It shouldn't have bothered Akeha as much as it did. Mokoya's choices were their own. Yet it felt like their twin was pulling away from them, standing at the prow of a ship headed into uncharted waters where Akeha could not follow.

Quick Review: ‘The Black Tides of Heaven’ by J Y Yang
J Y Yang’s beautiful fantasy series features the adventures of twins Akeha and Mokoya as they grow, discovering their unique abilities and choosing their futures and genders. This book features some beautiful descriptions and a clever use of magic, and I very much appreciated the discussion of gender as a chosen presentation, but there’s something about it that felt lacking. At times, I felt as though I was reading the mostly-completed outline for a book, missing perhaps some key world and relationship building chapters.
I do think the character’s relationships and dynamics were beautifully done, however.
Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Potential Triggers:  Fantasy violence
Do I recommend it?: Probably.
