Aforementioned long ask post please excuse me while i try to figure out tumblr's new text editor. I’ll get into the art meme questions first and then the rest at the end.

Ok first of all thank you all for sending in questions! Giving me an excuse to talk hehe. I’ll address these in number order. Here’s a link to the ask meme for reference but also I’ll restate the question for ease of reading.

1. When did you get into art?

Super cliche answer but I don’t remember a time where I WASN’T the weird art kid! I started keeping a dedicated sketchbook when I was about 12? But here’s a page from my kindergarten journal about what I want to be when I grow up.

2. What art-related sites have you ever signed up for? 

LOL this is a weird question. Not sure why so many people want to know. Anyways I definitely had a dA. more than one dA account. I used to browse oekakis when I was a kid but I think I was only signed up to some small ones that internet friends owned. What else...? Mangabullet,Tegakie, Paintberri, iscribble back when that was a thing, instagram if that COUNTs, I used to post art on livejournal and dreamwidth too. Patreon, I guess. Gumroad, inprnt, bigcartel, storenvy all for selling stuff.

In terms of resources.. I have a schoolism account that I’m sharing with friends. Used to take classes on coursera for free. I signed up to textures.com for work recently haha. I can’t remember if I ever had an account on posemaniacs. Did they have accounts...? I definitely used to visit all the time.

3. Show us your oldest piece of art you have on hand.

Alright here’s me actually logging into my old deviantart account. These are from September 2008 So I was 13 years old. I don’t have a deviantart account from before then because 13 was the required age for having an account and I didn’t want to lie about my age because I wanted people to be impressed by how young yet clearly incredible at art I was LOL.

4. What defines your artistic style?

You guys are probably more equipped to answer this than me but uh... I wanna say... Focus on colors. And... a slightly heavy hand? Like confident... not always well-considered mark making HAH...

Also I think I have a pretty healthy mix of american comics/manga influences. I feel like people who are into american comics always think my art is too manga and people who are into anime/manga always think my art is too american. And I’m taking that as a good sign.

5. Do you practice other styles/have you tried other styles in the past?

I like to think I switch it up a bunch! I mean, these are pretty different, right?

I think I’ve mentioned this before but one thing I really took away from art school is that, for an illustrator at least, art style shouldn’t be consistent. Your greatest weapon is changing the aspects of your style based on the task, the emotions and message you want to illustrate etc. So depending on the project I’m working on, the fandom I’m drawing for, whether I want something to be funny or serious or dramatic, I’ll change things about my style all the time.

One thing I don’t rly post on here is really tight polished work and that’s because I do that for my day job haha. If you’re not paying me... I’m probably not gonna color in the lines.

6. What levels of artistic education have you had?

I have a whole ass diploma LOL. Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. from the Rhode Island School of Design. And I had a great college experience tbh. Besides the student loans. If any of you guys are thinking about art school feel free to e-mail or message me questions or concerns, I’ll be happy to help. Be as honest as I can be.

8. What is your favourite piece that you have done?

Well, obviously this is gonna change all the time and generally it’s gonna be my most recent piece LOL. So yeah, why the hell not. I’ll say it’s this one. I have a pretty short memory which I count as a blessing for an artist. I don’t dwell that long on older work and it keeps me moving forward.

10. What do you like most about your art?

I like that it’s something that only I would make! I had this thought fairly recently and I wrote it down in my sketchbook, it’s pretty cheesy and rambling but it felt revolutionary at the time:

So yeah. I like my art best when it’s the most me and for me. And I like it least when it feels like I’m just making something for social media or for other people’s expectations or whatever.

14. What do you like drawing the most?

Kids in baggy clothing are like my go-to LOL idk if that’s obvious. but also I like being challenged so lately I’ve really loved drawing multi-character compositions, environments, weird angles, etc.

oh i LOVE drawing the underside of shoes lol. And bandages. People that are kinda beat up.. I think it comes from getting a bunch of cuts all the time. I’m always patching myself up and I want to patch characters up too.

15. What do you like drawing the least?

mmm I try to find something to like in every drawing but lets see... I don’t like doing commissions of people’s dogs. Just because it’s normally like... a family friend and my mom volunteered me without my consent and I don’t even really know what they’re expecting me to draw and I don’t even get to meet the dog. Also I’m not that great at dog anatomy. Trying to learn though.

18. What is your purpose for drawing?

This could have a million answers! Uhhh to GIT GOOD??? But also to express myself... and also to make money... I mean it depends on what the drawing IS. I draw fanart mostly to connect to people in the fandom so if you ever see me drawing fanart please take it as like an open invitation to talk to me about the character haha. 

20. How would you rank your art? (poor, mediocre, good, etc.)

Good!!! I have a lot of self-confidence primarily born out of ignorance and a short attention span. If I don’t think too hard about how many other artists are mindblowingly unfathombly good... its easy to think I’m good too! LOL

In all seriousness though, I think the opinion a person has of their art is like a crazy balancing act, right? Like you have to think you suck enough to want to get better but also you have to think you’re good enough to not want to give up. I think we’re all walking that line, I know I am! But also I’m a glass half-full type of person so. Most of the time I feel good about it.

22. List at least one of your “artspirations.”

This is a good question because I’ve been trying and failing to put together one of those “influence map” memes for like a full month now. What’s giving me a hard time is I feel like none of these are actually really obvious “““influences”““ in my art? Like it’s hard to see a lot of them in the work I make...? But idk maybe you guys’ll see what I can’t.

And these are just a couple! God there’s so many more. I could talk about other artists for ages, from all different genres of art. Daumier, Rockwell like every illustrator out there, Dana Gibson, Alex Toth, Hiroshi Yoshida, a lot of the Brandywine School. Lots of current working artists too, Karl Kerschl, frikkin Masashi Kishimoto lol, Jake Wyatt, Richie Pope, Edouard Caplain, Matt Cook, Sachin Teng, - lots of big internet artists, Sophie Li, Freddy Carrasco, Milliofish, Angela Sung... like all my friends from art school too. I could just keep going but I’ll stop for now lol.

24. Do you have a shameful art past? (recolour sprite comics, tracing art, etc.)

I mean if that’s how we’re defining shameful?? sure LOL. It’s not sprite comics but I used to do pokemon sprite recolors all the time. And I used to trace manga panels and color them... Granted this was all when I was like under 12 yrs old so it’s not even embarrassing. Can you really call it shameful when a 7 year old wets the bed or whatever? Not really. In fact some of these are cool as fuck. Look

25. Draw a picture!

I used to get a lot of compliments for drawing people smiling lol but I don’t think I’ve drawn a lot of smiling lately.. here’s proof I’ve still got it.

I think a lot of artists on social media talk about the struggle of making art but imo not enough people talk about the joy! Like I know it’s corny but. I really meant what I said at the beginning of that sketchbook about re-contextualizing art around process and progress > product and perfection. I think its super important..! The strength of messy, unfinished, and energetic art! For the feeling of it, for the love it!

Hi! I totally have the answer for digital stuff on my faq lol. But in terms of drawing on paper.. it varies! I tend to use sketchbooking and any on-paper doodling I do as a way to loosen up/warm-up or experiment. But right now my go-to aresenal is:

23. Clothes: Comfy and cozy. If I can get away with pajamas while lounging at home I do. I have a weird obsession with gray my friends have to physically stop me when we’re out shopping because I’m just drawn to it. There’s so many shades! It goes with everything. I don’t love black or white so gray is my neutral. I like solids and stripes. I own too may fandom shirts but I bagged my old wrestling tees and put them away, I only have like 7 currently in my rotation not counting my over sized Sami shirts I sleep in.

24. Dream job: Wrestling valet. I wanted to be (and kind of still do) Miss Elizabeth but with a big dash of Sensational Sherri. Like Miss Elizabeth just stood around but Sherri got physical with the guys and took bumps when the story called for it and I liked that. I wouldn’t want to be a full time wrestler because I’m not about pain, but bitch let me manage somebody male or female. Now it’s such an unpopular opinion everyone wants every girl to wrestle and I’m like bring back managers, valets, wives and girlfriends. Not very woman is so dedicated that she’s willing to break her neck or get that banged up. I can’t be the only one with this opinion lol.

25. Dream Trip: That’ll actually happen San Miguel’s Portugal. Dream that’ll never happen South Korea, Taiwan and Japan no one would go with me, but I‘ve dreamed of it since 2007.

26. Favorite Food: Junk food. Anything cooked in garlic. If I go out to eat Shrimp Mozambique I’ll settle for chicken Mozambique but it’s not the same. So spicy and flavorful great now I want to go eat some I don’t think anyone delivers it :(

Who are the Five Venoms?

this is the most extreme special interest I’ve had in a while so I will. try to be as succint as possible lol

Anyway! The Venom Mob! Who are they? They were a group of five individuals who starred in kung fu movies from 1978-1982 together. In that span of five years, they made 19 movies that count as official Venom Mob movies (i.e. 3 or more of the venom mob are in starring roles)

So! Once again! WHO ARE THEY?? 

Well, since their first official movie all together was The Five Venoms (or Five Deadly Venoms for its western release), where they played six students of the Venom Clan and were given designated numbers, I will go down that number list to introduce them!

#1: Lu Feng 

Lu Feng is part of what I call the 146 combo (Lu Feng, Phillip Kwok, Chiang Sheng), the three of whom are arguably the core of the venom mob. He starred in all but *one* of the 19 venoms movies, thirteen of which he was a bad guy.

Almost always played the villain (like, 70% of the time)

Fantastic with weapons (especially staffs!!! spears!! tridents!! variations thereof!)

imo the best actor among the Venom Mob (like, I’m talking abt his micro expressions and emotional range?)

in context ^this expression KILLS me... that’s the face of “I can’t kill my friend but I’m going to die by his hands” ;; !!! like!!! I need to lie down

also the more I think abt it the more I think it has to be seen in motion because he like. does this shaking thing with his hands and face that tears my heart out

#2: Wei Pai 

This guy... doesn't really count as a venom tbh, because he later pursued dramas instead of kung fu. But I still consider him to hold the place of #2 in the venom lineup, even though I only think of the venoms as the five other guys. Just wanted to make sure you knew who #2 is even though I won't talk abt him lmfao

#3: Sun Chien

Sun Chien had been making a name for himself in taekwondo way before he got into the movie business, and his skill in taekwondo really shines through in these movies (speaking as someone who does taekwondo). His characters are usually noble in nature (like... all gentle and brotherly n stuff) BUT that’s not to say he never plays villains.

#4: Kuo Chui (Philip Kwok)

ok this guy is a straight up cutie imo... also!! He’s part of that 146 combo I mentioned earlier! I should probably mention now that #1, #4, and #6 all met at the Fu Sheng Opera House when they were kids/teens, so! That means all three of them have their roots in acrobatics (WHICH IS CLEAR IN THE AMAZING WORK THEY DO IN THESE MOVIES) and they have a shared history of working together! anyway anyway, Kuo Chui played the hero like... the entire time. In all of the venoms movies, including official and unofficial, he only played a villain once. (His villain role was in Chinatown Kid btw)

#5: Lo Mang

ok um first of all. muscles. like I don’t think I can stress that enough. He has the most defined muscles I’ve ever seen, and I’m pretty darn sure they’re just... like that. As a genuine martial artist (his main style was Mantis if ur wondering), I don’t think he’d be so careless as to dehydrate himself just to make his muscles visible. Like, I’m 99% sure he was just such a hard worker in his field that his muscles just.. looked like that...

dies in practically every movie (I’m sorry, that’s not really spoilers that’s just fact.. he’s renowned as the venom that always dies lmao)

#6 Chiang Sheng

where do I even start. Chiang Sheng is by far my favorite venom (Kuo Chui is a close second). Among the venoms, he was definitely the best acrobat. I’d even argue that he may be the best acrobat in kung fu film (KEEP IN MIND THOUGH THAT I HAVE ONLY REALLY WATCHED VENOMS FILMS none of the others have enraptured me quite as much..) Chiang Sheng is generally the fan favorite (he has the nickname “Cutie Pie” which. is so fitting because he is SO cute), both for his looks and for his skill. He might not be the best fighter among the venoms (he’s certainly not lacking tho), but he is, in my opinion, the best performer. Every time he’s on screen my eyes are glued to him. Oh! And he’s the final piece of the 146 combo. The three of them when choreographed together are monsters.

it’s that time of the year again, so. annual writing round-up, let’s go:

according to AO3, i have posted 14 fics this year, totalling 51k words. average word count has risen from 2.5k last year to 3.6k, which...is probably thanks to the mdzs college au (which btw @pumpkinpaix​ has done a fantastic podfic of and it’s so?? good?? so even if you don’t read the fic, have a listen to her podfic!!) and the guardian lawyer au lbr. 

longest fic i wrote this year was the mdzs college au, the moon lives in the lining of your skin (9143 words); the shortest was a jack/zz drabble, fortune (936).

as with last year, this year was also a very cdrama-focused writing year! i continued writing for Guardian (i.......still have so many wips i want to finish for this fandom, rip me), and added H3, The Untamed and Original Sin into the mix. 

1 of 14 fics was for Original Sin, being a short fix-it that was mostly fluffy.

2 of 14 fics was for Guardian, which is a little disappointing because i have so many wips that i wanted to finish this year. oh well. i’ll have a couple of days once i get back to auckland to possibly rewatch a couple of choice episodes and cry over weilan for a bit, and then be spurred into writing more guardian fics??? both fics were weilan. the more popular fic (by 2 kudos!) was third time's the charm, the abo au ft. mildly jealous!shen wei ahahaha. (side note: i think this was the fic that set my “sweetheart” thing off.)

5 of 14 fics was for H3: Trapped, 2 tangfei and 3 jack/zz. the most popular of which was amuse bouche, aka the jack cooks his way into zhao zi’s heart fic. that’s also my personal favourite! :D

6 of 14 fics was for The Untamed/MDZS, all of which were wangxian. the most popular being since then i am because you are, aka the 什么是plot什么是backstory au where the yiling patriarch needs to marry for an alliance. i am honestly most surprised at the reception this fic has received tbh, considering its length and lack of....basically everything except dumb pining wangxian ahahahaha.

this is also the year i’ve started writing tumblr askbox ficlets again, which i haven’t really done much of since the height of my les mis days. i’ve had a look through the tag, and there’s about 8 pages worth of ficlets, so approx. 120 ficlets! 

i won’t do a word count for all of the ficlets because hahahahaha that’s too much effort for a roundup post, but! most of them are for the wilful blindness verse (74 ficlets so far what in the fuck) which, according to rough calculations, has already spanned 35k words over the last 4 months, making it p much the longest thing i have ever written, and i haven’t even “officially” started writing it yet tbh???

les mis buddies!!! i know i, again, have not filled my one exr fic on ao3 quota, but i did write around 2? 3? ficlets??? you might have to search back in the ficlets tag, but i think i did them all around the same time, so around when i did the writing about kisses meme in may?? the most popular one was this oblivious!grantaire ficlet, which is not surprising because it’s a tried and true favourite of mine to write!

i feel like everything i’ve written this year have mostly a decent balance between fluff and sads? i’m even leaning more towards writing fluff now, so we’ll consider this rebranding a success.

my favourite to write this year has been wilful blindness, mostly because it’s easy and relatively low-commitment and fun? strong contender for second is tonight i can write the saddest lines, the amnesiac!lwj au, just because it flowed out of me really easily and took the least time to complete.

i have, tragically, not really finished any of the wips i set out to finish this year. my wip folder has only grown, although a couple of them i’ve finally moved to the “abandoned” folder (this includes the historical jack/zz au that i really wanted to write, but i feel like i’ve moved on from this ship? idk idk. the bare bones of the fic are still there, just in case i ever feel like picking it up again). 

there are a couple of guardian fics that i really want to pick up and finish, and at least 4 mdzs fics that are 75% done and should be completed in the first quarter of 2020! it’s been a good writing year, considering all things. i think the last time i wrote this much was back in......2015 (ao3 says i wrote about 78k words then) when i was still in uni, and it feels good to have such an outlet again!

2. Did honk imprint first? I know his story is fourth but did the other three imprint and then him or did he imprint first and the others imprint over that six month time period? 3. Does this take place after or during svt imprinted stuff? I know Aya (seungcheols mate right?) is mentioned and I’m wondering if this all takes place at the same time. 4. What do the boys major in? If you planned that 5. Not to be pushy or pressure you but is the series totally over? (2/3)

Okay before I answer, I’m happy you read PTG’s even though you don’t stan them because like idk I still count it as them getting their well deserved attention so yeah thank you !!!!!

1: Honestly I have no idea. I didn’t plan that out nor do I really specify. I kind of like that it’s vague anyway because idk I hate trying to keep up with concepts of time in my own writing because I always end up making things go by too quickly and it seems like it’s rushed. So it’s not specified and I’m just gonna keep it that way.

2: Honk did imprint first. They kept it a secret for those 6 months, and it was around the time they all found out that Yanan, Kino, and Dawn imprinted. Yanan an Kino imprinted literally the same day as each other, Dawn was a little bit after that, and then Honk and Sonny were outed after that. But yeah, Hongseok was first but nobody knew.

3: Yeah, every Imprinted series takes place at the same time in the same universe. So SF9 and EXO’s also exist at the same time. (Also not that it matters but Aya is Jeonghan’s mate BUT ANYWAY.)

4: I absolutely did not plan that lmao. I think I said Seungkwan majored in something that had to do with music because that’s how he met his mate, but other than that ??????? I didn’t bother planning any of that because it didn’t really matter to the story. Like I didn’t plan for either stories tbh.

5: Seventeen’s is. I MIGHT open requests at some point for spin-off stuff (there is one spin-off thing coming because it was requested back for my,,,,,,5k celebration I think???) and I do plan on doing headcanons for their families and stuff after they all move away and settle down, but the main series is over and I won’t be adding onto that storyline. But the other Imprinted series are all still ongoing.

6: The questions for SVT Imprinted basically are the same as PTG’s. I don’t really plan out the span of when things go on, and I only really planned what Seungkwan majored in.

I have to start by saying that no matter how much you like them, how good you think they are, or how many notes they have, Tumblr posts are not reliable sources, because they can be written by literally anybody. I could probably find multiple posts saying ‘RACISM AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE IS A THING’. Would you believe me because of that? Obviously not. Newspaper articles are also kind of iffy because they don’t cite and they’re not obliged to be objective, whereas academic sources (usually) have to be reviewed and vetted by multiple academics in the field before they can be published. Opinion pieces in magazines are not good sources, because they’re opinions. Opinions are biased. You need to be objective.

I called you out for being racist to white people. You countered by saying reverse racism is not a thing, and you failed to acknowledge that what you said was still prejudiced and offensive. I then asked you this:

Kpop in Japan

Kpop consumption in Japan is gendered. You may not have read this source that I originally suggested.

“Where are the men? There are, of course, male fans of South Korean popular culture, but kandora and K-pop have remained largely the province of women. A predictable corollary is the predominantly male constitution of the anti-Korean Wave movement. The discourse of Ken-Kanryū spans a range of criticisms, from the lack of originality of South Korean drama or music and the artificial character of South Korean stars (as evidenced by the prevalent use of plastic surgery) to the political criticism of the South Korean state and big business and the generalized dislike of Korean people and things Korean. Almost no one believes in the post–World War II social order—sometimes called the 1955 system after the year in which the Liberal Democratic Party became consolidated, and coinciding with the beginning of rapid economic growth after the Korean War—in which many men could look forward to lifetime employment with steadily rising standards of living. It was also the time when the nuclear family became the indisputable norm, consolidating the gender divide between working husband-fathers and housewife mothers. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, few could trust their faith in the postwar 1955 system. That is not to say that there are no male Kpop fans. Of course there are. It is just statistically not very likely. 

Let’s look at the Big Bang tour numbers you posted. Unfortunately, I think YG might have inflated those numbers. Based on the tour information they provided (18 concerts across 4 venues), it is impossible to have had 911k attendees. I am assuming here that they did not have any stage extensions that required the removal of seats and that they sold out every concert.

Tokyo Dome max. seating capacity: 55k x 6 nights = 330k Kyocera Dome max. seating capacity: 36,477 x  6 nights = 218,862 Fukuoka Dome max. seating capacity: 42k x 4 nights = 168k Nagoya Dome max. seating capacity: 40.5k x 2 nights = 81k Total: max seating capacity for 18 nights = 797862

That is a significant difference. It might be possible if they were violating fire safety regulations and adding extra seats…? Maybe they were counting people who stood outside (but even so, a 111k difference?) But that’s on YG, not you. Just thought you should know.

By the way - ‘the first foreign artist who has held dome tour for three years in a row in Japan’ is really not that big a deal.

1) Popular Western artists don’t usually do tours in Japan. More often than not, Japan is just one stop on a world tour, or an appearance at a festival. Most artistes just play in Tokyo, maybe Osaka, and that’s it.

2) Most popular Western artists work in the cycle of album production, album release, album promotion (world) tour, rinse and repeat. That cycle is usually more than a year long - Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour took a little over 7 months to complete, and another 7 months to prepare for, not including rehearsals. It is highly unlikely for them to be able to tour in Japan every year. Heck, most of them don’t even tour in their own countries yearly.

The way you compare Taylor Swift’s and Big Bang’s tour numbers directly (2.3 million in 83 shows vs ‘911k’ in 18 shows) is not fair. Her tour includes many smaller venues (10~15k) in America, while Big Bang’s is a dome tour, and their smallest venue is 36k. Of course Big Bang has a higher average number of attendees per concert. Both of Taylor Swift’s shows in Tokyo Dome sold out. Her entire world tour sold out. Did Big Bang’s Japan tour sell out? I have no idea. I should hope so, given those inflated numbers. But they didn’t specify that it was, which is odd.

The question still remains why you chose Kpop over Jpop. You say it’s okay for you to suggest Kpop because you think it’s popular in Japan. However, it’s not okay for white people to suggest Western music (that is also popular in Japan.) It’s not okay for white people to suggest Western music just because they don’t know Jpop, but in the same situation, it’s okay for you to suggest Kpop because you’re Asian/not white? How is it that they’re obliged to go and do research on Youtube while you don’t have to?

Are you saying that it’s inappropriate for white people to suggest music that they know because they are white?

You are approaching it from an outside perspective, your own perspective, whether you’re white, Asian, or a freaking rainbow.

Tbh it sounds to me like you are saying, white people shouldn’t participate in fan activity because they’re white and must therefore demonstrate their cultural sensitivity to you before they can contribute, whereas you get a free pass to do whatever you want because you’re Asian?

Your argument: Big Bang is more popular in Japan than Taylor Swift.

Your proof: Big Bang had ‘911k attendees’ in 18 shows, while Taylor Swift had nearly 2.3 million in 83 shows.

What you did not mention/know: Big Bang’s numbers might have been artificially inflated, plus theirs was a Japan dome tour while Taylor Swift’s was a world tour that included a lot of small venues.

And thus the validity of your argument is called into question, because your proof did not hold up. Are you automatically wrong? No. But I’m going to regard your original statement with a great deal more skepticism.

Race

I am a POC. @slbp-owns-ayame is a POC. I personally don’t feel like my opinions are being dismissed or spoken over by white people, Asian people, or really any people at all, based on my ethnicity. If you have something to say, it is my responsibility, as a person, to listen to you. I don’t see why you feel that white people are especially obliged to listen to the voices of the POC (to be specific, you), while you are not required to listen to the opinions of other POC? Because you are also a POC? So you’re allowed to step all over the opinions of other POC because you are also one? 

I really don’t understand why you think it’s okay to sling mud at all white people. Do you not realize that European Caucasians are culturally different from American Caucasians? You say that you are not implying that French culture is not the same as German culture and therefore it’s okay. But to me, you are erasing the differences between European Caucasians, American Caucasians, and Caucasians that live in non-white majority countries. You saying that ‘all white people this’, ‘all white people that’, that’s like saying all Chinese people eat dog meat. All Chinese people let their children pee on the street. This is clearly not true. Would you be insulted if someone said that to you? When you say ‘all __ people do this’, ‘all ____ people do that’, no matter what word falls in that blank, it is going to be an overgeneralization, a stereotype, which is problematic. You seem to think that ‘all white people are racist’ is acceptable. Replace ‘white’ with any other word and you will see that it is not.

By the way, how do you even know for sure that all these people you’re angry about are white? Did you ask them? Are you assuming?

I pointed out to you that your words were inappropriate. Your response was that reverse racism does not exist. You neatly sidestepped the issue of whether your words were offensive or not. You did not acknowledge it. You did not apologize.

You say that reverse racism doesn’t exist. Fine. I can’t find an academic definition of it tbh so I’m inclined to agree with you. I can’t know whether something exists or not if I don’t know for sure what it is.

You insist that you are not racist towards white people because it’s impossible to do so, because they are a majority. Fine. By your definition of racism, that is accurate. By my definition of racism, which you have probably seen seeing as you have gone through my anon responses, you are absolutely being racist.

If you insist it is not racism, then so be it. I can’t change your mind. But it is definitely racial prejudice. You have acknowledged that your words were offensive. You know that you were not right here. And yet, instead of acknowledging your mistake like a decent human being, your defense is that you are allowed to sling shit at white people because they’re a majority and therefore are not allowed to get offended??

It does not damage your credibility or stance if you admit that you are wrong. If anything, that shows that you are a reasonable person who is willing to acknowledge your mistakes. Unfortunately, that is not the behavior you are exhibiting.

You certainly don’t seem like you know Japanese history well. But I can give you the benefit of the doubt. You just need to know this - if you’re going to yell at people about how inaccurate they’re being, your knowledge better be on point.

You are guilty. Not of ‘seeing characters through the lens of a white person’, whatever that means - I note that it’s conveniently impossible for, you, an Asian, to be guilty of this simply by the virtue of not being white. I accused you of pushing your personal experiences onto Japanese characters. You used your own experiences to suggest music, did you not? You said that you aren’t familiar with Jpop, but you did not go on youtube and look it up like you are suggesting other people do. If you so strongly believe that this is how things should be done, why didn’t you do it yourself? Were you lazy? Did you just pick songs that you already know and like?

I’m not attacking you for doing that. Everyone does that. It’s just that it’s hypocritical when you say that other people aren’t allowed to do that, but you are, because you’re not white.

And while we’re talking about race, what is this whole ‘Asians vs white people’ thing you have going on? It’s not a war. When you align yourself against an entire group of people like that, it’s othering. It’s a harmful attitude that helps no one. You keep talking about your opinion ‘as an Asian’. I’m also Asian. So what? Have you considered that maybe the ‘white people’ you seem to love hating on don’t want to interact with you about their supposed wrongdoings because it feels like anything they say will be dismissed with, ‘well you’re white and I’m Asian and therefore I’m right and your opinion is invalid’?

Women

I did not say that women don’t face discrimination. It’s hard to measure empowerment because there are so many factors involved. I did not say that POC women do not face more discrimination than white women. I fully acknowledge that all these issues exist, and need to be addressed.

I think you are coming from a very macro-level viewpoint. There are empowered women who are not white, as well as non-empowered women who are white. Therefore, your sweeping statement, to me, sounds like erasure of these people, which is funny because that’s what you complain about. Erasure.

Fan Content

Admittedly, I don’t follow that many people, and I don’t consume that much fan content. I certainly had never heard of that Glee AU until you talked about it. I honestly thought you were talking about something else until someone sent me a link. It feels like you are deliberately seeking out content that offends you.

Japanese people can exist in Ohio. Japanese people can be born anywhere in the world. Japanese people born overseas are allowed to speak another language as their first language. By insisting that Japanese people in America must behave in accordance with your idea of how Japanese people should, you are erasing the existence and experiences of these people.

I have never thought that fan content creators in the SLBP fandom were being disrespectful of the source material. If anything, I feel uncomfortable about how people sometimes exoticize Japan. If we’re talking about being inaccurate with Japan and its culture and history, I urge you to first consider that these characters we love are tall and pale with multi-colored hair, in the 1500s.

That’s not what you did, though. I agree, this is a good idea. But have you considered that maybe, if you said this from the beginning instead of being all WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH AND I’M OFFENDED, people might have listened to you, instead of getting annoyed with you?

Your Attitude

It does not take away the validity of your argument, even if I don’t understand exactly what the point you are trying to make is. But it makes you unlikeable, and people don’t want to listen to someone that they don’t like. If people are offended by you, they’re not going to want to listen to you, even if your point is 100% valid. I am saying that the way you approach things is just not great. I’m sorry if you feel that this is unfair to you.

The SLBP fandom has a history of anon hate, so people have the tendency to disregard what anons say. If you go on anon, it seems like you are trying to hide your identity, and if you’re proud of what you’re doing, why hide? You certainly seem to take pride in what you’re doing. Why go on anon then? Are you scared of being identified? From this point on, people might look at any anon message that references whitewashing and think, ‘maybe that’s sunyounqs again.’ Furthermore, the anon ask character limit is really short and nowhere near enough to explain your point. A message that says ‘you’re whitewashing and you’re wrong and I’m offended and you need to change’ is not convincing without an explanation. There is absolutely no conceivable reason why people should believe you right off the bat. 

You send your anon message, and when you get a response you don’t like, you continue stalking that person’s blog, and then run back to your own to make that snarky post that I originally replied to. That’s not the behavior of a mature person who’s ready for a calm discussion. I mean, you were literally acting out that one Spongebob meme.

Actually, I really don’t understand why you didn’t just message these people directly, and make your point in a polite manner without being condescending. Wouldn’t that have been more productive? I mean, I don’t know how many followers you have, but I’m assuming that these people you throw shade at don’t follow you. How do you even know that your posts will be seen by them? It’s like you’re yelling into a void.

These tags are clearly aimed at @koudaiin. You didn’t take the initiative to message her directly. You wrote a vague post that was about her (which you seem to have deleted?) and then you posted this after she announced a social media hiatus which was unrelated to you. You didn’t even have proof that it was linked to your post. Why did you assume that her hiatus was because of you? ‘The audacity’? The audacious one here is you for assuming that you, a stranger to her, wrote a post that you don’t even know if she read, and that it was enough to make her take a break.

I am not trying to attack your character. I’m trying to suggest that you need to change your behavior if you want people to pay attention to what you say. Re: your age - I mention your age because I remember a time when I was 18 and convinced that I was right about everything. I was not. There are plenty of older people here in the fandom who feel the same way I do. It’s clear to us that you see things in black and white (hahaha unintended pun), when nothing is that simple.

Judging from these tags, you seem to think that people are not responding to you because they aren’t seeing your posts. But I’ve had multiple people tell me that they are not responding to you because judging by the way you write and the content of your tags, you don’t seem like someone who is willing to have an open, reasonable discussion. I had people tell me not to bother interacting with you because of that impression. From the way you have spoken about this issue so far, you seem to be portraying yourself as some sort of savior that has come to enlighten the ignorant masses on their wrongdoing. That attitude helps no one.

You have a valid concern about whitewashing. You seem to be convinced that whitewashing in this fandom is rampant. In that case, I suggest you find another example, because this one has been driven into the ground already. If you want to convince people that you are right, I suggest that you take some time to think about what you want to say, and be careful to phrase yourself in a way that does not offend people. Take a break, concentrate on your exams, wait for people to (hopefully) forget how offensive you have been. In the meantime, at least try to hide the ‘white people need to stop’, ‘everything white people do that I don’t like is bad’ attitude that you have going on. It’s not endearing you to the group that you need to be convincing, and if you want to make a positive impact for your cause, then you need them to be willing to listen to you.

I’d like to be better about my chaptered fics, not abandoning them and things like that. Also, action scenes, I want to get better at those.

I’d say Lakshmi Persad, a local author. Mostly because I hated having to do that book in lit class and wanted to do better than her.

If you want it, make it. I’m serious, don’t count on anyone to make the content you want to see, do it yourself and people might follow suit, if not, at least you made it. Hella.

I finish stories and still have no idea if I figured them out or not.

I’ve gotten a few, mostly I ignore them. But there was this one fic, it wasn’t for anyone but me and I shouldn’t have posted it at all but I did and someone told me that the characterization was completely wrong for the character I was writing and I ended up leaving the fic alone for months and months. I got back to it eventually but I’m not sure if I’ll ever finish that fic tbh.
