@shepards-dead-fish DELIGHTED to talk about this, tyvm
first and foremost, the big dawg himself, Nolanverse Joker
Tumblr media
His whole deal can honestly be summed up with:
Tumblr media
effectively flipping a code of morality on its head necessitates an intimate understanding of that code of morality first. Ledger's Joker sure does spend an awful lot of his limited screentime preaching nihilism to people, that nothing matters, that saving a busload of puppies and pushing a granny into traffic are both completely morally neutral acts, as is everything else under the sun, because there's nobody up there keeping score.
to me it reads like a crusade. to me, it reads like a smokescreen for rage and disgust. either the Joker isn't human, is instead a figment, a personification of chaos, or he is human, and something happened, something shoved him over the edge, and his actions are a means of punishing a cruel world that he bitterly resents and hates in its totality. you have to understand the concept of cruelty to react to it and lash out like that, though. you have to understand that it's a bad thing-- that bad exists at all. a true nihilist, when confronted with the weight of the world, shrugs-- because what are you going to do? what's the point in trying to change anything when any change is equal to the status quo?-- and moves on with their day. The sheer amount of time and effort the Joker expends on terrorizing Gotham speaks to a belief that Gotham deserves punishment, and punishment as a concept doesn't exist if there's no right or wrong.
confronted with this idea, he would claim that it's just his favorite hobby, his favorite thing to do, and since there's no moral weight attached to the shit he pulls then why not indulge in it? it's important to understand that this is total horse shit. it may well be his favorite hobby, but I think it's his favorite hobby because doing this shit makes him feel superior to everyone, and again, if he was a true believer in what he's peddling, he'd know that there's no true superiority when everything is on totally equal, neutral footing. he's a liar. he's an excellent bad guy because he knows bad exists and is intimately familiar with it. he lives as an inversion of good, tacitly acknowledging that good exists and that he's painfully aware of it.
next up: Jerome Valeska!
Tumblr media
Jerome is honestly kind of a doll compared to the others. He's on the simpler side of Jokers when it comes to his motivations and morality, because he sort of of wears his heart on his sleeve (and he never shuts up, so you don't really have to wonder what he's truly thinking). Jerome is doing what he does because he sees it as punishing a world that failed him, and he's open about it. He kicks off his criminal career by murdering his abusive mother, he's unrepentant about it, and from that point on, everything he does is with an attitude of "why should I care if anyone lives or dies if nobody ever did the same for me?"
There's no doubt that, like Ledger's Joker, Jerome really does get a kick out of violence (his family members who've known him since he was a kid repeatedly call him out for being a difficult, bad kid who frequently acted out and scared them-- and it's not as if regular abuse can have that effect on a child, right? he was definitely just "born bad," as his brother Jeremiah puts it. /s). I would argue that he gets a lot more actual joy and fulfillment out of murder and mayhem than any other Joker. He really just likes to kill, terrorize, and destroy! It makes him feel powerful and engaged with the world. It's his main social outlet (he's an extrovert).
He knows it's wrong-- he never tries to argue otherwise, or get out of it by acting like right and wrong don't even exist-- but in Jerome's morality, he's justified in doing it, because the way he was treated was wronger. All he's doing, in his mind, is seeking revenge, and revenge is one of Jerome's biggest motivators. I would argue that the pursuit of it is something he thinks is always morally correct in any case. There's a sense of fairness there, and by extension unfairness. He understands that it's an unfair world, and he thinks it's every person's right to fight for what they believe they're owed, even if that means stepping on other people to get it. "Every man for himself" is Jerome's morality, and given his background, how could it not be? If nobody ever reaches a hand out to you, you never learn to reach out a hand to others.
(By the time he meets people who do reach out their hands to him-- Lee Thompkins, Bruce Wayne-- his point of view is firmly cemented, and instead of opening up to the possibility that the pursuit of goodness might be worthwhile, he laughs at them for being freaks of nature, acting against their own self-interest.)
And finally, Arthur:
Tumblr media
Arthur, who of the three is easily the most sympathetic and more of an anti-hero than an outright villain.
Arthur, like Jerome, is also lashing out against a world that has repeatedly hurt him, but in contrast to the other Jokers, whose destruction spreads out over the whole city, he's very deliberate about who he attacks. He goes after people he specifically feels mistreated by. He goes after bullies and thugs and the elites who he blames for the state of Gotham, as well as for his own low personal state. His victims are specifically targeted-- he's not out to just hurt anyone he can get his hands on. He doesn't seem to find any pleasure in the idea of hurting people just to hurt them. He wants to punish bad people (and, at worst, he's neutral about innocents, though I'd say he leans more towards sympathizing with them than not caring about them at all).
That's what I mean when I say his moral code is unusually explicit for a Joker-- it is! Far from being the city's personal tormentor, he's basically hailed as a vigilante and a sort of champion at the end! That's very odd for a Joker. Far from denying they even exist, he very clearly knows the difference between right and wrong, and moreover, he cares about trying to do the right thing (which is why he never even seemed to entertain the idea of killing Gary, even though Gary had just witnessed Arthur committing a serious crime-- Gary hadn't done anything wrong, Gary didn't deserve to be killed). Unlike TDK Joker and Jerome, he doesn't seem to have a natural inclination towards and sense of pleasure in violence-- it seems painful for him, like a last resort, something that takes him over and that he surrenders to rather than something that's always been a temptation in the back of his mind.
But I don't think he thinks of himself as a bad guy. I think he thinks of himself as desperate, maybe broken. I think he cares about being good, I think he's tried to be good-- I think he feels like he's tried everything. But in Arthur's mind, violence is now the only way, the only thing that will make the bad guys sit up and take note. I think that he thinks that the exercise of violence against bad guys is no longer an evil, and I think the distinction matters to him because, again-- he wants to be good. In his view, it's the world that's stopping him from being good, nothing inherent to his own nature.
so yeah. all three of them have a personal sense of morality that informs their lives and decisions, and that they use to justify the things they do. it's super interesting to see where they differ and where they overlap.

talking to people whose main batman knowledge is tdk trilogy certainly is something. was talking to a coworker and he said how there’s a “theory” that the joker is a future batman who went back in time to stop his parents being killed but couldn’t do it to which i responded that would be even more fucked up knowing he kills his own kid then. he didn’t know batman even had kids? like even just robin existing should make it not super surprising.

"But in canon the Batfam knows about ghosts-"
Let me stop you right there.
A. It's a crossover. We are already mashing two or more different canons with different lore and mechanics together to try and form a cohesive whole. We are playing poker with UNO cards. We make our own rules.
B. Stories often need a POV outsider so the audience can witness the plot or mystery unfold along with the characters. The POV skeptic/ignorant often fills an important narrative role as the target of the exposition dump (and in Batman stories, that's often his sidekicks)! If I, the omnipotent author, wanted to I could spoil all the major plot points in the first paragraph, and it would be a boring fucking story. There's a reason it's Watson telling the story, not Sherlock.
C. Which canon are we talking about? Pre-Crisis? Pre-Flashpoint? New 52? Rebirth? TDK? Kingdom Come? Earth Two? Any of dozens of Elseworlds?
If it's cartoons is it Batman: The Animated Series? The Batman? Batman: The Brave and the Bold? Beware the Batman? Teen Titans Go? Young Justice? Any of the dozens of direct-to-dvd animated movies?
If it's live action is it Adam West Batman? Michael Keaton? Christian Bale? Battinson? Gotham?
If it's video games is it the Arkham verse? Injustice? Gotham Knights? Telltale Batman? LEGO Batman?
That's just off the top of my head! There are hundreds of different DC continuities and even the writers can't keep straight what's canon and what's not. I can't keep track of what's canon and what's not even when I try! I loved the Young Justice run which involved ghost team member Greta Hayes (Secret) but then that got erased from mainstream canon! Was it added back in? I have no idea! I can't find any mention of her appearing since 2011, so I guess Greta is currently retconned out of existence!
D. It's fanfic. We are just having fun here and we're giving you stories FOR FREE. If you want a story where the Batfam knows all about ghosts, have at it. I'd love to read it!
It's okay to bring up fun bits of canon not everybody knows about (if you do, please try to include what comic run and issue you are referencing so we can read it too!) but be kind. We are all just messing around in this sandbox and having someone come up and tell us we're doing it wrong and how dare we is just ruining the experience for everyone.

Hey ppls! If you want lil Harvey as far as I know there’s one in hottoy Cosby of the TDK movie version!
And the comic version I just picked up from lunchbox store on my way home years ago when I was an art student…
They are full of memories and I need them on my desk so I can survive from my working time…
Tumblr media
I really hope there’s more figures for Harvey
I don’t usually post these stuff besides my art works but I thought… well in case you want to know which toy company has already made them.
Anyway Here’s my collection of them (part of) I know I’m such a nerd. And I brought a karaoke 🎤 for my Lego Harv so he can sing that duet. LMAO

Those pictures were taken for 85th anniversary of Batman, so they included pop mart Batman 85th series, hottoy Cosby TDK & TDKR movie, and Dorbz Two face from the comic version.
park of them are goods I made for myself with my artwork in the final one.

INSOMNIAC'S SPIDER-MAN AO3 SERIESES
Tumblr media
EVERYTHING FOR INSOMNIAC'S SPIDER-MAN
Peter Parker
Felicia Hardy
(Any of the other characters don't have any requests written nor pending as for now, so I'm unable to have serieses for them as AO3 requires you to have at least one oneshot written to be able to add it to a series, and I can't promise serieses for characters who don't have requests pending/I have no ideas of my own for them)
For anyone who's concerned, THESE ARE NOT ONESHOT COLLECTIONS, they are made using AO3's "series" feature.
If you want to be informed about new fics for TDK or its individual characters, create an AO3 account and subscribe or bookmark any of those serieses listed above. There are buttons at the top right corner for those, or on top on mobile. I do not do Tumblr taglists anymore.
Also, if you're wondering, requests are ALWAYS open and you're welcome to leave one or multiple. Just remember to read my rules and pick a request type from this list.

Not you popping out of nowhere a year later with a new fic in a fandom I'm going to have to learn about so that I can read it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the way I'm literally so sorry it's not Dark Knight Joker (I've been putting in work on that fic too this year, I promise! it's sitting at 70 pages and if this frenzy of productivity lasts I hope to turn it towards that next, Ledger Joker is somehow always easier for me to write in the winter) but the heart wants what it wants when it wants it, and Jerome Valeska, who is a bigger flirt and a better boyfriend to an OC (somehow, despite the… atrocities) than TDK Joker is what this heart wants right now.
but since I've got you can I give you (and anyone else out of the know) my elevator pitch on Fox's Gotham right quick? There'll be some spoilers but only the kind of spoilers I think you need to hear to decide whether or not you want to watch this show, I prommy. THANKS
Tumblr media
ok SO do you ever find yourself wondering when comic book properties got so BORING? do you ask yourself where all the color went? do you find yourself nodding along when your buddy complains that if comic book show writing is gonna be so shitty, it might as well also be fun? look no further than seasons 2-5 of Gotham I promise you will not regret watching seasons 2-5 of Gotham
(season 1 was when they were committed to trying to run it like a straight prequel where Batman and his entire Rogues gallery wouldn't exist for another 20 years, and they also thought they were making a gritty detective show about the GCPD, although nobody was allowed to say fuck and everyone both outside of canon and in it knew that the best place to "detect" criminals in Gotham was inside the GCPD itself, but fortunately they gave that up after one season and switched over to just doing a kidfic version of Batman with a slightly-younger-but-still-weirdly-adult-given-that-they're-beefing-with-a-12-year-old Rogues Gallery)
Gotham, once it hits its stride in season 2, thinks it's a comic book movie from the 90s. Gotham thinks it's a comic book run from the 90s, period. I think almost every major character dies and comes back to life at least once. It's in the same nebulous simultaneously modern and steampunky-old-fashioned time period as A Series of Unfortunate Events and they lean harder into the design with every season that passes. Nobody has any common sense and NOBODY talks like a person. Gotham features the wettest, cuntiest version of Oswald Cobblepot I've ever seen and at one point he gets fake haunted (? it's been a while, I'm not clear on that point anymore).
(They do introduce Jerome in Season 1, though, so you might have to watch the first season after all. sorry.)
At some point they cast Cameron Monaghan as a character they named Jerome Valeska and they're like "Okay, Cam. You are playing a PROTO-JOKER. The real actual Joker isn't around yet and besides we don't have the rights to him, so be subtle, right? Play it cool. Just tasteful hints."
And Cam went "10-4, heard you loud and clear, dw about a thing" and then proceded to blast everyone's nips off when he did what every actor to play the Joker after Heath Ledger has been desperate to do and THEN some-- not only did he play the spiritual successor to Ledger's Joker, but he played the spiritual successor to Nicholson's Joker, he played the spiritual successor to Hamill's Joker, he did his own thing, the shifting nature of the role meant he was able to be like 6 different Jokers at once and every single one of them fucks. Like, I legitimately 100% believe his performance on this not-quite-CW-Batman TV show made a big enough splash that it played a part in the DC execs looking at Jared Leto's Machine Gun Kelly-meets-Spirit Halloween Mallrat Joker cosplay and going "…I think I've had enough of this guy," thank God.
Obviously Jerome is TO ME the heir to the Joker throne with no contest at all, not even a little bit, and besides him, the show is a blast and feels like what Batman felt like to me as a little kid-- like the 90s movies, like the animated series. Is it GOOD? I'm obviously too emotionally compromised to give you a solid answer. I suspect not, but if you're like me (and if you like my writing, then I think you probably are), you don't need good as much as fun and interesting, and Gotham is definitely that. It's streaming on Max, but if for SOME incomprehensible reason you don't want to watch one literal hundred 40-minute episodes of Riverdale-but-make-it-Batman, I am 100% amenable to uploading the 13 episodes that feature Jerome onto my google drive and posting the links here for anyone who wants them lmao. (If it's not obvious, it's the sort of show where you don't really have to watch everything to figure out what's going on-- it's a soap opera, you'll get the gist.)
ok that wasn't so much an elevator pitch as it was a stuck-on-the-bus-with-a-guy-who-won't-stop-trying-to-get-you-to-join-his-cult pitch but give it some thought anyway, ok? ok. love you bye

I’m sick of trying to get people to read my fic normal ways, so behold, shit I think is funny, and maybe if you squint qualifies as a meme. Workshopping the title. Behold; T-shirts I found non Etsy like a year and a half ago, and the character from my story (ONLY THE CHARACTERIZATION IN MY STORY NOT THE CHARACTERS AS THEIR ENTIRE SUM OF COMIC HISTORY) I think would wear it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So. Right now, some of these character are more minor, but I will say, I have expansions planned for each. Pretty much everyone gets a “origin” (most of which are taking place simultaneously) and I’m going to build my universe out from there. :) I hope you check it out!
