talk shop tuesday: what's been your favorite thing about giffing tbosas? like what was your inspiration behind creating some of those masterpieces because they were out of this fuckin world

you mean besides getting to stare at pixels of tom being hot af the whole time?? outside of that it’s the absolute FEAST that movie served up. the parallels were exceptional and the angst top fucking tier pluuuus the fact it was a book (& I read it before seeing the movie) made like the perfect lil recipe for grace to love giffing it 💀 oh and the soundtrack! that slapped and added even more inspiration to creating for the movie. I genuinely think it was like. the perfect storm for me to create with. and because of that I had so much fun (& in general, motivation) to try new things!!! new layouts new effects new animations new fonts new overlays creating my own overlays and drawings. it was so rewarding to not have to struggle with the motivation part and just. create. so idk I think that reflected in the sets I’ve done for tbosas? at least I feel like it has, tbh I think it’s some of my best work ever. at this point I’m not even sure if I answered your question brizz I just rambled into one long ass paragraph with no breaks and I hate myself for that but I love YOU for this question & saying my sets are masterpieces 🥹😭🩷🩷🩷

Oh interesting! She definitely was the 11th victor but I had completely forgotten that while reading tbosas. I bet that was the year Gaul moved the arena though I doubt it was as high tech as the arenas we see in 74 and 75- I don't think they would have even been able to make a force field for the arena for example. But the "rebel" explosion at the arena was definitely an attempt by Gaul to make the arena more interesting so I think after learning from the 10th games, she would have wanted the game makers to build a new arena with a more visually and strategically interesting layout and Snow or other mentees would have suggested making the arena more camera accessible as well.

There likely would have been a team working on improving the drone technology that we saw in its infancy in the tenth games, maybe no silver parachutes yet but definitely something more streamlined than the remote control helicopters lol.

It's hard to say if more people were very actively involved in the making of Mags' game/arena bc from Snows perspective in the tbosas epilogue, he makes himself out to be the Special Smart Boy who figured out how to market the games but then that was just a snippet so we don't know who else was involved in supporting or throwing out the other ideas mentioned in the epilogue (like the tesserae incentive in the reapings, the reward for winning districts, etc) though we do know that Gaul had the ultimate final say as head gamemaker.

The 11th games, while definitely an improvement on the 10th, were probably still somewhat of a shitshow as they still had to work out how to ensure districts would be able and willing to watch (the food prize for the winning district might have not been a strong enough motivator at first), how to improve the cameras in the arena, how the new mentorship program would work, etc. Still a lot of kinks to work out between 10 and 11 and not enough money as the capitol had only just started collecting property tax during the 10th game.

Also just got sad because I realized Mags likely didn't get a mentor at all and had to participate in the first "official" games (since records of the 10th were erased) with muttations and a harsher landscape than "open sport stadium free for all." The 11th games were definitely the first that the tributes would have had to think more strategically than "procure weapon, don't die"

I just had a thought, so if you’ve read TBOSAS, I’m curious about what you think about this. (There may be spoilers for the prequel here, so be careful if you haven’t read it yet.)

So we know Mags won the 11th Games, (that is canon, right?) which means she won one year after Lucy Gray. Did she compete in Lucy Gray’s (and the others before her) arena? Did they follow the same procedure that the 10th Hunger Games did? Or was this the first year that they introduced new concepts? 

The 10th Hunger Games was historic in many ways; it introduced sponsors and mentors and probably some other important things I’m forgetting. But how historic was the 11th Hunger Games? What new experiences regarding the Games did Mags endure?

If you’ve seen Mags’ Victory Tour posters, also, this could mean she was the first victor to ever tour the districts after winning. I’m not sure where those posters came from or if they have any impact on Mags’ story, but I’m just throwing that out there. 

Also, how involved was Snow in the making of these Games? Was everyone, but him especially, looking for a redemption after the previous year? Mags could have been the first victor to do many things; the first to go on a Victory Tour, to compete in a new arena. She probably watched the Games evolve from the primitive, brutal battle we see in the prequel to the glamorized, almost pageant like game show we see in the original trilogy. That’s so interesting to me. I wonder if she shared this historic transformation with the other victors, and her overall thoughts on it.

The final piece of the puzzle that I started putting together since writing Tu Fui, Ego Eris finally dropped into my lap!

I've contemplated potential Cain-Abel parallels between these two, but the Romulus-Remus parallel that struck me like a bolt from the blue really blew my mind. It actually really matches with this webweaving(?) because Romulus and Remus did disagree about the naming of the city... Anyway, while making this, I lowkey forgot that Felix's Death-by-Coriolanus-Arranged-Car-"Accident" isn't canon.

I was tempted to quote Shakespeare's Coriolanus for when the titular character receives his cognomen instead of the Wikipedia pages, but I think this helps emphasize the name bestowed because of deeds idea without any distraction from the point. Also putting the two Wikipedia pages really emphasizes it... rip the second screenshot having smaller text, but that's the page layout's fault, and I'm too lazy to fix it.
