going to be okay. They’ll figure this out and get her out of Cinder’s grasp. 

All hell starts breaking loose because of the panic, and the Fall pretty much goes the same. Beacon still gets destroyed, Pyrrha still dies, and Cinder still gets the full maiden powers. The only real difference is that Merc and Em aren’t at her side anymore, they stayed to fight. Alongside their friends. Their family.

I’ve been thinking about it. It’s mostly heavily based around an rp I have with one of my friends, and I just kinda needed to get my Thoughts out about it.

Maybe once I actually get my motivation back for lengthy writing I will. I still haven’t updated my Hunger Games au fic since I posted it oops.
