1. — The Darkest Minds [2012]

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

But when the truth about Ruby’s abilities—the truth she’s kept hidden from everyone, even the camp authorities—comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. On the run, she joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp: Zu, a young girl haunted by her past; Chubs, a standoffish brainiac; and Liam, their fearless leader who is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

While they journey to find the one safe haven left for kids like them—East River—they just evade their determined pursuers, including an organization that will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. But as they get close to grasping the things they’ve dreamed of, Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

1.5 — In Time [2013]

Gabe’s life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skiptracer. This already almost impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first score, a young girl who won’t speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

1.6 — Liam’s Story [2018]

This is a short story told from Liam’s POV and it takes place after the end of book 1.

2 — Never Fade [2013]

Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. 2.5 — Sparks Rise [2014]

Sam didn’t think things could get worse at Thurmond rehabilitation camp. Then the Red’s arrive. Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of light in Sam’s dark childhood. Lucas has a deadly secret—he beat the brutal training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment, Lucas must risk his everything to save her.

3 — In The Afterlight [2014]

Ruby can’t look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government’s attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. With them is a prisoner: Clancy Gray, son of the president, and one of the few people Ruby has encountered with abilities like hers. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds.

They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America’s children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the “rehabilitation camps” housing thousands of other Psi kids.

Meanwhile, reunited with Liam, the boy she would—and did—sacrifice everything for to keep alive, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. She turns to Cole, his older brother, to provide the intense training she knows she will need to take down Gray and the government. But Cole has demons of his own, and one fatal mistake may be the spark that sets the world on fire.

3.5 — Beyond The Night [2018]

The government-run “rehabilitation camps” have been shut down, but kids with Psi powers are anything but free. Sam would rather be on her own than put in the care of a foster family and given the ‘cure’—a dangerous procedure that unclaimed kids across the country are being forced to undergo. But there’s more at stake than just her own safety. Same once made someone a promise and the time has come to fulfill it.

Now that she’s out of her camp, Mia only has one thought in her head: finding Lucas, her beloved older brother.

4 — The Darkest Legacy [2018]

Five years after the destruction of the so-called rehabilitation camps that imprisoned her and countless other Psi kids, seventeen-year-old Suzume “Zu” Kimura has assumed the role of spokesperson for the interim government, fighting for the rights of Psi kids against a growing tide of misinformation and prejudice. But when she is accused of committing a horrifying act, she is forced to go on the run once more in order to stay alive.

Determined to clear her name, Zu finds herself in an uncomfortable alliance with Roman and Priyanka, two mysterious Psi who could either help her prove her innocence or betray her before she gets the chance. But as they travel in search of safety and answers, and Zu grows closer to the people she knows she shouldn’t trust, they uncover even darker things roiling beneath the veneer of the country’s recovery. With her future—and the future of all Psi—on the line, Zu must use her powerful voice to fight back against forces that seek to drive the Psi into the shadows and save the friends who were once her protectors.

Father figures (well would you look at that another sad post, go me)

Do you ever think about how Ruby and Zu both got comfortable around a father figure in there lives(Gabe and Ruby's father- Jacob), and both men were happy to be looking after a young child that clearly has been through a lot and needs emotional support but they aren't sure how to do that so they provide physical support. like putting on the wizard of Oz and calming down mothers when she gets nervous at the end of ITA.

Do you ever think about how both men took a bullet for their daughters because they cared that much about wanting their kid to liv. One of them died not knowing if she'd be safe and only caring about her, hoping she 'gets to Kansas'.

How they both love their powerful daughters that are terrified of their abilities but they don't know how to help, because they were both generally stoic so the occasional head pat is appreciated and the reassurance that the power they have doesn't define them, no matter how much the media is in Ruby's face about it

How they went through the same experience and it broke both of them more than they'd like to admit and only being reunited with her broken friend group(in TDL) / making a family of her own (haven) filled the hole and helped them heal but they could have talked about it together, but TDL left no room for communication between the gang,

Do you think about how in TDL, Clancy said that 'Ruby was Lonely and he though he was her only friend', might not have been straight up lying because girl was rolling in her own misery for 90% of the series and being around another orange of her kind that can relate to her struggles not feel alone, even if its with a psycho manipulator helped in a way that her friends and family couldn't …. I think about that a lot

This is kinda sad at the end but whatever

Ruby not sleeping and the gang being very conserved for her health; we love to see it

sometimes Ruby and Liam will watch rom(coms) alone together just because everyone's else is sick of them and Liam low key watches Ruby half the movie to see how she reacts to things

'Ohh okay she likes hand holding but that was a given' ' she's crying?? Good tears or bad tears?? Doesn't matter kiss her head anyways, good she liked that, I know my girl'

The gang started watching movies early in the day Because they have a habit of binging 4 movies a night, and when they start at 8pm? Not a good mix

Like it'll be 4 am, Cole Ruby and Zu are ready to put on another movie, Liam and Jude are dead to the world, not even a rave could wake them up at that point lol

Also they've realized that sitting Ruby next to Liam will make her comfortable and there for sleepy, and a sleepy Ruby is a happy Ruby

Is Liam making a playlist for Ruby with all the soundtracks he likes? Hell ya.

Has he already made her 10, also yes

Do they take them to haven and spend nights dancing to it, double yes

Some one suggests they play the wizard of Oz. and Zu gets really silent, she cries throughout the whole movie and only Liam notices, he drops a hand on her head to make sure she's okay and she just turns away from the movie to hug him, because it reminders her that she still has her family, even if it's missing someone

TDM Movie Nights

-Oh boy, there is a full on war on deciding what to watch when the whole gang comes over.

-Vida obviously just smacks everyone's head with a pillow to convince them to watch a gory action film

-They end up making a movie marathon

-Liam is a sucker for chick flicks. Mainly because they remind him of him and Ruby, but he always falls asleep about 10 minutes in the movie and Vida and Cole are just fake gagging in the background.

-Ruby doesn't mind because Liam just falls asleep on her shoulder and she sometimes teases that he looks like a little angel.

-Next comes Chubs and Ruby's dystopia films. They are so engaged in their film that if anyone even sighs, there will be a whole lot of hissing and shoving for them to shut the hell up.

-Chubs banishes Liam at this point because he snores -and sometimes even giggles - in his sleep, and Cole ends up carrying him bridal style out of the room.

- Zu is actually pretty chill, she usually likes chick flicks but she's hardcore, she can handle the die hard movies at 2am. Tbh, she doesn't care what she watches as long as there are snacks. Like she just watches the movies for the popcorn.

-The snacks have to be certified by Dr Meriwether otherwise he'll rant about getting Diabetes and Insulin until Vida smacks him hard enough.

-Jude just loves to watch anime, periodt. (and secretly Cole likes the action ones too)

-Musicals are a favourite especially when Liam decides he wants to do a sing-along accompaniment to them while everyone groans at him, but he simply doesn't give a shit.

-Once they played an Avengers but Chubs and Liam argued the whole time about who should have won Civil War. Ever since then it is banned.

-Ruby ends up being swaddles in blankets. She's really cold so she shares a blanket with someone but gradually people kick and she subconsciously she steals some and ends up being a sleeping pile of fur by the end of the movie marathon.

-Then there are these hardcore film watchers (aka Cole and Vida) who have ongoing bets on whose the assassin, also they love to just criticise the camera work.

-Ruby watches all of them because let's face it Ruby is a zombie, she never sleeps at the right time, and the whole gang tries to put her to sleep.

-For example, Chubs nearly forcing sleeping pills down her throat.

-But at least, she appreciates the fact that they care.

Which godly parent i think tdm characters would have and why

Cole is a child of Vulcan, Hephaestus's roman counterpart, cause fire. Cole is a preator of camp jupiter. He ran away from home when his mom married Harry. He hasn't contacted them since

Liam is a child of hephaestus cause he is good with cars, and children of hephaestus are good mechanics, i decided to have Liam and Cole at different camps for plot. Liam dosent know Cole is also a halfblood

Vida is a child of Mars, Ares roman form (no explanation needed)

Chubs is a child of Apollo cause docter

Clancy was a tough one and was a toss up between Athena and Mars. Mars is Ares roman equivalent. But I decided Mars so Clancy could be a preator of camp jupiter with Cole cause I think that'd be hilarious

Jude is a child of Murcury, Hermes roman equivalent. I can't explain why he just is

Nico is a child of Athena and is a spy for Clancy

Zu is also a hard one cause I want to say she is a child of Zues, but in the darkest legacy she is such a smart cookie, but I still have to say she is a child of Zues

Jack is a child of hermes (need I say why)

Sam is a child of Mars, Ares roman equivalent. Because it makes sense

Lucas is a child of Apollo i think he'd have sun power, which could be used to burn people

Mia is also a child of Apollo, she sucks at singing, playing instruments, writing poetry, and medicine, if she wasn't such a good archer no one would believe she was a kid of Apollo

Gabe is a satyr (he dies bringing zu to camp)

Cate is a decendant of Venus, Aphrodite's roman equivalent, cause I say so

Ruby is also a child of Venus, cause charmspeak and cause Venus is not just the goddes of love and beauty, but victory too.

Ruby- the Psi symbol on her left shoulder, a reminder of what she’s been through and survived.

Liam- Ooh....I feel like a little sketch of Black Betty maybe? On his leg somewhere....idk.... A flame for Cole?

Chubs- I feel like he wouldn’t get a tattoo, but if he had to maybe... a rabbit, like from Watership Down on his elbow

Vida- Gets a SHITLOAD of tats, but her fave is probably a little train on her collarbone for Chubby Chubby Choo Choo, though she tells everyone that she prefers the motorbike on her shin 

Zu- I think Zu would get a bunch of little symbolic ones-like a little red shoe from The Wizard of Oz for Gabe under her ribs, a shooting star for Roman on her wrist and a tiny little print of four silhouettes for Ruby, Liam, Vida and Chubs on her ankle and last but not least a lightning bolt for herself on her shoulder

Priyanka- has the blue star, but would get a sun for Lana (Sunshine) and a little green line of code *Hacker*

Roman- A small daisy on his wrist, the same as where Zu has a shooting star. Remember Priya said he burned off his blue star because he hated feeling like someone else’s property, well I’d like to think that he choose this one to be linked to Zu 

Lana- A marigold for Priyanka’s necklace on her calf. I wholeheartedly believe she would get this-

Max- Idk for Max.... I think maybe a Shakespeare quote on his leg or maybe a little fishing rod for his ability? What do you think?

In Time Review

4/5 stars Recommended for people who like: novellas, misadventures, Zu Same world as TDM, obviously, but this time we get to see a different side to the country, literally. Instead of traipsing around the East Coast, Gabe and Zu are in Arizona and California for the novella. Shockingly, Zu, Hina , and their friends made it all the way to Arizona from Virginia before they ran into trouble. They were being chased by anotherskip tracer when their car flips. That's where Zu and Gabe meet. Gabe is desperate for money, desperate to get out of Flagstaff, and just all around doesn't really want to be a skiptracer...except it's just about the only thing that makes money nowadays since he can't be a PSF due to an old knee injury. It's obvious he has trouble seeing the Psi kids as anything other than kids, despite the skip tracer handbook he has suggesting that thinking of them as animals is easier (I will say, Bracken definitely leans into the whole fascist, concentration camp thing from the very beginning, and the suggestion of dehumanizing kids and thinking of them as animals is very On Point for that). Gabe though, well Gabe can't really think of Zu as an animal or an it. He can't help but feel bad for her, even when he thinks she's mocking him or looking down on him. Despite what he set out to be, Gabe ends up finding kids (okay, fine, two kids and one of them is Zu) and returning them to their parents/families instead of turning them over to the government. Zu, for her part, is just as funny and sassy as she was in TDM. She slips out of handcuffs, steals from vending machines, and all around is just a small chaotic force in Gabe's life pretty much from the get-go. Despite having control of her powers, she still has nightmares, only this time there's no Black Betty gang to wake her from them. Zu doesn't wear any gloves until Gabe forces her to wear them when he's still in his skip tracer phase, and even then she fights against it, showing definite character development from TDM, where it took her a while to stop wearing them. A fun surprise was that we got to meet Liam's mom briefly. She apparently has started a safe house for kids after Liam went into hiding and everything happened. We get background on it from the other kid Gabe picks up, who says that Liam's parents were obviously not supporters of Gray, so when kids started disappearing from the block, parents gave their kids to Liam's parents to hide. Honestly, that explains so much more about Liam's character and where he gets it from than just about anything else that happens. Overall, a pretty good novella to be read between TDM and NF, though it isn't my favorite novella of the bunch. Gabe is decent and he can be funny at times, but I just don't mesh with his narrative voice.

Hi Alex! Out of pure curiosity, for TDM, who was your favorite character to write? I know in the novellas you get more into the mindsets of different characters and with the TDM series, you follow Ruby the whole time but do you have a favorite? On a side note, I cannot believe filming already starts tomorrow; it has me feeling very !!!! and I'm sure you're the same way!!

I liked writing all of the Betty gang for different reasons. Their interactions with each other are my favorite parts of the series to this day :) I really appreciated being able to explore different voices in the novellas, and I think of them I most connected with Gabe. I was wrecked by his story in IN TIME and still think about him a lot, which I know sounds weird.

Not that it comes up in conversation a lot but every time someone mentions The Wizard of Oz I start crying and no one knows why and I can’t explain it without sounding crazy but for people who actually read In Time Gabe doesn’t get enough credit, I mean the only reason he died is because he made Zu stand behind him which makes me so sad. 😭

Petition for all of us to reread all the TDM stuff again this summer because my memory is trash and also I would like just a huge pile of TDM head cannons at the end( also I now know half the fandom haven't read the little novellas, end of book stuff, TDL, liams story deleted chapters abf fanfiction and that makes me upset) also I need you to read about Sam and GABE NO ONE TALKS ABOUT GABE and If I don't see any sparks rise fanfic at the end of this I may cry
