The Devil’s Carnival and Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival

Plot

The Devil’s Carnival- Three sinners die and find themselves in hell which turns out to be a demonic carnival... AND a musical! They face their personal demons and sins and i guess they die again somehow but this time for real? It’s less than an hour long and that includes credits.

Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival- After making the first movie the creators still had all those costumes and props so they made a second one, this time in proper movie length! Heaven and hell are at war, we follow the storys of a fallen angel, a betrayed lover and God’s wrath. AND it’s a musical!

Opinion

To make it easier i will shorten the names of the movies to TDC1 (The Devil’s Carnival) and TDC2 (Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival).

TDC1 is complete shit. I was prepared for something very stupid because i know Repo! (and enjoyed it for it’s campyness) but i was underwhelmed. Making hell a carnival AND a musical is such a fun idea but man did they run this against a wall. It’s kind of just embarassing to watch. Beethoven wrote a lot of his famous music while slowly going deaf, that doesn’t mean you should take it as a guideline and have your soundtrack made by deaf people only. It’s a lot... easier on the ears if you just listen to the studio recordings but they’re ROUGH in the movie, it’s mostly just noise or people sing talking with no melody except for a few songs here and there, terrible mixing, just bad. I’m very forgiving of musicals with bad stories or stupid characters if the songs are at least fun but this one is a big ol stinker. TDC2 improves on this a lot, there’s better songs and better soundmixing in general and the story, while stupid and bad, feels way more rounded and makes a little more sense. The films had the same budget but TDC2 feels so much better produced and has better sets, it’s just a lot less awful to look at despite both of them being quite ugly films. I think with whacky stories like this you just need a director with a really good strong style and this ain’t it. But if you’re into the idea then i’d certainly recommend skipping TDC1 and going straight to TDC2. Then again, TDC1 is extremely short so you might aswell watch it... if you have to.

Biggest gripe, Lucifer's design is still hella weak.

You'd figure having the moment with his six wings showing would be interesting but all it does is take up the screen. Why is this show, which could have so much pizzazz, giving us one of the weakest Lucifer Morningstar designs? The pilot teased a scarier design for him but I've officially lost all interest. I can handwave the rest of the show away because it's just not my thing, but I *love* stories about the devil and all of the creative directions people take him in.

If you want a good musical about the afterlife where Hell also has a circus theme then I recommend The Devil's Carnival duology!

Episode one is very setup heavy but episode two is where it really shines. The music is great, the visuals are fun and you can feel every bit of love that went into it! The world building for Heaven and Hell are great and it all has a very unique feel.

I'm not going to settle for something that was phoned in. There are tons of other pieces and projects that do the same thing but better.
