[ENG translation] Joker Out, the kings of charisma, conquer Europe: "What's happening is incredible!"
Interview with Bojan and Jure. The original article was written by Alma Rahne for Metropolitan, it was published on 29.12.2023. English translation by @varianestoroff, proof read by a member of JokerOutSubs.

Travel to the other side of the world, learn Slovene and queue for the concert from 7 am. The fans are willing to do all this for them. If 2023 was a year of overachievement for Joker Out, get ready for the new wave coming in 2024.
It's been a very successful year for the boys, if not the best year yet. With their Eurovision performance, watched by around 200 million people worldwide, their musical fairytale has begun.
Although they ended up in 21st place, undeserved according to many, they put their joker* to good use. But they have left their mark on Europe, as Eurovision fans voted them kings of charisma just a few days ago.
*The Joker is a playing card found in most modern French-suited card decks, as an addition to the standard four suits. It often acts as a wild card (a card that may be used to represent another card or cards). Here, the journalist creates a pun based on the value of the card and the name of the band.
In life, as with cards, sometimes you have to take risks to win. And Joker Out are definitely the winners, having achieved more out of their 3-minute Eurovision performance than they might have dared to dream of in the first place.
A few days ago, the boys successfully ended their first European tour, where their fans sang out loud in Slovene and started learning the language because of them. It sounds unbelievable, but that's what they achieved this year. Every time we meet - whether for interviews, backstage at gigs or on the street - I notice that despite all their achievements over the last year, they are down to Earth and true to themselves and really enjoy what they do.

I would dare to say that they are currently the only band in Slovenia that proves that they can break boundaries and impress abroad with their authenticity, perseverance and singing in Slovene. With his consent, I'm going to borrow the words of the fellow journalist Gašper Završnik, a correspondent of Delo in Madrid, who was also at their December concert. He described his impressions and their performance by saying, "Joker Out are to Slovene what the Cervantes Institute* is to Spanish." He later told me that he could not remember such euphoria about a foreign band in Spain.
*The Cervantes Institute is a public cultural institution created with the aim of promoting and teaching the Spanish language and disseminating Spanish and Hispanic culture.
With New Year just around the corner, it's only right to look back and see first-hand how Bojan Cvjetićanin and Jure Maček, members of Joker Out, spent 2023. Before they and the other members Kris Guštin, Jan Peteh and Nace Jordan perform in front of the Slovenian audience for the last time this year on Saturday the 30th of December at Kongresni trg, in this interview they revealed their plans for 2024, talked about life on tour and gave details of their new upcoming single.
How would you describe the year behind you?
Jure: We collected a lot of miles by buying so many plane tickets. We had lots of flights, Bojan would say it was very turbulent. But for me it was quite a hard year.
Bojan: I would say a perfect year. We really seized it to the fullest. I think we have milked 2023 dry. We have done everything, we have really put everything we have in us. We have given every last inch of ourselves, but we have also taken everything we could.

Since you devoted yourselves especially to music and your career, was there any field in which you weren't the best?
Bojan: My garden bed fell apart.
Jure: I don't have a girlfriend.
Bojan: Neither do I. (laughs) We don't have a girlfriend, we don't have money...
Jure: We see our family more rarely.
Bojan: See, a great year. (laughs)

Bojan, you mentioned that your biggest goal was to perform at the Sziget festival, which you will do next year. What's next, will you set a new goal?
I told myself that I didn't want new goals to determine success. Let's say, we always had in the back of our minds that this is something that happens and means success. We always saw Sziget as, "You really succeed when you perform on the main stage at Sziget." For us (Jokers) it's the most legendary festival in Europe. And once we conquer that, as far as I'm concerned, there are no more goals that determine success. For me, it's all a plus after that and I want us to make new music, have a good time and enjoy it. Like we are now, with the new single. Every time we record a new song we're going to be happy, listen to it, play it a thousand times and call each other to say how good it is. That's all I want.
Have you ever been to Sziget?
Jure: No, never.
Bojan: Unfortunately not, I had everything ready to go twice. Once I got sick, and the other time we had a concert the day before.

What do you do when a Joker Out concert coincides with something else you've been wanting to visit or see for a while? Career probably has priority... Is there a bitter aftertaste that night at the concert?
Bojan: Let's not lie to ourselves. It depends on the gig. If it's something that you would love to miss, but you have to do it because it's the whole band's business, not your own, then you might go on stage with a bitter aftertaste.
Jure: We just had a concert in Celje and at the same time my former band Čedahuči had a concert in Kino Šiška. I really wanted to go, but it didn't work out.
Bojan: It really hurts then, but what can you do, that's just the way it is. But it was a great concert in Celje. I got sick, I was on stage with a fever. I would have liked to lie at home, but in the end the concert healed me. I sweated there, I excercised a little and I changed my mindset. I woke up the next day 200 times better.
You've just finished recording a new single. What can you reveal?
Jure: We can say that it is a ballad.I think I can feel it the most out of the all songs so far.
Bojan: I would say it's the most different so far. Maybe as a songwriter I put myself out there most directly, it's quite a therapeutic song.
Where did the inspiration come from?
Bojan: At the end of July, things started happening and inspired me to write this song. The lyrics didn't take long to develop. I wrote the main part when we were in the studio recording the English single 'Sunny Side of London'. That's when this 'jam' happened, which we took as the basis for the song. I had already written the lyrics for the verses and the chorus... I can reveal that the song will be in English (smiles).

How do you approach songwriting? With the aim of making it a hit?
Jure: No, we all just have to feel the song. That's the most important thing.
Bojan: I think the release of the upcoming single is very brave for a band in our position. Because it's quite possible that it won't be a hit at all. The song is really different... but if people feel the song the way we did, it could be our biggest hit. We really didn't play the 'certainty card'.
Have you ever thought about writing a song using ChatGPT*?
Bojan: No, but we have tested how it works.
*ChatGPT is a chatbot based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, developed by OpenAI and specialised in conversation with a human user.
Fans bring different banners to your concerts, which they make themselves. Is there a sign that you remember the most?
Jure: I'm the furthest away from the audience and I see the least of them (laughs). I don't remember any in particular at the moment. But I have to say that they are really original.
Bojan: They're really sick, because they're so indecent (laughs). I often times couldn't stop myself from laughing in the middle of singing, thinking, 'who thought of that?' But it's really sick, because they hold it up for an hour and wait for me to read it.
Jure: And the people behind them are shouting at them and asking them to move it, because it's blocking their view of the stage (laughs).
Bojan: I think the one that got my attention the most was in Rijeka: "Bojan, why did you invite so many people to our date?" They can be really creative.

A fellow journalist from Delo attended your concert in Madrid at the beginning of December and wrote on social media: Joker Out is to Slovene what the Cervantes Institute is to Spanish. Those of us who are involved, connected with Spanish, know that this is a great compliment. Any comment?
Bojan: I saw what he wrote, and as I am also a bit involved with Spanish (smiles), I was very honoured that it came out of his mouth. The concert in Madrid was really excellent. It was an explosion of energy that can only happen by accident, and I am glad that he was at that concert. In fact, what is happening is incredible. We go around Europe and people sing in Slovene for an hour and a half. That is probably something that has never happened before. They are learning phrases in Slovene so that they can say them to us. They bring us textbooks and dictionaries to sign.
Do you feel that you have such a big influence on your fans? Did you ever imagine that your fans would learn Slovene because of you?
Jure: That's so weird. It's like being in a bubble all the time.
Bojan: We are not personifying these people. On stage, we are ourselves, but still an acquaintance. There I am Bojan Cvjetićanin for them, but for myself I am Bojč. I am Bojč when none of the band members take me seriously. Or when they flip me off if I say something stupid. (smiles) When I get home, though, I'm the same Bojč that I was when I was 10 years old. I don't think you can understand that, which is fine. Thank God... I'm still myself on stage, just in a different role.
What is the hardest part of touring?
Jure: Just the journey, the means of transportation - planes.
Bojan: Getting sick.
What is a typical day like for you when you are on tour?
Jure: After the concert we go straight to the hotel, shower and sleep as soon as possible. Around 2am we fall asleep, and between 4am and 5am we're awake because we have a flight to catch. We have to be at the airport at 7, we have a flight at 8 and we are in the next city, the next country, by 11. Then we go to the concert venue, we get there between 1 and 2 pm. From 2 to 4 we are free, then we go to the hotel to rest a little. Our technicians have it worse, because they start preparing the stage, the sound system. Between 4 and 5 there is the sound check, dinner at 6 and the concert at 8. And the next day we repeat it again. (Smiles)
What about on the tour bus?
Jure: You have your own home on the bus. The day looks similar, except that we shower after the concert backstage and get on the bus when we want, fall asleep and wake up when we want. That is the main difference. Because you're driving overnight and you usually get to the next town at 10 o'clock, wake up, look out the window and you're somewhere else.
Bojan: Usually the tour bus is parked outside the concert venue.
Are your most passionate fans waiting for you outside the bus?
Bojan: That too. Last time I woke up at seven to go to the toilet and look out the window. We had just come from Wroclaw to Poznan and there were 50 people outside and I was still dizzy (laughs).
Jure: It's much easier to travel by bus. When I came back from Poland after a 10-day tour in a tour bus, I joked that I came back so fresh that I could come home at 10 o'clock and say, "Mother, what can I do today?"(Smiles).

In your experience, what contributes more to success: talent or hard work?
Bojan: Neither. But many people have gone very far with hard work, even if they didn't have much talent. I would say that hard work is important and surrounding yourself with people who have talent and want the best for you. If you don't have talent yourself.
With the New Year, you are going abroad. What is the main purpose, what will you be doing?
Jure: We're moving to London for two months at the beginning of January. We've rented a house and a garage there, where we'll work and rehearse the new songs. Then in March we go on a European tour for a month. We'll be home for the holidays and then we're going back to England. In mid-April we're going to Germany for a month in the studio and we hope to record the album by mid-May. And then the festival season, the album release and everything that follows.
Bojan: Then soon Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (laughs).

I love deconstructing 'lifestyle' articles like these, they are such a gold mine of biases and narrative formation by the chattering classes. Here we have a wonderful premise:
Now, Ms. Margo is living a dream of many American women who are seeking relationships abroad, some of whom cite the toxic dating scene in the United States
Well, no objection from me that the US has toxic dating norms. But, hm, idk, 'many women' - is this a true trend amoung the American Female? Lets see who this article features:
Ms. Margo fell in love with the city (and its men). She found a gig teaching English in Paris and moved there after she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in May 2019.
Okay, not *that* crazy but I do think I know what kind of Sarah Lawrence grad gap years in Paris before her law degree;
For Cindy Sheahan...At the end of 2017, she quit her job and traveled throughout Southeast Asia for leisure, and she started using Tinder.
That isn't...most people can't list as their full time job "Dating in Thailand";
For Frantzces Lys...she started a podcast called “Chronicles Abroad” with her co-host, who had met Ms. Williams, 40, in Malaysia. In 2018, Ms. Lys interviewed Ms. Williams, the founder of a consultancy, and the two kept in touch. They started dating years later.
Oh yeah the extremely relatable situation of a podcast host and boutique consultancy founder travelling to Mayalsia!!
“When you decide to just live your life for yourself, you actually end up stumbling upon people that match your energy and the same ideals and values,” said Ms. Lys, a 42-year-old founder of a wellness company.
Oh a wellness company, who hasn't founded one of those!!! And a link to their company, wow thanks NYT, that was definitely gonna be my follow-up for Ms. Lys:
Cepee Tabibian, who moved to Madrid at 35 from Austin, Texas, felt similarly.
Okay that could be normal, what do she d-
In 2020, she met her partner, who is Spanish. Now, she is the founder of She Hit Refresh, a community that helps women over the age of 30 move to a different country.
Jesus fucking Christ none of these people are real. They are full-hog in the industry of packaging and selling their Life of Insight & Discovery for $500 an hour over zoom sessions to non profits hosting leadership seminars, their dating isn't dating its brand management. I don't doubt they authentically love their life but this, shockingly, is not a trend, is not a sample, is not ethnographic data, this is an ad buy by a sliver of globe-trotting wealthy woman masquerading as journalism.
Absolutely the only relatable person is:
Alexis Brown, for example, noticed a lack of “effort and intention” from the men she was dating in Atlanta, where she attended Spelman College.
When she traveled across Europe for vacation from October 2022 to January 2023, however, the people she dated made it clear that they wanted to spend time with her.
Who takes way more words than is necessary to tell me she had a polycule stretching from Paris to Prague during her study abroad, which, good for her, that is what study abroad is for. Shockingly, this is not a new development in the collegiate experience!
Buried amoung the branded bullshit is Alexis's real gem and the only true 'thesis' of the article:
“The dating culture in the U.S. is that it’s cool and normalized to be indifferent to someone and not really express how you genuinely feel,” Ms. Brown, 23, said.
Which is essentially that in Europe people will "express emotion" unlike the cold, busy America. I don't doubt this, but I would hope a writer at the NYT's could have slightly more social awareness; the 'reason' Americans do not "express emotion" is that if they did you would dump them right on their ass on the first date.
Someone telling you, to quote Ms Margo:
“This one guy was like, ‘I ran through traffic just to look into your eyes once, and if you don’t want to go on a date with me, I can die happy knowing that I just met you,’” said Ms. Margo, a 28-year-old English teacher from Los Angeles.
As an opening line is cringe and uncomfortable, because they do not know you. They are lying and you know they are lying, it is a horrible foundation for a long term relationship. American dating norms have been hammering this lesson home on every participant (but if we are being honest, its primarily women hammering this home on men) and it is probably right to do. Anyone who does this lacks credibility.
But when you are in ~*Paris*~, you don't care about their credibility, because you lack it yourself. You are on vacation, you have no future, just a sequential present. If the guy who tells you your eyes are his world turns out to be a clingy failson who requires at least a blowjob a day to keep his mood stable, you can just *get up and leave the country*, you cannot be trapped because nothing is keeping you there. By placing an ocean between yourself and your social standing you can radically change your standards.
And you know what, there is something to that! Maybe the 18-point-checklist you mentally process every Tinder swipe through as you plan out your dream wedding on Cape Cod to a status-swollen ghost in a Tom Ford speckle-gray blazer while on lunch break from your quant analysis job at a digital marketing start-up in Chelsea isn't the best baggage to bring into a first date! Through radically shifting your social context it might be possible to jar your brain out of what is holding it back. Its not what you found in Paris, but what you left behind in America, that could actually make a difference... and that reality could give this article some heft.
But then say that instead of trying to sell me on the idea that:
For Ms. Margo, a Black woman who attended predominantly white institutions throughout her school years, she felt ignored in the United States, as if she “was not an option,” she said. In Paris she felt seen.
France is less racist than the campus of Sarah Fucking Lawrence against black people. No wonder the humanities are dying if they are teaching this level of self awareness.

Today in Christian History
Tumblr media
Today is Friday, February 23rd, 2024. It is the 54th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar; Because it is a leap year, 312 days remain until the end of the year.
1680: Death of Thomas Goodwin (pictured above), a notable English Congregational Nonconformist preacher. He had been a member of the Westminster Assembly of 1650, and author of many biblical and theological works. His last words were: “Ah, is this dying? How I have dreaded as an enemy this smiling friend.”
1719: Death in Tranquebar, India, of thirty-six-year-old Bartholomew Ziegenbalg, missionary to India, who has established a seminary, translated the New Testament into Tamil, converted and baptized over two hundred Indians, and constructed a church building. At one point he had been imprisoned by the Dutch who feared his preaching would antagonize the Hindus they administered.
1758: Jonathan Edwards receives a smallpox vaccination from which he contracts the disease. He will die in March.
1819: A new church at Friedensthal on St. Croix Island is consecrated to the worship of the living God by Moravians and their converts. The congregation is so numerous not a third part can get inside the doors.
1846: Following the outrage raised by his publication of “Remarks on Certain Passages in the Thirty-Nine Articles,” in which he has tried to reconcile Church of England teaching with Roman positions, and his migration to the Roman Catholic church, John Henry Newman leaves Oxford for good.
1855: John Bright, a Quaker-born Christian parliamentarian in England, makes an eloquent speech against the Crimean War. Its most famous line is, the “Angel of Death has Been Abroad.”
1918: The body of the Orthodox priest George Porgachevsky is found about a mile and a quarter from the village of Ivanovskoye, Amur region. His head is crushed and he has two bayonet wounds in his stomach. The Soviets had arrested him thirteen days earlier.
1925: Death in Alexandria, Virginia, of Kate Waller Barrett, an American physician, who, as a single mother and member of the Episcopal Church, co-founded the National Florence Crittenton Mission financed by wealthy Charles Nelson Crittenton. She had secured for the mission the first-ever federal charter for a charitable organization.
1929: Lindel Tsen is consecrated as Assistant Bishop of Honan, the first Chinese bishop in an established Anglican diocese. He will become the principal leader of Chinese Anglicanism in the mid-20th century and suffer persecution at the hands of the government.
1934: Death in Baltimore, Maryland, of Peter Ainslie, a Disciples of Christ minister, ecumenical leader, and author of The Scandal of Christianity, a sharp rebuke of divisions among Christians.
1951: Death of Zhang Boling (Chang Po-ling), a prominent Chinese Protestant layman and educator. He had been affiliated with the YMCA, founded Nankai University, accepted women for education, and promoted athletic activities. Because of the school’s patriotism the Japanese had bombed and burned it and succeeding political changes made him unwelcome.

The Classics mailing list is having another ‘how many languages should People know?’ discussion. (And it is actually a discussion this time! Not to jinx it But it has so far not descended into Oxbridge professors telling postgrad students that if they haven’t spent a year living abroad in specific European countries then they shouldn’t even be doing Classics).
And like, I’m never gonna contribute to that discussion on the mailing list because there is always the chance that you’ll set someone off and I genuinely cba to deal with that, but the discussion so far is missing actual practical solutions of any sort.
Here are some facts:
- Classics scholarship gets published in a lot of languages. It is absolutely the case that the majority of it is in a smaller group of languages.
- it would be super awesome and great if everyone was multilingual!
- Most scholars are not multilingual.
- difference circumstances make it more/less likely that someone will be fluent in a second language. This includes Country, school, class, etc.
- there is literally nothing to be gained from excluding people from the subject for not knowing more than one language.
- everyone would produce better scholarship if we could read everything written on the topic we’re researching.
- there are a not insignificant amount of instances in which something was published in a language other than English and then someone else comes along later and writes the same thing again but in English and it gets all the attention (and honestly leaves you wondering whether the author deliberately chose to ignore the non-English work bc srsly how do you write an entire fucking book and not be aware of someone else’s whole entire book on the same theme??)
- non-native English speakers are more likely to get papers rejected from English speaking journals.
- it is absolutely not reasonable to expect them to be spending so much of their time perfecting their knowledge of the foibles of English academic language.
- searching for Research is a skill. Knowing what terms to use and where to search is a skill. Knowing another language doesn’t actually mean you will be good at searching using that language.
- DeepL and even google translate are pretty good actually.
Here’s some thoughts:
Publishing: I’m currently co-editing a volume and I spent a lot of time working with one contributor bc it’s the first thing they’ve published in English. They’ve been a delight to work with. And honestly, yes, it has taken me more time to help them polish their chapter than for others, but it’s not even the chapter that’s taken the longest. Like, one of the chapters written by a native English speaker has been a way bigger headache for me.
I know everyone is overworked and underpaid and being asked to Peer Review Journal/Book submissions for free in their spare time, but also, some of us are very much happy to help others polish journal articles/chapters for free too. I’d rather do that than peer review shit, tbh.
Sure, in an ideal world we’d get paid for all this kind of work, but we do not live in an ideal world, other scholars can’t afford to pay us to do that and frankly, like, they shouldn’t have to be literally paying more money than others to stand a chance of getting published just because they’re having to write in a second/third/etc. language. Ideally universities or other bodies could fund that cost but whatever. No one is putting me in charge of a university budget anytime soon, so I’ll just be here helping people for free if they need it.
Language learning: I don’t care about what the ideal situation is. I care about what we can actually, usefully do. Sitting around complaining that universities should make x or y language mandatory is useless. And there will always be more languages that it would be useful to know.
What’s actually useful, and far easier to implement:
- teach people how to use DeepL and google translate. Get universities to *subscribe* to DeepL. Teach this as part of standard research methods. Make it clear even from undergrad that there is valuable scholarship available in other languages and that students are expected to Not Ignore It.
- resource share. What’s actually the best place to search for academic research on Y topic in X language? And what’s the word for X person/art style/literary genre in Y language? Even if someone wants to look at lit in different languages, they still have to know what to look for before they start.
- ??? Idk what to call this, but like, it would be really fuckin’ great if we could tag stuff in multiple languages. Like, it would be better if a user could search for, say ‘Iliad animal metaphors’ and have it turn up all Language results rather than having to run 10 different searches to cover a bunch of different languages (also see above, re: knowing how to successfully search is a language-specific skill). But without knowing how to fix that problem, we should still be sharing the knowledge of how to use translation tools + the best search engines per Language / area + reminding people ‘that ‘look up that term in X language dictionary and then search for that’ is something they should be doing.
Like, there are already tools at our disposal that should make cross-language scholarship easier for everyone. Whether you know one or five languages. We’re just shit at using them/teaching them.

Top 5 Challenges Faced by International Students and How Universities Can Address Them
International students play a vital role in shaping the global academic landscape, bringing cultural diversity, fresh perspectives, and a global outlook to universities worldwide. However, studying abroad is often a daunting journey, filled with unique challenges that can affect their academic success and overall well-being. To attract and retain international students, universities must recognize these challenges and implement targeted support systems to help them thrive.
This article explores the top five challenges faced by international students and offers actionable strategies for how universities can address them, ensuring a more supportive and inclusive environment for these students.
1. Cultural Adjustment: Navigating a New Environment
One of the most significant challenges international students face is adapting to a new culture. From differences in communication styles and social norms to unfamiliar academic environments, cultural adjustment can be overwhelming.
Key challenges include:
Language barriers that make it difficult to communicate effectively with professors, peers, or local communities.
Different teaching methods and learning styles that may contrast with what students are used to in their home countries.
Social integration as international students may find it challenging to connect with domestic students and form friendships due to cultural differences.
How universities can help:
Cultural orientation programs: Organizing pre-arrival orientation sessions that cover cultural differences, social expectations, and academic practices can help students adjust more smoothly. Topics like communication etiquette, classroom expectations, and social customs should be covered.
Language support services: Offering English language workshops or tutoring services can help international students improve their communication skills and build confidence in academic and social settings.
Cultural exchange events: Hosting events like international festivals, food fairs, or cross-cultural workshops helps foster interaction between domestic and international students, creating opportunities for social integration.
By providing cultural orientation and support, universities can help international students feel more comfortable in their new environment and reduce culture shock.
2. Academic Pressure and Expectations
For many international students, studying abroad represents a significant academic investment, both financially and personally. The pressure to excel can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout, particularly when students are adapting to new teaching styles, grading systems, and academic expectations.
Key challenges include:
High academic expectations from both themselves and their families, often linked to securing scholarships or future career opportunities.
Adapting to different grading systems and evaluation methods, which may differ from what students are accustomed to in their home countries.
Language barriers that can make understanding course material or contributing in class discussions more difficult.
How universities can help:
Academic support services: Offering tutoring, writing centers, and academic counseling services can help international students navigate the academic challenges they face. Universities should provide specialized support for students struggling with language-related academic challenges.
Mentorship programs: Pairing international students with academic mentors—such as faculty members, alumni, or senior students—can provide guidance on how to succeed academically and manage workload expectations.
Flexible grading and assessment options: Providing clear information about the grading system and allowing for flexibility in assessments (such as additional time for assignments) can help reduce academic pressure for students still adjusting to a new educational system.
By addressing the academic pressures faced by international students, universities can create a supportive learning environment that encourages success without overwhelming stress.
3. Financial Challenges: Balancing Costs and Opportunities
Affordability is a significant concern for many international students. The cost of tuition, living expenses, and unexpected costs can create financial strain, particularly for students who come from lower-income countries or rely on scholarships to fund their education.
Key financial challenges include:
High tuition fees and living expenses, particularly in countries with strong currencies like the U.S., UK, or Australia.
Limited access to scholarships or financial aid, as international students may not qualify for the same level of support as domestic students.
Restrictions on working hours due to visa regulations, limiting students’ ability to work part-time and earn extra income while studying.
How universities can help:
Increase scholarships and financial aid: Offering more merit-based and need-based scholarships for international students can make higher education more accessible. Universities can also create country-specific scholarships to support students from underrepresented regions.
Provide financial literacy resources: Offering workshops or resources on budgeting, managing living expenses, and applying for financial aid can empower students to manage their finances more effectively while studying abroad.
On-campus job opportunities: Where visa restrictions allow, universities can offer on-campus jobs tailored to international students, such as positions in student services, tutoring, or research assistant roles. This gives students the chance to earn money while gaining valuable work experience.
By addressing financial challenges, universities can alleviate some of the stress associated with studying abroad and make higher education more accessible to talented students from around the world.
4. Visa and Immigration Hurdles
Navigating visa and immigration regulations can be one of the most complex and stressful aspects of studying abroad. International students often face uncertainty about visa applications, renewals, work permits, and post-study work opportunities.
Key challenges include:
Complicated visa application processes that require extensive documentation, interviews, and approvals, which can delay the start of studies.
Visa restrictions on work that limit students’ ability to take up part-time jobs or internships, affecting their financial situation and work experience.
Uncertainty about post-graduation visas, especially for students who want to stay in the country to gain work experience after completing their degree.
How universities can help:
Visa and immigration support services: Establish dedicated visa offices or partnerships with immigration experts who can guide students through the application and renewal processes, provide accurate advice, and troubleshoot any visa-related issues.
Workshops and webinars on visa regulations: Offering informational sessions about visa requirements, work permits, and post-study work opportunities can help international students stay informed and avoid common pitfalls.
Post-study visa support: Universities can provide guidance on post-graduation visa options, such as work visas or entrepreneur visas, giving students clear pathways for staying in the country after they finish their degree.
By offering comprehensive visa and immigration support, universities can reduce stress for international students and help them navigate the complex legal landscape with confidence.
5. Mental Health and Well-Being
The combination of cultural adjustment, academic pressures, and financial concerns can take a toll on the mental health and well-being of international students. Being far from family and friends adds to the emotional strain, making it crucial for universities to offer mental health support that is sensitive to the unique challenges faced by international students.
Key mental health challenges include:
Feelings of isolation or homesickness, as international students may struggle to build new social networks and cope with being away from their support systems.
Mental health stigma in certain cultures, where discussing mental health openly may not be encouraged, preventing students from seeking help.
Increased stress and anxiety related to academics, financial pressures, and uncertainty about the future.
How universities can help:
Culturally sensitive counseling services: Offering mental health support that takes into account the cultural backgrounds and values of international students can make them feel more comfortable seeking help. Multilingual counseling services can also reduce language barriers.
Peer support groups: Creating peer-led support groups where international students can connect with others facing similar challenges can reduce feelings of isolation and offer emotional support in a safe, non-judgmental space.
Promote mental health awareness: Universities can actively promote mental health awareness through campaigns, workshops, and events that encourage students to prioritize their well-being and seek help when needed.
By addressing mental health and well-being proactively, universities can create a nurturing environment that helps international students thrive both academically and personally.
Conclusion
International students contribute immensely to the diversity, innovation, and global outlook of universities around the world. However, to ensure their success, universities must recognize and address the unique challenges they face. By providing robust cultural, academic, financial, and mental health support, institutions can create an environment where international students feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to succeed.
For universities seeking to boost international enrollment and retention, investing in comprehensive support systems is not just a strategic move—it’s a necessity.

Can I use my standard first aid certification internationally after recertification?
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In an increasingly interconnected world, knowing whether your Standard First Aid certification is valid internationally can be critical. This guide explores the global applicability of such certifications, focusing on requirements, advantages, and practical insights into recertification. Whether you're a traveler, expatriate, or professional working across borders, this article ensures you're informed and prepared to provide aid wherever needed.
Understanding Standard First Aid Certification
Standard First Aid certification equips individuals with vital knowledge and skills to respond to emergencies such as injuries, medical conditions, and accidents. However, its validity and recognition can vary across countries due to different regulatory frameworks.
Key Features of Standard First Aid:
CPR Techniques: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for heart-related emergencies.
Basic Life Support (BLS): Essential for life-threatening conditions.
Wound Management: Techniques to address cuts, burns, and abrasions.
While these skills are universal, compliance with local laws ensures your training is legally recognized.
International Recognition of Certifications 🌐
Does Your Certification Work Everywhere?
Most Standard First Aid certifications, such as those issued by Red Cross or St. John Ambulance, are widely recognized internationally. However, acceptance often depends on:
Certification Body: Renowned organizations have greater global acceptance.
Compliance Standards: Certifications aligned with global frameworks (like the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation - ILCOR) are more portable.
Local Laws: Some countries require region-specific certifications or supplemental training.
Recertification Matters
Keeping your certification updated through recertification demonstrates commitment to current practices and regulations. Most certifications need renewal every 2–3 years, ensuring proficiency with updated protocols.
Steps to Ensure International Validity
1. Verify Reciprocity Agreements
Some countries have agreements that recognize each other's certifications. Check with relevant authorities.
2. Understand Host Country Requirements
Research local requirements and laws to avoid penalties or invalidation of your certification.
3. Supplement Your Certification
Obtain add-on training for region-specific emergencies, such as:
Snakebite management in tropical regions.
Altitude sickness response for mountainous areas.
4. Carry Documentation
Always have your certification card or a digital copy readily available. Some regions might request proof of training during emergencies.
Advantages of International First Aid Certification
Enhanced Employability: In fields like healthcare, teaching, or travel, possessing an internationally recognized certification boosts job prospects.
Increased Confidence: A certified individual can respond effectively in emergencies abroad.
Compliance with Regulations: Avoid legal challenges by adhering to local health and safety laws.
Limitations to Consider
While the benefits are immense, consider these challenges:
Language Barriers: Certifications are often in English; some countries may require local language translation.
Additional Costs: Recertification or supplementary training might involve extra expenses.
Regional Variations: Some practices might differ; adapting to these nuances is vital.
FAQs
1. Do I need additional training for remote areas?
Yes. Specific regions may require knowledge of unique emergencies, such as hypothermia care in Arctic areas or tropical disease management in equatorial countries.
2. How often should I recertify for international use?
Recertification timelines depend on the issuing body but typically range between 2–3 years. Staying current with recertification ensures international relevance.
3. Are online certifications acceptable internationally?
Many online certifications are recognized globally if provided by accredited institutions like Red Cross. However, some countries prioritize hands-on training.
4. Can I work professionally abroad with this certification?
Yes, but some jobs may require additional qualifications or proof of compliance with local standards.
5. What should I do if my certification isn’t recognized in a country?
Check for conversion programs or local supplemental courses to bridge gaps in recognition.
Conclusion:
Your Standard First Aid certification can be a valuable tool for saving lives internationally. However, its recognition depends on the issuing body, local laws, and whether you stay current through recertification. By understanding these factors, you can ensure you're prepared and compliant wherever you go.
