I'm not black, but I do have "ethnic" hair so curly, thick and coarse that a classmate once complained that if I wore it down, he couldn't see the blackboard past it. And that definitely wasn't the worst of the comments that I and similarly wild-haired little girls in my class were subject to. So I found Cozbi A. Cabrera's "My Hair is a Garden" (2018) both deeply relatable and heart-warming. The story of a little girl who is mocked for having hair that is both unfamiliar to her classmates and hard to handle, and the lessons she receives at the knee of a beloved mentor about how to embrace the beauty of her differences rather than resent them, will ring familiar to many children for many reasons. And the specific lessons about black hair care and hairstyles are a beautiful way of introducing kids to lives, experiences and daily rituals that may differ from their own. A gorgeous, heartfelt book. 🌸 ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #myhairisagarden #cozbiacabrera #cozbicabrera #albertwhitman #hair #haircare #blackgirls #blackhair #blackgirlmagic #blackhairmagic #blackhairisbeautiful #blackkids #diversebooksforkids #weneeddiversebooks #diversitymatters #representationinbooks #representationmatters #diversityandrepresentation #booklove #teachergram #teachingdiversity #booksthatmatter #homeschoolcommunity #primaryeducation #raisingkindkids #picturebooklove #readingforgrowth #booksthatchangedmylife https://www.instagram.com/p/B3AMCwXHV_W/?igshid=1b4pk8rhlm4
