Happy Friday Lovelies! I realize this recap is for weds and thursday but I'm gonna roll with it! I hope the rest of the week was kinder to you than the previous parts of the week. Please know we're thinking of you crew, it's okay if you're keeping low on the radar of fandom at the moment. It's also great if you're out honking your nose off! Whatever you're doing is what you need to do, and don't let anyone tell you any different. I know sometimes it seems like things just keep getting worse, lovelies, the world is a chaotic place, and it's okay to sit with your feelings and feel that. Just remember you're loved and it can and will get better one day. There will always be high points and low points in this life, that's just how it goes, but how you cope with those points changes for the better each and every time they pass. Remember you are wonderful, and you are strong, and you're gonna get through whatever you're dealing with, okay? Sending love and hugs, and all the good vibes into your weekend <3

Happy Taranaki Anniversary Day!
Taranaki Anniversary Day is a provincial holiday observed in New Zealand and if you’re lucky to live in this beautiful region, you’re getting a day off work! Super sunny today so what more could you want 🙂 This day commemorates the creation of the Taranaki province. Originally called New Plymouth province, it was renamed to Taranaki in 1859 after the tribal group to the west of Mount Egmont…

Rongo-mā-Tāne or Rongo-marae-roa is the Maori God (Atua) of Cultivation, dealing specifically with Kumara (sweet potato) one of the most important foods of Maori culture. Taro, gourds, yams and other root-like vegetables were also cultivated in Maori culture. Rongo also held domain over war, and the peace that comes after. In war tribes, operated under Tumatauenga (meaning war) and ended their conflict under Rongo (meaning peace) or Maunga-a-Rongo. Other words include Ho-Hou-te-Rongo (peace negotiations) and Rongo-taketake (lasting peace).

🍑 (x32) Wow, what an epic event! Thanks to @positivelybare for a tau kē out-of-body (or should that be out-of-clothing) diverse body positive experience. ⁣That’s me at the end, far right!
🍑 ⁣
It was great to be amongst a whole lotta skin confident brave peeps willing to bare all at sunset despite the persistent buffeting cold wind through the shoot.⁣
🍑 ⁣
The energy, exactly like when I participated in the Spencer Tunick Bondi Beach shoot, was electric. When you’re finally given the go ahead to strip everyone knows it’s the point of no return. It’s all in! We’re all suddenly encountering each other on a level playing field and willing to share our raw vulnerability. ⁣
🍑 ⁣
The laughter, cheering and joking spirit peeps brought along with the out loud shouts of encouraging words like “tropical! hot! warm! sunny! balmy!” really helped distract from our numb toes and fingers!⁣
🍑 ⁣
The moments between photos where we all scrambled back to our spots to dive back into our puffer jackets, sleeping bag or furry blankets for temporary warmth were gold. Then we did it all over again and again. No one looks glamorous barefooting it across uneven rocky outcrops but we didn’t care!⁣
🍑 ⁣
Big ups to all those that participated. Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei. Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain. This whakataukī is about aiming high for what is truly valuable, but its real message is to be persistent and to not let obstacles stop you from reaching your goal. Events like this and the good work that groups like @getnakedaustralia do help battle those negative voices inside and out that can make loving ourselves challenging. Well, that’s certainly the case for me! Ngā mihi Brendan, Lauren and Michael. ⁣

As opposed to the previous poster, i tried to use as much space as i could. While reading the maori proverb "whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei", there were some words i felt held so much value and should be arranged in a way that showed their value. "Seek" starts off the proverb therefore i emphasised its presence through colouring it a nice blue and included pupils in both the 'e's'. To enforce it further, i thought it an interesting idea to position eyes crafted out of eclipses around the poster. There was a part of the translation that caught my attention and it was "let it be a lofty mountain". Therefore i attempted to bring the mountain to life by drawing lines and then typing on those lines, placing the text in different angles of the mountain. I then typed mountain at the very bottom of the poster and coloured it green. However, this poster may appear a bit messy and chaotic due to the limited space. The overall balance of the poster seems a little off as a result of the different sized text and how the imagery affects their size.

Ok on the one hand I'm glad this te reo Māori class is acknowledging that it's not appropriate for Pākehā to claim maunga, awa, and other landmarks as "theirs" and do a Māori-style pepeha... But instead it's got a YouTube video of a wahine Pākehā saying everyone's indigenous to somewhere and that European settlers are indigenous to Europe and just ;_;

An ancient prophecy foretold the appearance of ‘two birds of knowledge’ over the peak of Taranaki. These ‘two birds’, Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi established the pacifist community of Parihaka, on the foothills of Mount Taranaki, which offered hope and refugee for Māori who suffered land confiscations in the 1860s. They led their people in a peaceful resistance against the Crown’s denial of Māori sovereign rights and settler immigrants’ encroachment on Māori land.
Night is falling in Resurrection of Te Whiti Over Taranaki, 1975–77. Mount Taranaki, the symbol of the Taranaki people’s mana (power) remains steadfast. Master orator Te Whiti, holds the raukura, three albatross feathers, symbolic of peace and goodwill that he preaches.
As both a journalist and artist, Selwyn Muru has focused on communicating Māori perspectives of history, contemporary life and ongoing injustices. These two paintings are part of a suite of 37 paintings that Selwyn produced after visiting Parihaka during the 1975 Māori artists and writers hui in Waitara. At the time of their exhibition in 1979, Muru expressed his hope that his work could assist in reconciling conflicts between Māori and Pākehā through the promotion of dialogue: ‘The marae is a great leveller. Hopefully the gallery will be one too.'

The extraordinary exhibition of Selwyn Ruru’s works (Ruru for short). At Mt Cecilia Park Pah homestead gallery in Hillsborough.
Explores elements of ranginui and papatūānuku (sky father and earth mother respectively), of Māori justice and cultural markers that were damaged due to violent acts of colonisation, brutality and injustice. The glossary given was a beautiful summation of key elements within different works, translated in a simplified version in English.
Tumblr media
My works look at themes of rongo wairua (or the spirit of peace). Using Māori language in art practice is a way to decolonize work from the limitations that English language places on work that concerns itself with the whenua (land) of Aotearoa. My work is made in Tamaki Makaurau and therefore should respect the language of this place especially in regards to spiritual processes.
Works of mention in Ruru’s practice:
This body of work includes a number of different mediums, each a testament to the breadth of his legacy as an orator, activist, visual artist, broadcaster, playwright, musician and actor (amongst other things!). In perusing the collection, I was struck by the versatility of our Māori artists – particularly in light of Muru and his contemporaries. Amongst this generation, so many actions exist that have shaped the social landscape we find ourselves both witnessing and, in our own contemporary context, navigating now. Highlights include the paintings Half-caste Ruru (2002) and Maunga Piko (1999), which are an honouring of the role that kaitiaki play in our lives, and the whakapapa that connects us to our whenua. I was also particularly taken by the Untitled Figures (circa 1985), having spent a significant portion of time letting my eyes follow the lines as they mimic the shapes of traditional whakairo patterns.

Week 4- Artist Model- Ngahuia Harrison
E rere kau mai te awa nui mai te Kahui Maunga ki Tangaroa
Tumblr media
This image caught my eye immediately as I was shown this exact image last year for my high school portfolio. This image was taken just down the road from where I live in Whangarei, which makes me have a connection to this sequence of photos.
I love how even though the 3 different photos are taken at separate angles, however, all focusing on the 'rock covered conveyor belt' . Making it a continuing photograph in some sections but being separated in the rest.
This is an image from my high school portfolio however this was my inspiration taken from Ngahuia Harrison's E rere kau mai te awa nui mai te Kahui Maunga ki Tangaroa (extremely blurry photo as i don't have a digital copy)
Tumblr media
Coastal Cannibals
Tumblr media
This image caught my attention as it's something you don't typically see,
The mountain in the background is Mt Manaia, which is also located in Whangarei. Something that makes this photo so different from the rest is that it captures the beauty of Mt Manaia from a different angle and captures it through another object, through the windows which I find quite interesting.
Tauranga Waka, 2021 (From the Coastal Cannibals series)
Tumblr media
This photo was taken at Marsden Point, which is also a familiar area to me.
The image appears to be unedited but just the afternoon sun, with the golden hour, creating a saturation effect.
Theres something about this image that is so crisp and clear, with no people or boats in the image, making it crisp and calm.

Wk 12, 25th of April, 2024 Research
In Aotearoa, Papatūānuku is the feminine earth
From the text: "Ko wai ahau? Papatūānuku and I" on The Pantograph Punch, 2017…
"Whenua in Aotearoa is feminine and her name is Papatūānuku. She exists in almost every culture and manifests under several pseudonyms. In Bolivia, she is ratified and protected by the constitution. The notion of land as feminine has persisted relentlessly throughout history, hand in hand with a colonial desire to claim and subjugate her. As a child, I saw the sinuous curves, danger and beauty of the whenua as evidence of a living, breathing wāhine.
Her waist, the crevices and valleys between her hips and bosom, were cinched by years of erosion. The flowering and prospering native fauna and flora spoke to her investment in tikanga; the protection of this taonga ensured her health, sustainable growth and fertility. Her diverse environments co-exist; the dehydrated plains of central Otākou, the salty West coast wind, the glare of the Ahipara sun; were all telling of her fragmented self.
Her legs the length of the Waikato River. To speak her name, Papatūānuku, was to taste sea-spray, ochre soil and the shade of a kauri." - Miriama Aoake (Ngaati Maahuta, Ngāti Hinerangi, Waikato-Tainui): writer, critic and postgraduate student in Māori Studies.
I think it would be disrespectful if my research on the landscape, flowers and fruits in Aotearoa and what is observable in Tāmaki Kakaurua, didn't acknowledgement Māori sciences and tikanga. I am researching these thinkers and writers in order to fill in any gaps.
From the text: "Ko Taupiri te Maunga, Ko Waikato te Awa, Ko Pōtatau te Tangata" Taupiri is the Mountain, Waikato is the River, Pōtatau is the Man…
"Colonial desecration is defined by the erasure of Te Ao Māori, and the establishment of invasive, foreign boundaries that must fall. Māori understanding of Papatūānuku as a living body comes with an understanding of kaitiakitanga, that she exists alongside Māori, personified in the geographic terrain of Aotearoa. To apply Marama Muru-Lanning’s assertions of landmarks as a living being, “[rivers] were just part of the way we lived, not something to be controlled or owned” by Muru-Lanning, Marama. ‘The Analogous Boundaries of Ngaati Mahuta, Waikato-Tainui and Kiingitanga. University of Auckland. Pages 9 - 41.
Papatūānuku, against her will, became subject to settler reconstruction. Lisa Taouma purports European interest in the Pacific and her bountiful land is synonymous with the construction of the dusky maiden stereotype, “naive, untouched and passively inviting of Western penetration.” Papa’s autonomy was stolen from her, defiled, devalued and defaced. She was forcibly fragmented by irreversible colonial boundaries, becoming an unwilling subject of the Crown. The domineering Pākehā hegemony dissolves the importance of the Māori world view within the self to promote a monocultural agenda. Colonial methodology evaporates the visibility of tikanga; manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, kotahitanga, rangatiratanga, mohiotanga, maramatanga, tuakana, kaitiakitanga, atuatanga, wairua and mauri. Resistance is the less desirable, more difficult path to restore the principles of tikanga to reclaim the whenua/body." From ‘Ko wai ahau? Who am I?’." -Miriama Aoake access here: https://www.pantograph-punch.com/posts/papatuanuku-and-i
From the text: Saana Murray — and an awakening for a Pākehā by Kennedy Warne, 2016, E-tangata…
Kennedy Warne, a co-founder and former editor of New Zealand Geographic and the author of Tūhoe: Portrait of a Nation, on how the cultural sleep was rubbed from his eyes.
"It was 1989. New Zealand Geographic, the magazine I co-founded and edited with the publisher, John Woods, was less than a year old. One of our photographers, Arno Gasteiger, had produced a set of evocative images of the Spirits Bay — Cape Reinga area, and I was keen to publish them but didn't have any text to go with the photos. A friend suggested Saana Murray, a poet, an elder of Ngāti Kuri, the tribe of that place, and a keeper of the long-burning fires of her people. I asked how soon she could deliver the text. What she told me I have never forgotten. “I cannot write anything here,” she said. “I will have to go to the land". She said it as if she were stating the obvious. Yet it was the first time I had heard such a thing: that words about the land required the presence of the land. That knowledge was inseparable from its context. For someone steeped in scientific thinking — a mindset in which knowledge is a commodity, endlessly transferable — it was a challenging thought. For a moment, the fabric of my fact-based worldview started to fray, and I caught a glimpse of another country. I‘ve come to learn that this is the country Māori inhabit. In the Māori worldview, context is vital. Knowledge is not disembodied information but part of a living matrix of encounters and relationships, past and present, natural and spiritual. Tūhoe take this sort of experience in their stride, incorporating it into a life narrative that interweaves many ways of knowing. And, really, this is what Saana Murray showed me all those years ago, when she said she had to go to the place where the knowledge belongs." -Kennedy Warne.

From the text: Becoming ‘really Pākehā’ by Jen Margaret, 2019…
"The Pākehā nation is an unruly beast. Reflecting on the state of the Pākehā nation is therefore a daunting task that has made me query what the Pākehā nation is, as well as what it might be.
I employ the common usage of Pākehā, which describes the diverse group of people who are white European, particularly of British descent. Our stories prior to arrival in Aotearoa are varied, as are our experiences since arrival. What we have in common is our privilege as beneficiaries of colonisation.
Ani Mikaere (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Porou), a barrister and solicitor and teaches Māori law and philosophy, said:
There is nowhere else in the world that one can be Pākehā. Whether the term remains forever linked to the shameful role of the oppressor or whether it can become a positive source of identity and pride is up to Pākehā themselves. All that is required from them is a leap of faith.
Problematic theories of the inherent superiority of white folk (like the Great Chain of Being), which many Pākehā disavow while holding firmly to patterns of thought which the theories have planted. While often articulated in more subtle ways than in the past, cultural racism — the innate belief that cultures have certain attributes that make some superior to others — is flourishing in Pākehā society.
Within the article, Rebecca Solnit attests that being dominant “means seeing yourself and not seeing others” and how, in this way, privilege limits and obstructs imagination. Winning the colonisation race — the race of cultural dominance — has generated huge imbalance and loss. Māori have been the most devastated, yet Pākehā too have been damaged.
We should teach our colonial history, because we don’t, and this is a huge mistake. You cannot know who you are as a society unless you know your history. Look out across the world and see the extraordinary divisions within societies. Frankly, the rise of white racism is partly because people don’t understand their history. (Jim Bolger)
Pākehā ignorance is coupled with British ways of operating that don’t fit here on Māori land. Re-centring indigenous ideologies is a core dimension of decolonisation.
In the face of climate change and growing inequity, decolonisation is critical to the survival and health not only of indigenous peoples but of us all. "The task of calling things by their true names, of telling the truth to the best of our abilities, of knowing how we got here, of listening particularly to those who have been silenced in the past". (Rebecca Solnit)
