if anything, i think my principal criticism with The Coffin of Andrew and Renee (AND IT'S NOT THE ART JESUS CHRIST LAY OFF ON THAT) is that i can't help but feel, in an odd way, it is very constrained by it's format as a mod of the game itself, as weird as that may sound.

as a mod of the game, the plot naturally has to follow all the story beats of the original as part of the roleswap. if ashley did something, then renee does something. while they can probably make new sprites (they have made new graphics for the game and edited past renee's sprite to remove her wrinkles) at the end of the day this mod can't really like. make a whole new level. so, there's not a lot of room to diverge.

this is why i feel the first half of the meltdown in Room 302 was significantly weaker than TCOAAL's. while i adore the second half, i personally feel the beginning feels like an argument for the sake of an argument. renee's demeanor needed to start that fight because that's what happened in the game. renee had to be a huge cunt to andrew about the room 302 lady even if it didnt' naturally flow into it in order to advance that scene. renee will have all the clairvoyant dreams because ashley does. etc

i don't like being like "well if IIIII was writing it of course-" but as a writer it does make me think of divergences this story could take if it wasn't tied to it's medium in the way it was. i personally think i would've swapped andrew and renee with the room 302 situation and have renee kill the lady while andrew gets the guard killed, and at the end of the chapter he starts to open up about the clairvoyance to renee but closes his mouth at the last moment and keeps it to himself. i dunno- i'm absolutely not claiming it's better, but i keep thinking about how this plot could diverge and truly be it's own if renee doesn't have to copy ashely's actions.

i love this mod, i really do. but this is the one thing i always think of for this mod. while the dynamic is very different and with it all the interactions, the beats are... the same. that's my one big personal gripe with the mod
